Margo Levin, Editor

SSometimes I want it all. I want to kickand scream in a tantrum befitting agreedy two-year-old. More often than not,I just can’t help myself. When I see themost striking and remarkable remodels, renovations and redos that cross my deskwith the Boring Before and AstoundingAfter images, it’s concrete evidence thatmiraculous transformations are takingplace at this very moment in local nearbytowns. I can’t help being envious. Then Itake a deep breath, slouch back in mydesk chair...and settle.

Our Spring Home Makeover issue ispacked with a kaleidoscope of ideas tofreshen up your home—both indoors andout. Welcome...brighter skies, longer days, blossoming flowers, the scent of freshmulch and the pleasant noise of children’soutdoor play. Homes everywhere areshouting: I want something new!

Makeovers don’t have to be majoroverhauls (although in my case that wouldbe nice!), but planned in baby steps, they’re guaranteed to refresh, renew, revitalize. Ideas are everywhere—containedherein, of course, in books, catalogs andreality TV shows, but also found bymaking mental notes wherever youhappen to be. For example, visiting aneighbor’s home and eyeing how the lightaccents an unusual art piece, or runningan errand at a local big-box or retail storeand spotting a showstopping endcap oftrendy vases, can often inspire.

Modest do-it-yourself projects cost littleand give much back in the pride taken bya novice attempt. Adding modern twists toa tired and worn area, or making simpleadjustments to what you already have, works wonders.

Case in point: as a child of about six orseven, I vividly remember coming homefrom school one afternoon to walk into aliving room where the furniture had beentotally rearranged. I was startled beyondbelief! As if by magic, the pieces had justgotten up and rearranged themselves—with no previous warning, no plan ordiscussion, not a word about the secrettransformation that occurred one springafternoon between the time I went back toschool after lunch around 1 p.m. andreturned home again by 3:30 p.m. Chairswere out of alignment, the sofa had simplyvanished (or so I thought as I couldn’t findit initially), pictures were hung on the‘wrong’ walls, even the mantle wasdifferent, now displaying the oversizedEiffel Tower stolen from its place in

another room. Stripped of their tiebacks, the curtains flapped wildly on both sidesof the squeaky clean windows that usheredin fresh air, and polished dark wood tablesshined to support their crisp, white, starched crocheted doilies. Amazing...itwas a spring cleaning scene not to beforgotten. When I questioned it, my mucholder and college-wise sister replied: “Iwanted to shake things up a bit.” And shedid. The inspiration of that indeliblememory, even today, gets me going on aspring cleaning rampage.

In this issue, any one of our featuredtopics gives you helpful advice and a headstart on a more detailed project. Forexample, you’ll never go wrong in creatingan impressive and alluring entryway, abeauty of a bath, adding new hardwoodflooring or updating with sheet metal, which can be crafted into shelves, tables, fireplace surrounds, unusually shapedsinks, barbecue pits and summer kitchens. Our feature on decks and patios containsvaluable information for planning anddesigning this essential element of anyoutdoor space.

And more than ever before, with today’smodern technology and up-to-dateimprovements, outdoor furnishings, tables, lamps, rugs and decorative pieces are builtto wear and weather well, and treated towithstand all kinds of harsh elements.

Keep in mind that subtle changes—indoors and outdoors—can have a hugeimpact. Add new lighting; display potterythat goes unnoticed in one area (it can popin another); mix up the furniture to bringa dull room back to life. On the otherhand, if you have put the decision toremodel that kitchen or bath on hold, nowis the ideal time to begin. Manycompanies are offering tremendousdiscounts and prompt start and end times.

As always, HOUSE & HOME standsready to guide you along the way, withpages of qualified professionals at yourservice, eager to lend a hand and offeradvice to help “shake things up a bit” atyour house.

“Consistency is key,” he adds. “Without having thesame crew, project instructions can be misinterpreted. It is also an indication that the contractor may berunning more projects than he can handle.”

In addition, Litwin emphasizes the importance ofmaking sure your contractor is up front with thecosts involved. “Some contractors try to raise theprice after they’ve already collected money on theproject,” he says. “Agree on what would constituteadditional money. Otherwise the original, contractedprice should be sufficient.”

You should also agree on a payment schedule inadvance, he adds. “Homeowner payments shouldnever be ahead of a contractor’s work unless custommaterial is being ordered,” notes Litwin. “At leastone-third of the total contract amount should be dueonly upon satisfactory completion.”

GETTING STARTEDBefore having a coating project started, Litwin saysto consider the other exterior improvements you arecontemplating. “Roofs, for instance, should be com-pleted prior to coating a home,” he says. “Roofingmaterials can fly off during application and thatcould mar the coating.”

And while there’s no problem with replacing windows or doors after acoating, if you are planning on enlarging or downsizing the opening, thisshould be done in advance.

10 STEPS TO COMPLETIONAfter you’ve decided you want your home coated, take these 10 steps tocomplete the project, Litwin advises.

1. Inspection. Perform a complete inspection of your home’s exteriorin order to reveal surface deterioration, such as chipping, peeling, flakingor rotting. 2. Dig a trench. Build a trench around the home, when possible, toinhibit the capillary action of ground moisture. This step helps to elimi-nate costly repairs to the foundation in the long run.3. A deep clean. Pressure wash the entire house using cleansers andmildew inhibitors.4. Scrape and sand. Scrape and sand the home’s surface where appli-cable, to remove any old layers of paint.5. Repair and patch. Deteriorated areas of the home are preparedand patched using compounds that correct surface defects.6. Protect the area. Carefully cover surrounding doors, shrubs, win-dows and any other elements to ensure they are not coated.7. Primer application. Primer is sprayed on using compounds thatcorrect surface defects. This primer creates an armor-like surface that isweatherproof and flexible.8. Finish application. A special application process ensures even dis-tribution of color coating. Final Coat offers a wide variety of fade-resist-ant, heat-reflective colors which to choose from.9. Final inspection. Homeowners and the crew chief should walk theproperty to ensure the terms of the agreement have been met and thehomeowners are satisfied.10. Clean up. Remove any masking that was protecting the surround-ing area. The area should be cleaned of any debris and be left neat andclean.

home’s exterior

freshen up: a new product canpermanently change the look of your

OOne of the quickest ways to give your home a makeover is to freshen upthe exterior with a coat of paint or stain. But years of repainting or stain-ing your home might leave you less than enthused about doing it again. With technology, however, there are now more options for improving yourhome’s look, just in time for the spring season.

Final Coat Exteriors offers a spray-on exterior coating product whichprevents homeowners from having to constantly repaint.

“Our product blends the beauty of fresh paint with the maintenancefreedom of vinyl siding,” explains Sam Litwin, president, Final CoatExteriors. “The coating is 15 times thicker than ordinary paint and itcan be applied to wood, stucco, aluminum, cedar, masonry and more.Though thick, it maintains the integrity of the surface it goes over. Thecoating is warranted for as long as you own your home and is transfer-able.”

