‘Teaching in all areas is characterised by high levels of individual support and guidance. Teaching displays excellent subject knowledge. Relationships are very good in lessons and in

extra-curricular activities.’

• OFSTED •

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most crucial decisions you will ever have to make. The right decision will be profoundly rewarding for your child’s future.

Budmouth seeks to provide parents with as much information as possible. All receive a brochure and are encouraged to visit our website. There are two Open Evenings in early October when parents and children are welcome to meet staff and students and see what makes Budmouth so special.

Parents recognise that Budmouth provides a secure and happy learning environment. Inspectors have noted that the college has successfully created a supportive and caring atmosphere in which students grow and flourish. We are firmly committed to traditional values and high standards.

Children join the college from all over Weymouth and Portland and to ensure that they feel secure and happy in making the move we provide:

• Pastoral care questions: [email protected]

‘Students’ personal development and well-being, including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness, are outstanding. Students thoroughly enjoy their education at the college

they are extremely proud and pleased to be at Budmouth.’

• OFSTED •

How a child settles into college, feels happy and secure and is encouraged will determine their success. With this in mind, the college has established the faculty of ‘Cared For’ to provide a holistic approach to pastoral care which supports every student right through their secondary career. The faculty seeks to empower students to be able to make a life for themselves that is fulfilling, enjoyable and responsible.

Every youngster will meet with their tutor before they join the college, and that tutor and their Year Leader will stay with them right through their secondary career. This relationship is vital as it allows the tutor to get to know the student and establishes continuity of care.

As well as their personal tutor, every student has an academic tutor with whom they meet on a regular basis throughout the year to monitor progress and achievement. Any problem can be discussed and targets set and these are then highlighted to the staff and parents.

The college also has teams of trained Peer Mentors and Peer Mediators who work with students to make them feel secure and to resolve any issues they may have.

The college aims to develop confident individuals and successful learners who are able to lead fulfilling lives and make a positive contribution to society. We look to extend horizons and raise aspirations by helping our students to discover their talents and interests.

In particular, we will equip our students to:

•Enjoylearningandachievethehigheststandardsincollegeandinlife

•Liveasafe,healthylifebydevelopingmentalandemotionalwellbeingandfosteringeffectiveandfulfillingrelationships

•Makedecisionsbasedonthevaluesthatunderpinoursociety

• New campus questions: [email protected]

‘There is excellent vision, drive, and energy and an infectious commitment to serving pupils’ needs by constant improvement. Standards are rising at a much faster rate than nationally. Behaviour in and around the College is excellent, it would be difficult to find another school

where students are so well behaved.’

• OFSTED •

For children to feel happy and be confident in their learning, it is vital that they are provided with a comfortable and supportive environment. To this end, we are now in the process of rebuilding our entire campus. This project marks an exciting milestone in the continued development of Budmouth Technology College and one from which all our students will gain enormous benefit.

Our campus which covers some twelve acres, overlooks the Fleet, is on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and is undoubtedly one of the most attractive locations in the country. The new architectural plan provides many additional features including specialist areas for all subjects with integrated ICT throughout. Our plan also includes user-friendly play and relaxation areas for students. The architectural brief required that the rebuilding project created a campus ambiance through landscape spaces and remodelled recreation areas.

Our new campus will include:

•LectureTheatre

•Specialistsuitesforallsubjectareas

•Artaccommodationtoinclude3Dareas

•Diningandrecreationhalls

•Anew6thFormCentre

•AcentralResourcesCentreforallfacultyareas

•AirconditionedICTsuitesintegratedrightacrossthecollege

Construction of the new building, which will not interfere with current facilities, will commence in 2008 and the major work will be completed by 2010. We will gain a state of the art hi-tech campus designed to meet the needs of a Technology College and ideally suited for delivering a high quality education so essential for the success of our students in the 21st Century.

‘The breadth and quality of curriculum is exemplary. As a technology College, Budmouth offers an outstanding range of both academic and vocational courses.’

• OFSTED •

At Budmouth Technology College we strive to ensure that every student fulfils their potential and we believe that all children are entitled to an education that will enable them to develop themselves intellectually, socially, creatively and emotionally. We also believe that children should be able to live and develop as happy and valued human beings.

Academic achievement is one of our major successes; we want each individual student to achieve the best possible results.

As well as providing the subjects required by the National Curriculum, the college has innovative Key Stage 3 and 14-19 programmes ensuring a relevant curriculum for all students. We offer a wide variety of academic and vocational courses in Years 9, 10, 11 and the Sixth Form. Our courses, which include GCSE, BTEC, Diplomas, A/S and A level, are designed to match the needs of individual students. Literacy and Numeracy drive everything we teach and our students leave well-equipped for the world of work, with skills they can easily transfer.

Students are not placed in mixed ability groups, but in the academic set which best suits their ability in different subjects

All students have academic targets and their subject teacher and Year Leader monitor progress continually. Parents, students and staff are able to monitor academic progress against individual targets. At the end of each year, the college celebrates the achievements of its students with a Prize Giving Ceremony.

