BUCKS COUNTY HOUSE & HOME JANUARY 201012

Margo Levin, Editor

TThe beginning of a new year givesmost of us the nudge we need tomake changes, and I bet there’s nota person among us who doesn’t havea firm resolution or two in mind onthe first of January. Whether it’s afleeting thought to learn somethingnew, fit in fitness, battle the bulge,or get your home, office or personalspace in order, the mindset isdefinitely there. And even if wedon’t follow through, we shouldcommend ourselves, at least, for thegenuine intention.

Our first issue of 2010 is packedwith lots of advice on turning someof those fleeting thoughts or firmresolutions into action. “Perfect 10:Tips to Get Your Home in Order”offers helpful hints, checklists andsuggestions for organizing andmaintaining a clutter-free home. Weeven help you find your O.Q.(Organizing Quotient)! By keepingthree main categories (Keep, Toss,Donate) in mind and payingattention to your current lifestyle,it’s quite simple to reorganize, declutter and rearrange. Free themind, lift the spirit! Truth be told: Aclutter-free home translates to aclutter-free mind. With a projectand a plan in place, you can startsmall (a kitchen ‘junk’ drawer or acloset, perhaps?), so it’s notoverwhelming. There are manyconvenient and useful products, gadgets and storage systems on themarket today designed especially toget you on track. Make acommitment to tackle one area at atime. It works.

The next step? Gather your gangand head to the annual PhiladelphiaHome Show at the PennsylvaniaConvention Center, timed just rightfor seeking inspiration. You’ll findthe latest trends in decorating, renovating and landscaping. Whatbetter place to Bring Fresh IdeasHome as this year’s theme promises? With over 500 exhibitors in one

space (and lots to do for allmembers of the family), you’reguaranteed to come away in awe.View exciting new productsfirsthand, participate in scheduledseminars and meet and mingle withthe pros, including mastercarpenter/home renovator/designerPaul DiMeo from ExtremeMakeover: Home Edition. Don’t missour informative one-on-one withDiMeo contained within this issue.

If adding or updating a mediaroom happens to be one of your2010 pledges, you’re in luck as well.“Media Room Mania” answerseverything you’ve ever wanted toknow about media rooms. Learnwhat the experts have to say aboutcost considerations, location, installation, smart controls and the distinction between mediarooms and home theaters.Knowledge is power, and gatheringinformation like this will help you move forward.

As always, we invite you tobrowse this issue of HOUSE &HOME and keep it as a resourceguide though the year. Whetheryou’re considering a total kitchen orbath remodel, learning more aboutenergy-efficiency or looking forlandscaping or decorating tips,H&H remains a valuable reference.

Browse www.housemagazine.comto enter home makeover contests, locate local pros and find answers tocommon home improvementquestions. We’re here for you!Count on us for help all year long.

Best wishes for a prosperous2010!

TThe 21st century is the age of electronics. It’s virtually impossible tobe bored when endless entertainment options abound—fromcomputers, cell phones, iPods, cameras and gaming systems to highdef movies. In fact, there’s so much out there, it’s hard to be drawnaway. The perfect solution—and wave of the future—is the mediaroom, which puts all theses options in one place and simultaneouslydraws people together.

WHAT IS A MEDIA ROOM?“A media room is a designated area in the home that brings togetherall forms of home entertainment, including movies, gaming, photos, music and Internet,” explains Gregg Maina, owner of Elite HomeTheater.

Its components, which varyaccording to the owner’s needsand desires, generally include thefollowing, explains Dale Carlton, vice president of sales forAudiolab Stereo and VideoCenter: a video display, meaninga TV or projection system;multiple speakers, whichreproduce the surround sound; aDVD or Blu-ray disc player andan HD cable box; and to pull itall together, an audio/videoreceiver or surround processor, which is the brain of the system.

While anyone with a basicsurround sound system and a TVcan say they have a home theater,

more work goes into creating a media room, explains BrandonHoishik, president of Cinemaplex DBA Hoishik. “The design of theroom, carefully chosen electronics and décor elements will ensure amuch better entertainment experience.”

Mike DePaola, owner of The Home Theater Group, explains thata media room will include a home theater, but not all home theaters

are media rooms. “A room becomes a media room,” he says, “when it is no longer dedicated to the task of watching movies and television alone.”

ability to create separate sections is best. Rooms with easy access torun wires, either by having a basement below or attic above, areideal.” Some people choose a remote location, like a basement, sothat sound can be cranked up without causing a disruption in otherareas of the home. Others choose a central location, such as a familyroom or common area, so that the room will be used more and byall family members.

WHAT DECISIONS NEED TO BE MADE

BEFORE INSTALLATION?There are many factors to consider when designing a media room, including use, room dimension, sound and lighting. In regard touse, homeowners must decide if the area will be used for moviewatching alone, or other entertainment activities, such as poker orpool. If the latter, an open floor design with lots of space is key.

In regard to sound, “A general rule of thumb is to have a 50/50combination of hard and soft materials,” says Hoishik. Soft materialincludes carpet, chairs, draperies and acoustic panels mounted to thewalls and/or ceilings. “These materials will allow you to hearaccurate sound directly from your speakers as opposed to reflectedsounds bouncing around the room.” A room can be too soft,

Professionals can seamlesslyintegrate equipment into a

single remote control makingeverything easy to operate.

HOW DO I CREATE A MEDIA ROOM IN MY HOME?A properly designed and implemented media room requires asignificant amount of research and wealth of knowledge, explainsMike Dudzinski, CEO of Audio Café, Inc. There are so manydecisions to make: soundproofing, the look you want, the functionsyou desire from the system and overall system performance, that herecommends contacting a CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design &Installation Association) professional. “It’s a significant investmentand you want it done right,” he says. The organization’s website(www.cedia.org) will link you to a certified contractor in your area.

Today’s electronic equipment offers so much capability it can becomplicated if not set up by a trained technician, adds DavidLevitan, Audiolab’s owner. “To maximize your investment, youshould have the technical expertise of a professional when puttingyour system together.” Additionally, professionals can seamlesslyintegrate equipment into a single remote control making it easy tooperate.

Hoishik recommends getting referrals from friends who have had media rooms installed and doing as much research aspossible from books, magazines and online content to determinewhat you want.

After consulting professionals, DePaola suggests working withthem to create a floor plan, selecting products that are within a setbudget and determining a project schedule and timeline. “Constantcommunication with each party involved is the key to success,” he says.

WHERE SHOULD A MEDIA ROOM BE LOCATED?“With proper help and guidance, any room can become a greatmedia room,” says DePaola. “Generally, a larger room with the

however, which results in a sound often described as ‘dead,’ he explains.