Homeowners can choose from four different textures and more than1,500 standard colors. Custom-matched colors are also an option, ifyou’re looking for something specific.

“To determine which color is right for your home, consider the sur-rounding landscaping and neighborhood homes,” says Litwin.

You can also feel good about making your home more green. FinalCoat Exterior’s special coatings help the environment by cutting downon greenhouse emissions with the lowest volatile organic compounds(VOCS) of any coating. “It is a true green product which is energy-effi-cient and people, pet and plant friendly,” adds Litwin.

FINDING A CONTRACTORWhen choosing a contractor for your project, always check for licensing, liability insurance and worker’s compensation, says Litwin. Finding theright person to handle your job is crucial.

“View at least five homes the contractor has completed that are atleast three years old. Also check with the Better Business Bureau and theDepartment of Consumer Affairs for any complaints,” he adds. “In addi-tion to items being coated, also include what is not to be coated accord-ing to the contract, and have the contractor commit to a time frame towhen the project should start and be completed. Other than cases ofinclement weather, the project should be worked on for consecutivedays.”

Litwin also says you should make sure the same crew will work on theproject from beginning to end.

the sky is the limit

landscaping: tree houses

AAs kids, we love to climb trees. Up there, closer to the heavens, all of ourdreams seem within reach. The sky is the realm of astronauts, superheroesand fairies. As adults, we rarely look up. Our responsibilities are heavyand they weigh us down. Tree houses change all that, they provide the gift of aspiration to a child or awaken the dreams of an adult.

Whether young or grown, there are plenty of reasons to consideradding a tree house to the backyard. It can offer additional space, privacyand a sense of fun.

For kids, a tree house is a place to play with others or a special club-house—all their own. From a tree, a child can spy on the world below, learn about the birds and observe the stars, swing like Tarzan, camp outlike a castaway, read fairy tales, get creative and indulge the imagination,or just watch for images in the clouds.

There are also many ‘responsible’ reasons an adult can justify a treehouse. It can offer a unique place for a home office, studio or guesthouse. A room in the leaves affords great views without harming orremoving the surrounding trees. It presents a source of inspiration and aconnection with nature. From there, cool summer breezes or uninterrupt-ed sunshine can be enjoyed. A tree house provides privacy for meditation, napping or romance. As a practical matter, tree houses are not taxed as ahome addition and do not add impervious surface to a property.

There are six primary types of tree houses: those built around thetrunk of a tree, in the branches of a tree or using the remains of a tree, those supported by several trees, those that just sit among the trees orthose built without a tree at all. The type of tree house built deter-mines which type of attachment is used. Some rely on braces andbolts, while others employ means of suspension or rubber supportsthat allow for tree growth.

Though a very large tree is needed to support a house with its trunkor branches, almost any tree is suitable for the other methods of con-struction. Many tree houses will require some sort of footer for addi-tional support. Take care to minimize damage to the roots of the tree.Wood is the primary building material used because of its strength, weight and flexibility. The components of most tree houses are built atthe site on the ground, and then lifted into the tree for installation. Anarchitect or engineer may be required to approve the design of a treehouse; some townships may require a permit.

When beginning to design a tree house, first consider the way itwill be used. It can offer the shelter of a roof and walls, or simply bean open platform. Shade can be provided with a pergola or canopy.Multiple levels allow space for a variety of uses. These can be connect-ed with bridges, catwalks or ladders.

Of course, there are also many other options to access a tree house, including climbing nets, walls and ropes, stairs, ramps or even winchesused with climbing gear. To exit, alternative means, such a trapdoor, slide or fire pole, add a sense of adventure!

Other accessories include a basket and pulley for lifting provisionsup to the house, windows to allow light and breezes in, hooks forlanterns and gear, hammocks and furniture for comfort, monkey bars, swings and even zip-lines for play. The age of the occupants will deter-

mine what is appropriate. Adults may want to consider adding electrici-ty, heat and even running water.

Style, too, has limitless possibilities. A tree house can be built toresemble a castle, fort or ship. It can feature the details of a Victorianhome, a rustic cabin or an elfish dwelling. More mature choices includedesigning the tree house to match the home, complement the yard orblend into the landscape.

Safety is an important consideration, especially if the tree house isintended for children. Select a site that allows for supervision of youngerkids while still providing some privacy and minimizing the noise oftheir activity. The height of the house may also vary depending on theage of the user. Steps and ladders should include handrails, while allopen decks should be protected with a railing. Polycarbonate is a saferchoice for windows that could be broken not only by play, but also withswaying branches. It is important to maintain the components of a treehouse and conduct a yearly inspection of both the structure and thetree. The health of the tree is important. Prune out dead wood as need-ed and prevent damage by allowing for tree growth.

With thoughtful planning and care, a tree house can provide a placefor the dreams of both children and adults to almost touch the sky!

By including full project management services, they can coordi-nate projects from concept to completion.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling, countertops and cabi-nets are two of the largest aspects of the job. Diamond Kitchen& Bath offers a huge selection of countertop materials and ninedifferent lines of cabinets. This means that customers can selectfrom hundreds of flooring products in their spacious showroom. The company also offers all the materials at any pricing level thatwould be needed to renovate a bathroom.

“The design possibilities of today’s bathrooms are unlimited,”says Reisbord. “And the old rules don’t apply—even large frame-less showers are now commonplace!”

A HELPING HAND

The company constantly updates its kitchen and bathroomshowroom to allow homeowners to select the most current mate-rials for their projects. Additionally, Diamond Kitchen & Bathoffers a large selection and wide array of styles and samples forevery taste imaginable. One of the most popular areas is a dedi-cated home theater room.

“The showroom is frequently changing to keep up with thelatest products and trends,” says Reisbord. “We always have new

products on hand. We also offer a full tile showroom and a full hardwood showroom, and now even carry Miele applianceson-site.”

And when it comes to a helping hand, the company’s profes-sionals are available every step of the way. Experienced designconsultants can help homeowners decide what choices might bebest for their particular project while offering plenty of profes-sional advice tailored to the homeowner’s specific needs.

If homeowners are struggling with putting together a realisticbudget that still gives them the remodeled space of their dreams,a professional designer can guide them through the entire processworking with nearly any budget.

“There’s no difference in how the customer is treated, orwhether we accept a job that’s high-end or moderate,” Reisbordstresses. “We’re realistic and we’re budget-oriented. If a customerhas only a certain amount that he/she wants to spend, then we’llhelp meet those requirements and still get the project done with-in the budget and beautifully.”

Being a direct distributor is an aspect that helps DiamondKitchen & Bath manage its pricing. “This allows us a lot morecontrol over our projects and keeps the pricing in line,” Reisbordpoints out.

