Building Blocks of Geometry
How do you explain the basic terms of geometry?
A location. Without size. Represented by a dot. Named by a capital letter.
What is a point?
“Point A”
The set of all points.
What is space?
A series of points that extends in two opposite directions without end.
You can name a line by any two points on the line with a little line symbol above them.
What is a line?

B
What is a plane?
Planes are usually represented by a shape that looks like a tabletop or a parallelogram.
A plane is named by a single letter (plane m) or by three points (plane ABC).
Has no thickness and extends forever.
Part of a line.
Has one endpoint and extends forever in one direction.
What is a ray?
Part of a line or ray that extends from one endpoint to another.
What is a line segment?
Three points
Two lines

Two line segments
Identify the figures in the diagram.
Identify the line segments that are congruent in the figure.
