BUCKS COUNTY HOUSE & HOME NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008 10

IIt’s hard to believe that we’re coming to the end of still another year. Where does the timereally go? Where is everyone rushing to, anyway? In this fast-paced, high-tech mega-mediaworld of overscheduling, cell phones, PDAs, text messaging—you name it—multitasking iscommonplace. As both young and old experience life in the fast lane more than ever before (Isthat a 6-year-old texting a friend on her own cell phone?), we need to take a d-e-e-p breathand s-l-o-w down.

Our year-end issue of HOUSE & HOME concentrates on entertaining at home and offerssuggestions to do just that—placing value and focusing on our most precious commodities:our families and our homes. This visiting season, we suggest that you invite friends over, lightthe fire, cozy up…and just stay home.

There are lots of reasons contained within this issue to help you stage an inviting at-homerelaxation scene: finishing your basement with luxury amenities, adding a game room or some“Feel-Good Furniture,” or wowing guests with the drama of some decorative new lighting—indoors or out.

In keeping with our Entertain at Home theme, I’d like to share the secret that attracts mygang to the comforts of home; and, like a magnet, keeps them coming back. This time-honored bait costs practically nothing. My crew has grown accustomed to and has beenparticipating in this pastime for years now (two to be exact). It is the ideal gather-round, get-together, number one reason we entertain at home: the old-fashioned murder mystery parlorgame! (Simply by definition the word parlor evokes images of a lavish and welcoming space;AKA a comfy room of your choice, lush and welcoming, ripe for lounging, dedicated toleisure only.)

Formerly played out most often in restaurants, the murder mystery game is catching on likewildfire in comfy parlors everywhere. It is popular with all age groups, and works with anynumber of players.

At first, my family members pooh-poohed the idea, but it didn’t take long to entice. The

key is in the presentation. Intrigue and mystery must surround it. Sending teaser emailsbeforehand about what to expect, as well as hints about the ‘crime’ that has taken place isonly the beginning of the fun. The murder mystery game comes complete with everythingyou need, including instructions for the party planner, suggested props and menu.

A far cry from the board game, Clue, the characters are not only assigned, butparticipants must dress the part and act it out. It’s exhilarating to watch family memberscompete with costumes and witness sibling rivalry flair. Each excels in trying to convince, connive, even lie (as the game suggests) to those present in order to win, which meanspinpointing the suspect, solving the crime by accusing and then identifying the murdersuspect accurately. My amateur actors outdo themselves every time!

Lots of laughter…way too much fun…ideal for linking generations…a great plan togather family, friends and long-lost relatives at your house.

When we say to grab the current issue of HOUSE & HOME, cozy up with your family, and opt to play a game or two, we mean it. Play hard, and laugh louder. Rejoice in themoment, celebrating the joy of one another.

Whether it is in your newly remodeled space enjoying a competitive game of Wii™ orbilliards, movie night in your state-of-the-art home theater, or a recently established familygame night, we challenge you to take that d-e-e-p breath, s-l-o-w down, raise the bar this year, and entertain at home.

Did H&H help you with a home makeover project? Did you accept the H&H challenge toentertain at home this holiday season? We love to hear from you! Email your success story [email protected] and let me know.

MMany people marvel at how beautiful homes look during the holidayseason with strings of lights hung everywhere, yet few take the timeto create similarly pleasing effects year-round. The use of outdooraccent lighting increases the pleasure that you and your guests takefrom viewing your home and its surroundings from various angles, while also improving the safety and security of your residence.

There are many different ways that outdoor lighting enhancesyour home. Most commonly, it provides an added security feature, and at the same time, delivers stunning illumination to your home.Exterior lighting adds drama and mystery when it is used to accentgardens, patios, decks, driveways and walkways. It can also be used tohighlight structural elements of a building or focus attention toparticular areas of the front, side or backyard.

Whether used to uplight, downlight, spotlight, shadow, silhouetteor moonlight (a mix of lighting intensities to create artificial lightingresembling moonlight), outdoor lighting is an attractive attention-grabber. It’s a great investment that adds character and charm to yourhome, offering a whole new area for you and your guests to enjoywhen the sun goes down.