Every project begins with a free consultation, so homeownerscan discuss what they are looking for in a home remodel. “We sitdown in the design room and create a 3-D photo-like rendering,in the home or showroom, of exactly what their project wouldlook like,” explains Reisbord.

Once the work begins, the company remains equally involvedfrom start to finish. “We’re very proactive about being availablefor whatever our clients need,” says Reisbord. “We want to be onthe scene for our customers. your ticketto enjoying life in thegreat outdoors By Lindsey Getz

decks and patios

AA deck or patio can be added to almost any home, and is an easyway to get more enjoyment out of your backyard at a cost thatfits your budget. You can have your deck or patio designed withthe bare minimum to keep the cost down, or you can invest in allof the extras if you have the funds available. Both decks andpatios have plenty of benefits and can add value to your home.

One of the biggest pluses of adding a deck is that it expandsyour living space. “I’d say this is the biggest difference between adeck and a patio,” says Gustavo Delacruz, owner, BarrettContracting. “Decks are essentially an addition to the house—and it feels like a true addition because it’s at the same elevation. When you walk out from your kitchen or your backdoor, youwalk right onto the deck. So you’ve made your house bigger.”

Delacruz says that adding a covered or shaded portion, such asa pergola, has been very popular because it extends the use of thedeck by giving you more time outside. “If there’s a little bit ofrain, or it’s a really hot day, you can still spend time outdoorsbecause the deck is partially covered,” he explains.

When planning your outdoor living space, adds John Keller,

owner, Sequoia Supply, it is important for homeowners not onlyto visualize the product they are considering, but to see the prod-uct within its setting. “Actually seeing, touching and walking onthe product in place within a setting surrounded by outdooraccessories, such as those in our expansive showroom in Hatfield, allows homeowners the luxury of getting a firsthand look at thetexture, style and coloring,” he says.

COMPOSITE DECKING MEANS LOW MAINTENANCE

If you’re considering a deck, but don’t want the maintenanceinvolved with wood, you may want to consider composite deck-ing, says Bill Wilson, owner, Amazing Decks. These have the lookof wood but don’t require periodic sanding or staining. Thoughthey can be more expensive upfront, they’ll save you the time andexpense of the regular upkeep associated with treated lumber.

Wilson says that homeowners today are requesting compositesthat have a deeper and richer tone. These darker colored decksmake a bold statement and look nice with the contrast of brightwhite rails.

“Today’s composite materials are exceeding customers’ expecta-tions,” he adds. “These materials no longer look artificial, areincredibly durable and are impervious to mold.”

TROPICAL HARDWOODS OFFER DURABILITY

Another option is tropical hardwoods, such as ipe, which is quitedurable and also requires minimal maintenance when comparedto treated lumber. “You don’t have to stain it and it really doesn’trequire much protection,” says Juan Cardona, Chester Countyfranchise owner, Archadecks. “Although these woods can beexpensive, they will last up to 30 years without a problem. Ipe isactually the kind of wood they chose to build the boardwalk inAtlantic City, which gets a lot of traffic. It was chosen for itsdurability.”

Cellular PVC is a newer choice, which has been called the nextgeneration of decking, reports Delacruz. It gives homeowners yetanother choice of materials. While composites generally contain amixture of recycled woods and plastic resin, cellular PVC does

Incorporating just one small covered area can allow you to enjoy the outdoors, even when the weather isn’t great. This deck was created by Archadeck ofChester County. Juan Cardona, Photographer

not contain any wood fibers. That means it is not porous and iscompletely resistant to stains, whereas with composite, stainscould potentially occur, and with treated lumber they are likely to occur.

“You could spill red wine on your deck and not have to worryone bit,” says Delacruz. “It’s definitely lower maintenance, too.”

Because the product is still relatively new, there are only a lim-ited number of colors available compared to composites, and thetechnology to make it look like wood may not be up to par yet. Also, cellular PVC typically costs up to 25 percent more thancomposite materials. If you’re looking for a maintenance-freeproduct, this new decking material could be your best bet.

PATIOS PROVIDE THE IDEAL GATHERING PLACE

Adding a patio is a great way to enhance your backyard. “It also adds a place for entertaining,” says James Texada, owner, TexadaLandscaping, Inc. “You can create a space where everyone can gather outdoors.”

Materials, including manmade concrete blends and naturalproducts, like slate, fieldstone or brick, are available. The choicedepends largely on your sense of style, budget and what mightblend well with the surrounding area. “A lot of homeowners aregoing for a more natural look to incorporate their landscaping aswell,” notes Bill Weingartner, owner, Hammerhead Landscaping.

When most homeowners decide on a patio build, they areoften also interested in improving their surrounding landscape. That may include the addition of a waterscape, says Weingartner.“It is a feature that promotes relaxation and can be incorporatednearby, in a pool or as an accent pond or fountain.”

CREATING ROOMS FOR OUTDOOR LIVING

The biggest trend in both decks and patios is the concept of out-door living areas. “We’re finding that families are creating rooms intheir backyards that are similar to the indoor kitchen or familyroom,” says Weingartner. “With the economy people are vacation-ing less, and instead investing money into their home and makingit a place they really enjoy. It’s like bringing the vacation destination

to your own backyard. And it’s something you’ll be able to enjoyfor years to come.”

Today’s outdoor living area incorporates virtually anything youhave indoors. “We’ve even done flat screen televisions as part ofthe patio,” says Texada. “If you have a fireplace, a grill and a TV,it’s the ideal place to hang out with friends and family.”

Fireplaces or firepits are definitely one of the biggest trendsthat enhance a deck or a patio. Adding a fire element extends theamount of time you’ll be able to spend outdoors. “You may get asmany as two or three extra months outside because the fire keepsthe space warm,” Texada points out. “With a fire going, you canenjoy the outdoors in the evening when the temperature drops.”

Other popular add-ons include hot tubs, bars, fridges andgrills. “What’s also popular right now is using natural gas asopposed to propane tanks for the grill,” adds Weingartner.“Homeowners want to run a gas line out to their grill so that it’sconstant, eliminating the chore of running to the store to refillthe tank.”

Regardless of your final choice, a deck or patio adds extra spacefor entertaining, as well as the opportunity for more enjoyment inthe great outdoors. And no matter which features and add-onsyou choose, you can be sure a new deck or patio will quicklybecome your family’s new favorite gathering place.

5 ways to cut waste: do your part!

By Jeffrey Jacoby

4. ADVOCATE FOR TAKEBACK INITIATIVES

In the high-tech industry, companies are begin-

ning to take back their old products for

reuse and recycling. Because these compa-

nies want to maximize efficiency by

recovering reusable raw materials

while minimizing the cost of dispos-

al and recycling, producer takeback

gives them an economic incentive

to design recyclable products

that last longer, contain fewer

toxins and create less waste. Tell

your lawmakers to extend these

takeback initiatives to include

other electronics and anything

needing a viable recycling

option.