Tile, hardwood and glass generally do not work well in mediarooms. “If the room has too much echo, sound quality will be poorregardless of the quality of the equipment,” says DePaola.

Controlling the lighting in a room, both natural and artificial, isalso essential. “Automated or manual window treatments can greatlyincrease the usability and pleasure of a room,” says DePaola. He addsthat dark colors often work better, especially in rooms with projectionscreens. An effective way to control lighting is through use of smart controls.

WHAT ARE SMART

CONTROLS?Smart controls refer to

a quality control system that integrates all aspects of a media room, explains DePaola. This can consist of a touch panel system or asimple handheld remote. “In order for your family to have fun usinga theater, it must be easy and reliable so that anyone can operate it,”says Hoishik. Smart controls not only operate A/V equipment, butalso lighting, motorized shades, fireplaces and virtually anythingelectronic with two-way feedback, explains Maina. Many of thesedevices can even be controlled automatically based on time of day, motion detection and other factors.

HOW MUCH DOES A MEDIA ROOM COST?Budgets can vary greatly. The single largest investment is usually thedisplay or monitor. The level of performance from the speakers andthe quality of the picture also drive the budget, explains Dudzinski.

The price of equipment has come down and the quality has goneup, Carlton points out. “A quality media room can be created forless than in years past,” says Hoishik. He recommends spending onpicture quality, sound quality and a functional control system beforeaccessories and room decor.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?“A media room is a great place to bring the entire family togetherand provide entertainment at home without spending moneyoutside of the house,” says Maina. Many parents also enjoy the factthat children are entertained in their own home and that supervision

is easy to provide, adds Hoishik. A properly designed media system also allows flexibility. Creating

different zones within the home lets the kids play video games, whilethe adults listen to music or watch a movie in another area, addsCarlton. With a multipurpose room, like a media room, just aboutanything is possible. You can stream content from the Internet oreven share a picture slideshow from a family trip, he says.

More and more families are choosing to invest in their homes, adds Dudzinski. “A media room can increase a home’s value, or atleast make it sell faster.”

Above all, a media room is simply fun. Not only is it fun todesign, but it also puts all of the fun activities for everyone into one place! H&H

spotlight on wall treatments

WWallpaper used to be considered a boring and old-fashioned wayto decorate your home. But not anymore! Wallpaper is comingback in a big way, and it doesn’t take long to get the hang ofhanging it by using removable wallpaper—the biggest innovationby far. Not only does this type of paper reduce the potential formoisture and mildew because it is breathable, but it’s easy to fix ifyou don’t hang it straight the first time. Manufacturers claim an8-foot by 10-foot room can be completed in 15 minutes.

One of the trendiest ways to use wallpaper is as a feature wall. You might not want an entire room decorated with a vividdesign, but a feature wall could be outstanding. Use metallicwallpaper to accentuate a room’s features. Imagine copperwallpaper around a fireplace, gold in a boudoir or silver in adining room. The possibilities are endless.

MURALS—A UNIQUE WORK OF ART

Murals have long been popular in children’s rooms, where scenesfrom fairy tales and jungles add whimsy to the décor. Now,they’ve become more popular in other rooms as well.Homeowners are turning to muralists to create art that mimics a frescoed ceiling, complex arabesque design or a wall-size landscape.

There are plenty of unique effects that can be created whenpainting an interior wall by rag rolling, sponging, marbling andusing a Venetian plaster technique. Faux finishes offer an illusionof depth and texture, resulting in stunning applications that canproduce a variety of intricate patterns and textures. practical pantries

functional,user-friendly

pantries keep everything at hand

IIf you have to grab a ladder or lie on your stomach to figure outwhat’s in your pantry, your pantry design is an inefficient use ofspace.

A typical tract home has a 24-inch-deep pantry with 12-inchfixed shelving spaced about 1 foot apart. Things placed in theback of these shelves get lost. Radically changing the pantry’s fea-tures and functions and maximizing the use of the wall space notonly lets the cook see everything at a glance, but can double, eventriple, accessible storage space.

A storage system should suit the cooking and shopping style ofthe homeowner. A dream pantry could be described as an 8-foot-long bowling alley with 16-inch shelves on both sides and anample walking aisle. Make room for an open space of 18 to 24inches at the bottom. It’s perfect for bulk storage of items, likepaper towels and water.

Organizational accessories would include a combination ofadjustable shelves, baskets and roll-out trays. A mop and broomrack, a tilt-out basket for wrapping paper storage, a Lucite® winerack and built-in file cabinet for recipes constitute more pragmaticadditions. A deep pie-shaped corner shelf offers a great place tostore kitchen appliances, mixing bowls or large things you don’t

use very often.A good space planner can redesign space for a pantry so you

use it in the most efficient way. Pantries can be fitted under stair-wells or a slanted ceiling. New butler’s pantries feature verticaldividers for serving trays, rods for hanging ironed linens and silvercloth-lined shelves or drawers that are perfect for someone whoentertains regularly.

FINDING FOOD FAST

It’s not really about how much you can put in your pantry, it’sabout being able to see it.

Are you more interested in style than function for yourkitchen? Some people are willing to give up some function inexchange for decorative moldings, detailed trim or cabinets thatlook like pieces of furniture.

There are three basic kinds of pantries:• The chef ’s pantry offered by many manufacturers is still verypopular. This hard-working cabinet consists of interior swing-outracks, door shelves and recessed shelves, a super-efficient storagedesign that holds a month’s worth of groceries. A pull-out pantryis an innovative series of adjustable baskets for smaller spacesaccessible from the side. • Roll-out shelves or drawers up to 36 inches wide present a sec-ond suitable option for advantageous kitchen storage. Roll-outshelves or trays can get overloaded. Make sure they are attachedwith metal, not plastic braces, and properly supported drawerguides are also important.• Door racks and adjustable shelves are a more cost-effective thirdalternative for families storing many bulk items.

PERSONALIZED PANTRIES

Closet and pantry specialists can offer you food storage space withmany convenience features that a traditional builder isn’t going tospend money on. Look for a variety of storage options that can beincorporated into a tall pantry and/or your wall and base cabinets.

Left: Improve your pantry in short order with an elfa system from The Container Store.

basket. Lockwood uses a 1-runner basket, 3¼ inches deep, foringredients, such as spices and baking soda, and her contractorinstalled these using 1 by 2 boards for extra support.

“I actually gave up some food storage for the counter space, butit all worked out,” says Lockwood, describing the choices shemade. “The bottom level of all my new cabinets has a 3-runnerbasket for storing mayonnaise, ketchup or Worcestershire sauce.Large baking goods, like flour and sugar and bread mixes, sit in a10-inch-deep drawer just below my new countertop workspace.”Bottom line: Lockwood’s pantry space has simply been redistrib-uted around the kitchen.