All of the proper amenities that go along with a full-service barcan be found here—multiple refrigerators, wine cooler, dishwasher, bar sink—you name it. The materials used are rich and extraordi-nary: Brazilian rainforest granite, mahogany and oak to complementthe behind-the-bar brilliance of stainless steel, which is also evidentin the air ducts displayed outright across the ceiling.

An attention-getting media wall with six 60-inch plasma TVsserves as the ideal backdrop for the bar. It has a convenient built-indrink rail that is both decorative and functional.

A retreat like this wouldn’t be complete without a cozy loungearea. This one features a full-masonry fireplace and welcoming, over-stuffed leather furniture.

“Everything in the space has a nice flow to it,” says Taylor, “it allblends perfectly.”

After countless hours of traveling, grueling practices and hard-played games, Runyan and his buddies gather ’round his man caveand do what men do best: cheer their favorite sports teams on!

Amidst his sprawling 13,000-square foot home on secluded acreagein Mount Laurel, New Jersey, Jon Runyan has created every man’sdream. Jokingly named the Man Cave, this man space was the visionof Runyan, who took an active part in planning and designing this2,000-square foot game room wing, along with Donachy Architectsand Nuss Construction. This ultimate setting, specifically (and sup-posedly) reserved for males only, has become the ideal place forRunyan and his teammates to watch sports, shoot a game of pool, have a drink or just kick back and relax.

There are many extravagant features contained within this massiveman cave (which is by no means a cave at all—with its huge, over-sized, almost floor-to-ceiling windows, flooding sunlight and spectac-ular wooded view), but the highlight, for sure, is its expansive foot-ball-shaped bar that seats 25. Chris Caulder of Donachy Architectslaid out the initial concept, and cabinetmaker Robert Schultz ofCBR Woodworking developed the design details.

David Taylor, project manager for Nuss Construction, the com-pany responsible for Jon and Loretta Runyan’s custom-built dreamhome describes the center island of the bar: “It is shaped like a foot-ball, complete with inlaid lace on top.” The exterior of the bar isdone with pigskin leather. “It goes that extra step to really convey thefootball theme,” Taylor points out.

amazing creationsImpressive. Elegant. Affluent. Exclusive.By Margo Levin

Creating custom ironwork is a skill thatcomes naturally to Compass Ironworks’owner Amos Glick and his talented team ofartisans. They design and craft impressivestaircase railings, balconies, terraces, estategates and perimeter fencing throughout theDelaware Valley and beyond.

Compass Ironworks takes pride in thefine craftsmanship and detailed appoint-ments involved in welding each piece, andthis smart attention to detail is evident inthe remarkableresults.

“The process ofcreating custompieces starts with theinitial consultation,”Glick explains. “Firstand foremost, I askclients what kind ofvision they have, what type of charac-ter they want to comeacross, their likes anddislikes, and then Iwork from that.”

The knowledgeand expertise of theCompass Ironworksteam combined withits many years ofexperience working with affluent and exceptional high-endclients helps, too, with the decision-making process. By listeningcarefully to what clients say, they are able to offer advice andmake suggestions. Case in point: the elegant window balconiesand stair railings that Compass Ironworks created throughout thesprawling estate of Eagles’ star Jon Runyan and his wife, Loretta.Glick recalls that Loretta had specific ideas of what she likedand disliked, and chose various elements to complement oneanother, as well as the décor of each room that graces the viewof a railing.

Because of the unique intricacies of each Compass Ironworks’design and the fact that most of the work is done off-site, meas-urement must be precise. Every angle, slope, scrollwork andradius is particular to its own setting, so accuracy is imperative. The finished process includes a baked powder coat that isapplied electrostatically and is extremely durable.

When all is said and done and the ironwork is in place—bal-anced and in harmony within its setting—clients end up satisfiedand happy with the customized results. And the artisans atCompass Ironworks continue to take pride in creating outstand-ing and sophisticated pieces. It’s a win-win situation.

Compass Ironworks is located at 1406 W. Kings Highway, Gap,PA. For more information, to discuss your ideas, or to schedule afree consultation with owner Amos Glick, call 717-442-4544.