5. NOT OUT OF SIGHT, NOT OUT OF MIND

More than anything, waste reduc-

tion is a mindset. When we buy

something, use it for a minute and

then toss it in the trash, it’s typically

hauled off to a dump somewhere—out

of sight, out of mind. Conversely, when

we pay attention to the potential repercus-

sions of our actions, we are already moving away

from the disposable culture that creates mountains of

waste toward a sustainable environmental future.

go green

1. BUY LESS STUFF

The most effective way to reduce the amount ofwaste your household produces is to buy lessstuff. When we consume a given product, the amount of energy used and waste gen-erated in the manufacturing process isoften many times greater than dispos-ing of the product itself. In fact, 71garbage cans’ worth of industrialwaste are produced for each can ofdiscarded products and packagingset out at curbside. Wheneverpossible, reuse or repair old stuffrather than simply buying new.

2. PLAN AHEAD

Reduce your footprint with justa little foresight. Use recyclingbins and canvas shopping bags, fill up a long-lasting metal orhard plastic water bottle at homeor from a fountain instead of buy-ing the single-use variety to elimi-nate your contribution to the 40-million plastic bottles a day that endup in landfills and save hundreds ofgallons of petroleum (used in makingthe plastic) over a lifetime. Rather thanpicking up that disposable coffee cupfrom Starbucks, bring a thermos or travelmug to reduce paper waste.

3. COMPOST ORGANIC WASTE

If Americans kept organic materials, such as food scraps, yardtrimmings and paper out of landfills, we could cut our annualwaste stream in half. Check out online composting guides andthe EPA’s grasscycling site for more information.

Create less waste by using a canvas shop-ping bag, such as this one by EcoBags. Visitwww.ecobags.com for more information.

paving the way to paradise

IIt’s no secret: When it comes to a home’s value, first impressionsare important. Whether you’re sprucing up your exterior to sellor dwell, curb appeal increases a house’s value without a doubt.

No one knows this better than Global Contracting. Foundedin 1976, the hardscape company specializes in bringing stun-ning style to a home’s exterior.

Global Contracting can give inground pools a completedlook with custom designed sidewalk/patio combinations; com-bine pavers with stonework to transform a boring backyard intoa dramatic dreamland; or install keystone or decorative walls.

A PRIVATE PARADISE

The company notes on its website that pavers offer the strengthof concrete with unmatched versatility when designing walk-ways.

“We are qualified to install Belgard paving stone projects andBelgard retaining walls of any size,” says William Hammond, president of Global Contracting.

Belgard products take pride in their extensive history of suc-cessful applications on residential and commercial projects.Versatile and quality-tested, Belgard’s concrete pavers are mostcommonly used when creating driveways, walkways and patios. These pavers are designed to provide protection in all types ofclimates and can be assembled in various styles and patterns. They also flatter landscapes and enhance the attractiveness ofhomes.

raised patios, firepits and gazebos. For Tom and Karen Larson, recent clients of Global Contracting, paradise came in the formof an outdoor kitchen/entertaining area.

The Larsons wanted a large outside entertaining area thatblended in with the natural landscape. “They chose us to com-plete the project due to our quality, referrals and because we area family business,” states Hammond.

The project, which started and finished in 2007, was builtusing Belgard’s Mega Bergerac and 3- and 6-inch CountryManor walls.

“We used New- and Old-World looks by combining a char-coal grill, a raised patio with a separate sitting area, a half circlewall and a firepit,” says Hammond.

At the start of the project, Global Contracting presented twoentirely different designs to the homeowners, who chose thenatural-looking draft. Once the couple made that initial deci-sion, the plan was expanded to include waterfalls, a separatepatio and a firepit.

GOING WITH THE NATURAL FLOW

Hammond discloses that one of the main challenges was mak-ing the project flow with the natural landscape. To resolve thisproblem, Global Contracting used many curves and heightchanges, he explains.

“When the project was complete, it looked as if it had alwaysbeen there. It blended into the natural landscape perfectly,” saysHammond.

Because it is a family-owned business, Hammond says GlobalContracting is able to make a direct personal connection withevery one of its clients. As a member of The New JerseyNurseryman Association, all of the company’s installations areguaranteed and its professional crews are fully insured.

“All of our employees are more than qualified and areextremely professional at all of the sites,” Hammond points out.“All of our projects have exceptionally quick turnaround timesbecause once we start, we never leave a project until it is com-pleted.”

picture-perfect pools

BBlue Haven Pools & Spas is a name recognized from coast-to-coast for its custom inground swimming pools and spas. But whatmany people don’t know is that Blue Haven not only designs andinstalls brand new pools, the company is skilled and experiencedin renovating existing pools as well.

“Lately we’re doing more and more renovations on top ofdesigning and installing new pools,” reports Dominic DiCesare, general manager. “If the homeowners had a pool put in 10 or 15years ago, the technology we have today was not available. Wecan take their existing pool and turn it into a backyard paradiseby adding water features, new finishes, lounging areas, bar stools and more.”

The company’s pool renovation professionals can give an ordi-nary pool a complete modernization and style makeover, addsDiCesare. A new design with attractive updates adds value toyour property, and gives you a pool you can really enjoy. It mayalso be a way to enhance safety. “We often update pools for fami-lies that had a pool installed when their kids were little,” saysDiCesare. “Today they don’t want a huge pool with a deep end. This may be frightening for some older homeowners who justwant a pool they can relax in. So we can turn their pool into ashallow-end pool, get rid of the diving board or slide and addsome soothing water features. We transform the existing pool intoa backyard paradise, and when the kids and grandkids come, there’s still a great pool to enjoy.”

There are many ways that Blue Haven can update an existingpool. It all depends on what the homeowner wants. Some areadding a spa or color-changing lighting; others want a resurfacedinterior with one of the new finishes available. Blue Haven canalso add custom tile, stone, brick and other masonry work, oreven aid in deck repairs or replacements.

Since today’s technology has changed dramatically, homeownerswith an older-style pool are smart to consider an upgrade. “Manyhomeowners want to switch from manual to automated controls,”adds DiCesare. “The updated technology available today makescaring for a pool much easier.”

Many homeowners are also looking for ‘green’ technology. They want cost savings, as well as energy-efficient products. Someof these products include heat pumps, solar heat, variable speedpumps, LED lighting, salt sanitizers and non-backwashing filters.

While renovations have become incredibly popular, that’s notto say people are not installing new pools as well. “With the waythe economy is going, more people are staying in their homes, rather than putting money into moving,” says DiCesare. “They’drather see that money go into their homes, so they invest in a newbackyard pool to enhance their home and property value.”

Whether you’re a first-time pool buyer or are considering amakeover for your existing pool, Blue Haven can guide you alongthe way and provide everything you need. Either way, it’s a greatinvestment in the value of your home, your property and yourenjoyment.