“I just finished putting up 10 bottles of pickles and relish. Mynext big project is to cook lunch for 27 of my co-workers,” saysLockwood, bubbling over with enthusiasm. “With the sliding bas-kets, I don’t have to pull everything out to get to items located inthe back. The cooking ingredients are much more accessible.”

ESSENTIAL EXTRAS

If you have the space, choose a walk-in pantry. And don’t forgetpantry basics. Lighting is a very important component. A 4-footfluorescent door-jamb light works well in the pantry. Install aminimum of two plugs for a portable vacuum cleaner, a recharge-able flashlight or even small kitchen appliances. A footstool thatslides under the bottom shelf is another useful pantry conven-ience.

Always put a rack on the back of the door for spices or canned

Always put a rack on theback of the door for spices or

canned goods, a notoriousspot for unused dead space.

A walk-in pantry takes up a lot of space, and many kitchens don'thave the extra room.

Homeowner Francie Lockwood did not have the extra roomfor a walk-in pantry when she recently renovated her 1978-erakitchen. “I’m an Emeril LaGasse wannabe,” she says. “I love tocook and when I cook, I cook big. My son looked in my pantryonce and said, ‘Mom, it looks like you are running a restaurant in here.’”

Storage in Lockwood’s kitchen has evolved over time. Severalyears ago, Lockwood and her husband redesigned their pantry, thecommonplace ineffective closet with 12-inch shelves across theback. They removed the existing shelves and installed new onesthat were 8 inches deep and closer together. “This allowed me towrap the shelves around every wall of the closet,” says Lockwood.“We made the shelves deeper at the top for my baking goods.”This simple change doubled her pantry’s storage space.

For the kitchen renovation, Lockwood enlisted the help of alicensed interior designer. Lockwood decided to eliminate herpantry closet to obtain more countertop space, the most impor-tant goal in this renovation. Then she placed efficient and handystorage features throughout the kitchen, allowing her to pursueher culinary passion with renewed vigor.

A floor-to-ceiling 12-inch-wide cabinet and a refrigerator wereplaced in the space of the original pantry closet. “I selected anelfa® sliding basket system from The Container Store for the 12-inch pantry cabinet,” says Lockwood. “The versatility of this sys-tem gives me the option to rearrange the storage anytime. Gliding

rails are placed every4 inches and I chosenine baskets with dif-ferent depths basedon what I wanted tostore.” The elfa sys-tem utilizes a runnersystem that is num-ber coded 1, 2 or 3to correspond withthe depth of the

goods, a notorious spotfor unused dead space.Pegboards for hangingspoons and large servingutensils that don’t fit inthe drawers, and veg-etable bins for storingpotatoes and onions, aremore smart options. Atailor-made pantry takesadvantage of all thenooks and crannies. Thenumber one considera-tion is convenience.

Convenience and easeof access are the practicalkeys to planning a pantrythat fits the cook’s per-sonal needs. Whether thechoice is a walk-inpantry with simpleadjustable shelves, a cabi-

net with roll-out trays or an innovative chef ’s pantry, the beautyand practicality of a custom-crafted pantry can only save time and make life in the kitchen simpler. Who could ask for anything more? H&H

RReplacing windows and doors might not be the most excitinghome renovation, but it’s definitely one that has a lot of importantbenefits, especially now that the government is offering federal taxcredits for energy efficiency.

When looking to replace windows and doors, homeownersshould consider a variety of factors besides price, says RichAneskewich, job site contractor/sales, C.A. Niece Lumber Co., Inc.

“Most window companies offer a low-maintenance exterior, such as aluminum clad, fiberglass or vinyl, which does not needpainting and in many cases offers the look of real wood,” he pointsout. “There are still window companies that also offer windowsand doors in wood exteriors that can be painted to match anexterior paint scheme while also matching the look of olderhistorical windows and doors.”

Chapman Windows and Doors is one company that offershigh-quality wood windows. Owner Mark Chapman says that

these are still in demand—especially for windows with historicalvalue or for situations where the homeowner doesn’t want tochange the home’s appearance.

“Many people today want to get windows that replicate the lookof their existing windows,” he says. “These can be painted orstained to match existing décor.”

So how do you know when it’s time to replace the windows? There are some obvious signs that windows are not working as wellas they should be, including noticeable drafts or fogging in-between the panes of glass. The appearance of your windows mightalso be a sign that it’s time for replacements.

Over time you may start to notice wear and tear, such aschipping or deterioration. And the performance of the window isalso a clue, adds Stephen Volpe, sales/systems coordinator, VolpeEnterprises, Inc.

“If your windows don’t open or close correctly, or you haveother issues operating them, then there’s a good chance you maywant to consider replacements,” he advises.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Homeowners today are looking for efficient windows that canshave some of the cost off their energy bill.

“Most of our properly equipped replacement windows can saveup to 30 percent off the homeowner’s current energy bill, so, intime, the windows pay for themselves in heating and cooling costsavings,” notes Chapman. “Homeowners appreciate low-maintenance windows that have high efficiency so they canmaximize their return on investment.”

Chapman says that the company’s vinyl and fiberglass cellularcomposite windows fit that bill. They are low in maintenance but still energy efficient; plus, they come with lifetime transferable warranties.

dazzling designsIf you’re looking for something a little different thansome of the standard windows and doors that are onthe market, then you might consider customized glassdesigns. Artistic Glass & Doors has done major projectsat locations, such as the Tropicana and the Borgata inAtlantic City, but the company also does a lot ofresidential work. While Artistic Glass & Doors also offersdoors with the decorative glass already in place, youdon’t have to get a brand new door to havedecorative glass—it can be added to an existing dooras well. Decorative glass can also make for aninteresting window in any area of the home.

Instead of traditional stained glass, which canrequire a lot of maintenance and become easilydamaged, the company does stained glass overlay. This method uses a single piece of glass that isdesigned to look exactly like stained glass, but withoutthe maintenance issues.

“We have a lot of options when it comes toartwork, color and diversity,” says Mike Baron, manager. “Basically any kind of design that can beimagined, or that you can find a picture of, can be

created on glass. And you don’thave to do color. We also dobeveled and etched glass.”

For front doors, Artistic Glass &Doors suggests thathomeowners think of this spacemore in terms of anentranceway than just a door.

There are many ways toenhance this space, including avariety of elements thatcomplement the door:Sidelights are tall, narrowwindows on the sides of thefront door, which can make itappear wider while also addingsome aesthetic appeal. A transom is a window abovethe door, which allows a lot ofextra light into the front foyerarea.

Utilizing decorative glass on afront entryway or in any of yourwindows not only enhances theexterior of your home, but alsoadds to the interior. Light comesthrough the decorative glass ininteresting patterns and cancreate beautiful prisms on thefloor, wall and ceilings. It’scertainly a unique way to addsome character and charm.

