Assertiveness is also an important soft skill to be developed in order to succeed in professional as well as personal life. Self-confidence is the first step towards assertiveness. Besides self-confidence, ability to communicate clearly, being able to speak up your mind, ability to say ‘no’ when needed, and being able to utilize body language as a supplemental form of communication. Other skills included are knowing when to be assertive, handling bullying at workplace, managing stress and avoiding conflicts. You get to know about assertive skills. Then, let us evaluate your assertive skills.

For example, if your boss had given you an urgent work to be done by evening and you had an appointment with doctor at 4’O clock, what will you do? Which one will you prefer? Will you complete the work given by your boss or will you stand by yourself and will let you know your boss that you had an appointment with doctor and will complete the work as soon as you arrive to the office the next day? Which option would you prefer?

If I’m in your situation, I would definitely prefer the second option. I would stand by myself and confidently explain to the boss about the appointment with doctor in a professional way without hurting relationships. But, when this situation arises most of the people loss their confidence levels and surrender themselves to the work and some people lose temper and behaves aggressively. But, there is a slight difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness. If you are assertive towards an incident, then it turns peaceful and pleasant one. If you are aggressive, than an unpleasant atmosphere would be created.

There is a fine balance between an assertive behavior and an aggressive behavior. An aggressive person undermines the rights and self-esteem of another person. Aggressive behavior includes ignoring someone and not considering another person’s feelings, telling rather than asking, and rushing someone unnecessarily.
