Greetings Everyone!
Please join me in taking this opportunity to say "Thank You" to all of you who supported the 2016 BAA Grand National. A wonderful time was had by all, and there was a lot of positive feedback. Special thanks goes to the Houston Budgerigar Society for hosting this truly spectacular event. Many individuals were involved in making the show such a huge success and I hope to thank everyone individually throughout the year. I’d like to give a special thanks to those who attended and provided support from a long distance. Without your help, the show wouldn’t have been the huge triumph that it was.
Tibor Gyerko, our guest judge from Hungary, presented a very informative program featuring birds from the top breeders on the continent. Nearly all of the exhibitors were in attendance, and the awesome presentation was really valued.
Malcolm Taylor, our judge from South Africa, had used our judging format on a previous visit. Tibor caught on quickly, so the show progressed smoothly. All of us enjoyed their helpful and educational observations. Congratulations to all the winners.
Please welcome Greg Arena, our new Membership Secretary, and Jim Fleeker, our new Recording Secretary. I’d like to give a well-deserved, thank you to Virgil Oliphant and Herb Doucet for their work in those positions over the past few years. I would also like to welcome Sophie Floyd, Webmaster and George Hollingsworth, Journal Editor as members to the BAA Board.
I would like to apologize for the lack of suitable conference call ability. To insure that this never happens again, the Board of Directors voted to obtain the proper equipment for future conference call use. Anyone wishing to discuss the meeting can call me at any time. In 2017, members will have the option of paying for an electronic membership or a domestic printed Journal membership which will cost an additional $15.00. Members choosing the e-membership will view their Journal online, and the members selecting

the printed membership will have the Journal mailed to them. The new membership applications will have a box to check with your preference.
In order for the Journal to be a success, George needs everyone’s help in providing material. Articles, pictures, show comments, judge comments, would all be appreciated. Anyone can submit and if each of us would submit one article, story, or interview he would have content for the full year. Please note, if you are a Champion Breeder, I will ask you for an article. In the near future, contests will be held for the best articles and pictures submitted.
Expect to see new changes to the website. A PayPal account for paying for membership and band orders will soon be available. Please be patient with the website conversion as this is a huge undertaking which has been complicated by the hosting service updating their operating platform a few months ago.
The East Pennsylvania Budgie Club has been selected to host the Grand National in 2017. Sponsoring a Grand National is a huge undertaking requiring extensive organization and planning. The show chairman is Rich Werner, and he will appreciate any help and input. Tentative dates are 22-24 September 2017.
The Show closed with the Awards Banquet and Elite Auction. Thanks to all of you who contributed as either buyers or donors. Congratulations to the winners of Breeder of the Year Awards. Congratulations also to those who will advance divisions in 2017.

Greetings everyone! Here are the final standings from the 2016 show season. Congratulations to the winners! As always, if you think the numbers are incorrect, let me know. We want to get it right. If you’d like to see the entire Excel spreadsheet, it will be on the website. If you’d prefer for me to send it to you, I can. Email me at [email protected]. When viewing the spreadsheet, the points for each show are listed on page one, as well as the standings for each division. Page 2 (bottom left corner) will have the CCs for each show with the totals on the bottom of the sheet. Please remember, in order for the CCs to count for CC exhibitor of the year, there must be two exhibitors, or the bird must place in the top ten in show or top ten Rare. This is different from the requirements for advancement from Intermediate to Champion. For advancement purposes, there must be at least three exhibitors and five birds in the section. Even though the CC may not count towards the end of the year awards and advancement, birds with no competition receive a CC certificate for the show.
Sometimes the numbers you see will look a little different from the points that you may calculate from the show report’s number of birds and exhibitors. This is because the Junior, Novice, and Intermediate Rare birds are added to the totals for those divisions. The same thing is also true if a Champion bird doesn’t make the top ten in show. The Champion Rare birds will be added to the total number of Champion birds. Here’s the bottom line… the points that a bird will receive is based on the number of birds it has placed above plus itself. In addition points are awarded for the best awards in each division, but not for show. Best awards are: Best in Show (BIS) 25 points, Best Opposite Sex (BOS) 20
points, Best Young (BY) 15 points, and Best Young Opposite Sex (BYOS) 10 points.

