nows the time to prepare for spring and summer funSpring is just around the corner. With that thought in mind, we present our Annual Landscape, Pool & Patio directory in this issue. It includes a listing of area retailers who offer all types of products to enhance the outdoors, such as pools, ponds, decks, patios, spas, fencing, grills and outdoor furniture and dcor. Youll want to turn to this section right away if any outdoor projects are on your horizon or save it for future reference if you plan to embark on such endeavors down the road. This edition also features articles filled with ideas for sprucing up your outdoors. Consider putting a pond or water garden in your backyard and it will likely become a gathering place not only for your family, but also for birds, butterflies, frogs and fish. Although backyard ponds can be small, sometimes no larger than 3 to 4 feet in diameter, they loom large when it comes to being a natural and scenic attraction in your landscape. Read more in, The Water Element.

If youre pondering how to decorate your outdoor living space, look no further than your interior design, writes Debra McGaughey, in For a Stylish Garden, Take Interior Design Concepts Outdoors. The days of vine-covered trellises with rows of seemingly haphazardly planted native plants no longer symbolize the height of gardening sophistication. These days, gardening dcor is really a capsulation of your indoor decorating scheme, whether its minimalist furnishings with smooth metal finishes or soft, comfortable seating that bespeaks luxury and comfort. March is a great time to begin outdoor projects, so you can enjoy them by the time summer is in full swing! Wed like to feature your beautiful outdoor living space in an upcoming issue. www.ihatepaint.comAs Winter is finally winding down and we look forward to the days growing longer and warmer, homeowners have the perfect opportunity to assess the exterior of their homes. Does Your Home Need a Facelift? If youve decided the exterior of your home is in need of a facelift, the premier option to consider is a spray on coating applied by Final Coat Exteriors. Before permanent coatings were available, consumers had the choice of either paint or vinyl/aluminum siding for their homes. Paint, while flexible and affordable, is a temporary solution to a perpetual maintenance problem. In recent years, homeowners are requiring reapplication after just three to five years. While paint used to last up to ten years, the EPA has clamped down removing lead, mercury and other heavy metals, leaving a safer environment for our children, but higher maintenance costs for our homes. Vinyl, on the other hand, offers a more permanent solution, but comes in limited choices and often gaps, fades or becomes a nesting ground for insects and other pests. In addition, vinyl cannot be used to cover all exterior surfaces, including handrails, spindles and posts. Blends the Appearance of Fresh Paint with the Durability of Vinyl Siding It took years to bring this technology to the homeowner community, but a new industry is here to give the homeowner a better choice. Tex-Cote, which has applied its product to major corporations, government buildings and historical monuments since 1961, has the ability to meld the appearance of fresh paint and the durability of vinyl siding. It combines resins, polymers, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to form a coating 10-20 times thicker than paint, is environmentally friendly and meets or exceeds all EPA standards. Final Coat Exteriors, the exclusive TexCote dealer for the state of New Jersey, offers the coating in 1,500 colors in both smooth and textured for those who want a stucco or grainy look. Guarantees and Special Training Final Coat Exteriors, New Jersey and Pennsylvanias authorized Tex-Cote dealer, is here to help homeowners Stop Painting Forever. TexCote, guarantees its products will not blister, chip, flake or fade and backs up the promise with a limited lifetime warranty on product and labor. Since Carlton Pools opened in 1973, this second-generation family-owned company has enriched countless families with in-ground pool scape environments. In Union, NJ, it was old-fashioned word of mouth that led Carlton Pools to provide their services to three different families in the same neighborhood. Their latest project in the area involved working with an outside landscaping firm to cre-

ate a specialized backyard with a one-of-a-kind pool. To bring their vision of an ideal backyard to reality, the Witte family first turned to a landscape designer from Hidden Valley Nursery Inc., of Stockton, NJ. Jim and Jacqueline Witte shared their dream of a backyard that would precisely fit their needs with the architect. At the consultation, the Wittes decided on a patio, a kidney-shaped pool and a

spa. The Wittes also wanted to leave plenty of grassy areas for football and baseball games and other outdoor fun for their children. PLANNING THE PERFECT POOL SCAPE Next, the couple called on Carlton Pools to discuss pool options. They consulted with a landscape architect first, which doesnt necessarily have to be the case, but it is helpful in the process, says Christopher Keiser, design consultant, Carlton Pools. Keiser, as well as other Carlton Pools staff, was immediately faced with challenges as spacing proved to be an issue for the blue print design. A perfect backyard for the Witte family had to include a patio, in-ground pool and ample space for their children to play. Changes to the initial design proved unavoidable. Keiser worked with the couple and landscape architect to merge the preliminary idea into a functioning and plausible one. Their goal was to create a seamless transition from the house to the pool.