Budmouth selects some of its students and all students are tested on arrival to identify those with special gifts or talents. These students are taught from the beginning of Year 7 in several academically accelerated groups

Academically accelerated students are offered:

‘Outstanding Design & Technology provision confirms the success of the school as a Technology College. The breadth of curricular opportunities and innovation provide pupils with a varied

and very worthwhile technological experience. GCSE results are well above average.’

• OFSTED •

Budmouth promotes Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate GCSE courses, which are the very best foundation for A level sciences, as well as offering students the choice of an applied science course. Additionally, for students who prefer a more vocational course, we offer GCSE Applied Science. This leads onto an AS and A2 in Applied Science. The science faculty is keen to create independent learners and has introduced the CASE programme for Years 7 and 8 as well as a skills based course for Year 9. These initiatives will prepare students more fully for GCSE and A level studies.

The Science Faculty has access to a wide range of Information & Communications Technology teaching resources, including data loggers and advanced simulation software packages.

A purpose-built £2million Design & Technology Centre includes an extensive range of Information & Communications Technology hardware and software as well as an extensive range of ICT hardware and software including two laser CNC cutting machines.

Our Design & Technology staff have a strong belief in the teaching and learning of both modern and traditional skills and techniques as part of life long learning and opportunities for future careers. D & T is hugely popular with our Sixth Form and regularly attracts plaudits from visiting inspectors and industrialists.

‘Relationships between teachers and pupils are excellent, pupils respond to teachers’ evident care with respect and by consistently giving of their best.’

• OFSTED •

ICT is a dynamic and ever changing skill and our staff strive to ensure that lessons reflect the changing needs of students, society and employers. Students are encouraged to use ICT within all subject areas to effectively support their whole learning experience.

ICT is at the very heart of our teaching and learning and the college has a culture that embraces technology. All students study ICT and the fact that we have one computer for every three students enhances learning across all subject areas. Students will complete their KS3 work by the end of Year 8 and at KS4/5 students can take a variety of courses including BTEC, A level, European Computer Driving Licence and a Diploma in Digital Applications. The facilities around the college are impressive, with computers in all faculty areas as well as ten dedicated computer rooms.

ICT is delivered in a whole series of imaginative ways including use of the Intranet, Internet and CD-ROM based materials. The beauty of this approach is that it allows students to work at their own pace and to study whenever and wherever they have access to a computer. This may be in or out of lesson time, in specialist areas of the college or at home.

Development of ICT skills is encouraged through opportunities to participate in real life ICT projects. Students have been involved in a wide range of business opportunities from developing an advertising campaign for a local manufacturing company to planning and designing a web site and producing interactive computer games.

its well-established ethos and climate of honesty, trust and respect, the school has a strong sense of community in which all pupils play an equal and important role. Pupils are valued for their

contribution to school life and there is a feeling of harmony throughout.’

Our curriculum is designed for the benefit of all students and increases self-esteem, compassion and a sense of service. We seek to meet a wide range of expectations and cater for all levels of ability. We encourage participation at every level, always promoting physical skills and personal fitness.

‘Regular involvement by all pupils in outdoor adventure lessons and a vast number of residential trips greatly enhance leadership qualities, teamwork and self-esteem.’

• OFSTED •

Budmouth has one of the most advanced outdoor education programmes of any school in the United Kingdom. We are committed to the full development of all our students and we know that Budmouth is a model of excellence in this field.

Annually the college fields over forty residential adventurous trips within the United Kingdom involving some one thousand students. These will see a new student involved in a Fresher’s Camp on Dartmoor and build-up to place senior students on major projects across the developing world.

Each May our students undertake the Ten Tors Challenge which involves them crossing up to fifty five miles of Dartmoor within thirty five hours. To date, Budmouth has trained over fifty successful Ten Tors Teams.

The college also runs the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at all levels and some one hundred students participate annually, some progressing to receive their award at Buckingham Palace. The benefits of the award to young people include developing self-confidence and self-reliance; gaining a sense of achievement and a sense of responsibility; discovering new skills, interests and talents and developing leadership skills and abilities.

Budmouth is one of only fifty state schools in the UK with a Combined Cadet Force. The CCF encourages our students to develop powers of leadership and to promote the qualities of responsibility, self reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance. In addition to weekly activity sessions, cadets participate in an annual summer camp and have the opportunity to attend over one hundred courses annually, which cover everything from power boating to parachuting. Senior cadets can join annual exchanges to Canada and Greenland and undertake a BTEC in Public Services.

Every year our young people join major expeditions to the developing world. Over a period of a month they will mountaineer, trek, white water raft, mountain bike and jungle train as well as undertaking a community project. Past venues have included India, Ecuador, China and Kenya; where our students have built and now support a health centre.

Visiting artists give students the opportunity to experience a wide variety of performance styles. Students put on regular public performances which annually include a Dance Display, Musical, Christmas Concert, Performance Showcase, community events and open evenings.

In July 2008 the Performing Arts at Budmouth received the Artsmark Gold Award.