Blue Haven Pools & Spas has four area locations in addition to itshome office in Hatfield: Exton, Colmar, PA and West Berlin andMorganville, NJ. For more information, visit www.bluehaven.com or call 215-996-0660 or 800-219-2141.

WWhen Jose and Gail Nevarez called me about their combina-tion hall bath/powder room, they were stuck. Their downstairsbath, located just off the entry hall, was in the midst of amakeover, and Gail needed guidance.

WHERE TO BEGIN?Jose and Gail already had added beaded board wainscoting tothe walls and were in the process of taking down the existingcounter-to-ceiling mirror and old light fixture.

“I wasn’t sure about what to do with the shower curtain, whether or not to change the wall color, what to do about art-work and how to get more storage space,” Gail explains. “I wasso excited to have our master bath and bedroom finished that Iwas eager to get direction for the hall bath as well.”

After listening carefully to her concerns, in short order wecame up with a cost-effective plan together. First, for consis-tency and flow, I recommended Jose trust his instincts andframe the mirror just like he framed the mirrors in the masterbath, including staining the wood the same color, which looksterrific with the Saltillo tile floors and continues the estab-lished flow.

HARDWARE MATTERS

I also encouraged them to buy and install the same light fix-ture and brushed nickel hardware from Pottery Barn they usedin the master bath.Tip. To ensure high resale value, be consistent with hardware. You can mix “cool” metals, such as brushed nickel, brushedpewter and chrome, but “warm” metals, like antique brass, shiny brass and oil-rubbed bronze don’t mix at all with “cool”metals—or among each other.

SHOWER (CURTAIN) POWER

Since the room has 10-foot ceilings, a standard shower curtainwould look quite short. I recommended that Gail go to Ikeaand buy ready-made Merete ($25) grommet-top curtain panelsin beige. The panels come two to a package, and she boughttwo packages of 57 by 118-inch long panels in order to makethe shower curtain extra full and luxurious. The grommet-toppanels come with a handy iron-on strip to hem them to thedesired length. The plastic liner hangs from the couple’s exist-ing, separate rod behind the Ikea panels.

Tip. The inexpensive panels were hung from a Lowe’s rod, halfway between the 10-foot ceiling and the tub’s wall tile, toaccent the room’s tall ceilings.

“I must admit it was a leap of faith to hang the panels sohigh in my tiny bath,” Gail says. “But instead of making theroom feel smaller, the tall panels made it feel larger.Conversely, it was interesting to me that having the old mirrorgo to the ceiling did the opposite.”

PAINT, ARTWORK AND MORE

Gail was concerned the mushroom color would not work withthe new Benjamin Moore chilled chardonnay wall color, whichmatches the nearby entry hall. I assured her the Ikea panelswould blend with the grout in the tile and that they were bothneutrals that worked well together.

To address her desire for additional storage, Gail bought awhite, $60 classic wooden wall cabinet from Target to holdextra hand towels and toiletries, and Jose hung it above thewainscoting.

“Suddenly everything came together,” Gail says with asmile, “and the room seemed more pulled together, more ele-gant.”

I suggested she rehang her small framed verse centeredbelow the storage cabinet, and either replace or remat andreframe her existing artwork into a larger size, 39 by 27 inchestall, to hang above the towel bar. Gail opted to purchase newartwork in a frame that matched the stain on Jose’s mirrorframe.Tip. Most homeowners err on the side of timidity when pur-chasing artwork and accessories. Fewer, larger pieces have moreimpact than lots of small items.

Additionally, I showed her how to layer the fluffy whitebath and hand towels on the 24-inch towel bar to create a

the Pottery Barn light fixture. “It was by far the most expen-sive purchase, but I feel that the value it added to our homewas worth much more than it cost,” she says.

THE FINISH LINE

Like a lot of homeowners, Gail feels overwhelmed when shegoes to a store without a specific plan. “Everything looks goodto me, and I don’t know where to begin shopping—or end,”she says.

With a list of things to buy, the proper sizes and stores to goto, Gail says she could confidently buy without coming homewith “mistakes and misgivings.” Once she purchased certainkey elements, the rest fell into place. She even felt confidentenough to buy a handsome wall sconce light at Lowe’s, whichwas not on her list.

sheet metal comes on strong in residential applications

By Brenda Weinrich

kitchen trends: take a shine to it

WWe’re taking a shine to sheet metal in our homes—from countertopsto custom vent hoods to accessory applications in every room.

Stainless steel countertops are increasing in popularity becausethey complement professional-grade stoves and stainless appliances inhomes. Some people like stainless steel countertops in their kitchensbecause they create the look and functionality of a restaurantkitchen. And some homeowners like sheet metal simply because itprovides a clean and bold look that stands out.

Pairing metal with wood or stone offers a more residential look.Try mixing stainless steel tops with wood cabinet bases, or use stain-less steel cabinets with granite countertops.

MANY METALS

Metal finishes needn’t be limited to steel. If you’re seeking a moretraditional look for your kitchen, try hammered copper for cabinets.

Brass and bronze are other metals that can be custom-crafted foryour home. Chemicals can be poured over the metals to create a vari-ety of patinas and finishes in different colors. These colors includeverdigris (green), brown, gold and blackened silver.

Galvanized steel has an interesting look because the metal flakes inthe coating can be as big as a quarter. Because the welding processdestroys these flecks, galvanized steel is best utilized when it can bebent into place or powder coated in a specific color.

KITCHENS AND MORE

Sheet metal is a design element that can be carried throughout yourhome. Local metal fabricators, with their skill and ingenuity, cancraft metal into almost any shape you can imagine.

You can have a local metal fabricator make decorative aluminumdoors, for example, or build floor-to-ceiling freestanding medicinecabinets for a bathroom.

Sheet metals can also be crafted into shelves, tables, fireplace sur-rounds, unusual shaped sinks, vent hoods, barbecue pits and summerkitchens.

FINISHING DETAILS

Once you have decided on the type of metal you want to use andwhere to use it, consider a few finish options. Most stainless steelappliances use a grain finish. But you can also choose a non-direc-tional finish to create a unique look that camouflages inevitable These freestanding medicine cabinets with mirrors on both sides were custom

fingerprints and scratches. Fabricators can create a variety of non-directional designs. You can

create a distressed look with the grinder going in a variety of direc-tions, a hammered effect, or even an orbital finish with a rotatingpattern.

If you stick with a typical grain finish, you can sand out scratcheswith sandpaper by sanding slowly in a left-to-right direction of thegrain and follow up with a clear sealer. Most likely, your home accentmetals will be made of 12- to 26-gauge sheet metal, typically in thelighter gauges.