CChoosing color combinations is one of the most intimidating jobsfor the beginning decorator. To make the job easier, you can rely onthe interior designer's most important color tool: the color wheel. There are five basic color schemes built using this time-honoreddevice.

THE COLOR WHEEL

The standard color wheel includes high-intensity, pure colors. Whileyou may not use these exact vibrant colors in your home, theprinciples associated with this handy tool can help you create thedesired effect in your decorating.

There are 12 colors in a standard color wheel that are divided intothree designations. First there are the primary colors: pure red, blue, and yellow. Next we have the secondary colors, which are acombination of the primary colors and include: orange—createdfrom red and yellow; green—created from yellow and blue; andviolet—created from blue and red. Last, we have tertiary colors, which are a combination of a primary and a secondary color.Examples would be red-violet, blue-green, yellow orange and soforth.

PRIMARY COLORS: A STRONG FOUNDATION

For rooms that come off feeling strong and solid, a scheme ofprimary colors—red, blue and yellow—is an ideal choice. Each is apure color that can't be created by mixing other hues. Use them inpairs or combine all three; they work equally in country, traditionaland modern rooms.

A MONOCHROMATIC SCHEME

When we use tints and shades of the same color we are creating amonochromatic color scheme. The effect can be subtle and subduedwhen using a soft color, or dramatic and daring when opting for arich hue, like the deep violet shown in the bedroom picture in thisarticle.

To keep things interesting, the bedding uses slight variations inthe color family to bring drama to the bed. Lamps, windowtreatments, floor coverings and even the beautiful white lilies in thefloral arrangement add to the room’s warm, sophisticated feel.

TWO COLORS: A COMPLEMENTARY LOOK

Opposing colors are known as complementary colors; for example, purple and yellow, or red and green. These combinations will alwayscontain both warm and cool tones, contrasting with one another indrama and intensity in their differences.

It's best to let one of the strong hues dominate. Start by choosinga favorite color as your main color, then look directly across thewheel for an accent color. You can even split from the first color andchoose two opposing colors for accents. Opposites attract, so it is nosurprise that complementary colors are pleasing to the eye. >>>

Complementary colors enhance each other’s temperature, adding interest andenergy.

CONSECUTIVE COLORS: AN ANALOGOUS LOOK

Start by using consecutive colors on the color wheel. Create apleasing palette by using one color more prominently than the othertwo. The contemporary dining room pictured here uses a variety ofblues and greens to create a color scheme that is both soothing andsensational. The slice of colors that you select doesn't have to bestrictly warm-family or cool-family hues. It can span bothhemispheres. Start by choosing a favorite color as your main color, then look on either side of it.

If you like both colors, include them. If you only like the color onone side, select that one, and use the color adjacent to it as yourthird choice. Divide the palette into major and minor accent hues towork with the main color.

The true spirit of an analogous scheme is expressed best usingthree or more adjacent hues. Don't get carried away, though. Use nomore than half the colors on the wheel for your palette, unless youare doing a child's room in a rainbow of color.

TRIAD COLORS

The triad scheme includes any three colors equally spaced on thecolor wheel. You should use the colors in varied proportions. In myexample of a unique cottage-style room, a sophisticated twist toprimary colors includes a smoky blue, a complex yellow and a brickred.

These muted hues create a room that is colorful and livable, easilyincorporating rustic furnishings with modern accents. Note how thetraditional glazed pottery is used to accent one of the three colors inthis scheme.

DEVELOPING YOUR COLOR PREFERENCES AND PALETTE

Here are some thoughts to guide you to the right color palette. Startby considering the collection of items you plan to decorate around.Ask yourself some questions about your personal tastes. Do you wantto feel calm or energized in your new room? Are you drawn to colorsthat are warm or cool? Perhaps you are more comfortable withneutrals, whites, beiges and grays.

Next, find where your colors are on the color wheel. Decide if youprefer many colors or various shades and tints of a single color. Nowconsider how your color selections work with your existing elements. Finally, decide which of type of color scheme is most appealing toyou.

This basic color wheel knowledge can be a great help indecorating your space. At the end of the day, however, a surpriseaccent color or an unusual blend of fabrics may still be the elementthat will bring wow to your creation and make it personally yours.

