The budget sets the scale for the

scientific work to be accomplished

Page 4: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

If the budget is too big for the proposed work, your proposal will not be funded

Budget Justification

Page 12: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

The budget justification is your opportunity to show

the reviewers you not only know what must be done (science) but how it will be done at

UF

Page 13: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Every item in the budget requires a

justification

Page 14: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

If time or resources will be provided by

others to your work, you must have a letter from them documenting the

committed resources

Page 15: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Salary + Fringe:Time must be spent

on the grantMatch effort

reporting

Page 16: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Equipment:The purchase must be required for the

proposed workThe equipment must be dedicated to the

proposed work

Page 17: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Supplies:All items justified

All costs reasonableCosts must be

attributable to the proposed work

Page 18: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Tuition:UF in-state graduate

student tuition is $12,590*

*12 credit hours. http://www.sfa.ufl.edu/basics/cost-of-attendance/

Travel:Every trip should be

justifiedCosts should be consistent and

reasonable

Page 22: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Direct and Indirect Costs

Page 23: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Indirect Costspay for the things you don’t pay for – space, electricity,

furniture, administrative staff

Page 24: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

UF returns a portion of indirect costs to

the dean, chair, center and principal

investigator

Page 25: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

The UF indirect cost rate is 49%*

*Other rates may apply. See: http://research.ufl.edu/research/proposal/fa-rates.html

Page 26: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

UF uses Modified Total Direct Costs (MTDC) to budget

indirect costs*

*Unless funding agency requires a different base.

Consortia

Page 29: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

A consortia is a legal agreement between research institutions to participate in the

work if funded

Page 30: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Allow a minimum of three months to

create the consortium for your

proposal

Page 31: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Decide who is in the consortium

Page 32: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Decide the work to be performed by each consortium

member

Page 33: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Decide the budget for each consortium

member

Page 34: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Consortium members pay

indirect costs at the rate of their home

institutions

Page 35: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

In addition, you pay up to $25,000 in indirect costs for each consortium

member

Page 36: Budgets, Budget Justifications and Consortia

Work with an experienced grant administrator and

the Division of Sponsored Research in developing your

consortium