CREATING A SOLUTION The new design situated the pool on the side of the house, perpendicular instead of the usual place, the back middle of a backyard. The new location left plenty of green space for the family, but the design quickly came to a halt as a variance from the township was needed for the radically uncommon position of the pool. Thankfully, the township granted the request and con-

The la jolla pool installed was 3feet-6-inches to 6-feet deep, with bluestone and travertine decking. To remain within the Wittes budget, Carlton Pools limited the materials to a desirable amount as the family chose to spend their budgeted dollars on higher-grade materials instead of a larger pool or patio. The design consultant also recommended an oval-shaped spa.

stone facing. Other features for the pool and spa included a saltwater chlorinator, solar plaster and handheld computer system, which provides effortless controls to pool functions such as temperature, lighting and spa. Carlton Pools also bestowed the Wittes with a state-of-the-art debris removal system. BETTER RESULTS TOGETHER Perhaps other companies working with an outside landscaping firm would have found it to be an arduous process, but Carlton Pools looked at the project as an opportunity to provide the client with a great experience and superior product. As Carlton Pools design consultant for the past 6 years, Keiser proudly boasted the joint effort and standing relationships he and the company maintain with numerous landscape firms. The landscape company was very much involved. We love to do everything we can and weve got resources available to do whatever you ask us to do, but >>>

A perfect backyard for the Witte family had to include a patio, in-ground pool and ample space for their children to play.struction could begin. In the new plan, Keiser suggested a la jolla pool, a variation of the kidney-shaped pool that was originally considered. There is an accent to it on the one side and its not just your plain kidney shape, its got a little character to it, says Keiser. We took the inside radius of the la jolla pool and decided to make it into an oval spa so it fits better. Its a little bit larger, too, so it can fit more people and we raised the spa on the opposite side of the pool from the house so it doubled as a water feature, explains Keiser. The oval spa was completed with field-

Carlton Pools looked at the project as an opportunity to provide the client with a great experience and superior product.we are also open to working with qualified and competent landscape firms who can do things like stone work and stone patios, says Keiser. Carlton Pools is one of the largest independent pool builders in the area, with nine locations and five pool parks throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Put a pond or water garden in your backyard and it will likely become a gathering place not only for your family, but also for birds, butterflies, frogs and fish. Although backyard ponds can be small, sometimes no larger than 3 to 4 feet in diameter, they loom large when it comes to being a natural and scenic attraction in your landscape. Why build a pond? It creates a backyard oasis with soothing sounds and the therapeutic beauty of watching fish swim about. Its Ponds are low maintenance if you keep their ecosystems in balance. Fish eat insect larvae, plants act as natural filters and water nourishes

the fish and plants. You need all of these components for it to remain healthy. If you set it up properly, it maintains itself with only minimal tweaking each month. POSITIVE PLANTS When establishing plants, the experts at the U.S. Department of Agriculture suggest you consider a mixture of emergent, submergent and floating species. Emergent plants have their roots in the water, but the shoots are above water. They can be added to the margins of ponds as well. Types include cattails, arrowhead and water lilies. Submergent species are plants

that remain underwater, such as elodea. They are often used as oxygenators, that is, they remove carbon dioxide from the water and add oxygen. These plants are essential in most ponds to keep the water clear. Finally, we have floating species,

i.e., plants that are not anchored in ponds. Types of these species include duckweed, water lettuce and water hyacinth. While not as effective as oxygenators, these plants help keep the water clear by limiting the amount of sunlight

safety firstSince theyre usually not as deep as swimming pools, ponds dont fall under swimming pool guidelines. The most important safety rule is to treat your pond like a swimming pool. Its important to train children to stay away from them. Otherwise, enjoy your water feature more fully by following these simple rules from the U.S. Department of Agriculture: Check local safety ordinances to determine if a fence is required for the specific depth and size of your pond. Check local building ordinances for depth and safety restrictions and permits. Equip outdoor outlets with a ground fault circuit interrupter.