Lighting the front facade highlights the architectural detail of this home tocreate a welcoming entrance.

PPeople spend half of their days in the dark, but you can still enjoyyour landscape all of the time. Outdoor lighting can helphomeowners get the most out of their landscape investment.Lighting serves two basic purposes when it comes to landscapingbecause it can be functional or beautiful.

Functional design includes lighting pathways for visibility, denoting steps for safety and brightening dark areas for security.House lights can be used to signal you are home and direct guests tothe door. In the backyard, lighting living spaces, such as outdoorkitchens, grills, pools and patios, will extend the hours of the daythey can be enjoyed. Since many people do not get home untilevening, these may be the most crucial hours for outdoor living.

Ornamental lighting can be used to draw attention to focal pointsin a garden, highlight the details of a stone wall or cast a shadowfrom an unusual plant or foliage. Positioning a light at the base of anobject is called uplighting. Using this method on large trees showsoff the texture of their bark and gives the canopy a soft glow. Castthe shadow of small trees on a blank wall or light them from behindto create a silhouette that highlights their interesting branchstructure. These forms of lighting are especially useful when there isno foliage. The effects add fall and winter interest to an otherwiseordinary landscape.

Mounting lights high in trees can create a moonlight effect thatcan be used to light a path below. Paths can also be illuminated with

Light is important to a landscape.Plants need it to grow, we bask in itto tan and avoid it when we want tokeep cool. But that is only half of thestory. Even after the sun sets, lightplays an important role in alandscape. By Sharon A. Shaw

the light reflected from all types of decorative lighting. Evenfunctional lighting can be designed to be pleasing. An effectivelighting plan should offer adequate coverage for a space by using avariety of lighting techniques that create interest.

There are two primary methods of lighting: low voltage and linevoltage. Low-voltage lights do not require installation by a licensedelectrician. A transformer is necessary to convert the current and thisshould be disguised in the landscape. The wires can be burieddirectly in the ground, making them easier to install around anexisting landscape. Since the low voltage carried in the wires isweaker, the lights are not as bright. Line-voltage lights are run off ofthe same voltage as the lights in a home, so they are more intenseand mounted more securely than low-voltage lights. They are alsomore expensive since a licensed electrician is required to connectthem to existing electrical lines.

Either can be operated with a switch, timer, photocell or acombination of the two. Timers trigger the lights to come on at aspecified time and turn off after a determined length of time. Aphotocell detects light levels and activates the lights when these levelsare reached. By changing the wattage of the bulbs used in eachfixture, the intensity of the light can also be altered. A knowledgeabledesigner can determine the number of fixtures, volts and wattsneeded for a well-balanced lighting plan.

No matter which installation method you choose, it's important toselect high-quality fixtures. Brass and cast aluminum are bothdurable and available in a variety of finishes. Style is a highlypersonal preference and there are many options available, but alwaysput function first and select fixtures that cast an appropriate beam oflight.

With a well-designed plan to light the way, a homeowner'slandscaping will become more useful and beautiful during the nightand throughout the year.

basement transformation

SScott and Jeanine Medrow had two simple goals going into the 90-day commitment of refinishing the basement of their Yardley home.“We wanted the project to end on time and to finish the basementwithin our decided budget,” says Scott. Theoretically, however, modest expectations can be hard to fulfill in the business of homeremodeling.

Rather than quickly or blindly committing to one contractor, thecouple took a smart and vigilant step in the project’s beginning: theyinterviewed a handful of contractors who seemed qualified to do thejob. Not one company in the first round of meetings won thecouple’s confidence or stood out as extraordinary. After consultingwith friends and neighbors, one common name began to stand outand came highly recommended. It was Rick Osborne of Osborne

Builders. Osborne Builders’ solid

reputation was repeatedlymentioned for a variety of reasons:attention to detail, responsivenessand Osborne’s ability to listen tocustomers’ wants and needs andthen direct them accordingly.Upon meeting Osborne, Scottrecalls him as being “by far themost prompt, well-prepared andaccurate in his bids.” Impressedwith Osborne Builders, confidentwith their decision and supportedwith endorsements from friends, the Medrows got started onmaking their basement a

personalized space that the wholefamily could enjoy.