When you’re talking aboutenergy efficiency, the hottopic right now is the tax

credits that are available.

Of course, when you’re talking about energy efficiency, the hottopic right now is the tax credits that are available. “That’s beenone of the first questions that our customers ask,” says Walt Jones, owner of the Paoli location of SpringHouse Window & Door.“There’s up to $1,500 in tax credits available, so we make surehomeowners have all the answers they need.”

In order to qualify for the tax credit for windows, doors andskylights, these products must have a U factor of less than 0.30and the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) must also be less than0.30. If all of that sounds foreign to you, don’t worry. A windowand door professional can make sure you’re getting products thatwill qualify. It’s certainly worth it. For qualifying windows anddoors, homeowners will receive up to 30 percent of the cost back,up to a total of $1,500.

“Many of the products already qualify, but if one doesn’t meet those requirements from the start, you often just have toupgrade the glass,” says Jones. “That may only add a couple ofdollars and the benefits and available credit vastly outweigh thatsmall up-charge.”

It’s important to know that the government is planning to onlyoffer these credits through 2010, and the credits are only availablefor existing homes. It’s a good reason to consider upgrading yourwindows and doors in the near future. While many homeownersthink they have to wait until the spring to have windows replaced,Jones says that’s a common misconception.

“Because we only work on one window at a time, and you won’tbe losing too much heat, you can have your windows replacedduring the winter,” he says. “And if you have them done now,

you’ll be able to take advantage of some of the energy savings whileit’s still cold out.”

And no matter what products you select, remember it’simportant to work with a company that’s qualified to replace thewindows, so that the job is done right.

“One of the biggest points to make is that it doesn’t matter howgood the energy efficiency of a window is if it’s not installedproperly,” adds Volpe.

DOORS ARE IMPORTANT, TOO

While homeowners tend to think more about windows when it comes to saving energy, doors are important, too. Like windows, there are some obvious signs that it’s time to replace a door. One of the elements of the door that can eventually needreplacing is the weatherstripping, which is the seal around thedoor, says Volpe.

“Once that goes bad, air can leak in,” he continues. “If you cansee light through the door or if you notice any crumbling of thestripping, those are two key signs that it needs replacing.”

Another common problem with older doors, Volpe says, isrotting at the frames. “This usually happens on the bottom of thedoor,” he explains. “But the new doors that we install use acomposite frame, so they will never rot. They can’t wick up water. So once we install the door, the homeowner won’t have to replaceit again.”

Most contractors recommend a fiberglass door, which is moreenergy efficient than a wood door.

“I definitely suggest looking at fiberglass doors which requireless maintenance, but still give the detailed appearance that wooddoors have,” says Chapman. “They can be painted or stained, andcan look just like wood.”

Aneskewich agrees that fiberglass doors are a wise investment. They don’t dent or rust like steel doors and hold up better toweather conditions than wood doors do. When it comes toreplacing a door, Aneskewich says that the most important thingto consider is how much exposure that door will get.

“Many homes built in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and today do not take into account the amount of sun, rain and wind that

will hit the door,” heexplains. “If you arethinking about installing awood door, make sure youhave plenty of protectionfrom the elements, such asdeep overhangs—6-feet orgreater, if possible.”

Of course if you’rereplacing a door, you’llwant to consider aesthetics, too. “Doors can really dressup a home,” Chapmanstresses. When it comes tothe looks, finishing issomething to consider.

“We offer completecustomization of thefinishing and staining or painting of the door here in ourwarehouse,” he continues. “Customers can either order the doorwith a preselected finish from the factory, or we can customize andmatch the finish to any color they desire.”

This offers a great alternative for customers who want to createtheir own personal and unique look. Homeowners may alsoconsider screens, blind options in the door and a variety ofhardware choices that provide complete customization to reallymake the door their own. H&H

A Letter from Our Spokesperson, Ty Pennington

Welcome to the Philadelphia Home Show! If I wasn’t busy this week with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, I would absolutely bethere to experience the show with you. I'm thrilled that Paul DiMeo can be in my place to represent our EMHE family in Philly!

My work with Marketplace Events can be traced back to my days on Trading Spaces. From the first minute I walked through thedoors I was in heaven. I’m the kind of guy who can get lost at home shows full of new ideas and products, so to have something likethe Philadelphia Home Show available to you where you can get inspired in so many different areas of home and garden is awesome. Ihad a fantastic time attending shows last year in Denver, Orlando and Vancouver and look forward to attending more!

I encourage you to wander around with an open mind and take lots of pictures so you can go home and create idea boards. Mosteveryone here will have brochures or cards you can pick up so you can contact them when you’re ready to create a new look in yourown home. Around the show, you’ll see tips from me, ranging from ways to save money to design ideas that make sense and look great. You'll also find lots of easy DIY projects to improve your home, and there’s even a Ty Pennington Scavenger Hunt at the show leadingyou to a variety of products from my collection.

Look, if you’re here, that means that, like me, you are passionate about home design and that means you’re about to enter your ownpersonal utopia. Every aspect of home improvement and design is represented here, so get going and find those experts, ask questions, take notes, and most of all, have fun. You’re going to be overwhelmed by all the new products, design trends and cool ideas you’ll findhere.

Just remember my motto, “Good design can change your life,” and if you look closely, it can all start right here. Have a great time at the Philadelphia Home Show.

Ty Pennington

P.S. Remember to enter to win a chance to help me with a special project on the show. Go to www.phillyhomeshow.com to enter.

renovated five years ago, then you better get the name of thatcontractor!”

DiMeo continues: “If a homeowner is ready to spend X amountof money on a renovation, he or she needs to pay attention to whatthe contractor is saying.” It’s imperative that customer servicecomes across as a top priority and that a connection and confidenceis felt by both parties. DiMeo elaborates: “Paying attention tosimple courtesies, such as ‘Yes, Ma’am, No Ma’am’, is as importantas questioning potential workmen about the company’s workhabits.” (Will cleanup be done at the end of every day? Trash behauled away each night or at the end of the job’s completion?)

“Homeowers tend to choose the contractor who not only leavesthem with a clean toilet, but also with a cleaned-up area around thetoilet,” he adds, and then lists three important criteria in theselection process that must work for both the contractor andhomeowner: cost, quality and time.

“If there’s a situation where homeowners are in a rush to get abathroom remodeled quickly for impending house guests, forexample, these owners might choose to sacrifice quality somewhat,”he says. Both parties should be on the same page with a plan anddesign in place, as each one of these factors affects the other.DiMeo stresses that sticking with the original plan is imperative, and deviating from it (changing the placement of a sink, forinstance) not only ends up being very costly but also adds to thetime allotted to complete the job.

