Dr. Vincenzo Di Nicola CLM Mentor
The Cosmos Club Washington DC, 25 April 2013
Eliot Sorel, MD
Letters to a Young Therapist, was the catalytic topic of Dr. Vincenzo Di Nicola’s dialog with a spirited CLM group, at the Cosmos Club, last evening. It was at the Club that the idea of our LM was initiated in September 2005 when we convened the first DC wide PGY I & II Cmeeting. The selected topic was catalytic to a robust, revealing and riveting series of exchanges between a world renowned scholar, Dr. Di Nicola, and a stellar group of MITs, ECPs and other embers of the WPS, inclusive of Dr. James Griffith, the Interim Chair of Psychiatry at the m
George Washington University School of Medicine. Psychiatry, Medicine & Philosophy; the patient–physician dyad; professional ethics; science, medicine and psychiatry; economic factors and professionalism; research vs. clinical paradigm; the sciences and humanities, kindred spirits or polar opposites; reductionistic, ystemic, systematic, integrative models; evolving models of science, medicine, humanities; sparadigm shifts and new paradigms , were but a few of the passionately discussed topics. The subject matter of the evening was preceded by a brief report by Doctors. Constance E. Dunlap, Veronica Slootsky and Milangel Concepcion of the CLM group who scientifically contributed to the success of the WPA 2013 Bucharest Congress at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest, Romania, April 10‐13, 2013. An immediate outcome from that Congress is a roposal being currently worked on to establish the APA Caucus on Global Mental Health & pPsychiatry. Details will be shortly forthcoming to all interested. We are most grateful to Dr. Vincenzo Di Nicola for his erudition, his intellectual brilliance and is generosity in sharing with us and our CLM group, his views, opinions and scholarly hwritings relevant to key priorities facing American and global psychiatry. Our next CLM event will take place in June. Drs. Enrico Suardi, Hind Benjelloun and Carol ynn Trippitelli will be our panelists addressing Family, Career, and Illness. Details will be orthcoming after the May APA annual meeting. Lf
Dear Professor Sorel and the Washington, DC Team, Chers collègues, It was a real pleasure to meet some of you in Romania and more of you in Washington DC recently. The WPA 2013 Bucharest Congress was a rare combination of cultural exchanges, psychiatric presentations and personal encounters. The organization was superb, the atmosphere congenial and the scientific programme, ranging from Dilip Jeste, Charles Nemeroff to Norman Sartorious and from Health Systems' Performance Roundtables to our Symposium on Belonging, was stimulating and innovative. Thank you for your warm reception at my Stokes Lecture at GWU and at the CLM Meeting at the Cosmos Club! I want to express my gratitude and admiration especially to Prof. James Grifith and Prof. Eliot Sorel for inviting me and making all of this possible. Now, I would like to reciprocate your warm welcome in Bucharest, Romania and Washington, DC. As President-Elect of the APA District Branch for Quebec and Eastern Canada, I have the pleasure of announcing our Annual Psychiatric Conference to be held on Friday, October 25th, 2013 here in our beautiful, historic and elegant city of Montreal. It is my privilege to choose the conference theme and I have chosen trauma as this year's topic.
Here is the conference title in both of Canada's official languages:
Trauma and Its Symptoms: Psychiatric Perspectives
Du trauma à l'expression symptomatique: Perspectives psychiatriques
In the spirit of the CLM group in Washington, DC, I would like to invite all residents in psychiatry, early-career psychiatrists and their mentors in the DC area to join the members of the Washington Psychiatric Society and our APA DB to participate in our annual conference and visit us here in Montreal. We plan to invite both speakers from the USA and from Quebec for an exciting perspective on contemporary issues in psychiatric trauma. Besides the conference programme during the day, I would like to convene a meeting among the residents, early-career psychiatrists and their mentors from the USA with your colleagues here in Quebec! Please indicate your interests in joining us for this conference as well as for a special meeting combining social and scientific interests for a dinner event together here in Montreal.
