John Rothfield ~ ‘Dr Turf’

2

As part of our Spring Racing Carnival celebrations John Rothfield aka “Dr Turf” was invited to speak on all things horse racing. John gave a very witty insight into the ‘sport of kings’ and kept us entertained the whole 30 minutes of his talk. He also gave us some tips for the Melbourne Cup.

As a leading racing analyst on TVN and SEN 1116, John Rothfield is one of Australia’s leading racing experts.

As a young boy one of John’s earliest memories of racing was Gwen the SP bookie arriving at his home to collect small debts from his mother in the 1960’s. After spending most of his Saturday’s with his father at various race tracks around Victoria, by the time John turned 16 he was already betting bigger than his dad.

Better known nowadays as “Dr Turf” or the “Doc”, he can be heard giving his expert opinion on most sporting events across a number of different networks.

Dr Turf realised early on that in order to be the best, he needed to learn from the best and luckily for him, he had John Duncan to take him under his wing. Duncan taught John how to “bet like a genius” and under his watchful eye, he quickly honed his skills and learnt that if you were diligent, prepared to put the time in, and had a mathematical ability, you could bet and win.

John gave his first tip on the radio as part of the Punter to Punter team with comedians Slim Whittle and Tony Rickards on 3RRR in the early ‘80s, later becoming a panellist on The Fat on ABC, and a Saturday broadcaster on 3AW with Trevor Marmalade and Tony Leonard.

“Dr Turf can currently be heard co-hosting Off The Bench and Footy Fix on SEN 1116, as well as the nightly drive time program, Sportsday, which airs on Zinc radio across regional Queensland. “Dr Turf” appears as a regular commentator on TVN- an Australian thoroughbred horse-racing channel available on Foxtel, Austar and Optus TV, and co-host on ‘Off The Bit’, a late night racing show on Southern Cross Ten across Victoria.

John’s book, Dr Turf’s Guide to Better Punting published in 1987, details how to get organised, how to do the form, how to bet and how to win.

‘Dr Turf’ lives in Melbourne with his wife, Melissa, and their three daughters who are all keen to learn their fathers trade. John says of his daughters “I’m happy to teach them anything they want to know about the gambling profession, as long as they approach it in a semi- professional way. You either approach it that way or you lose everything you invest”.

Cassie Smith-Moir has advised that her grandfather PP Merv Deutsher passed away peacefully on Friday night 30 October. Merv was a Charter Member who had a long and distinguished career with our Club. Merv is a Past President and had been awarded a Paul Harris Fellow and a Paul Harris Sapphire in recognition of his contribution to Rotary and making a difference in the community. He also collected every Bulletin the Club produced until 30 June this year.

Cassie mentioned that she had been honoured to attend our Club’s Social occasions with him and it would be an honor to be invited to one of our meetings to say a few words about Merv, his family and involvement in Rotary.

A funeral service was held at W.D. Rose Funerals in Marriage Road at 2.30pm on Wednesday 4 November and many family members, friends and Rotarians were present. Merv’s son Garry was the first to speak followed by Merv’s 93 year old brother Keith. Both told the family history of the Deutsher family who migrated in 1848 to Adelaide from Germany Adelaide was only founded 12 years before. Merv’s granddaughters then spoke about a loving grandfather, a family man and a ‘rock’. Merv loved his red wine and his BBQs and of course his Rotary Club. His favourite saying was ‘Early to bed. Its going to be a big day tomorrow’.

He will be sorely missed by the members of the Rotary Club of Brighton and the Club expresses its condolences to the Deutsher family.

Pres. Barry thanked Chairman PP Paul Nicholson for his introduction and welcomed everyone to the meeting at the Rotary Club of Brighton and being a race carnival themed evening, it was the only place to be on a Thursday evening.

Barry said to ‘Racetrack’ Paulie Nicholson and ‘Jockey’ Darren Donnellan that the place looked awesome and he thought it would be another terrific night.

Barry then introduced the top table which had guest speaker and leading racing analyst John Rothfield aka “Dr Turf” who was there to enlighten us on racing and hopefully give us a few good tips for the Melbourne Cup. Barry welcomed Dr Turf to the meeting. Barry said that the previous week we heard from Catie Kirke founder of ‘ART Your Life’ who spoke to us about “Empowering Women”. No one knew what that meant but it turned out that Catie teaches young women how to reframe how they view themselves and for many for the first time how to love themselves, their bodies and their life inside and out. Catie was a guest of Jim Hill at last week’s meeting.

The Children’s Christmas Party is coming up and Barry said we are lucky to have Paddy Michaelson stepping in as Santa once again. Paddy has also agreed to coordinate things so please let Paddy know if you would like to bring any children. It is yet to be confirmed but we are hoping to have one of Australia’s leading magicians in attendance this year.

Finally some sad news. Barry said that we lost Madi (at right) the previous week and now Michelle (below) has been promoted to Events Manager for Milanos, so last week was her last night. Barry thanked Michelle for many years of great service and said her beautiful smile will be missed.

