Budding Entrepreneurs Learn From ExpertsThe Entrepreneurship Seminar this year featured four entrepreneurs and small business owners representing a broad spectrum of products and services, including: Andy Paul of Andy’s Candy Apothecary, Ron Robinson of

Black Belt in Fitness and co-founder of several non-profit organizations, Valerie Mamone-Werder of Downtown Sacramento Partnership and formerly owner of a women’s boutique clothing line, and David Nguyen of Limitless Blue Skies Security Co. David, in particular was a draw for students because he is a CRC alumnus, having taken the MKT 300 and BUS 215 courses from Professor Man Phan. While his security business is focused in the City of Stockton, he recently won a contract with the U.S. State Department which took him to Peru for two weeks to provide security services for the U.S. Embassy.

The approximately 100 students in attendance at the May 2 event, including two dozen students

from Valley High School, gained first-hand knowledge from the entrepreneurs on what it takes to become an entrepreneur and how to successfully manage a small business. The Entrepreneurship Seminar is an annual educational event organized by the Business Department with the intent to water and nurture the seeds of entrepreneurship in our students at CRC.

Many enjoyed the magical sounds of pre-Hispanic music by master artists from Yucatan, Mexico last week. The musical group Tribu creates music as a tribute to the rich Mexican heritage using authentic Mayan instruments reconstructed by hand. Through music, Tribu gives their audience an introduction to the basic narrative structure of Mesoamerica ritual.

Agustin Pimentel, an accomplished archaeomusicologist and the leader of Tribu, has devoted more than 35 years to research and promoting Mexican traditions. A big thank you to the Cultural Competence & Equity Committee who sponsored this event.

Food Fest Brings Out Fun TimesThe Associated Students of CRC sponsored the first ever Food Fest last Tuesday. There was music, food trucks, lawn games and a blow up slide.

The Student Ambassador Program and Club and Events Board sponsored the event

as a way for students (and staff) to enjoy some time relaxing and having fun.

Food trucks lined a walkway during the Outdoor Food Fest

SME Administrative Assistant Julie Elliott tries out the slide... apparently it’s harder than it looks... or maybe it’s just Julie.

Outdoor Food Fest (OF Fest)took place just outside the College Center and

included food and games

CVPA Hosts SpringFest to Draw Students to Programs

Alumnus Heading to Cannes for Film FestivalFormer RTVF student Alex Ajayi is heading to Cannes, France for the famous film festival. He was an RTVF 330 and 350 student who transferred to San Francisco State University in the Cinema program. He was an editor for a short student film called, “The Times” which won “Best Story” at the SFSU Campus Movie Fest (2015) which is now being sent on to the film festival at Cannes to play in the Short Festival Corner. Alex left for Cannes over the weekend and promises to send pictures. Good luck, Alex!

Thank you CRC family for your donations and/or joining Team CRC for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday.Team organizer and Administrative Asst. Tina Nguyen said “I am truly touched by the people who came

out in the rain and walked to support this special event.”

CVPA SpringFest ‘16 featured CRC music student performances, theatre arts “Arms and the Man,” art history student chalk art designs, Communication Studies’ Parliamentary Debate, EOPS/CARE/FYE/Cal Works information tables and a modern twist 10 minute Opera “Little Harlequinade” by Sac State Students. The week was full of a variety of opportunities for the campus to experience visual and performing arts through the perspective of CRC courses.

SpringFest attracted CRC students and community guests to outside of the classroom student centered activities that are part of CVPA course work. The event also included arts groups from the Sacramento Community to engender a broader context for visual and performing arts. Student led organization, Discover Sacramento engaged the campus in dialogue

conveying the importance of the arts. Discover

Sacramento’s desire is to bring creative minds together. The CRC Jazz Band featured The Fred Morgan Big Band, which has entertained Sacramento audiences for decades. Toes tapped to fan favorites, Route 66 and Take the “A” Train!

Congratulations to Health Information Technology student Marsha Devine who was awarded the California Health Information Association (CHIA) Student Scholarship. Marsha sent an email to HIT Professors Steve Kim and Starla Ledbetter saying “I am utterly thrilled and excited. I think once the amazement wears off, though, what will stick with me is gratitude. I’m so thankful for your direct help in your encouragement and the letters of recommendation. I’m especially thankful to you for the great education in health information management that made me competitive. This award is an endorsement of the quality program at CRC, and I’m just really proud to be representing our school. So we all won--you, me, and the other students at CRC.”

Political Science Department Hosts ColloquiumThe Department of Political Science and Global Studies hosted its 3rd annual Colloquium on Wednesday, May 4th. The evening featured presentations by Prof. Morales’ Teaching Assistants Olivia Askins and Brittany Cox. Olivia’s topic was titled “Nationalism: Identity and Power Perceptions in the Global Arena” and explored the development of nationalism, its theoretical and conditional underpinnings and implications in the international system. Olivia’s research showed that states don’t need to be qualitatively strong to be perceived as such and used the US, North Korea, Ukraine and Egypt as case studies. Brittany Cox’s topic was on policy reform within a global NGO. MSF (aka Doctors Without Borders) commits doctors and support staff to conflict zones to provide aid to all injured parties regardless of side or ideology. The vow of silence imposed on MSF staff precludes them from speaking out against the atrocities they see and treat and, because of it, their work is limited. Removing the vow of silence would allow more attention to be brought to these conflicts and, presumably, minimize threats against MSF staff. This year’s Colloquium, filmed, sound and print edited by Mike Bittner and Jim Lovett, will be posted on the departmental website by month’s end.

The evening was an opportunity to announce new courses coming to the department’s offerings. Starting in 2018, the department will offer the following courses at the rate of one new course per year: “IR in Film,” ”Introduction to Political Sociology,” Great Power Relations,” ”War & Strategy in the 21st Century” and “Peace, Conflict and International Law.”

The evening’s highlight was announcing transfers. “This cohort was small given that it’s an in-between year and the fact that political science is under-enrolling nationally due to the low number of legal positions available for law school graduates – political science being the traditional feeder to law schools; but our students did so well. We’re so proud of them and know they’ll do well,” said Martin Morales. Transfers to UC Davis are Olivia Askins and Namveer Singh. Both will be studying International Relations. UC Berkeley transfers, all of whom will be specializing in IR as a track within political science, include Nicole Cameron, Giselle Garcia, Kaveh Toofan and Lupe Vizcarra. Shawn Feuerstein will be attending CSUS to study California Government. Mizeille Avina will attend UC San Diego to study public policy and IR. Bamine Boye is currently attending the School of International Service at the American University in Washington, DC (he was a mid-year transfer). Last, Brittany Cox, already admitted to UC Davis, is awaiting notification from Stanford University. She transfers as a biology major (pre-med) minoring in International Relations.