Eight grades of stainless steel polish are available. Grade 1 isstraight from the mill with a dull reflection. Grades 3 and 4 have thebrushed grain look that is similar to most kitchen appliances. For ahighly-polished look, which is similar to flatware utensils, request themirrored polish, which is Grade 8.

Once you have determined the finish, you can select a 3-D pat-tern, if you like. Patterns can be pressed or molded. For example, apopular look is a diamond-shaped quilted effect, reminiscent of a1950s-style diner backsplash. Some people choose a corrugated metalbacksplash in polished steel, which provides an industrial and high-tech look.

IS IT EXPENSIVE? The installed price for a countertop is about $40 to $50 per squarefoot. Obviously, a firm quote can be provided after a field measure, after defining your scope of work and including factory delivery andunique installation costs.

WHO DARES?The industrial quality of sheet metal is a perfect fit for a loft. Thesetrendy living spaces are rooted in manufacturing history, but theyaren’t the only ones who are into metal. Suburban patios are sportingsheet metal range hoods and metal cabinetry as well.

Metals offer function and good looks. Quality stainless steel iswater-, rot- and pest-proof. If you’re looking for a functional and dis-tinctive look for your home, consider giving it a bit of shine withsheet metal.

The edge of this stainless steel countertop rises slightly to catch spills. Thecountertops are extra-deep for more workspace, and a stainless steel shelf inback is handy for holding spices and cooking implements.

handsome hardwood

HHardwood floors have always been a popular choice for theirtimeless, classic beauty. And today, hardwood can be installed inalmost any room. “The beauty of a natural product, such aswood, is unlike any other,” says Anthony Sherkness, sales manag-er, Miller Flooring Company. “It also increases the value of anyhome and makes the home more attractive to potential buyers.”

“Hardwood is a beautiful material that looks great in anyhome, no matter what the décor or style is,” says Mike Junker, manager, Maro’s Floor Covering. “But the benefits go beyond

appearance. Hardwood is also easy to maintain and adds value tothe home. In fact, I don’t believe any product comes close toadding the value that hardwood does.”

HARDWOOD 101Wood flooring can be classified by the type of wood, eitherdomestic or exotic (imported), and also by the treatment, prefin-ished or unfinished, explains John Condon, owner, Harrison’sHardwoods, LLC, which installs both types. While some compa-nies only carry prefinished lines, Harrison’s can finish the woodon-site as well.

Different products are further distinguished by factors, likestyle (strip, plank or parquet), width, length and thickness of the flooring, among other specifics. “There are numerous factors toconsider when selecting a wood flooring product that is appro-priate for your home,” adds Condon. “You should considerthings like the style you’d like to achieve (classic, contemporary, country or rustic) and what flooring best suits your lifestyle.”

The distressed look is also popular, adds Steve Stoltzfus, co-owner, Country Floor Store. This type of wood comes in manyvarieties. “Some are made to look like they are 100 years old, but

This is a site-finished edge grain white oak floor. The edge grain means the wood is milled and cut on an angle to ensure that the grain is vertical and tight. a more conservative look tends to be most popular,” Stoltzfuscontinues. “They don’t have a scraped edge, but still have somemarkings that give it a little character.”

The style that you want to achieve determines which woodyou select. Domestic woods, like oak and cherry, are still popular. But the biggest trend today is exotic hardwoods, explainsSherkness. “They seem to perform and hold up a little betterbecause they’re slightly denser in structure, making them harderto ding and dent. They add a lot of warmth to a room.”

There are many options when it comes to exotic hardwoods, which come from places like South America or Africa. Goingwith one of these imported woods is a way to make your homeunique. Some interesting choices, suggests Condon, include thefollowing:

Brazilian cherry––When first milled, this is a tan/salmon colorwith black striping which turns a rich, deep red over time.

Brazilian teak––Extremely hard, dense wood with a tan tobrownish-red color. It has a wide color range.

Jarrah––Unique wood from Australia, jarrah’s color ranges frompink-reds to burgundy.

Tigerwood––Boldly striped wood, this has an orange/reddishbrown background with wide dark brownish-black striping.

Eco-friendly options are definitely important to today’s home-owners, adds Roy Wyatt, sales and estimating, Holland FloorCovering. Natural materials, like bamboo or cork flooring, aretop picks, as are sustainable hardwoods like Brazilian cherry, which is one of the most popular imported hardwoods becauseof its beautiful color and durability. And selecting it doesn’t meanstripping down natural resources. “Many woods are harvestedfrom their own forest and then replanted, so it’s definitely agreen choice,” Wyatt notes.

FLOOR MAINTENANCE

Most people find hardwood flooring fairly simple to maintain,Wyatt points out. “But if you drag a chair that doesn’t have fur-niture pads on the legs, it’s going to scratch,” he says. “So youstill have to be careful. All wood will get some scratches, nicks

and dents, so the hardness of the wood you select should dependon your lifestyle.”

For a room that gets a lot of use, you’ll want to avoid softerwoods that can be dented easily. “Wood floors, like Americancherry or walnut, are gorgeous, but high in maintenance becausethe woods are very soft,” continues Wyatt.

As far as cleaning and caring for hardwood, the maintenancehas never been easier, says Condon. “Regular cleaning involvessweeping with a soft bristle broom and vacuuming with a softfloor attachment,” he says. “You should also clean your floorsperiodically with a professional wood floor cleaning product. Werecommend Bona’s Swedish formula hardwood floor cleaner.”

The cleaner you keep your floor, the more likely it will hold upwell, adds Sherkness. “If you let dirt and other particles build up,they can get ground into the floor,” he says. “But if you do somevery simple maintenance with a hardwood flooring kit, whichMiller Flooring gives to customers for every job completed, you’llhelp maintain the floor’s beauty.”

No matter what product you end up choosing, hardwood’sbest characteristic is that it is long-lasting. Wyatt summarizes:“Hardwood is probably the best investment you can make inyour home because it’s really durable and will last 30 or 40 years. With the way the economy is, it’s hard to find a product thatyou’ll actually get your money’s worth out of, but hardwood isdefinitely a smart investment.”

wallpaper can create in your home. I love to use paper in specialplaces to promote an instant ‘wow’ that is not possible with anyother wallcovering material. There are many areas of the home thatreally benefit from the use of paper. Formal dining rooms, forexample, achieve an elevated style by using paper to create the ele-gant feeling of a special occasion. Powder rooms, which by theirvery nature are smaller private spaces, can give license to a granddecor that is a welcoming break from the larger common areas ofthe home.

Kitchens are another area of the home that benefit greatly fromthe ‘warming’ effect of wallpaper. Paper can enhance your beautiful

wood cabinets, making them stand out in your design. By usingsunny colors or patterns with a European motif, you can also createthat same ambiance appreciated in great restaurants.

I often like to use wallpaper in bedrooms or, alternatively, in anattached sitting room. This important space benefits from aromantic setting that can often be created by lovely wallpaper. Ifpaper is used in one area, I like to add paint or a soft stripe in con-junction with a pattern to give the sitting area a different feelingthan the main bedroom. You spend a lot of time in your bedroom, make it special!

