SHINING BRIGHTER AND IMPACTING MORE LIVES…GREATER WATERBURY YMCA

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTThe Greater Waterbury YMCA brought the Berkeley Warner Recreation Center to full operation through a partnership with the Waterbury Housing Authority. Through the dedication and commitment of staff and the community, Berkeley offers basketball, literacy support, summer meal programs, homework stations and supervised recreation time in a safe and caring environment for youth in the north end neighborhood.

In June, the Y collaborated with the City of Waterbury and Board of Education to provide the first Rod Dixon’s Kids Marathon Program to middle schoolers in Waterbury. The end result was 500 children running the last mile of their cumulative 26.2 mile program and finishing as winners of Healthy Living. In more related Healthy Living news, the Y’s acclaimed Triathlon Club took home the USAT Club Championship Cup at the 2013 Pat Griskus Olympic Triathlon, with dozens of YMCA athletes representing Healthy Living on the course.

The Y expanded its reach into the Pomperaug area with the formation of a Board of Managers in Southbury. The Board secured a charter from YMCA of the USA for the future Pomperaug Family YMCA and has been in continuous planning sessions to move forward with a branch located in the Pomperaug area. New sources of fundraising and support in our Pomperaug service area proved successful through an Evening at Willow Creek Farm, which raised over $8,000 for the Youth Triathlon Program. Additionally, the Y was fortunate to merge an existing youth triathlon program into Race 4 Chase through the Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski Foundation. Through that partnership, a gift of $20,000 was given to the Y’s Child Development Program to perpetuate safe, healthy places for children to thrive.

In these pages, you’ll find more information about all of the bright futures being initiated by the Greater Waterbury YMCA. We are more confident than ever that this YMCA will be sustainable for many generations to come.

The year 2013 broadened the view in our community like never before as the Y continued to extend its reach into every area of need for our neighbors. The Y constantly directs its energy towards the immediate needs of the community so that our friends and neighbors have access to Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility driven programs that build stronger families and individuals. Of the many remarkable things that happen at the Y every day, there were some incredible highlights to the year.

THE OUTDOOR CENTER AT YMCA CAMP MATAUCHA

3

Located in Watertown, about 10 miles from the Greater Waterbury YMCA, is the Outdoor Center at YMCA Camp Mataucha. For over 80 years, this beautiful piece of property on Smith Pond has provided thousands of kids with unforgettable outdoor experiences.

Through the generous support of the Woodward Fund, the Greater Waterbury YMCA was able to acquire an additional 33 acres of property next to camp, increasing the outdoor campus to a total of 80 acres. The additional property opened a new world of possibilities for year-round programming, recreation and enjoyment in a beautiful serene setting. This, in addition to the recent barn, yurt and archery improvements, have made YMCA Camp Mataucha a true outdoor center.

The Y offers group outings, birthday parties, expanded trail systems, holiday events, outdoor Wellness Programs, vacation camps, and winter activities. The Outdoor Center provides field days to area schools as well as sending hundreds of children to camp each summer through the United Way Campership Fund and the YMCA Open Doors program.

It’s part of the YMCA’s mission to help as many families as possible have access to outdoor recreation and quality family time together.

The YMCA extends its reach to families in our outlying service area of Watertown, Middlebury, Southbury, and Woodbury, as well as Waterbury, Wolcott, Prospect, Bethlehem and Thomaston.

EMPOWERING SURVIVORS TO HEAL AND THRIVELIVESTRONG AT THE YMCATwo years since its inception, LiveSTRONG at the YMCA has truly become one of the most impactful, powerful programs the Y has ever run. In 2013, a total of 68 survivors graduated from the program. The popularity of the program, as well as the diversity of the survivors we serve, spurred the Y to add an evening session that runs on the same days as the morning session – providing more wellness to more fierce cancer survivors!

In 2013, something truly heartfelt and remarkable came to be. The Y asked a group of runners if they would be willing to not only train for a half marathon program, but to raise money for LiveSTRONG at the YMCA while doing it. The response was amazing, and over 40 runners signed up to raise $500 each for the program while training for the race.

On October 12, 2013, “Team 13.1”, the Y’s first Hartford Marathon team, ran 13.1 miles for cancer survivors and raised a grand total of $24,000. The funds raised will continue to provide the program FREE of charge for cancer survivors in the community.

HOW LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA WORKS:

203.754.9622 | 136 WEST MAIN STREET, WATERBURY, CT

BUILDING STRONG SURVIVORS IN TWELVE WEEKS Classes include both a structured strength and cardio program with opportunities for meditation and sharing. Each individual is evaluated at a personal in-take session prior to the beginning of the program to learn of limitations, treatments, surgeries, and past exercise experience in order to help each participant meet their personal goals.

The first day of each session is a “Meet and Greet,” where survivors share their personal experience with their cancer and share their background/hobbies/family etc. The second day of each session is “Functional Assessment Day,” where basic fitness tests are conducted to measure flexibility, cardio endurance, range of motion, balance, and strength. The last week of the program, the same tests are administered so that progress is measured accurately in each area. The participants pledge to attend 20 out of the 24 classes, thus motivating people to continue throughout the program, and allowing them to get the best results. The survivors get a free 3 month YMCA membership during the class time, and come into the Y at any time during those 12 weeks. They are even allowed to bring a caretaker, family member or friend with them as a guest every time they come.

The survivors take a variety of different classes so they see all that the Y has to offer, in hopes that they find something they love, and will continue coming to the Y after the program ends. During the 12-week session, the survivors do Zumba, Tai Chi, Step Class, “Chair Chisel,” Yoga, Spinning, “Aerobics Plus” and Water Aerobics.

The entire group, instructors included, are so supportive of each other and spend their workout sessions chatting, laughing, and encouraging one another. The real beauty of the program is that when someone isn’t feeling well, the others can relate to those feelings. They become more than just “classmates” by exchanging contact info and checking in with one another throughout each week. AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PROGRAM, EACH PARTICIPANT IS OFFERED A SPECIAL GRADUATE REDUCED MEMBERSHIP RATE; TOGETHER WITH FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IF NEEDED, TO ENCOURAGE CONTINUED EXERCISE.

There is a joyous graduation and potluck celebration at the conclusion of every session. The positive outcomes of LiveSTRONG at the YMCA are plentiful! The main goal of the program is to enable survivors to get their “pre-cancer” lives back, and we do just that. Survivors say everyday tasks like walking up the stairs is easier, and balance and range of motion greatly improves. Their overall mood improves as they overcome depression and anxiety. Progressive training increases endurance, helps reduce fatigue levels, makes them stronger, more flexible, and just generally feel better and healthier. LiveSTRONG at the YMCA gives them hope that life goes on and can be better than ever.

A SHARP FOCUSLIVING OUR CAUSE THROUGH MISSION-DRIVEN AREAS OF FOCUS

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTWe believe that every child has great potential and should be given the opportunity and guidance to reach it.

HEALTHY LIVING We believe that a healthy life is achieved by actively striving for spiritual, mental, and physical well-being at all ages.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYWe believe that the Y has been given the honor, resources and responsibility to strengthen the foundations of community and family.