When asked for another inside secret garnered from his manyyears in the industry, DiMeo was willing to share one more: Hire aretired carpenter! This skilled lifetime pro has probably seen, sanded, resurfaced, built, repaired and experienced everythingunder the kitchen sink. No pun intended.

LET THE WORK BEGIN“When it comes to beginning the renovation, make surecontractors get all supplies beforehand so that time is neverwasted,” DiMeo advises. How do you think a home gets rebuiltfrom the ground up in only seven days? Sticking with the plan, ofcourse!

Most importantly, DiMeo says to make sure the contractor youhire will be around after the job is completed. He emphasizes: “Itshould go without saying that any contractor you hire guaranteeshis work.”

ON BUILDING GREENBuilding ‘green’ is very important to DiMeo who has jumped onthe ‘green’ bandwagon for the home-building industry. Even

with Paul DiMeo

One-One

on-

HHOUSE & HOME gets up close and personal with mastercarpenter, designer, home renovator, actor, jack of all trades andskilled craftsman Paul DiMeo from the hit reality TV show,Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

DiMeo will be in town on January 16 at the Philadelphia HomeShow at the Pennsylvania Convention Center where he will offerinformative and educational seminars, focusing on how people canspend less and cut down on utility bills, whether they have $100 or$100,000 to spend.

We’ll all vie for seats, of course, but I had the privilege ofinterviewing DiMeo personally, and I wanted to pick his brain forsome inside trade secrets to pass on to HOUSE & HOME readers. So, here is what I learned from Paul for all of you....

TRADE SECRETS: CHOOSING A CONTRACTORWhen asked what tips he could offer H&H readers and

homeowners who are about to hire a contractor/carpenter for ahome project and what the criteria for selection should be, DiMeodidn’t hesitate, not even a little.

“When choosing a contractor, homeowners can get directly tothe right contractor for a remodel or addition by simply talking tofolks—friends, neighbors, coworkers or family members—whohave used contractors successfully,” DiMeo says, and cites thefollowing example. “If you’re visiting friends admiring andcommenting on what you think is their new kitchen, and then findout [surprisingly] that the kitchen you are standing in was actually

though the cost “may be a little more expensive initially, building‘green’ definitely pays in the long-run,” and DiMeo urgeshomeowners to think in terms of the “long haul.”

He’s a big proponent of involving the community in projectsand suggests that it’s the “power of the people” that gets the jobdone. This is evident in the fact that no matter which city theExtreme Makeover: Home Edition bus rolls into, there is never a lackof volunteers to help a family in need.

ON BUYING TOOLSAsked to share his preferred brand of tools, DiMeo answers“Festool.” Manufactured by a German company, these tools workwell together, are low-maintenance and offer an extremely goodcut. That’s important when framing a home against a ticking clock.

DiMeo’s advice on buying tools: “I would spend $30 on a spadethat will last me the rest of my life, rather than $8.99 for a four-in-one spade that may be more versatile initially but won’t last.”

BEHIND THE SCENES AT EXTREME MAKEOVERIt has to be difficult to complete work on a home in one week, balancing quality craftmanship with speed. DiMeo can’t say enoughabout the tremendous turnout of community volunteers andexplains that various teams work together to fine-tune details thatsimply get the job done.

“No,” things do not always go smoothly, especially when a houseis demolished and must be entirely rebuilt in a week.

“Yes,” materials are often hard to locate; and, “yes,” there weretimes when the cameras were rolling, the homeowners werewalking up the driveway and the grout was being finished in thebathroom—just seconds before the workman squeezed out thewindow!

And, “yes,” (again), it’s always worth it!

ON DESIGN AND DECORATINGKnown for creating imaginative children’s bedrooms on the show,DiMeo recently designed a little girl’s room as a carousel withgenuine rocking horses, a favorite of the child’s.

“There’s so many things you can do with kids’ rooms simply andinexpensively to make it uniquely theirs. It can be as effortless astaking their favorite drawing or artwork, blowing it up and framingit to hang in a prominent place.”

FAVORITE TYPE OF CARPENTRY?DiMeo pauses for a moment with this question, and then states:“Framing. It’s the one area where you get satisfaction quickly, actually seeing the walls go up.”

Creating a kitchen table is a close second because of the tales itmight tell: how it got the cigarette burn from a teen who wasn’tsupposed to be smoking, how it bears the sad news of divorce, thehappy announcement of an engagement, or catches the tears of achild struggling with homework.

What a creative way to think of a kitchen table! My time was up with this genuinely sincere, just plain nice, easy

to talk to, extremely insightful, talented professional. Thanks, Paul!____________________________________________________Considering an Addition or Remodel?Visit our online resource directory at www.housemagazine.com to findcontractors and companies that offer professional, dependable service. the clutter-free garage

The Home Safety Council and GarageTek have come

up with a few tips to help you keep your garage safe

and organized.

• Create order in your garage by designating zones for

items stored in the garage. Then you will know where to

find items, and, even better, where to put them back.

Some zone suggestions: Lawn & Garden, Auto Care,

Household Supplies, Sporting Goods, Kids Corner and

Pet Needs.

• Hang shovels, rakes, lawn chairs, bikes and other

sharp objects securely from pegs on a side wall. Hang

the sharp edges toward the wall.

• Designate a specific area for children’s things. Don’t

store balls, toys or other objects of interest to children

near potentially dangerous areas.

• Provide a place for everything in your garage by

properly securing cabinets and shelves to the walls.

Instead of putting the heavy equipment up on higher

shelves and the light stuff down below, reverse it. It’s

actually easier and safer to get to what you want.

clean up the closet clutter, clear your mind!

Cleaning and organizing is no longer a ‘spring’ event. In order to maintain an organized home, it is essentialthat clutter is eliminated on a regular basis. Diggingthrough a messy closet is an unnecessary stress, andeveryone could really benefit from some simple closetorganization. A cluttered home reflects a clutteredmind, and organizing your living space will relieve someundue stress in your life.

Closets by Design offers these simple tips that everyconsumer can use to clean up messy closets andremove the stress from their lives:

• An Operating System Isn’t Just for the Office.Organize your clothes by color or by casual to formaland then hang like-types of clothing together, i.e., shirts, pants, skirts, etc.

• Make the Shoe Fit. Squeeze in more shoes per shelfby arranging pairs with one toe facing out, one toefacing in. If you like to keep your shoes in boxes, labelthe original box, use clear storage containers or put apicture of the shoes on the outside so you know whichbox to grab every time.

• When Seasons Change, It’s Time to Rearrange.Rotate your fall and winter clothes with your spring andsummer clothes, and use a guest room or rarelyaccessed area of your closet to store these items.Organization systems will allow for the rotation of sea-sonal items while still leaving your wardrobe the oppor-tunity to grow.

