OrienteeringTake a new direction!
Pub quiz sports question. Which Moray sporting event hasdrawn the most participants in the last 10 years? A well-knownevent like the Moray Marathons is the obvious answer but sur-prisingly it’s orienteering. When we heard that almost 4000runners had converged on Culbin Forest in the summer of
2007 for what we thought was a minority sport, we asked localclub Moravian Orienteers to explain why so many wereattracted to Moray.Orienteering has been around for a long time. It was inventedin Victorian times by the Swedish army and introduced intoScotland in the 1960s. In essence it’s a cross-country race, but one with one big difference. Instead of following a setroute, runners must work out for themselves how to get roundthe course. The idea is to visit several checkpoints along theway. At the beginner level, they are close together in easily-located positions, mainly reached by running along tracks. Atthe other end of the scale they can be far apart in the remotestplaces, as far as possible from obvious landmarks. Coursesvary between 1 Km and 18 km and can take place not only inrugged mountain and forest areas, but also in parks andtowns. Even Forres has its own orienteering map!In orienteering it’s rarely the fastest runner who wins. It’ssometimes referred to as ‘cunning running’ as it’s the runnerwho navigates fastest who comes out on top. It’s very easy tomake navigation mistakes, especially on harder courses, andthe knack is to make sure your legs don’t go faster than yourbrain! There are thousands of areas mapped for orienteeringin the UK, and Moray has some of the world’s finest orien-teering terrain. Forested sand dune areas like Culbin andRoseisle provide great competition areas because theintricate contour shapes tax even the best navigators, whilethe going under foot is never too rough. This enables older, less agile people to take part too. Orienteering competitionsare divided into 5-year age groups with courses gettingshorter as you get older, so people can keep on competingright into their 80s when athletic ability might be on the wanebut the mind is still just as sharp. Moray’s forests also havelots of paths that make them perfect for beginner-level
courses. Every event lays on courses for the very young, andcompetitive orienteering can start as young as age 7 or 8.The Culbin event in 2007 was part of a 6-Day festival based inGrantown on Spey, attracting over 1000 overseas competi-tors as well as 2500 Brits. In 2008 the forest hosted the BritishChampionships where another 2000 runners descended onthe tiny village of Kintessack. Anyone can take part, whateverthe level of event, and this one was no exception where younglocal children were able to line up alongside elite nationalchampions whose courses shared the same area. Latelythere’s been a boom in adventure running for which naviga-tion at speed is a fundamental part.Local schools have recently discovered orienteering andmany have their own school maps. The area’s Active Schoolsco-ordinators stage inter-school events where hundreds ofchildren have learned to map read in an exciting and activeway. All of Moray’s schools come together at Gordonstounevery April for an annual schools festival and this year young-sters can also look forward to a special competition. On June13th, Culbin Forest will be the venue for the first ever Morayand Highland Junior Orienteering Championships. It’s aimedat novices who have discovered the sport at school, andanyone aged 16 or under on the day can take part. With entryclasses for boys and girls in 2-year categories from under 11
upwards, the event will be combined with a mainstream com-petition open to anyone. This should be an exciting chance forbudding adventure runners to take part in a big event atScottish Orienteering’s Hampden Park! With the 2-yearlyScottish 6-Day Orienteering Festival returning to the MorayCoast in August 2013 it’s the perfect place to start getting intraining for what might be Moray’s biggest sporting event ofthe next decade!Moravian Orienteers stage at least one local event everymonth. They also organise training sessions and enter teamsin races further afield. New members are always welcome soif adventure running Moravian style sounds like your kind ofthing you can find more information on their web sitewwwwww..mmoorraavviiaannoorriieenntteeeerr iinngg..oorrgg

Inequality, Justice and God
In these times of economic crisis, itmay become more apparent howunequally the load is carried. I wassurprised the other day to switch onRadio 4 and find a professor ofgeography talking about Britain ingeneral, and London in particular, asa very unequal society. His claim wasthat Britain ranked fourth in the worldfor inequality. He quoted as anexample the wages of the top tenpercent in the city’s square mile, compared with the bottom tenpercent.
We could go further, and many areacutely aware of the differencebetween the west and the developingnations, where wages of a dollar orless are not uncommon. Amartya Senwho won the Nobel Prize foreconomics and who specialises in theeconomics of the poor, famously saidthat the poor have nothing to bargainwith in the marketplace, and that is
the fundamental reason for theirpoverty.
It was thought by some philosophers,John Rawls in particular, that it is rea-sonable to be just, because we mayall be in the same boat one day. Thereply came from his HarvardColleague Nozick, who said with hisusual bluntness, that the powerfulwould be foolish to give up theirunequal bargaining position in themarketplace. And that indeed is thekey - why should we, in any bargain-ing position, give up an unequaladvantage?
The bible calls for just such asacrifice, since God’s justice is notfocused so much on a negotiatedequality, but a justice based on need.
Archbishop Oscar Romero of ElSalvador was converted in three shortyears from a conservative defender ofthe status quo to one of the Church’smost outspoken voices on behalf of
the oppressed, finally dying at thehands of government troops. A shortquotation from his book is givenbelow:
“The violence we preach is notThe violence of the sword,The violence of hatred. It is the violence of love,Of brotherhood,The violence that wills to beatweaponsInto sickles for work”
Our covenant or relationship with Godis not that of equals. Like the poor wehave nothing to negotiate with. YetGod is willing to sacrifice all he has,to become one of us, even our slave. This he calls mercy. This is his justice.
Do we dare to accept such a risk, tolive by such a Spirit?

I really enjoy informingfellow MSP’s in theScottish Parliament abouthow Moray is home toaround half of Scotland’swhisky distilleries. I liketo tell them that my
summer constituency tours are great fun! Representing Speyside and Moray doeshave its advantages. For instance, it’s nowtraditional to hold the first round of theSpirit of Speyside Whisky Festival whiskyjudging in the Scottish Parliament beforethe finals take place prior to the annualdinner. As the host MSP, I am nowappointed a judge and have to sit alongsidethe professionals and sample anywherebetween 50 and 60 Speyside drams, it’s atough job but someone’s got to do it!However, if any reader is worried about myhealth or their local MSP setting a badexample, don’t worry, as we only take asmall sip of each dram and usually spit itout before eating some more oatcake andwashing out our mouths to help prepare forthe next tasting! This annual event is nowone of my favourite parliamentary duties!
I never thought I wouldbe asked the question -‘Would you like to haveyour picture taken with aGiant Inflatable Colon?’. While it is a fairly surrealstatement to read in a
letter, it is actually one of the more creativeways of getting an issue to the attention ofMP’s. In this case it is the very worthyBowel Cancer Campaign, which, with thesupport of TV personality Lynn FauldsWood is doing a fantastic job raisingawareness of a serious, but also preventa-ble and curable form of cancer. I canrecommend a visit to the campaign’swebsite at www.bowelcancer.tvIt does go to show, though, that campaigns, even on very serious issues, can have a bigimpact through humour and get people tosit up and take notice.
