DESCRIPTION

In 2008 the New York MTA ran a tender to create a communications network in the 277 stations of the New York Subway. Anyone who has been to New York will have had experiences of how dark and dingy the subway can be. A new chairman realised that the MTA had unique assets in the form of high-density areas where there was no mobile coverage and wanted to transform the commuter experience by settling on an innovative solution. This project includes a $150-200M capex investment with 150 km of street fibre, over 3000 antennas and provides wireless coverage in an area of 20m ft². It is the world's largest DAS project and a unique example of a government instrumentality capitalising on its assets to achieve a public service outcome.