the sound of waterWhat sound do you want? Some people just want the sound of water i.e., subtle, soft, soothing, gurgling, trickling, noisy and bubbling. To achieve the desired goal, pure water might be used without the addition of plants or animals. In this process, different devices might be incorporated that help water make different sounds. The end effect is water bouncing down the face of rock, falling out of copper scuppers or descending as a sheer sheet of liquid. Add lights at nighttime and water truly becomes the star of your yard.

escape with a breathtaking landscapelandscaping helps homeowners enjoy outdoor living spaces to the fullestBy Lauren Fritsky

WWhen many people picture residential landscaping, they envision identical shrubs lining the front of a home. But more and more, homeowners are seeking shaped and sculpted shrubbery in other areas of the property. Outdoor living spaces located in the backyard, such as decks, firepits and even family rooms, need landscaping, too.Top: This tree landscape design by Garrett Churchill Inc. adds peace and privacy to a backyard pool. says Sina Cristinzio, owner, Green Acres Nursery and Garden Center. Homeowners are taking sanctuary in their backyards. Adding trees, shrubs and hardscaping allows them to transform their backyards into tranquil places to come home to. Not everyone wants to travel thousands of miles to get away: some prefer to vacation in their own backyards. For that reason, homeowners turn to outdoor dining areas and dens in which to relax and entertain. Areas that extend the interior liv-

And while many homeowners opt for traditional shrubs or trees, some go for more exotic elements. Many clients desire a pond or water feature to add the tranquil sound of running water to the landscape. It is also an excellent way to buffer outside noise from neighbors and traffic, says Andy Sykes, president, Garrett Churchill Inc. Achieving these outdoor extensions of indoor living spaces often involves fusing landscape and hardscape. Hardscape refers to the nonplant elements of landscape and includes materials such as concrete, brick, stone or wood. Patios, decks and walkways are hardscape. This spring season, the need for hardscaping is in high demand. Hardscaping allows homeowners to include garden paths lined with brick or fountains and ponds surrounded with stone. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? Landscaping provides a plethora of plant and material options. But not every selection will look right with every house or property. There are several aspects to consider when determining the type of landscape that fits best. I try to design a project that meets my clients needs by listening carefully to their ideas and observing their interior designs and noting environmental conditions, says Welsh. First, clients must decide which textures, styles and types of plants they prefer, says Stenger. Considering >>>

the view of the garden from entryways and areas inside the home is also critical. House style and scale must also be taken into account. An Asian garden with large plant materials would look out of place with a small rancher, he explains. Instead, build a smaller cottage or contemporary type garden. Formal and symmetrical homes call for landscaping that shares similar qualities, says Sykes. English cottage style gardens are a wonderful example of this, where there may be a boxwood hedge or just two symmetrical plants on either side of the front door with a mix of shrubs, perennials and annuals to round out the planting, he says. In general, contemporary and craftsman style architecture lend

themselves to a more natural, less structured landscape that may include multiple stem trees, such as river birch, grouped with shrubs and ornamental grasses. Lighting can bring out the vibrancy of plants at night, Sykes adds. Low-voltage systems such as multiple voltage output transformers, long-life halogen lamps and solid metal fixtures are common. MAINTAINING A LOOK If you are not a gardener or dont want to hire someone to maintain a landscape, we always recommend you keep it as simple as possible, Sykes says. A landscape plan does not have to be elaborate in order to enhance a homes value and, quite frankly, an unmaintained, elaborate landscape