Stuart brought us up to date with the Great Australia Day Swim which will be held on Tuesday 26 January 2016. Stuart said there was only 3 months to go and that there were no major changes and that they were sticking to the model that they have settled down to for the last six years. Last year there were 1,000 swimmers registered and they hope to grow that They have about 2,500 swimmers registered on the database and 100,000 likes on our Facebook page. Paul Sadlers Swimland is onboard again as the major sponsor and there is a total sponsorship of $46,000 including Marshall White and Brighton Travelworld with the raffle plus Bayside Council and others who are helping with raffle prizes. Our Event partner is Lorne Surf Life Saving Club with their Pier to Pub that attracts 5,000 swimmers. The Baths, the Brighton Yacht Club and Lifesavers are all on board and Jeremy Hope has looked into some free radio and TV ads. It involves a lot of work and there is a hard core of people working at the moment and as we get closer Stuart hopes that along with our family and partners that we get onboard and make it another happy GADS day. See more details page 3.

‘Racetrack Paulie’ did his phantom Melbourne Cup race call with the usual aplomb and several people won money. Geoff Cunningham and Alan Jarrott were involved in reading out the winners - too many to record but everyone had a great time.Somewhere in the chaos was the raffle presented by Geoff and Leone Shaw and the Editor didn’t record who won the bottles of wine but they looked happy!

PART 23 OF THE 50 THINGS EVERY ROTARIAN SHOULD KNOW:

‘HONORARY MEMBERSHIP’

“Honorary” is one of the two types of membership a person may have in a Rotary club. This type of membership is the highest distinction a Rotary club can confer and is exercised only in exceptional cases to recognize an individual for unusual service and contributions to Rotary and society. Honorary members cannot propose new members to the club, do not hold office and are exempt from attendance requirements and club dues.

Many distinguished heads of state, explorers, authors, musicians, astronauts and other public personalities have been honorary members of Rotary clubs, including King Gustaf of Sweden, King George VI of England, King Badouin of Belgium, King Hassan III of Morocco, Sir Winston Churchill, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, Charles Lindbergh, composer Jean Sibelius, explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Thor Heyerdahl, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Dr. Albert Sabin, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and many of the presidents of the United States. Truly, those selected for honorary membership are those who have done much to further the ideals of Rotary.

A HIDDEN TREASURE RIGHT HERE IN BRIGHTON

The Dendy Wurlitzer Pipe Organ was built in 1924 in America and installed in the Capital theatre in Melbourne in 1925. It was played regularly to support silent movies.

The organ was purchased by the Victorian division of the Theatre Organ Society of Australia in 1965 and installed in the Dendy theatre.

This Society is made up of volunteers who have a love of pipe organ music. The Society owns three organs situated in the suburbs of Melbourne, These organs are maintained by a small, but very experienced, group of organ loving members who work hard to raise funds through concerts and donations. After the installation in the Dendy in, the organ was used regularly until the building was reconfigured to a number of boutique picture theatres. The organ is still used in theatre 4 and is played on a Saturday night prior to the evening showing of a film. In 2010 it was decided to carry out a major reconditioning of the Dendy organ at an estimated cost of parts and some expert labour of in excess of $25,000. This work is almost completed, however, there is still some work to be done and additional cost to be met.

To strengthen the support of the Dendy organ, a sub-committee has been formed and is known as the Friends of the Dendy Organ (FODO).This committee conducts concerts in the Dendy raising funds to assist in the general maintenance of the organ and at the same time providing entertainment to interested members of the public.

Local schools and Colleges have children visit the theatre to experience the wonderful sounds of the pipe organ. Interested children are able to undergo lessons.

Palace Theatre kindly makes theatre 4 available for use on scheduled weekends. A fundraising luncheon is being organised on 14 November and details are at right.

IVAN’S HACKERSIVAN’S HACKERS

Threatening black clouds, rain, thunder and lightning kept many Hackers in the cot last Saturday morning. Nevertheless, a sextet of hardy Hackers did manage to roust themselves out of bed to brave the elements. We welcomed back Hackers’ Captain Bruce Crossley after a four month lay-off with a broken ankle, travelling by golf cart.

The Pre-game Putting competition was easily won by Ray Street, and by tee-off time, the storm had mercifully passed.

The damp track certainly suited mudlark Ron Stark, who blitzed the field with consistent scores of one par and five bogeys over the first six holes, finishing on 43 to narrowly beat off a fast-finishing Ian Cole for the Off-the-Stick trophy.

Meanwhile, Bruce Crossley secured the Nearest-the-Pin prize, being the only Hacker to make the green, and also came within a bull’s roar of a Venus trophy.

Jim Moore’s game was a mixture of brilliance and frustration, the highlights being his winning of the Longest Drive prize and then another superb drive on the Venus hole.

Driving off the tee for the second group of Tom Buxton, Ian Cole and Ray Street was a little more dubitable. However, they were very pleased with themselves when they all managed to hit the fairway on the fifth hole. Tom Buxton played his usual consistent and trouble-free game, except only for a mid-round lapse on the sixth hole.

At the end of the day, Ron Stark was the clear Handicap winner from place-getters Ian Cole and Ray Street. Overall, a most enjoyable morning of golf and fellowship and another example that it pays to turn up and play irrespective of the weather forecast. As a bonus, we even got to see two turtles on the course and also partook of the classic Monte Carlo cream biscuits with our post-game coffees.

Where are you oto Monte?
