A Resume Is Not

What can you use a resume for? ● University applications● Job applications● Internship applications● Scholarship applications● Honor society applications● A fan, if you fold it up like an accordian● . . . And to give to Mrs. Bell, because

she’s going to do recommendations for you. And because she asked you for them :-)

Resumes are fun! High fives, everybody!

Some Notes on Formatting● Fonts: Footed, Not too small, Shoot

for two● Colors: Depends on the field, Use

only to highlight● Headings: Can be larger font,

different font, different color, etc. *Also, set them off by bolding, underlining *Also, rearrange their order according to what is appropriate for your application

A Word about Wording● Avoid using full sentences and

the word “I”● Describe your activities using

active verbs (see handout)● If currently engaged in

activity, use present tense● If no longer engaged in

activity, use past tense● Bring in data & details where

possible● Polish the resume!

HeadingInclude:

● First and last name, featured prominently● Mailing address● E-mail● Phone number

Optional: LinkedIn, Online portfolio address

Don’t include: Birthdate, Parent contact info., Non-professional social media

Summary or Objective● First section ● Can have a heading, or may go without● Objective states your purpose for

submitting a resume● Summary highlights your best, most

standout qualities.● Summary can show how you match with

the job and company● Keywords● Active● Descriptive

Education● Next heading under the Summar

(for now)● Reverse chronological order● Include: School name, City (and

maybe the state, too), Date of attendance or date of graduation, Diploma or degree received

● You may choose to list the expected graduation date

● Optional: GPA (Only if it is awesome), Class ranking (Only if it is awesome)

Other Great Headings● Leadership Experience● Volunteer Service/ Service/ Community Activism, etc.● Honors and/or Awards● Work Experience/ Career Experience/ Job Experience● Highlighted Skills/ Skills/ Accomplishments● Languages

Other Great Headings, Ctd● Arrange them according to what is most important to highlight to get the job/

position● Within headings, arrange experiences in reverse chronological order, or from

most significant to least significant● Try to include: *Name of job/ title/ honor, *Date, *Location, *Organization

associated with the experience, *Your responsibilities, if pertinent