NATURAL STONE

the timeless beauty and classic appeal of natural stoneBy Susan I. Shiber terraced patios. With natural products, beauty is lasting and maintenance is minimal. Delaware Quarries, a 60-year-old family-owned company, specializes in landscape boulders, decorative gravel, garden steppers, treads, sills and flagstone. We offer stone products from 1 to 8 inches that will outlast our great-great-great-grandchildren, says Cannell. NATURES MENU Other suggestions for outdoor projects are travertine, limestone, sandstone and slate. Travertine is a type of limestone and one of the most popular for exterior wall cladding, paving, statuary and curbing. Limestone is widely used as a building stone because of its availability and ease of handling. It is an excellent choice for wall cladding and paving. In addition, slate and sandstone are often selected as pavers. Sandstone is preferred for fireplace facings, chimneys, garden walls, patio benches and pool sides. Melissa Palacios, office manager, Euro Italia Stone, is passionate when it comes to using travertine. It is 100 percent natural stone with no metal content, she says. You can walk barefoot on the surface without feeling any heat. Euro Italia Stone imports exotic travertine and marble from a 75-yearold quarry in Tivoli. The companys pavers and architectural accent pieces complement pool coping, step treads, wall veneers, columns and fountains. We can take travertine to various levels, says Palacios. People are looking for bigger outdoor landscapes and are willing to spend more money to showcase magnificent natural stone. Travertine, marble and limestone were used since before the Roman Empire to build cities, monuments, sculptures and even roads, she adds. You can still find these cities and mon>>>

Talk to anyone in the home improvement industry and they will tell you that families are staying home more. Rather than buying new construction to create their dreams, many opt to add pizzazz to present dwellings. Frequently, this oomph blooms outdoors. Exterior paving is no longer limited to patios, pool surrounds and walkways. Entertainment centers, full-service kitchens and elaborate waterscapes are among todays trendsetters. Using natural stone for these settings provides comfort, distinction and cachet. California and Florida were the first regions to bring the inside out, says George Cannell, director of sales, Delaware Quarries. This is a wonderful way to enjoy family and friends without sitting in front of a TV. Were doing stone alcoves topped with permanent seating; conversation areas complete with fireplaces, pool or sunroom integrations; and

Ask family, friends and neighbors for referrals and call local stone/tile suppliers for recommendations. 3. Identify several contractors and schedule appointments for estimates. uments throughout Europe. Ancient materials for modern applications bring the beauty of the old world to your home. For example, Euro Italia Stone produces larger pieces for curved steps. If someone wants rounded or bull-nose edges, we cut, size and shape the stone, says Palacios. There are so many colors, design opportunities and depths with travertine. It will last forever and rarely needs maintenance or replacement. Each piece is unique and different. A yard becomes a work of art, she says. Matthew Drobenak, general manager, Master Granite, Marble and Tile, refers to architectural art when discussing the attributes of natural materials. He says, The Colosseum was travertine and other monuments and sculptural masterpieces are carved from stone. All stand the test of time. Today, natural stone products take on that same character. They harmonize with the environment and gain character as they age. He suggests that limestone and granite are excellent products for pool coping and that slate walkways look very clean. A recent Master Granite pool surround was finished in 3-foot by 6-foot limestone slabs with matching grout. We buffed and polished the surface with a floor refinishing machine and it looks like one solid piece of exterior floor, says Drobenak. Proper Installation and Care Count Drobenak says that natural stone projects will retain their quality if installa-

tion is handled by experienced professionals. You need a good solid foundation and all prep work must be correct. With suitable maintenance, natural stone will endure throughout lifetimes, adds James Freeman, director of sales and marketing, Colonial Marble and Granite. The company frequently designs granite tabletops and window sills to match patios. It is recognized for state-of-the-art technology applied to natures finest dimensional stone. You spend your money effectively when you choose natural building products, says Freeman. They are durable, weather-resistant and cant compare with man-made products when it comes to style and aesthetics. Ann Marie DiTomaso, owner and marketing manager, Stone Masters, agrees. Theres nothing like granite for outdoors, she says. We use it to clad the front of bars, and on counters and table tops, but dont try it on walkways. Its slippery and too costly for expansive areas. Slate would be my recommendation. DiTomaso is particularly proud of a spacious patio project her company completed that incorporated two barbecue grills, a fireplace and kitchen center. A cutout in the stone allows for the addition of a refrigerator. Tones of gold and irregular stone patterns add charm and warmth reminiscent of a rustic European village.H&H

