Who is an

Active Citizen?

As an active citizen, you must:• Be vigilant and active in your community• Take note of issues that need to be addressed. For example: • Emergencies like fires or accidents

• Child labour

• Streetlights that are not turned off

• Fallen electrical poles, walls or trees

• Water or gas leakages

• Overflowing garbage bins• Engage with local bodies and community organisations to get such issues resolved

So, this year we will focus on Active Citizenship while continuing our efforts to save Electricity, Fuel, Water, Trees and Manage Waste.

FUEL: There are over 8.5 crore vehicles in India, most of which burn petrol or fuel, thus releasing CO2

WATER: Supplying Water, whether by pumping it from below the ground or transporting it in tankers, requires energy. Producing this energy releases Co2

WASTE: Producing, packaging, transporting, and disposing off products consumes energy. This energy consumption can be reduced if we Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

TREES: The more trees we cut, the less CO2 these trees will absorb from the atmosphere

To truly curb climate changes, we must therefore focus not only on Energy Saving, but rather on Resource Conservation!

An Enerji Champion, who engages proactively with local bodies and community organizations to resolve issues, is well-informed on Disaster Management, follows Civic & Moral Values and actively practices & propagates energy & resource conservation!

Tata Power Club Enerji is about creating active citizens working towards a better future, through conservation of energy, resources and moral & civic values, as well as disaster preparedness.

Combatting Climate Change/ Disaster Management and Preparedness + Energy & Natural Resources Conservation + Conservation of Moral and Civic Values + Engaging with Local Bodies and Community Organizations to Resolve Issues = Building a Brighter Future through Active Citizens

Since its inception in 2007, Tata Power Club Enerji has saved more than 21 million units of electricity, and sensitised more than 15.84 million people.

The production of electricity uses coal, water (hydro-plants), oil/ gas (bio-fuel), which releases huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere and depletes the natural resources.

CO2 is a greenhouse gas that acts as a blanket surrounding the Earth. This blanket prevents the sun’s heat from escaping into space, keeping the Earth warm. When we release more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, Earth gets even hotter, leading to Global Warming.

As a result of global warming, our cities are getting hotter and floods & storms are becoming common. These are all signs of Climate Change.

However, production of electricity is not the only source of CO2 emissions:Save

• When you notice a problem or issue, ensure your own safety before taking any action.• Call the relevant authority with the help of an adult.• Be ready to answer some basic questions related to the issue. Try to be as specific and clear as possible.• What is the issue?• Where did you notice it?• When did you see it?• Have you informed any other authority about it?

• Do not panic or cause others to panic• Stay calm and listen to instructions• Follow practised evacuation routes• Do not push and scream when moving to a safer area• Take care of those who need our help like babies, the elderly and the injured

In general, follow these rules to stay safe during a disaster:

Dealing withDisasters

Disaster Management: Floods and StormsPREVENT & PREPARE:

• Inspect our home for weaknesses and help to protect doors, drains and access points • Do not clog drains with litter and plastic bags• Ensure there is no exposed wiring in or around your house• Prepare an emergency safety kit that includes food supplies, water, medicines, torches and batteries• Make sure our family has an emergency plan: this includes a common safe spot to gather, emergency contact persons and numbers of emergency services• Make sure that each family member has an identity card• Move all valuables and important documents to a bank, if possible, or to a higher place in the house

DURING:

• Listen to forecasts and announcements by local government bodies and act accordingly• Avoid travelling during high tide and heavy rains, especially if they occur simultaneously• Evacuate low-lying areas and shift to safer places• Do not wade through flood water and if you must, hold on to railings or use a stick to guide you • Do not walk near riverbanks, open drains and seashores• Do not consume food and water that has been in contact with flood water• Ask an adult to switch off electrical and gas mains if our immediate surroundings are flooded • Do not use electrical appliances that have come in contact with water

Disaster Management: Heat Waves and DroughtsPREVENT & PREPARE:

• As a rule, make sure we and our family use only as much water as we need• Follow basic water conservation practices including taking a bucket bath, washing clothes only when there is a full load, watering plants with a can and dry-washing cars• Fix leaking faucets and turn off taps when not in use• Recycle water: for example, you can use water used to wash vegetables to water your plants• Store rain water and use it as much as we can• Do not use potable water for cleaning purposes• Do not waste drinking water; take only as much as we need

DURING:

• Store drinking water at home and use it as needed• Keep ourselves hydrated and stay away from the sun• Listen to announcements and messages by local government bodies and act accordingly

Facebook just rolled out a 'Town Hall' feature in the US, which lets users connect with offices of their representatives at all levels of government - city, state and federal. Users can also switch on 'voting reminders', so that one never misses an election day. Sociologists expect that with Facebook's civic engagement tools, there will be an increase in 'social pressure' to actively engage in civic life. Great example of technology driving active citizenship!

If you are among the select groups of students who spearhead eneregy conservation activities in schools

and societies, you can form Mini Club Enerhi. These Clubs are independent entities perform several

activities like street plays, rallies, cyclothons, and competitions to demonstrate how energy and resources

can be saved and many other activities. the efoorts of the Mini Clubs are featured on the Tata Power Club

Enerji website. The Best Mini TPCE of the Year is felicitated and rewarded at the end of the year.

and Carnival

Be a part of the National Quiz Competition for which the final are held in Mumbai. Along with Energy

Q, the students also participate in an Energy carnival, where they showcased their ideas and solutions

through projects, demonstrations and working models. The Carnival also showcases the lively and

creative side of students with dances, plays and one acts performed in the open ground to the audience.

Through TPCE, you can participate in events like Eart Hour and World Environment Day, Earth

Day. The Energy Brigade and mini TPCEs Perform various activities like society sensitisation and

Batti Bandh .

Participate in the National Energy Savvy Schools ( NESS) competition. Under NESS, Principals,

students and faculty members are empowered to initiate and execute energy saving activities that

would make their school an Energy Savvy School.

You can participate in our art contest for school children where students can express their

thoughts and visions on global warming and energy conservation.

As a part of TPCE, you can take part in an annual essay competition for schoolchildren across

various locations in the country. The competition mainly ranges from topics on energy

conservation, climate change and global warming.

Exclusively for our principals and mentors, this Meet is a special event organized at the begining of every

year to felicitate and recognise the contribution of all the school teachers and Principals. The schools

interact with members of the senior leadership team of Tata Power and share their feedback on the

programme and ideas for the way forward.

Go on a Plant visit to understand and experience how electricity is generated. As part of the trip

you will visit Tata Power's power plant and participate in discussions on the current energy

scenario and the need to save energy.

The Tata Power Club Enerji website and online module are interactive tools focusing on making the

club members participate, discuss and share their ideas on energy conservation. Club members can

find their way into this exciting pool of knowledge sharing. You can also register on the website,
