Importance of Structural Engineer
• Structural engineers design structures to withstand stresses and pressures, such as weather and human use. They ensure buildings and other structures do not bend, twist, collapse or vibrate and remain strong and secure throughout their use.
• Structural engineers help to design most structures including houses, theatres, sports venues, hospitals, office blocks, bridges, oil rigs, space satellites, ships and aircraft. They work in close partnership with architects.
• Structural engineers have to choose appropriate materials, such as bricks, concrete, wood and metal, to meet design specifications. When construction has begun, they are often involved in inspecting the work and advising contractors.
• They also examine existing buildings and other structures to test if they are structurally sound and still fit for purpose. Structural engineers have to make efficient use of funds and materials in order to achieve structural goals.

What are the responsibility of a Site engineer
A site engineer is part of the site management team, and takes some of the responsibility forsecurity, health and safety, and organising and supervising materials and people. Site engineersmark out the site, make sure designs are applied correctly and liaise with main and sub-contractorsand the site manager. Regular liaison with the client, its representatives, and any consultants isanother key part of the job.
What are the responsibility of a labour contractor and Mason
1) The labour contractor can not take responsibility of safety measures of your construction nor he can give you the structural design.
2) His first and foremost duty is to understand the detail drawing prepared by a structural engineer. Neither he can reduce nor he can add anything without permission from the Engineer.
3) He will ensure that his Mason and labour will perform their duty as per schedule and norms given by the Engineer,

INFRASTRUCTURE PVT. LTD.
Choosing the right materials
Cement• Reputed brand• Well stored, free from moisture• Latest manufacture (2-3 months)• Colour immaterial
Sand• Free from silt, clay and salts• May need washing
Stone Aggregate• Roughly square in shape• 10mm and 20mm in the ratio of 35:65
Steel• Reputed Brand• As per Structural Design

Foundations – depending on load and soil type
• Spread footing
• Isolated and Combined footing
• Pile foundation
• Raft foundation

RCC Construction
Reinforcement• Lap Joint - Minimum: 50 x rod diameter• Stirrup Spacing – Uniform as per design
Shuttering and De-shuttering• Leak proof• Formwork face to be treated with a mixture of diesel and grease• Columns: 24 hours• Slabs: 14 days• Beams: 21 days
Mixing and Pouring• Use Measurement Boxes• Avoid hand mixing if possible• Use Mini Batching Machine• Pour from not more than 5’ height• Use concrete vibrators
Curing• Within 12-24 hours of pouring• Ponding for horizontal surfaces• Wet jute mats (soti) for vertical surfaces
NO

Brickwork and Plastering
Brickwork• Bricks should be well burnt and hard• Soaked in water for 8hrs• Joint thickness not more than 10-12mm• Not more than 1m height per day• Proper curing for 10 days
Plastering• Use prepared mix within 1 hour• Use chicken wire mesh on joints between RCC and brickwork• Continuous curing for 10 – 14 days
Location Plaster Composition
Outside Plaster 1:4 to 1:5
Inside Plaster 1:5 to 1:6
Ceiling Plaster 1:3 to 1:4

Finishes
Painting• All cracks should be filled and smoothened• Plaster > Paper > Primer > POP > Primer > Paint (2-3 coats)
Waterproofing• Proper drainage slopes• Impermeable concreting – proper compaction• Reduce joints and corners• Apply DPC at plinth level• Chemical / Membrane based waterproofing for roofs
Flooring• Cement Concrete Flooring• Terrazzo Flooring• Tiles – 4 hours of soaking and 7 days of curing
25 January 2014BARUAH DEVELOPERS &

Utilities
Doors and Windows• Use holdfasts instead of bolts• Opening size and panel material depends on climate and light requirement
Electrical• Reputed Brands for fixtures• Proper earthing• Use Mini Circuit Breakers (MCB)• Location of Switchboards in accordance with interior design
Water Supply and Sanitation• Store 135 litres x no. of family members per day• Use water level sensor to save water and electricity and prevent spillage and seepage• Avoid cross connection between water supply and waste water pipes• Sanitary plans should be submitted for permission

Heat Insulation and Ventilation
Roof Insulation• Insulating & reflecting material• False Ceiling with air gap
Wall Insulation• Cavity Walls• Walls with low thermal mass – wattle & daub walls
Window shading and Glare Protection• Verandas and patios• Chajjas and sun shades• High reflectance glass
Ventilation• Adequate cross air circulation for all habitable areas• Louvers and Jaali walls

Rain Water Harvesting
Benefits• Reduces demand of supplied water• Reduces flooding• Recharges groundwater• Free
Uses• Washing• Flushing• Irrigation
How much?
Say 10mm (0.01m) rain everyday on a 100 sqm. roof, on a monsoon day
Total water that can be harvested per day = 0.01 x 100 = 1cum. or 1000 litresEnough for 7 persons
25 January 2014BARUAH DEVELOPERS &
INFRASTRUCTURE PVT. LTD.
Drainage Recommendations
• Site should not be raised more than 6” (150mm) above adjoining road level
• Storm water drainage plans should be submitted to Municipality for permission before
construction
• Projects with Rain Water Harvesting schemes should get fast track clearance
• Boring without Rain Water Harvesting should be prohibited in Urban Areas

Some Common Construction Mishaps
25 January 2014BARUAH DEVELOPERS &
INFRASTRUCTURE PVT. LTD.
Honeycomb In RCC
1. In concrete, a rough, pitted surface resulting from incomplete filling of the concrete against the formwork, often caused by using concrete that is too stiff or by not vibrating it sufficiently after it has been poured.2. Voids in concrete resulting from the incomplete filling of the voids among the particles of coarse aggregate, often caused by using concrete that is too stiff.3. In sandwich panel construction or in some hollow-corridors, resin-impregnated paper is fabricated into a network of small, interconnected, open-ended, tubular hexagons laminated between two face panels to provide internal support
