Whether as a newspaper edi-tor or Association executivedirector there arenrsquot easy answersto these questions If an Associa-tion executive director gets too far

in front of his membership hersquolllook back and find no followersThe balance is delicate andrequires a great deal of sensitivityA good executive will assesswhere the industry is at any givenmoment what the future likelyholds and the appetite for changeamong the membership Then heand his Board of Directors chart acourse for the organization thattries to pilot the industry to theright port

BATC has on manyoccasions faced this very situa-tion of leading our industryforward while being very aware ofthe challenges of change Min-nesotarsquos Green Path is a clearexample All of the researchacross the country indicates thatfuture home buyers will expectand demand that homes be con-structed or remodeled with astrong element of green And yetconsumer demand in our areaisnrsquot strongly evident yet Mostbuyers arenrsquot asking and mostappraisers donrsquot add value forgreen on appraisal So does BATClead the industry or wait fordemand to appear

Our forward-looking Board ofDirectors has elected to lead theindustry and has done so with aprogram that is flexible and realis-tic for our market With morethan 140 Green Path testedhomes in the spring Parade ofHomes our program is slowlygrowing But Green Path hasundergone changes even from itsinception reflecting market reali-ties We have tried hard to strikethe balance between leading andmeeting the market where itstands

We often face similar dilem-

mas at the legislature as do mosttrade associations To what extentdo we fight against proposed leg-islation and regulation And towhat extent do we assess thepolitical climate and concludethat some form of the regulationis inevitable and then seek tomold it to be more acceptableThere are several of these verychallenging issues at the doorstepof the Capitol this very sessionFor the home indoor sprinklersystem mandate our path ofabsolute opposition is clear For aradon disclosure requirementwersquore still assessing the politicsand determining our position

What I want to most impresson you is the thoughtful way inwhich staff and our electedleadership approaches theseissues We think thesedilemmas through as deeplyas we can We gauge wherewe think these issues areheaded We assess our capac-ity to create change that benefitsour industry We look to see ifthere are coalitions or partnersthat we can join with tostrengthen our position We con-sider the ramifications of adecision not only for this legisla-tive session but for futuresessions as well Will this partystay in control Will this legislatormove into leadership

write this it is snowing

We are well into spring

cleaning at BATC Housekeeping

items like developing a Policy

and Procedures manual and pol-

ishing up our Bylaws are well

underway Additionally this

quarter we will finalize our

strategic plan

BATC is doing lots of plant-

ing this spring with fresh

improvements to our member

website (BATCorg) Wersquoll be

completing a few remaining fea-

tures on our newly rebuilt

consumer site

(ParadeofHomesorg) as well as

creating revenue streams with

our new Artisan Home Tour

launching in 2014 BATC is

housing and we will cultivate

that space

Our industry is definitely

seeing sprouts of growth with

Parade of Homes entries up

more than 22 percent this spring

quality traffic growing and per-

mits climbing Our advocacy

fund under the new dues struc-

ture is blossoming and preparing

us to weather any storms ahead

BATC is answering the need

for growth in our industry work

force We hosted a job fair on

February 6th with almost 20

companies offering over 200

jobs and around 400 potential

employees in attendance We

even got a great PR story on

KARE11 with Marv McDaris

John Zirbes and Jon Coty It was

a well conceived event mdash kudos

to the task force And we are

planning to host more job fairs

in other quadrants of the Twin

Cities

Even though we suffered

through the great recession

BATC was better prepared than

many of our sister HBAs increas-

ing our ranking from 11th to

sixth largest HBA in the nation

We ARE the acorn that became

the mighty oak and we will con-

tinue to grow and improve that

brand and develop programs that

benefit you mdash our member

Just before BATCrsquos February Showroom Mixer

at Designer Marketplace a dozen members of

the BATC Remodelers Council gathered to

share tips and ideas that have worked for them

in marketing While we focused upon the

upcoming Remodelers Showcase the conversa-

tion included more general marketing thoughts

and issues Here are just some of the highlights

James and Rachel Julkowski shared that

they were a little leery of buying additional dis-

play ad space in the Guidebook but gave it a

shot last fall They were thrilled with the

results They recommended placement next to

your entry and including additional photos to

entice visitors to come in to see the whole pic-

ture Itrsquos a great branding opportunity that helps

a remodeler stand out too

Some of the other Showcase recommenda-

tions included connecting with the neighbors

theyrsquore excellent prospects Both mailers to the

surrounding neighborhoods and hosting a

party for the neighbors ahead of the tour make

a lot of sense

Several remodelers stressed that follow-up

is critical advising that just because you have a

sign asking folks to register that doesnrsquot mean

they will And we discussed how sometimes

you want homeowners to stick around during

the tour they can be your best sales people But

of course there are some homeowners that

simply shouldnrsquot be there so find ways to help

them enjoy a weekend away from their home

Security is always tricky We discussed how

important it is to staff a home well including

bringing in your subs to help mdash they can be

great sales agents too

Another suggestion was to have printed

information about the materials and colors

used in the house available for visitors You are

likely gathering that information for the home-

owner anyway (and if yoursquore not you shouldmdash

plus instructions on how to maintain and use

any of the systems and products)