Rules for Advancement
These are taken from the BAA Bylaws
Section 15.01. Definition of Junior Exhibitor. In order for a breeder to exhibit in the Junior division, that exhibitor must be at least seven years of age. This age limitation is based on the widely accepted premise that the person should be an active participant in the care and breeding of the birds. Junior members who are under the age of seven and have been exhibiting birds prior to the 2009 show season are grandfathered as
Junior. A Junior who wins either Best Junior Best Junior Opposite Sex, or Best Junior Young three times with three different birds shall advance to the Novice ranking the following year provided there are at least 2 exhibitors at each show when these wins are achieved. If they do not achieve the three wins while a Junior, they must move to the Novice Division the show season following their seventeenth birthday.
Section 15.02. Advancing from Novice to Intermediate. Novice breeders who win Best Novice, Best Novice Opposite Sex, or Best Novice Young with three different birds at three different shows shall then advance the following year to Intermediate as long as one win is Best Novice. Each win must be at a show where there are at least three Novice breeders showing. If they have shown at the Novice level for at least three years and do not have the wins, they may select to move into the Intermediate ranks the following show season if they so desire. Once a Novice breeder receives their wins they shall advance to the Intermediate division the next show season. A Novice wishing to move to Intermediate without their wins may do so, but they may not move back to Novice.
Section 15.03. Advancing from Intermediate to Champion. Intermediate breeders must win six Challenge Certificates, in any color sections, with 6 different birds. There must be a minimum of five birds from three exhibitors in the section and there must be five Champion breeders exhibiting in the show, with a minimum of twenty-five champion birds entered for the wins to count. In addition, the Intermediate exhibitor must win one of the best in show awards (Best, Best Opposite Sex, Best Young, or Best Young Opposite Sex) and place one bird in the top six best in show. For these wins to count there must be a minimum of three champion exhibitors entered in the show and 25 champion birds shown.
Section 15.04. Recognition of ABS wins and Ranking. All exhibitor wins at ABS shows shall be recognized under the BAA system. Exhibitors must show in the same division in BAA and ABS.

Connie and myself had a terrific weekend and we look forward to many more. I have to congratulate Steve and many more, who I can't remember all their names, for putting on an excellent show. The venue was outstanding and we are proud to be a part of a great organization. It was good to see old friends and meet new ones at our first show. We have the bug and are very excited about breeding and showing this great bird.
I would also like to ask for the organization to promote in the future the open class for purchased birds. This would be good in a number of ways I think; it would boost the number of birds entered, and it would help new fanciers to the hobby get used to filling out entry forms and get to know what a show is all about. Also the breeder could compare there purchases against other purchased birds to give a prospective of where they need to go to succeed.

I thought that the dinner on Friday night was exceptional, and actually preferred it to what we had at the banquet. Many thanks to Calvin Pape for donating it. Also, the food in the hospitality room was really delicious, even if I had to fight Julie for my clementine’s. She thought I wanted them for my sugar gliders, but I only had two of them and they just eat one tiny slice each. My mother and I ate the rest of them.

The Houston club should be commended for putting on an exceptional show. They have one of the best groups of working members in the country. Everyone pitches in and contributes. The venue was amazing, and it was great being able to hold the meetings in the hospitality suite. The presentation by Tibor was really nice, and the lecture room
in which it was staged was perfect. My one regret is that the people calling in on conference weren't able to hear well. That will never happen again, as BAA voted to purchase new equipment, which has already been acquired. We won't ever have this issue again. All in all, a great weekend. Well done Houston!

Grand National Show in HoustonRich Werner
I was asked to write a article about the Grand National Show in Houston. I also wrote an article last year about the National Show in Dallas. I don't know what more can be said than to say that these folks in Texas go all out for these shows. They are top notch
shows. I have been involved in the hobby of birds for many years have been to shows all over the country. These folks really go all out and do a great job to make sure everyone is welcome. I only hope the rest of the clubs that tackle the undertaking of putting on a National can do them justice. The one thing I know is the folks within this hobby will help any club any way they can.
At the National shows there are meetings within the BAA a judges meeting and a board of directors meeting. These meetings are open to the general membership to attend if they wish. I for one attend these meetings it is a great way to pick up and learn things. It is also a way to see the inner workings of our club. I wish more people would attend these meetings because this is a way for us as a member to get our voice heard to the board. I have voiced concerns at these meetings about my opinion on some issues the board was discussing and they truly listened to what I had to say. I would like to see a general membership meeting held at the National this might help to get more people involved in the club.
We as the members of the BAA really need to try to get more involved within the club. I know there are many of you that already go all out for the Hobby and I thank you for your efforts. For the rest of us let’s try to help out and make this hobby great. We all know the joys of the hobby, friendship, competition, travel. But there are many things we can do to help. Something as small as a few paragraph article sent in will be a huge help or send in some pictures. Any subject for an article will help I for one will try myself to follow my own suggestion and write article for George. Remember it’s our club we do have a say and have the right to exercise this. In return for these rights we have to help the club also. Just some food for thought.