MORE THAN ONE COLOR

With wallpaper, you get more than one color on the wall. Animportant aspect of paper versus paint is that with paint no matterhow great the color, it is still only one color. Even when usingtone-on-tone wallpaper, you are adding multiple shades of color tothe wall. This can be a very helpful way to combine the variouscolors in your overall home design.

Wallpaper can also give the illusion of texture to a wall. Thereare wonderful new textured papers, as well as flat papers, that givethe look of texture through layered patterns. Both can impart aunique feeling to your room.

Today’s wallpapers are a far cry from the old-fashioned looks ofdays gone by. The quality is greatly improved as well. Easy-to-useadhesives, primers and industry innovations make putting wallpa-per up and taking it down simple.

One word of caution for installing wallpaper is to do it properly.Make sure your walls are sized properly and the paper is pasted theright way with the right amount of paste. Don’t waste money on

pre-pasted wallpaper. Generally, it is not of great quality, and it isoften hard to remove afterward. If you can afford to have yourpaper installed by a professional, it is money well-spent.

SIGNATURE PRINT

One of the tricks for selecting wallpaper is to choose a signatureprint to coordinate an area and use around the house. Choose aprint you love. This will be your signature print that sets the colorscheme for the room. Signature prints usually contain several col-ors and a large scale pattern.

Let one color from your signature print dominate. Use thiscolor in as much as 2/3 of the available area. Pull two to three col-ors from your signature print to act as support or accent colors.Use them in smaller areas and in accessories. Carry your colorscheme throughout the entire house to create strong visual conti-nuity. Varying the dominant color and patterns you use in eachroom, while remaining faithful to your basic color scheme, keepsyour home interesting, yet unified.

Another key to decorating with wallpaper is to recognize yourpersonality traits and complement them with the right color andpattern. If you find yourself feeling stressed at the end of the day, then decorate your resting space, a reading room, bedroom or den,in paler colors that will help calm you. If your home suffers fromlack of sunlight, use sunny yellow or golden mustard as your colorof choice; it will perk up your spirit.

WHAT’S YOUR WALLPAPER STYLE

There are many styles of paper from which to choose; some choicesinclude:

English Country style—popular because of its tremendousdiversity. It can be formal, traditional and conservative, or as freshas a country cottage done in garden florals. The provincial styleincorporates a tasteful blend of botanical themes.

Leather look, leather feel—combines a fashion trend that nevergoes out of style with a home decor option that creates an elegant, luxurious room. The popular leather palette selection includebeiges, taupes and creams combined with rich rusts, terra cottas, browns and warm greens. Some even have the feel of a well-wornEnglish saddle.

Paisley—Fashionable since the 11th century, paisley never goesout of style! Since paisley has been around for so long, the colorsand patterns can be seen on clothing, home furnishings, accessoriesand more. It has its own fashion sense, appealing to even the picki-est consumers. Paisley motifs range from complex and lavish tosimple and stylized. Paisley's dominant motif takes the form ofdrops or tears with rich colors to accentuate its design.

Plaids and stripes—Of all the design styles, the most basic ofall is probably stripes. They visually raise the height of the ceilingby drawing the eye upward. The clean tailored look of a stripe willalways be in style and bring order to your room. In wallpaper, justas in fabrics, a stripe is a staple design element. One of myfavorites is always a tone-on-tone stripe. This is a way to bring twoor more shades of color to the wall, always more interesting thanjust one color.

The use of plaids is often associated with country decorating orthe style of decorating made famous by designer Ralph Lauren.Because a plaid can have large and small stripes and many greatcolors, it is also useful in bringing several decorating colors togeth-er to add cohesiveness to your room.

Classic French Toile de Jouy—Sometimes abbreviated to sim-ply toile, this type of pattern consists of a white or off-white back-ground on which a repeated pattern depicts a fairly complex scene, generally a pastoral theme. For example, a couple having a picnicby a lake or barnyard animal scenes are common. The pattern por-tion often consists of a single color, although today’s designers havegone far beyond that. A classic decorating style is to use matchingor coordinating toile fabrics on bedding and window treatments aswell.

Toile de Jouy originated in France in the 1800s. Although it hasbeen continuously produced since then, it has experienced amarked upsurge in popularity because of the soft and sophisticatedlook it gives a room.

IIf you’re thinking about putting in a swimming pool or reviv-ing an existing one, you’ll find plenty of new materials, tech-nologies and features.

Styles of swimming pools depend on personal taste, as poolscan be built in almost any shape you want. Most peoplechoose a pool that matches the style of their home. Backyardstend to be smaller these days, so some designs are now con-strained by easement.

POOL FASHIONS

Popular styles and shapes include:Exercise pool – This pool is typically long and thin, usuallyabout 12 feet wide and can run up to 40 feet long.Sports pool – This pool is usually deep in the middle, which

makes it perfect for water volleyball or basketball.Regular pool – This common and popular style pool goesfrom shallow to deep; a common depth variation is from 3 to7 feet.

Multiple levels, sheer descends and attractive landscaping make this pool a great place to spend the weekend with family and friends.

Classic Roman – This style has a straight length with roundedends. Lagoon pools – This style has lots of curves and loops withdifferent depths creating different play areas.

MATERIAL OPTIONS

Quartz aggregate is fast replacing the old standby, white plas-ter, for pool linings. Most manufacturers offer a 10-year war-ranty on quartz aggregate, so it can still look good after 15 or20 years.

With decking, an acrylic coating over concrete is a popularoption instead of pea gravel decking. With the acrylic coating, you can change colors and patterns almost as easily as chang-ing nail polish; or, if you prefer, it can last for years with prop-er care.

Most homeowners are not installing diving boards.Insurance companies frown on them because of the liability. Intheir place, a jump rock can provide an added benefit of visualinterest and encourages lots of fun.

Even the fashion of water has changed. Salt water is replac-ing chlorinated fresh water. Salt water pools use a saline

Water WorksBefore you begin work on your pool, take timeto research and answer these questions:

What is the true cost? The price tag for a pool depends on itsperimeter. Other variables include the choiceof materials, decking, landscaping and waterfeatures.

What are the ongoing maintenancerequirements?Consider a new pop-up cleaning system, thePCC 2000 by Paramount that comes with a99-percent cleaning guarantee and a lifetimewarranty on the heads within the pool. Thecost depends on the features and diameterof your pool, but starts at about $3,000.

What special services will be required?Check out warranties, annual service con-tracts and once-a-year maintenance require-ments.

solution, which is not only a more environmentally-friendlysubstance (it doesn’t dry out skin and hair like chlorine), but itis also cheaper to maintain in the long run. The initial outlayadds about $1,000 to $1,200 to the cost of a regular-sizedpool, but that expense is recovered by the second year.Converting an existing pool to salt water is relatively easy, atask that requires some plumbing and electrical reworking.