Like most discussions today technology

was front and center While most everyone in

the room has a Facebook page fewer have

signed onto Houzz Those that do use it really

like it and recommend everyone join in Sales

teams are using iPads more and more in their

sales efforts And a technology discussion with

remodelers wouldnrsquot be complete without a

review of design programs Two programs dis-

cussed were Google Sketch UP and Chief

Architect But there was also a lament about

finding drafters and computer folks with

enough understanding of construction

One excellent tip came from Bryan Ogle of

Ogle Construction who does a sub walk-

through before starting the job The subs can

make great suggestions about their specialties

Marc Tomas with PipeRight Plumbing men-

tioned that they love to do walk-throughs and

are often able to save money and time by rec-

ommending better piping schematics and the

like He also suggested that sharing of market-

ing costs is a great way for subs to grow their

businesses too

If the advocacy activity fromfirst quarter of 2013 is a preview of what is to comethroughout the year buckleup Wersquove seen legislative and regula-

tory proposals that touch almost every

corner of our industry ranging from

street and park fees to disclosure

requirements to sales tax on services

even environmental stewardship require-

ments for paint and carpet

manufacturers and retailers There are a

few factors contributing to the pace of

regulatory proposals The first is a

unique political dynamic with the Gov-

ernorrsquos office Minnesota House and

Minnesota Senate all under the

hands of DFL leadership This

level of single-party leadership

hasnrsquot been seen in Minnesota

for nearly 25 years dating

back to 1989 Joining the

new dynamic is a polit-

ical youth movement

anchored in nearly 60

freshman legislators

These folks bring new

energy and ideas to the

process and are more

likely to chal-

lenge the lsquoitrsquos the way wersquove always done

itrsquo phenomenon Finally the growth of

the regulatory footprint has been occur-

ring for the past 30 years Incrementally

the federal state and local governments

have expanded their watch over our

industry in a mix of small and big bites

culminating in what we have today as a

heavily regulated industry

Proposals on the Table in 2013Today regulations account for 25-30

percent of the final price point of a

newly built

home as

this

shows Ideally BATC would focus on

measuring cost-benefits for existing reg-

ulations to see where we can increase

efficiencies Given the political dynamic

in Minnesota however we are focused

instead on trying to limit additions to

the existing regulatory footprint This is

not an easy task given the proposals on

the table in 2013

Keep Calm Carry On Stay EngagedWith the flurry of bills and regulatory

proposals impacting our industry itrsquos

easy to feel overwhelmed by the whole

thing The good news is that our process

requires all ideas good bad or some-

where in the middle to go through the

legislative and regulatory processes

BATC is committed to representing our

industry aggressively at the legisla-

ture regulatory agencies and

beyond Wersquove had

good luck so far in

2013 improving

a major success

where more

than 80 mem-

bers of the

Builders Associ-

ation of the

Twin Cities

(BATC) joined

other residential

construction

industry professionals from around the state to

descend on the Minnesota Capitol grounds to meet

and talk with representatives and senators about the

issues that affect the housing industry Wersquove also

had several members join our lobbying team for

individual meetings with legislators where we went

in-depth on the sprinkler mandate issue

BATC has a compelling message platform from which to press for reasonable and smartregulations At the heart of our message is our industryrsquos place in the broader economy Aswe all know the recovery of the housing market will be one of the most important factors ineconomic growth for Minnesota A healthy housing market means more good jobs more taxrevenue from economic growth and more families investing in an important asset mdash theirdream home Economists make it pretty clear mdash if the housing market doesnrsquot recoverneither will our economy

Many regulations are necessary and the support of BATC but we oppose those that areunneeded unfair or too costly

Since graduating from collegein 1984 Daryl Doehr has madehis living in windows and agood one at that Fresh out of theUniversity of Wisconsin at RiverFalls with a degree in economicsand quantitative analysis (thatrsquoswhy hersquos so darned good with num-bers) Daryl took a position asstatistical analyst with SNE Enter-prises manufacturer of Crestlineand Vetter windows Hersquos never

looked back mdash although he didtransition from crunching numbersto convincing customers when hemoved into sales in 1988

Sales is the perfect environment forDaryl who brings a calm steadyhand to everything he does Wersquovealready noticed this during BATCBoard meetings where his ques-tions and comments are always theright ones But thatrsquos not to say heisnrsquot good at dropping a cleverzinger now and again either

It was 2001 when Daryl moved toMarvin Windows and Doors tobring his sales skills to one of Min-nesotarsquos top window firms Theyknew talent when they saw it andpromoted Daryl to sales manage-ment in 2003 where hersquos thrived

He has only good things to sayabout his tenure with Marvinexplaining one of the main benefitsof working there is ldquoworking withpeople that are committed to a

common causerdquo He also likes thattherersquos a stability you donrsquot find ina lot of companies ldquobecausewersquore a good company to work foryou get to work with the samepeople for a long timerdquo