MAKING VIRTUAL A REALITY

Osborne is a precise man who takes pride in his business and work.“My company is in its sixth generation of building and firstgeneration of remodeling,” he explains. Though boasting would beeasy considering his experience and history, Osborne proves hissincere intention to please by admitting that the biggest challenge of

this particular refinishing project was making the space work to meetall of the Medrows’ intentions and plans for using the new area.

Thanks to some nifty technology, the couple’s ideas could bedeveloped, set up, tinkered with and projected—all before pickingup a single tool. Because of Osborne’s background of starting topound a hammer onto a nail at the ripe young age of nine, he isexperienced and familiar with every aspect of construction and whatgoes into it.

“There’s nothing like hands-on experience when it comes tobuilding and working with your hands,” Osborne points out. “I’vebeen there, done that, so I have the skill and expertise not only toplan, estimate and determine a timeline, but I can also offersuggestions on materials and products that will work well forindividual projects and/or unusual circumstances.”

Osborne uses a program that provides a virtual 3-D blueprint ofthe basement, making the final project look slightly more tangibleearly in the venture. He mixed the Medrows’ general ideas with hisprofessional input and presented the plan on his laptop. Scott saysthis precise methodology “helped us understand our vision” of whatthe future basement would look like.

And because codes and regulations are constantly changing,Osborne also makes it a point to check out townshiprules/laws/codes each month, so there are no surprises or additionalcosts for homeowners. Going the extra mile like this is what makesRick Osborne continue to maintain high standards of quality, dependability and service. >>>

BREAKING IT DOWN

A six-section layout quickly jumped from computer to construction. The Osborne team that worked on the job included two plumbers, twoelectricians and five carpenters. Osborne called upon his most trustedand loyal team members, some of which he has worked with for overseventeen years.

In addition to lots of storage space, an airy living room and adjacentwet bar section are large parts of the refinish. The living roomincorporates an inviting fireplace, flat screen television, overstuffedsofas and game tables—the ideal setting for both unwinding andentertaining. When asked his favorite part, Scott answers: “The bararea turned out best, in my opinion.” Its roomy cabinetry and rich, heavy stools create a classy atmosphere for family and friends to gatherand sip their favorite cocktails.

A unique media room is also part of the Medrows’ new basement—pre-wired, soundproofed and ready for the visual and soundequipment. The Medrows added plush chairs with cupholders and aprojector for a stylish update to traditional movie viewing.

Additionally, the gym area—outfitted with weight apparatus, elliptical machine and a treadmill—not only makes working out apleasure but saves time and membership fees. Key tools in keeping thefamily active and healthy are just a convenient trip downstairs.

While many basements include a half-bath for convenience, aunique part of the Medrows’ new basement is the inclusion of a fullbath with steam shower. A soothing treat after a strenuous day orworkout, the Medrow children are especially fond of this state-of-the-art shower.

AT THE END OF THE DAY

What do I have to say about Osborne Builders? Scott answers simply:“The company does quality work, and on time. We’re happy with theoutcome. Osborne did a great job.”

The family is delighted with their finished basement. What Scottfinds comforting and appreciates most is the project follow-upconducted by the company. He says Osborne has handled any post-construction questions or problems immediately. The solace of a jobwell-done ensures a top-notch basement that this family will utilize andenjoy for years to come.

Osborne Builders is located in Doylestown and is experienced in buildingstate-of-the-art basements, additions, and even entire houses. For moreinformation, visit the company’s website at www.osbornebuilders.net or call215-766-3006.

basement finale

WWhen it comes to the final product, the add-ons available for yournewly finished basement run the gamut. Homeowners can customizetheir basement, making it truly one-of-a-kind. By adding details withthe right lighting, unique décor and accessories that define specialtyareas, such as playrooms, theater rooms or gyms, arriving at this finalphase is the fun part.

When completing a basement, homeowners should consider whatdesign options, materials and colors look best in their new space, saysLinda Sinisi, designer, About Space LLC. “A finished basement cancarry the same theme as the rest of the house, or it can make anentirely new style statement!”