One thing that will never go out of style, though, is thehours of fun and enjoyment you can have in a swimming pool. So, jump on in. The water is just fine!

cypress, which is grown in hot, moist swamps, so they are ideal for warm climates. The wood will ‘pewter’ or

gray, but will withstand the elements.”

~ Laurie Rudd, creative director,

The HammockSource

“There are so many materials on the market—and range of

quality in those materials—that investigating what is available

and spending the extra money now will really translate into fur-

niture you can use for a long time. It is always a good idea to

keep cushions stored or inside as much as possible (especially

in rainy weather). Cushion foam and fabric, as good as they

are these days, can only withstand so much. They will last so

much longer if cared for properly.”

out of style, says Laurie Rudd, creative director, TheHammockSource. “Hammocks are more popular today than ever.Hammocks are also an international symbol of comfort and leisure. They can be found ‘setting the mood’ on television, in magazinesand on the Internet.”

COMFORT FIRST

One of The HammockSource’s most popular hammocks is theSoftWeave that incorporates woven ribbons of quilted outdoor fabricthat molds to the body, providing quilted comfort, as well as coolingairflow.

“In the past, rope hammocks have been the standard due to thecomfort of the intertwining ropes and the cooling airflow,” Ruddsays. “With the introduction of the quilted fabric, hammocks nowhave comfort and airflow, plus wide seating, which make them greatfor enjoying with little ones or even pets.”

Designate your relaxing spot with a monogrammed pillow atop a reversiblehammock by L.L.Bean made of fade- and mildew-resistant Sunbrella® fabric. The Sea Blue stripe material here flips to solid blue and comes with rust-resistant steel hanging hardware.

Take a nap, indoors or out, on West Elm’s open-design daybed of weather-resistant wood construction. The bed fits an outdoor mattress that can be dou-bly protected with an outdoor mattress cover.

At Henry Hall Designs, the Cocoon Hammock, which canaccommodate four people at one time—or a mountain of throw pil-lows—is a showstopper. The Cocoon blends a hardwood frame fromThailand with stainless steel components and weather-resistant meshmaterial from France.

AMAZING MATERIALS

The big story in materials is Hularo, a robust, durable synthetic thatcan be woven into many shapes, but is especially applicable for out-door furniture. Developed by furniture designer DEDON®, it isenvironmentally friendly and a breeze to maintain. It also is weather-and fade-resistant.

Another big idea in materials is DuraCord used by TheHammockSource for its hammocks, pillows and swings. It is verysoft, yet built to take the outdoor elements. Products made from thisfabric are stain-resistant, fade-resistant and nonabsorbent, whileretaining the soft feel of cotton.

alluring entryways

FFirst impressions are lasting impressions, and nowhere is this maximmore apt than at the entrance to your home. Whether your budget islarge or small, attention to entryway design adds excitement and ele-gance and offers a welcoming gesture to your guests.

INVITING EXTERIORS

Examine your front entrance from the walkway. Could the frontdoor use a fresh coat of paint? Does landscaping help define the frontentry? Are you placing more focus on where your guests are going topark their SUVs than on the look of your front entrance?

A pair of planters brimming with bright-colored annuals is an eco-nomical way to punctuate entries.

Besides pretty touches at the front door, practical decisions needto be made. Pay attention to outdoor lighting. Not only does it setthe mood, but if the walkway has stairs or an uneven surface, light-ing is a safety issue for guests.

Courtyards and gates can define front entries. The front door is

the first symbol you notice from the street. Antique French or cus-tom-made doors add punch to front entrances.

Have a well-defined entrance from the street, even if your lot con-figuration seems more suitable for a side entrance. Have a wall orgate that’s visible from the street, but leads to a passage or gallerythat brings guests to the center of the house.

BEYOND THE THRESHOLD

Contemporary entryways have evolved from the sparse, efficient foy-ers of the1960s to the sweeping staircases and 20-foot high ceilingsreminiscent of antebellum estates.

If you entertain frequently, a large entry is useful as a place forguests to circulate and to prevent bottlenecks at the front door. Ifyou don’t entertain much, however, generous square footage devotedto the entry can be wasted space.

In lieu of a grand entry, some designers prefer an entry that is inti-mate and offers a glimpse of the home’s beauty that unfolds room byroom as you wander through the house.

ACCESSORIZE

Whether the space is large or small, the entry should be clutter-free.Find an armoire, a chest or a catch-all piece that toys and mail canbe stored in for quick clean-up. Today, retailers such as Pottery Barnand Crate & Barrel produce attractive, reasonably priced armoires, benches and shelves with cubbies and baskets that are specificallydesigned to maximize space and bring order to entryways.

Add a personal touch to your front entry—photos or collectibles Enter and find yourself in an intimate seating area, ready to be entertainedwith music. Richard Holley, Photographer

entry points

• Examine your home from the curb or walk-

way. Does the entry look inviting or neglect-

ed? Does the door need updating? Could

you add some plantings or colorful pots of

annuals? What about a garden bench or

seating for a porch?

• Assess both indoor and outdoor lighting for

mood and ease of movement. Consider the

safety of outdoor lighting at night.

• Entryways are the perfect space to experi-

ment with bold colors and accessories. Since

you don’t spend much time there, you won’t

tire of the look.

A cozy, though appropriately elegant, diminutive dining area with table andchairs by Century Furniture is enveloped in the curve of a majestic sweepingstaircase.

Walk through the front door of an apartment or loft into an entry room of dar-ingly sophisticated color, shown here with bold red upholstered furniture andbold red accents. The Ultimum armchairs are Didier Gomez’s designs for LigneRoset. The Bubbles vase by Jacques Ducru and Yoko rug are also creations forLigne Roset.

Soft lighting sets the mood—and offers step safety—to this gate leading to afront entrance.

that tell a story about the people who live there. An interesting wallportrait or group of framed photos on an entry table can also person-alize the entry to your home.

Try bold flourishes at the entry. This is the place to splurge oncolor and drama because it’s a pass-through area that you won’t gettired of. Hang an ornamental chandelier. Paint the walls. If the spaceis large enough, add a French satin settee.

Hang a mirror in the entry when possible. Mirrors are pretty andpractical, as they give you an opportunity for last minute touch-ups.

Floors also can help define entryways. A raised entry with a stepdown into the living space is a graceful touch. Create borders andadd texture with space rugs and floor surfaces, such as tumbled mar-ble, tile or stone.

With a little forethought and a few decorative touches, yourhome’s entryway will be fun, functonal and unforgettable.

H&H

The entry gallery in this home is a towering space crowned with paned sky-lights. The natural elements of stone and large timber-like joists add a warmingeffect. Rex Spencer, Photographer