• If You Don’t Use It, Lose It. If you’re hanging ontothat pair of jeans that will fit only if you lose 10 pounds, donate them. Once you shed the weight, you can buya new, trendy pair. If an item has a small stain or tear,it's time to toss it. If you haven't worn it for an entire sea-son or own something similar, consider donating it tosomeone who will get more use out it. Cutting the clut-ter will automatically make you more organized andefficient.

• An Organized Closet Starts with You. Get into a routine of straightening up your closet the same timeeach day. Whether it’s before work, after work or

before you go tobed, don’t wait toput your shoesaway or hang yourclothes until youcan’t see yourcloset (or bed-room) floor.

3. Do you really need your storage unit? Sort through old boxesyou’ve had in storage and determine if the contents are worth keepingand why they’re important. What about that box that has moved withyou the last three times that you’ve never opened? If you clear outenough, you may not need a storage unit and the accompanyingmonthly fee.

4. Put an end to the junk drawer blues. Dump the contents ofyour messiest drawer. Dispose of useless, broken or outdated items.Design a mosaic of varying-sized containers or trays to hold the thingsyou still use. Determine to put and keep them there after each use.

5. Create and use a grocery item spreadsheet. Place it in your kitchen and have family members check off items that need to be pur-chased. This eliminates having to write out the items each time, andwhen you are ready to go shopping just grab your list and go.

6. To keep from getting buried with too much stuff, use theOne-In One-Out Rule. When you buy something, get rid of the oldversion. If you buy your child a new toy, then an older toy no longerbeing used has to go. This will help with storage issues, as well as clut-ter around your home.

7. Use unlikely sources of space. Think creatively with the space inyour home. Use the back of the bedroom door for a shoe rack or thespace under your bed to store minimally used items, like travel bags orextra blankets.

8. Store home manuals in a three-ring binder. Place each manualin a clear plastic sleeve. Section the manuals according to the room in your home where the item is used. When you dispose of the item, remove the manual from the binder.

9. Label everything. Shelves, containers (especially opaque ones) and drawers make it easy for anyone, even a visitor, to find and putaway items.

10. Create a password manual. Keep it by your desk as a great refer-ence for websites that you visit that require you to log in. H&H

fireplace surrounds on the interiors of the homes. “One of thethings we love to do is to bring stone into the interiors of homes, such as creating a stone wall in an entrance foyer. The interior ofthe home can be dramatically transformed as much as theexterior. I’ve had clients tell me, ‘I almost don’t recognize myown place. You’ve given me a brand new house.’”

Drive through any upscale community of homes in the areaand frequently you’ll see wonderful stonework on the front ofhouses, but then there is siding on the remaining three sides.“With our stone veneers,” Marin relates, “that same beautifulstonework can surround the house. There’s no longer a sense thatthe house is unfinished, and the look and value of the home aregreatly increased.” Marin’s company can also transformbasements, creating home theater rooms and wine cellars withstone facing for his clients.

CM Masonry works throughout Bucks and MontgomeryCounties, the Main Line and Philadelphia. The company also doesconsiderable work in the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos, and inNew York state. Marin and his crews tackle jobs throughout thestate of New Jersey, particularly the Greater Princeton area, Mercer,Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren Counties.

magnificent transformation

CCarlos Marin, president of CM Masonry, started out in stonemasonry and then moved on to landscaping to meet the demandsof customers. Increasingly, when he would landscape near theexteriors of clients’ homes, he and his crews would uncoverdamages to the outsides of their homes—damages covered up overthe years by bushes and shrubs. While some of the homes wereolder, some of the houses had just been built a few years before, and Marin simply couldn’t understand how the original buildersgot away with the sometimes careless workmanship.

Marin’s father had been a mason for many years, and helearned the trade at his father’s side. He offered his services as a

mason, and that soon took upthe majority of his business.Marin was determined to do itright, taking great pride in hiswork and the work of hisemployees. “We work on theexteriors and interiors ofhomes,” he explains. “We canbuild stone fronts and stuccoor brick exteriors that willtransform a home.” We alsoadd a sealer to protect fromharsh weather."

landscaping/hardscaping

IIt has been said that you never get a second chance to make a firstimpression. The front landscape of the home is the first to be seenbut is often granted the least amount of space and the smallestportion of the budget. Many homeowners are overwhelmed andover-spent when they move into a new place and end up dealingwith whatever landscaping was left by the builder or previousowner—even when it is overgrown, under-planned or non-existent.

This first impression suggests the style of the home and thepersonality of its residents. By increasing curb appeal, homeownersnot only beautify their home, but also increase its value. For the besteffect, first consider the architectural style of the home and chooseplants and hardscape materials that complement it. Working withdesign professionals, like those at Environmental LandscapeAssociates, is the best way to ensure a cohesive design.

The driveway is the point of entry for most properties. Thesurface material selected can set the theme. Asphalt is a typical choicebecause of its durability and low cost. Crushed gravel invokes acountry lane leading to a rural setting, while pavers are a dramaticway to suggest a home rich with detail.

A wall or pier at the driveway entrance can identify the property. This architectural feature should complement the materials of thehome. Posting the address on a sign or mailbox clearly defines thelocation. A specimen plant or other ornamental feature can also markthe entrance.

Just as the driveway leads visitors onto the property, walkwaysdirect them to the home. Many homes begin with a basic concrete

walkway installed by the builder, but a well-designed walkway canchange the effect. A long, curving walkway allows a tour of theproperty, while a linear one gives direct and immediate access.Depending on where most guests will be arriving, a walkway canconnect the front door to the street or driveway. A main walkwayshould be at least 3½ feet wide.

When deciding upon hardscape materials for your entrylandscape, consider durability, cost and the aesthetics of the material.Surfaces should be even to prevent tripping and simplifymaintenance. A masonry surface is easier to shovel or sweep and lesslikely to be tracked in the house than a gravel one. The pros andcons of each should be discussed with your landscape professional.

The front landscape should also coordinate with the architectureby enhancing prominent features of the home. Use plants to balancethe architecture of an asymmetrical home or echo the features of a

symmetrical one. Major pieces should be in proportion to thestructure. Preserve a clear view of the main entrance, as well as anyprimary windows. The landscape can be used to create a focal pointfor homes that lack one by featuring an ornamental plant or element.

Foundation plantings give most homes their immediate curb appeal. These plants visually anchor the house to the land. Reinforce the styleof the home with appropriate plants. The size and maintenance needsof the foundation plants are the most important consideration. Plantsthat look perfectly sized at the nursery can quickly outgrow the space ifnot properly researched. Look for plants that will hide eyesores andenhance the home’s attributes. Evergreen shrubs should be used toscreen the air conditioner and utilities from view.