My Trip to EnglandPart 1

In late September I had the opportunity to judge the Croydon & District BS and South Eastern BC show in Smallfield, which is in Surry, England. Based on the number of
entries, 390 this year, it’s classified as a Silver Championship show. Entries have to be turned in the Monday prior to the show and no late entries are accepted. That would be a huge change for most of us. 271 birds actually made it to the show.
What a fantastic experience it was! Ghalib Al-Nasser, who many of you know from his many judging assignments in the United States, picked me up and got me settled in my hotel for the evening. My room didn’t have a phone or any electrical outlets and I immediately panicked. How would I fix my hair for judging the next day? I was a little disoriented. I’d left Texas on the morning of the eighth, and a couple of hours after arriving it was time to go to dinner on the ninth! My fellow judges, Linda and Terry Jukes and John Crosby, who was wearing a UNC shirt, picked me up and took me to dinner. Linda and Terry had been friends of Dave and Pam Collier when they lived across the pond. John is one of the major workhorses for the BS. I was certainly in good company. Of course they took me to a pub, and of course I had fish and chips. Yes, it was very good. I discovered that I really like the Shandy, which is beer mixed with a carbonated soft drink like ginger ale, or juice, usually apple of orange. Terry and John taught me what to look for in tasting quality whiskey. I had to put a stop to that fairly quickly! What a fun evening.
The next day was the show. It was a challenge, but I managed to fix my hair. The judging procedure is very different from what we do here. The only people allowed in the show venue during judging are those that are working the show. Each judge is assigned different varieties and awards. I had Crests, Double Factor Spangles, Opaline Cinnamon, Opaline Green, Dark Green, and Sky, which was the largest section. I was also assigned Champion Young Bird, Beginner Any Age, and Junior Young Bird. Linda, Terry, John, and I selected the Major Specials (Best in Show Awards) together.
I had three stewards assigned to me. Gavin Carter was my chief steward, and he handled keeping all of the paperwork straight. There is a significant amount of it; much more than we have, and the judge has to sign off on each section. Upon completion of the show, the judge must also remove the birds that have received awards from their cages to make sure that its ring (we call them bands) matches the entry information. The other stewards kept the birds coming.
Judging the birds by section was also very different from what we do. I’m going to use sky for an example. They start with the Junior sky birds: young hens, young cocks, old hens, and old cocks. Then they bring the Beginner Skys, then Novice, then Intermediate, and finally Champion. The Best Sky is selected from this group, as is the Sky Best Opposite, Best Any Age, Best Any Age Opposite Sex, Best Young Bird, and Best Young Bird Opposite Sex. At the completion of the judging for each section, the birds are reshuffled back to their divisions. When all sections are complete, the judging for each division is done and the Major Specials are selected.
Lunch is served when judging is completed. Yes, I had fish and chips, and yes, it was very good. Following lunch, the exhibitors were allowed to enter the show venue for the
awards ceremony, during which all of the winners are announced. The birds remain staged for a significant amount of time following the awards ceremony. There is a printed catalogue with all of the entries and cage numbers listed, and this, along with a show report, can be purchased. The exhibitors can go through the birds using these documents to determine how the birds were placed.
There were several other noteworthy differences that I’d like to mention. Budgerigars of Color were judged and seem to be gaining popularity. They have a standard which deviates greatly from the qualities we value in the exhibition type birds. The birds in this division are required to have a protruding beak that is set out from the face, and there is supposed to be a break between the base of the skull and the body, among other things. For those of us that show exhibition birds, beakiness and a nipped neck are both considered faults. There are also pair and team classes. A team consists of five birds, all the same color. Pairs and teams are judged on uniformity. A team of three tremendous birds with two that are significantly inferior, will place below five inferior birds that all look alike. There are special show cages for showing the teams. I also found it interesting that Dominant Pied, Clearflight Pied, and Dutch Pied show in the same section, and Recessive Pied and dark Eyed Clear birds show in the same section. There are no class breakdowns for the different varieties within these sections.
My Chief Steward, Gavin Carter, won the day with a Spangle Sky Cock. Gavin also had Best Young with a Dominant Pied Sky and Best Young Opposite Sex with a Cinnamon Green hen. My friends Ghalib and Janice Al-Nasser had Best Any Age Opposite Sex in show with a very nice Lutino hen.
After the show, I rode home with Janice. Ghalib would follow later. I became acquainted with Fern, a chocolate Lab, Kizzy the cat, and Bernard, the step dog that Ghalib and Janice look after on a regular basis. Janice fixed an incredible lasagna dinner for us, and after our meal, I hit the sack, dreaming of the eight days I would have in England before returning home.

