In August, 2012, I was visiting the greenhouse of a relative

of my daughter-in-law. He had a large multi-level green-

house and in it grew many kinds of plants, including or-

chids. One of those orchids he had never bloomed, and he

had said he acquired it in 1974 as part of a collection he

purchased in Norristown Pa. The plant was a very strong

grower and he had divided it many times. He gave me one

of those divisions and said, “See what you can do with

this!” The plant, Vanda brunnea ‘Genette’ CCE/AOS, is

shown below when he had given it to me. It was potted in

a 10” garden pot with what looked like ProMix. I pulled it

out of the pot, and placed it in an eight inch basket.

Plant when It was given to me

Plant after repot into basket, Sept. 2012

The plant grew well over the next two years. I was giving

the plant full sun except for the hottest part of the day and

the plant responded well with no burning of leaves. There

was robust growth and nice fat roots. In 2014 we moved

to Huntingdon Valley, and I no longer had a greenhouse.

What to do?? All of my plants including this one were

moved into the basement and grown under lights during

the winter. Prior to bringing the plant inside I allowed it to

stay outside along with the cymbidiums to be chilled. I

figured if the original grower had not been able to bloom it

doing the normal things like more light, it was time to try

something else.

“See what you can do with this!” Continued from page 1 As September moved into October, I backed off on the

watering. The plant now only received what little rain

there was for those two months. Finally, I moved the

plant inside under lights in the basement and withheld

watering through November. In December, I started to

water again and at the end of the month, I started to see

spikes. The plant threw 8 spikes on the three growths.

Not bad for a first blooming. The plant continued to

winter in the basement under lights through the Spring of

2017. This past winter was the first in a greenhouse

since 2013.

The plant continued to grow and get stronger. In January 2017, there were 10 spikes on the plant and multiple kei-kis along the base of the plant. This year, the plant spiked a little later but there were a lot of them. There was a total of 21 spikes this year. The three main growths had 5, 6 and 5 spikes respectively. The remain-ing 5 spikes were on the keikis. Vanda brunnea ‘Genette’ was awarded a 92 point CCE on 21 February, 2018 at the Mid-Atlantic AOS Judging Center. The description: One hundred twenty flowers and 23 buds on 22 inflorescences pleasingly arranged on an 8 fan plant 106cm high and 84 cm wide with prolific roots grown in a 19 cm square teak basket; foliage evenly grown along the entire length of each fan in good condition; sepals and pedals cream, heavily overlaid bronze with rust barring; lips white circular side lobes, central isthmus olive green; prominent white column with light yellow anther cap; substance hard texture waxy.