Include evergreens against the foundation to create year-roundinterest. Use flowering shrubs and perennials in front for seasonalcolor. Creating multiple layers of height and texture is important infoundation plantings. To provide areas of interest, consider addingbeds in the front lawn, as well as larger shade trees and shrubs. Avoidencroaching on the walkway with aggressive plants that have thorns, attract bees or will leave a passerby soaked by wet overhanging foliage.

As a transitional space, the entrance has only a few moments tomake a lasting impression. Whether the visitor is the mail carrier oran honored guest, many things can be done to enhance theexperience and ensure that each impression is a favorable one. Followthese simple guidelines to beautify your home and truly make yourentry landscape one that you enjoy coming home to.

personal space

SSeveral years ago, artist Laura Lopez realized she was not properly nur-turing her artistic nature. At the time, she worked on her choreogra-phy in the garage, making do by laying down a few rugs and leaningmirrors against the wall.

Then she had an epiphany: “I really wanted to claim my artisticside. I realized that my creativity was important enough to reflect inthe outside world,” she says. So she converted her garage to a dancestudio with wooden floors and floor-to-ceiling mirrors.

From full studios to craft corners—and everything in-between—homeowners today are claiming their creative sides and their creativespaces in increasing numbers.

FINDING FOOTAGEJust about every home has some unused square footage that can beconverted into a creative space: a spare bedroom, a nook in thekitchen, the attic, the utility room, even a closet. It may require someingenuity; for instance, if you choose to redo a guest bedroom, consid-er putting in a wall bed. It doesn’t take up much space and when yourin-laws come to visit, they can still be accommodated.

As happened with Lopez, garages are likely candidates for extraspace for hobbies and pastimes. The 1980s focused on the kitchen, the

creation stationsfor kids

It is never too early to encourage creativ-

ity in youngsters. In artist Laura Lopez’s

studio, she set up an easel for her 2-year-

old daughter. “I put on music and we go

crazy—dancing around, painting, having

a good time,” she says.

For his 8-year-old son, David Linda built

a craft island, a project station that rests

on casters so that it can be pulled out or

pushed aside as needed. “My son often

has science projects that need working

on. This craft island makes it easy for us to

stand around it and work,” he says.

Customize the island to suit your needs.

For instance, make spaces for baskets if

you’re using fabric or install shallow draw-

ers if you’re working with tubes of paint.” 1990s emphasized the master bath, and about seven years ago, thespotlight was on the closet. Now garages are getting the attention.

People crave well-organized craft areas. They want space wherethey can work at a table and have storage space nearby. And morepeople are installing gift-wrapping stations in their homes.

APPROPRIATE FINISHESWhen creating a hobby craft area, you want to be sure to make it aplace where, if the glue or paint flies, nothing will get ruined.

When appropriate, use tiled floors, painted walls and laminatecabinetry—all finishes that can easily be wiped down. Build cabi-netry at a taller height, since much creative work is done sitting onstools or even standing. With the cabinetry, include lots of drawersand shelves. Pay attention to how the room feels. Things like finish-es, lighting and music are important.

THE ARTIST IN YOUSoon after she turned her garage into a dance studio, Lopez startedmeeting other dancers, which then led to her performing publicly.

“Once I put the intention out there, things started coming tome,” she says. “If you want to foster something within yourself, you’ve got to open up the space to make it happen.” H&H

Shutter ReNu has recently completed a deal with a major cable home shoppingchannel so that the product can be sold on television. One of the requirements wasthat there had to be an independent product examination of Shutter ReNu. Shuttersthat had their top portions unprotected and their lower portions treated withShutter ReNu were submitted for examination by a device called a colorimeter. Thestudy found that a significant percentage of color had been restored to the sectionsof the shutters treated with Shutter ReNu.

For this article, a beautiful home in Montgomery County was chosen for a test. Before and after photos were taken, and they are shown here. A well-respected con-tractor, Bob Waldron of Town & Country Painting in Audubon, PA (610-636-9017), was kind enough to apply Shutter ReNu to all of the shutters of the home. The work only took a morning to complete, and the success of the product is docu-mented in these photos.

Winget reports that the demand for Shutter ReNu is coming not only fromhomeowners, but also from contractors, powerwashers and painters as well. He has created a product that works excellently, is easy to apply and is environt-mentally friendly.

Shutter ReNu has also been independently tested on additional surfaces and hasresulted in the same dramatic improvement to color as that shown on shutters. These additional uses on items, such as patio furniture, exterior lighting fixtures, decorative pots, stone and brick, expand the product’s success, as well as the amountof items a homeowner can choose to spruce up. Winget adds that as a result of theseadditional uses, the company is exploring changing the name of the product toRenuAll and suggests that homeowners visit the company’s website to view a videoof the product’s many uses.

Visit Shutter ReNu’s website at www.shutterrenu.com for more information and to viewa video of the product’s many uses. H&H

RReplacing your home’s cracked and faded shuttershas always been a costly and time consuming taskuntil a young chemist came along. Richard Wingetwanted to use his education and training to create aproduct that millions of homeowners would wantand need. He looked at the shutters of his own homeand saw how harsh UV rays of the sun and weatherhad made them faded and cracked.

The proverbial light bulb went off in his head andWinget went into his lab and emerged with his newproduct, Shutter ReNu. This is a water-based clearprotective coating that restores and protects shutters.Winget explains that the fading of wood or vinylshutters is caused by their exposure to the sun andweather. This causes oxidation so that tiny cracks andholes appear on the surface of the shutter, and this causes a chalky or faded look.

Shutter ReNu is a low VOC (volatile organic compounds), environmentally-friendly surface restorer and protectant. It is easy to apply with a paint brush andcleans up easily. It only takes a morning to apply the product to all of the shutters atyour home. The product is not pigmented and dries clear so that any splatter willnot be noticeable. The only prep work after cleaning the shutters is simply to openthe Shutter ReNu container.

By using Shutter ReNu instead of replacing shutters, the homeowner should save,on average, over $400 and the time, effort and aggravation of taking down the oldshutters and putting on the new ones. Also, Shutter ReNu resists the growth ofmold, mildew and algae. The product prevents the harsh UV rays of the sun fromreaching the restored shutters, keeping them beautiful for years.

This shutter is partiallytreated with Shutter ReNuto give a true before andafter look.

AAs we face a restless world of economic uncertainty, we seepeople retreating to their nests seeking comfort, the goodcompany of family and friends, the warmth of a fire lithearth and the fragrance of home cooking. While we maybe cooking more at home, we prefer kitchens that workwell and look smashing.