I am not a big fan of medicating my sick birds. Normally I just separate them and let nature run its course. I am more concerned with flock health than keeping an individual alive.
I do however treat twice a year for parasites. I use Ronidizole 40 for pigeons to treat canker (Hexamitiasis). You can get this from online pigeon supply stores. I treat 10 days in a row in the water, but change the water daily with the same dose recommended for pigeons. I make sure this is done a month before putting up to breed, and do not treat at the same time as anything else.
Secondly, I treat with Ivermectin twice yearly (also, not while breeding) for mites and scale. When I started out, I was instructed to put a drop orally in each bird with a syringe. I once bought a very nice hen at a National show, but notice she had scale around her beak and feet, so I got out the syringe and attempted to give her the single drop dose. Birds being birds, she panicked and ended up with several drops instead. She died a few days later. I have since learned that Ivermec can be absorbed through the skin. Some breeders put a drop or two on the neck of each bird, others put a drop on the bottom of each foot. Either method is safer and easier than an oral dose! Ivermectin is readily available online or at better feed stores. I keep this refrigerated and a small bottle lasts a few years. I do not treat with both Ivermectin and Ronidizole at the same time.
I am not a veterinarian and do not claim advanced knowledge, so check with other breeders if you have doubts. Good luck and happy healthy budgie breeding!

A motion to accept the revised Minutes of the 2015 Grand National was approved.
Marsha Conley presented the Treasurers Report.
Standing committee reports were presented on: Advancement, Affiliations, Bands, Membership, Member Retention, Patronage, Ranking, and Registration.
Old Business:
A motion to strike section 5.02 from the Bylaws passed.
The motion to remove the sentence in Bylaw 13.02 stating that purchased birds cannot be exhibited in standard BAA classes passed.
The motion to delete section 2.05 from the Bylaws passed.
A motion to add to Bylaw section 4.04 that the Chairman may be an ex-officio member of all boards and committees passed.
A motion to add Journal Editor to the Board of Directors passed. Journal Editor will be in charge of Journal content and production. (Update in 4.02)
A motion to add Webmaster to the Board of Directors passed. Webmaster will be in charge maintenance and content of the BAA website. (Update in 4.02
A motion to remove the registration information from the bylaws passed.
New Business:
A motion to elect Greg Arena as Membership Secretary passed.
A motion to elect Jim Fleeker as Recording Secretary passed.
A motion to purchase 25 copies of the BS Color standard passed. They will be sold at the next dollar up. This will be handled by the patronage secretary.
A motion to purchase the BAA lapel pens from Al for $280.00 passed. Maureen will handle the sales at $3.00 per pin.
A motion to go to at a two tier membership passed. $15.00 per member for an e membership and $25.00 for a domestic printed membership. Booster prices remain the same.
A motion to give a red, white, and blue colored ribbon with a medallion to any BAA judge who judges a foreign show to present to the host club passed.
A motion to allow Champion breeders who have attended at least ten shows over a three year period without placing a bird on the top bench and receiving at least 10 CCs to go back to Intermediate failed.
The Eastern Pennsylvania club asked to host the 2017 Grand National on September 22-23 2017. The club was granted the Grand National.
The motion that BAA purchase the required equipment, for up to $500.00, for successful conference call capabilities for future Board and Judges meetings passed.

Judge Administrator Bob Wilson called the 2016 Meeting of the Judge’s Association to order at 9:00 AM Friday, October 21, 2016 in Houston, Texas. * Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.* A motion to change the final testing procedure to eliminate birds first being placed by test administrators passed. The trainee will place birds in order and explain their reasons.* A motion that in order for a judge to remain on the active list they must exhibit in at least one publicized show in a two year period passed.* A motion that the judge administrator will annually mail and require an active status report for judges who wish to remain on the judge’s panel, and who wish to remain active members of the WBO passed.* Alan Horton was unanimously accepted as a judge trainee.* The minutes were approved as read.* The meeting adjourned at 10:32 am.