Your new basement can serve almost any purpose—and almostanything you dream up, the experts can build. “It all comes down towhat the customer wants, and what they’ll be using the space for,”says Allyn Harth, CEO, Harth Builders. “One basement wecompleted had a separate bar area, full bath, TV area, office, anexercise room that included mirrors and a ballet bar, and even a

complete hometheater set-up with aplatform for thetheater seats. This isan example of thehigh-end buthomeowners have theoption to add any ofthese types ofdetails.”

ADDING AMBIANCEOne of the easiest

ways to create a special look in your finished basement is to select theright lighting. Lighting can make a big difference in any room, andthe basement is no exception. One of the most popular options isoverhead recessed lighting on a dimmer.

“We definitely do a lot of recessed lighting,” says Brian Zeldes, owner, BKZ Contractors, Inc. “We also do specialty lighting, depending on the type of area, such as a media room. Cove lightingand controlled lighting, usually on a dimmer switch, can addambiance to the space.”

Brad Boucher, owner of Spacements, Inc., agrees: “Accent orspecialty lighting is always a nice addition to set off theater areas, bars, or other special areas of the basement. Unique lighting can alsoserve to separate or highlight a bar or a piece of artwork. “This canbe achieved with options, such as wall sconces or pendant lights. In-cabinet lighting for bar areas is also a nice touch,” Boucher adds.

Another way to create a special effect in your basement is to add afireplace, one of the latest trends in finished basements. It’s not onlya great source of heat, but is also aesthetically pleasing, says KarlClaus, owner, The Woodburners. The smartest choice for yourbasement? A gas fireplace. Wood-burning fireplaces can be installed, but because of ventilation issues and other safety concerns, gas is abetter choice.

“It’s also the most convenient,” says Claus, who is installing a gasfireplace in his own newly finished basement, which will be thespace’s only heat source. “You can put it on a thermostat or a switchand it becomes instantaneous. And when you’re done using it, youcan just shut it right off.”

If you don’t install a fireplace, you still may need a supplementalheat source, says Harth. “The basement temperature is generally notcomfortable for spending extended time down there during thecolder months,” he explains. “Supplemental heat can be suppliedwith electric baseboard or perhaps even a small heat pump or gasfurnace. You generally don’t need extra cooling in the summer, butit’s likely you’ll need additional heat for the winter.”

ADDITIONAL ACCENTSWhen it comes to your ceiling, you don’t have to settle for somethingstandard. Why not opt for a ceiling that will add character to yourspace? Armstrong’s Metallaire decorative metal ceiling tiles are a great

choice for achieving a unique, sophisticated ceiling treatment foryour new basement. The tiles add texture and come in a choice of 12patterns. The finished product can be anything from casual and cozyto formal and luxurious—depending on your personal taste andstyle. This line allows you to mix and match patterns and finishes tocreate a unique look or even paint the Metallaire white-finished tilesto match your décor.

Metallaire lay-in panels come in 2 feet by 2 feet sizes and thecompany offers a color-coordinating grid. They can be suspendedfrom the floor joists similar to a traditional suspended ceiling. The 2by 2 panels still allow for access to any piping or systems above. Youcan get a high-end look with plenty of character and still receive thebenefits of the suspended ceiling. Another plus? Metal naturallyprevents odor- and stain-causing mold and mildew.

Armstrong’s Woodhaven product line is also popular withcustomers. Armstrong has enhanced the application of this line andnow recommends two finishes specifically for wainscoting andbacksplashes. Both Painted White and Beadboard open up newpossibilities for room design, which can be further expanded bycustom painting these planks to suit any décor. “The wall applicationis a natural extension of WoodHaven, and we designed the productin response to consumer interest in a cost-effective plank andbeadboard texture for walls,” says Rich Wiley, associate marketingmanager, Armstrong Residential Ceilings. “Our WoodHavenbacksplash and wainscoting provide an affordable update.”

BATH OPTIONSThe addition of a bathroom to your basement is another populartrend. If you plan on spending a lot of time in your newly finishedspace, or want to entertain guests, it makes sense to have at least apowder room installed. “Most people want a basic powder room, butthere are homeowners who want a full bath,” says Harth. “If thehomeowners have a walk-out basement and a pool outside, theyoften like having a shower installed in their basement so people can

come right in and shower off.”There is no reason to feel limited in what you can do with a

basement bathroom. You can have all the amenities you wouldinclude in an upstairs bathroom. Boucher says that some of hisclients even want more than just a basic shower. “Turning a standardstall shower into a steam shower can be good for resale value, andalso add a nice luxury for the homeowners, especially if they haveadded a gym to their basement,” he says.