We’re still willing to feather our nests, but we’re lookingfor good value and furnishings that will last longer thanthat lease on the rented Lexus. Ostentation is out andrestraint is in, but give us a few luxuries to keep our spiritsbright: A touch of chic wallpaper to brighten the boudoir, acrazy console by Tony Duquette to make us smile, a splashof color to lift our mood, and a cascade faucet that remindsus of that Italian spa we visited last year.

Here are a few of the trends we see that have the designworld buzzing.

Classic modern pure comfort isirresistible in any era. Thismeans French designer PierrePaulin’s pieces will never go outof style. For the very first time, the voluptuous pumpkin chairand ottoman he created for theapartments of Claude & GeorgePompidou at the Elysee Palace in1971 are being put into large-scale production for Ligne Roset.

ARTS AND CRAFTS WITH

A CURVE

No need to reminisceabout the glory days ofArts and Crafts style. Theturn-of-the-last-centurystyle is back, remixednow with smooth archi-tectural detailing. Thos.Moser has adapted thislegendary style in itsPasadena Living collec-tion. Curvilinear, with nosquare edges, sofas andchairs are relaxed andwell-suited to fit formal orcasual environments.

HOLLYWOOD ENCHANTMENT

The late designer Tony Duquetteknew how to cast an enchantedspell with the fanciful interiors, cos-tumes and jewelry he created forthe mid-20th-century Hollywoodcrowd he ran around with. A pro-tégé of Elsie de Wolfe, he alsodesigned awe-inspiring movie setsand museum installations. With BillyBaldwin, he practically inventedHollywood Regency style, which willalways be prized by those whoselove flourishes. Duquette reproduc-tions, including this biomorphicconsole table cast in resin and fin-ished in silver gilt, is also availablein gold leaf.

FOR THE FLOOR

Rugs that honor the colors and patterns of nature willprevail this year. Founded in 1982, DIURNE, thegallery creation of Paris-based artist MarcelZelmanovitch, returns to the United States after anabsence of 20-plus years to showcase beautiful con-temporary rugs for floors and walls at DavidSutherland showrooms. His painterly carpets arecharacterized by a wonderful harmony of balanceand design in breathtakingly beautiful colors drawnfrom nature.

The designers at Emma Gardner Design continue toimpress, most recently with their ethereal BambooBlossoms (left) in which the pattern creates a glimpsethrough a bamboo field where large flower blossomsdraw the eye. Quiet and elegant, it’s made of hand-knotted Chinese silk and Tibetan wool.

GREEN IS THE BUZZWORD

Green is the buzzword this year, andBenjamin Moore’s new Natura Zero-VOCinterior paint makes it easy to be environ-mentally responsible while, at the same time, color savvy: More than 3,400 hues areavailable in a range of sheens. Check outthe odorless C2 Lo-Vo C2 paints at DefinitiveDécor, too. The company uses a European16-pigment color system to create 496 com-plex colors plus thousands of additional col-ors. Being green has never been so colorful

GET GLAMOROUS

High drama with shimmer, glitter and opulence is everywhere—from wallcover-ings to fabrics to furniture. With the new Wild Flora wallcovering collection(left), Anna French for Thibaut makes patterns dance on foils. Glamorous, ele-gant and cosmopolitan, Drama Queen (below) is the latest luxurious groupingfrom John Hutton Textiles. Entirely handcrafted and handpainted, Ann Sack’sGallery tile uses a relief surface along with multicolored glazes for a stunningeffect. And Maya Romanoff’s Ajiro metallic wood veneers are coverings ofarresting beauty.

HAPPY ORLA KIELY

Sweet, neat and always original, Orla Kiely’sdesigns reminiscent of 1960s’ graphics areinstantly recognizable. This Dublin-born artistcreates a world where color, pattern, graphiccontrol and texture come together in a har-monious and happy way, evident in thesecherry mix-and-match dinner plates andkitchen towels.

ILLUMINATING LIGHTING

The passion for pendants is peak-ing. Eurofase’s Prima Luce collectionbrings us Palladiana, which cap-tures and holds the light betweentwo pieces of frosted, mosaic or pat-terned glass. And Studio Italia’s newLace is aptly named, with a hand-blown clear crystal diffuser and del-icate glass applications by Muranoartists.

KITCHENS WITH A VIEW

Gone are the dark, galley-like kitchens that remind you of your first budget apart-ment. Today’s homeowners want a kitchen with a view—at least a view of the fami-ly room—with lots of room for appliances that make cooking a happy task.Cabinetry goes below countertops, not above where it blocks the view.

FANTASTIC FAUCET

Kohler’s Karbon articulatingkitchen faucet continues toamaze. Engineered to hold anypose for hands-free operation,Karbon allows you to streamlineyour workflow in the kitchen. Youcan extend the faucet fully to filllarge pots, lower it into the sinkfor food preparation andcleanup, fold it compactly out ofthe way when not in use, or posi-tion it anywhere in-between.

LOFTY CREATIONS

Wood furniture so simply donethat it looks modern is always awarm touch in big, loftyspaces. Ethan Allen’s recentfascination with loft modern(We Love Loft Modern Serapecollection) is contagious, and shows down-to-earth canbe fabulous. Begin with slim sil-houettes, like this fanback arm-chair. Weave in natural texturesand outdoorsy colors, like thiswoven low bowl and tall band-ed vessel. Very earthy chic.

Thermador’s award-winning Freedom collection gives homeown-ers fresh food and freezer modules that act independently of eachother, releasing the kitchen space from having to be designedaround the traditional bulky refrigerator/freezer combo.

mopping made easy

Mopping tends to be one of the mosttedious household chores but the Best Home

Mop and Super System mops from MaryMoppins Cleaning Systems can make the task

much easier. These no-rinse mops feature aspecial design incorporating three strips of

Velcro-type hook fasteners, which attach ordi-nary terry towels instead of the old germ-filled

mop heads commonly used. The patentedmop design allows homeowners to usedifferent towels for different chores,

including dusting, applying oil to woodpaneling or floors, waxing, cleaning/drying cars,

and, of course, mopping. The 9-inch Mary Moppins Best HomeMop retails for $28.95 and the 14-inch Super System mop sells for$49.95. For more information on Mary Moppins full line of mops, visit www.goclean.com or call 800-345-3934.

packed with power

Just released in October, the new handheld vacuum from Dysonis getting a lot of attention. The DC31 model is powered by aDyson digital motor, DDM, which spins up to 104,000 rpm—five times faster than a Formula One race car engine. With allthat power, the DC31 picks up a lot more than you’d expect froma handheld. Like all Dyson vacuums, the DC31 uses the com-pany’s patented Root Cyclone technology, which separates dirt, fine dust and debris from the air so that it doesn’t lose suction. The vacuum retails for $219.99.
