43 Year Mission! It is our greatest desire to provide our customers with top quality, well-grown plant material at a fair and honest price. We will strive to provide an unmatched selection of old favorites and underused, hard-to-find items, along with the newest varieties on the market. We will eagerly share our horticultural knowledge gained from years of education and experience. Lastly, we offer all this in a spirit of fun and lightheartedness.

New Decade, New Look?!?

Isn’t it funny how over the years your sentiments and ideas about

your garden and what you love (or hate about it) change? In our 40+

years of gardening, we have transitioned through many phases. And

while plant and design trends swing, there are practiced, yet simple

design rules that hold up. We find that no matter the fad, we use those

rules over and over again. Whether you’re going native, embracing

minimalism, or doing a full-blown Christopher Llyod landscape,

consider these simple concepts:

1. Conditions Count! A plant in the wrong site makes you and

your plant unhappy—think Sedums in a bog—that’s a no-go.

2. Foliage is king! It matters more than any flower. Use

contrasting foliage textures and shapes to create definition

between plants.

3. Lastly, plant for you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as

they say; if you look at your garden and smile then all is right

with the world.

“Can this be all there is to it?” you ask. Maybe not quite, but it is a

perfectly acceptable leaping-off point! Just applying these few thoughts

early in the game can genuinely help you reap significant benefits, and

you won’t need an education in horticulture to get it, just the right

garden center.

Stone Wall Follies Update

This is part where we espouse and cheer about The Follies. Well, we’re

not cheering this go-round. Everything is up in the air and all over the

place. Arranging teachers has become a challenge that we are diligently

engaging in but have no winter updates to report. We’ll talk again in

the flower show issue, which brings us back to where we started.

Dear reader, Thank you for picking up this copy of

Upstate Gardeners’ Journal. This is an exciting year for us, as it is our 25th in publication! Looking back, I can hardly believe it, but it is through the constant support of our readers and advertisers that we’ve been able to do this for so long, and we are very, very grateful.

If you are a subscriber then you probably (hopefully!) received a copy of (585) magazine in the mail recently. I’ve been the editor-in-chief for more than four years now, and in November bought that chunk the business from its parent company. We thought it would be a good idea to send a sample copy to all of our subscribers, just in case you are interested in great Rochester-area lifestyle information. If you are, we sincerely hope you sign up for a subscription—we’ve already amped up the gardening coverage, and there is a lot more to come—plus food and drink, culture, music, profiles of interesting people, and anything else we can dream up. Thank you again—