No matter which details you choose for your newly finishedbasement, adding the right accents to reflect your personality and

CotY award project

AAfter having their kitchen and den remodeled in their 1979 two-story Colonial-style home in Phoenixville, homeowners Tony andAnne Marie Massaro were not happy with how the lighting, especially in the den, had turned out.

The Massaros loved their newly renovated den, but they had issueswith the lighting that created a distraction in the brand new plasmaTV they had just purchased. They could not watch television withthe lights on because of the glare that was evident on the screen.

Upon recommendation from their contractor, they came to WesCarver, licensed master electrician and owner of Wes CarverElectrical Contracting, Inc., to tackle the project of enhancing andrectifying the lighting problems that the Massaros were experiencing.

For his efforts in this project, Carver won a 2008 Contractor ofthe Year (CotY) Award for Residential Lighting: Lighting andLighting Control from the Bucks-Mont National Association of theRemodeling Industry (NARI).

Associates, Wes Carver Electrical Contracting, Inc., was responsiblefor the design and installation of the lighting and its control system.

Because proper lighting plays an important part in any project, finding the perfect solution was imperative. According to Carver, theexisting recessed lights were not positioned properly in the room, which caused the terrible glare. The fact that the bulbs were alsoobtrusive and unattractive added to the problem.

Carver worked with the Massaros to create the best solution totheir lighting problems. “Wes was so creative with the ideas hebrought to the table,” Anne Marie says. “It was hard because he >>>

“In general, the best projects for both our company and the clientresult when clients are receptive to our ideas and put their trust in us.That means realizing that our years of experience will deliver a greatfinished product that they will enjoy,” Carver says.

LIGHTING THE WAY

Although the main goal of this project was to eliminate the glare thatthe current lighting was causing on the television, the Massarosdecided to take this opportunity to include additional accentlighting, which would add a more pleasing atmosphere to the room.

To address these issues, Carver came up with a new plan for thelighting. “We used smaller lights with a special type of reflector trimto virtually eliminate the glare and make the lights disappear into theceiling,” Carver says. The black alzak reflector trims Carver used notonly removed the glare on the television screen, but also throughoutthe room. Accent lights were added for the built-in shelves and tohighlight artwork on the walls. The installation of subtle and tasklow-voltage accent lighting in the bar area helped create a morecomfortable and relaxed environment overall.

By installing a lighting control for the room, the lights are nowcontrolled by recalling simple lighting scenes based on the differentways the Massaros will use the room. Scenes can be turned on andoff from the wall control or through the remote for the mediasystem.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS

In the three days it took to complete the lighting renovation, the dentransformed into the space that the Massaros initially wanted.

“While we have to give credit to our designer who laid out theroom in the first place, Wes’ work truly enhanced the room,” saysAnne Marie. “The new lighting also shows off the woodwork andenhances the entire room. It’s fabulous.”

“We always love it when we can make a dramatic difference to ourclients’ homes,” says Carver. “A highlight for us was when we turnedthe lights on for the first time and got the initial reaction from theMassaros.”

Tony has only good things to say about Carver. “You absolutelycan count on him 100 percent to show up when he is supposed to.His scheduling is always what he says it is going to be. And that’simportant because we’ve run into a lot of contractors who say theyare going to start and then don’t show up. That has never happenedwith Wes.”

The Massaros were also awed by Carver’s true professionalism.“There were no hidden costs. Wes gave us the estimate and it waswhat it was.” The couple was impressed with Carver’s team as well.“They were extremely meticulous and always cleaned up. We neverrealized they were here.”

“We just love him; we’re really big fans of him,” Tony and AnneMarie agree, and have since worked with Carver on other projectsthroughout their home.