Darylrsquos longevity isnrsquot just withwindows hersquos been married toDenise for a quarter-century andthey have three children Bethwho follows in Darylrsquos sales shoes(in the software industry) hasgiven Daryl and Denise two grand-kids to dote on (Logan and Layla)Middle child Charle is 24 with aplan He currently works for CocaCola as a merchandiser part timewhile finishing business school inDuluth And Joe the baby at 22 iscurrently getting some real worldwork experience at a deli in aWyoming (MN) grocery store beforegoing back to school

No stranger to long hours and hardwork Daryl grew up on a dairy farmin Wisconsin He doesnrsquot miss the530 (am and pm) milking choresbut does miss the Holsteins Hisyouth included 4H and Future Farm-ers of America (FFA) includingearning a coveted FFA State FarmerDegree his senior year in highschool for a four-year project track-ing the herd

After work Daryl heads home toWyoming where hersquos greeted bytheir two rescue dogs Gracie is amiddle-aged yellow lab and SharPei mix while Scamper a youngCorgi and Dachsund mix joinedthem last year Yoursquoll often catchDaryl playing cards including pokercribbage rummy and sheepshead(if yoursquore from Wisconsin you mightknow that one) You might also findhis nose in a historical non-fiction

book He just finished Bill OrsquoReillyrsquosKilling Lincoln but his all-timefavorite is a story about Lewis andClark called Undaunted CourageThe other place you might findDaryl is at his church where hersquosserved as an Elder for more than adozen years

Outside Daryl loves to golf and fish(as you can see at left) Fishing forDaryl often means portaging hissmall boat to hidden lakes aroundthe state and once a year toCanada He scoffs at those walleyehunters mdash for Daryl itrsquos the mightynorthern or muskie that calls

If thatrsquos not enough Daryl has somefairly well-hidden talents at leastfrom his BATC family He played inboth his high school and collegebands handily managing the bari-tone trumpet and tuba and wasthe featured soloist as a collegesenior But of course music leads toacting and Darylrsquos career in thatarena is blooming having playedthe main character in his churchrsquosChristmas dinner theater for thepast 13 years

Itrsquos clear that Daryl had a strongand happy upbringing and ourhearts were heavy when his dadLyle passed away earlier this yearMarried for 71 years to Hazel Lylewas a great role model as a dadand husband and told Daryl oftenldquoIrsquom glad everybody likes some-thing different otherwiseeverybody would want to be mar-ried to my wiferdquo Daryl says hismom is doing pretty well and willcontinue to live in her ldquomother-in-lawrdquo apartment with Darylrsquos sister

Matt Blair opened his talk with a fun

trivia game handing out some of his

original photographs to the winners

Blair motivated the audience with his

personal story and how he had achieved

success through a continual commitment

to setting and reaching goals Blairrsquos 12-

year career as a professional football

player started with small milestones like

making the team (even if he spent most

of the time on the bench) But that was

just the beginning He continued to set

and pursue ever higher goals culmina-

tion in six consecutive Pro Bowls two

Super Bowls and making the Vikings All

Time List for tackles Blair is second on

the list with 1452 tackles

The Show Meanwhile 198 companies were tak-

ing over the 79200 square-foot exhibit

hall at the Minneapolis Convention Cen-

ter setting up 243 10x10 booths for the

trade show floor opening at 2pm

BRS was A Hollywood Styled Affair

this year and our exhibitors deliveredhellip

more on that later Greeted by an official

red carpet the builder remodeler archi-

tect and interior designer attendees had

an opportunity to check out the free one-

day show from 2 until 7pm Besides all

the BATC celebrities guests spotted Mar-

ilyn Monroe Cher and Napoleon

Dynamite toting his tots and all

Returning to this yearrsquos show floor

was the Minnesotarsquos Green Path Pavilion

The program which certifies energy effi-

ciency and home performance in home

construction and remodeling projects

debuted in 2012 The pavilion featured

recent program updates including the

new Energy Tested level that can provide

every energy-tested new home with a

unique Home Performance Report

(HPR)

For those checking out all the cool

exhibits this year there were a few way-

side rests to help stave off exhaustion

The Demo Stage was an ideal stop to take

a load off and take in some solid informa-

tion to improve their residential

construction businesses from six

exhibitors And six well-stationed bars

made sure no one got thirsty either

We know that all that walking can

work up an appetite so each attending

company received up to four free dinner

tickets This yearrsquos five star feast offered

buffet lines chock full of salad sides and

a chef-staffed carving station plus

dessert waiting at the sit-down dining

tables

For those attendees that were feeling

lucky the Stars of Fame Scavenger Hunt

offered a chance to win $500 cash just by

visiting the 16 participating exhibitor

booths First second and third place

prizes were also awarded to the best

builders any additional steps in

the building process were too

many We also found that the

HPR really does help homebuy-

ers feel confident about the

energy and green features in a

home without having to under-

stand a lot of confusing

language about insulation and

r-values

The Result MN Green Path Energy Tested OptionWe were very pleased to

announce the newest Green

Path option Energy Tested

with the 2013 Spring Parade of

Homes This option on the

Green Path is the natural next

step to

bring our

program

full circle

And itrsquos

already a

success

with one-

third of
