Community Perception 2014 - 15

Reputation: Talk amongst community members led people to believe that we had a strong influence of gangs and violence within our building and that NCMS was not a place that they wanted to send their children. The community support diminished and our reputation was that things were “out of control”.

Teacher Perception 2014 - 15

Quick Facts: Teachers didn’t feel supported by administration in decisions. Only 54.5% of staff actually enjoyed working at NCMS and 67.7% felt their colleagues had minimal class control. Staff also felt that discipline was not fair and consistent when coming down from the administrative team. Teachers felt the access to technology was minimal compared to other schools in our district especially because of the “newness” of our four-year old 21 million dollar building.

Quick Facts: 76% of students do not enjoy coming to school. 64% of students do not feel like they were treated fairly. 43% of students did not feel that feel cared about them. 45% of our students population did not feel safe at NCMS.

Laying the foundation… Modified our matrix to target areas which students frequent and simplified the

expectations per location.

Created lesson plans to teach the expectations during the first week of school and periodically throughout the school year.

Instituted a school wide classroom management strategy to reward students for following expectations.

● School wide classroom management tool to reward students daily for following PBIS expectations

● Students and staff put their name on the ticket and deposit into their grade level box in the cafeteria

● Monday’s, draw 4 names per grade level to select a prize both student and staff member listed

● Students earn this reward by having no ISS/OSS/bus discipline during the designated reward period.

● Reward takes place on students designated team

● Students sign up for a room: conversation, cards, crafts, computers

45 minutes

Students qualify for the major reward by having no ISS/OSS/bus discipline during the designated reward period

Rewards are for all three grades combined

All staff members assist with reward activities as directed

Carnival, Social, Bball Tournament, Water Day

1 hour 15 minutes

● A team earns a uniform free day by going 10 days in a row without an office referral

● All teachers of these students also get rewarded with a jeans day

● Students, staff, and parents vote through our website

● Monthly emails sent out to staff with what was said about them as a reminder of the positive impact they are making