In the end everyone won. The Massaros not only got the lightingthat they originally wanted, they got a whole new look for the room. And Carver remains proud of the award he won, pleased withanother satisfied customer.

get your game on

HHave you have ever thought how much fun it would be to have agame room in your own home? Then, what’s stopping you? Today’sgame rooms are as unique as each homeowner. A game room can beas simple as adding a card table to an area in your basement, or ascomplex as designing an entire entertainment space.

“No matter which approach you take, the perfect game roommust offer a comfortable setting for family and friends,” says AudraDelConte, co-owner, Royal Billiard and Recreation, Inc.

GAME TIMEIf your idea of the ideal game room includes plenty of entertainment, consider the addition of a billiards table. DelConte says that abilliards table is often the center of most homeowners’ game rooms.

“Billiards is the ultimate social sport in the home,” she says. “Allages—from younger children to their grandparents—can play. Manyof our customers tell us they are purchasing their table to offer their

entertainment the whole familycan enjoy

Homeowners who have the budget are opting to recreate the movie-going experience in their own home. It’s the latest game room trend. Shown is a theater roomcreated and designed by Osborne Builders.

children, mainly teenagers, a reason to bring friends into their home.Parents like to know where their kids are, and what is better thanhaving them at home?”

Today’s homeowners don’t just want a standard table, they wantsomething that nobody else has. “People are spending more time tocreate their own unique pool tables,” says DelConte. “We have aBuild Your Own Table program that allows customers to sit downand choose style, woods, finish, leg styles, rail sights, cloth color andpockets. Most pool tables are considered heirloom furniture and willbe passed along for future generations. For this reason, our customerswant something they have had a hand in creating. We have a servicedepartment that is constantly moving pool tables from parents’homes into the homes of their children.”

Homeowners are also considering the addition of a game table totheir entertainment space. “A pub table, or a game table that can beused for casual eating or playing games, is a popular choice,” saysDelConte. “A bar-height pub table in a large room offers a cozy andmore intimate feel to the space.”

Theater rooms have also become very popular, adds RickOsborne, owner, Osborne Builders. “These can be as elaborate as thehomeowner wants,” he says. “They can include everything fromsoundproof walls to a projection screen with all the latest electronicsto theater-style seating.”

The right furniture for your theater room or to house yourelectronics in the game room is also important. Cabinets for big screen TVs and entire wall systems that store entertainmentequipment all in one location are some of Groff ’s UnpaintedFurnishings most popular offerings, says Amanda Groff, co-owner.

But the rise in popularity of flat screens has changed the size andshape of the furniture homeowners are seeking.

“We can design and build unique entertainment units,” says TreyHalkett, owner, Halkett Woodworking. “Built-ins in many styles can

be created to houseelectronics and to displayfamily photos andmemorabilia. Expertcraftsmanship and thefinest materials are used tocreate elegant pieces.”

AT THE BARAdding a bar to your gameroom gives guests a placeto sit and enjoy snacks anddrinks. “A bar is a placewhere people gather,” saysGeorge Robert Platt,

owner of George Robert Platt, Artisans of Freestanding and FittedFurniture. “Wherever you put a bar in your home, you can guaranteethere will be people there, and if you add a TV, the bar will be full allthe time.”

Platt makes custom bars for his clients, so every bar is unique.“Basically, anything you want out of wood, we can make,” he says.“It all depends on the person’s style. We can go from the pub look toa very elegant bar—or even create one of the U-shaped bars you seeat a tavern. Whatever the customer wants, we can design and create.”

Bars can also be themed, according to Halkett. “We’ve doneeverything from a nautical theme to a sports theme,” he explains.“Or it can just be traditional, made of mostly wood, perhaps with astone top. We can create whatever style the homeowner wants.”

Homeowners can get as high-end as they choose with theircustom creation. Platt created one bar made from solid mahogany, which he dedicated to his father who passed away while helping himwork on it. “This bar has everything you could need, including awine rack, a refrigerator, sinks and more,” he says. “I’ve also workedon bars where the homeowner wanted a microwave, toaster oven, small fridge, dishwasher and double pull-out trash units.”

Some homeowners are also requesting full wine cellars. “We dovery upscale wine cellars, some of which even have a space that canbe used as a tasting room,” Halkett says. “It’s a place where friendsand family can relax and sip some good wine.”