How many times have you tried to enjoy a meal outdoors only to have it interrupted by buzzing mosquitoes or pesky flies? Enjoying the fresh air is nice, but the thought of dealing with bugs may keep you indoors. And while screens may be an option, many homeowners are turned off by the idea of adding screening to their porches or doors

because it will obstruct beautiful views. Luckily, they dont have to. Installing a Phantom Screen can give you bug-free access to the outdoors without blocking views. For Lois Armbrecht and husband, Ross, having a Phantom Screen installed was the perfect addition to their home. Ive always loved screened

Armbrecht. We have lovely woods and a small stream. THE CONVENIENCE FACTOR Convenience is another reason many homeowners opt for a Phantom Screen. Thats why Kathy Maculaitis, of Glen Mills, had one installed. She remembered from her last home how convenient it was to have a Phantom Screen and decided she wanted another. Its a lot easier when carrying things in and out of the door when you dont have to hold a screen door open, she says. Would you rather have to open one door or

porches, but my husband loves the open views, she explains. So this was a nice compromise for us. The screens are very attractive. You can barely see them, and you can also put them away at the press of a button. This is one of the special features that make these screens so appealing. Phantom Screens easily roll into their protective casings when they are not in use. WHEN THE BUGS COME OUT Armbrecht typically uses the screens at night, so she can enjoy dinner outdoors without having to constantly swat at bugs. I often pull them out around 5 p.m. before the bugs start to gather for the evening, she says. My husband frequently works late, so we may not get outside to eat dinner until after 7 p.m. But when we put on the porch lights and head out there for dinner, there are no bugs. It has allowed us to eat outside a lot more. Many customers decide to have the screens installed for this very reason, says Robert Madding, owner, Mid-Atlantic Retractable Screens LLC, an exclusive distributor of Phantom Screens. People want to enjoy the outdoors after they get home from a long day of being stuck inside at work, but it starts to get buggy in the evening, he says. Adding a Phantom Screen gives them a comfortable way to enjoy being outside. And, of course, unobstructed

views are also a huge plus. Unlike traditional screens on windows and doors, which can take away from great views, Phantom Screens can barely be seen. Plus, because of their retractable nature, they are only there when the homeowner wants them to be. When we arent eating out there, I leave it all open to enjoy great, open views, adds

two each time you come in and out? We also have a dog, so we go in and out of the house a lot. It was also a space saver for Maculaitis, who recently moved into a retirement community and owns the home with her sisterin-law. We have a little patio and when we opened the door, which swung out, wed lose 3 feet of the deck, she explains. But things are different with the Phantom Screen. People who visit are amazed. They say, Where did the door go? Its hidden when you want it to be, but can be pulled out when you need it.

Ive always loved screened porches, but my husband loves the open views. So this was a nice compromise for us.-Lois Armbrecht, homeownerA RANGE OF POSSIBILITIES We provide retractable screens for large openings and every type of door: single doors, double doors, swinging doors and sliding doors, says Madding. Many customers like to install a Phantom Screen on outside patios, pool houses or balconies, but you can also do one on a door leading from the garage to the mudroom or the entrance from the garage to the laundry room. There are so many possibilities For most French doors, twin Phantom Screens can be mounted on each side of the frame. When you want to use the screens, theyre pulled together toward the center. For sliding doors, a single Phantom Screen is mounted on a center post so it can roll out of the way when not needed. You can also have a Phantom Screen installed on an existing swing-out or swingin door. Its barely-there look will make your door much more attractive. A variety of color options are also available that allow you to customize a Phantom Screen to suit your exact needs. The product comes in eight standard colors, says Madding, but Phantom Screens custom color program allows homeowners to perfectly match any color they desire. There are also wood grain looks available. Prior to installation, the company will ask various questions to be sure the perfect screen is selected. We always work very closely with customers to meet all of their needs, adds Madding.

HAPPY CUSTOMERS Phantom Screens success is proven by a range of happy customers like the Armbrechts and Maculaitis. Its nicer than I could have imagined, says Armbrecht. We feel its one of the nicest things weve done for our home. We love it, says Kathy. Im always telling people to consider getting one for their own home. Ive even suggested that the community have them installed on all the new units. Not only is it costeffective because they are so durable, but it would also keep new owners happy.
