Recommended display settings
For the menu screens and also thepages from the Tutor Resource File todisplay best, it is recommended thatyou ensure that the following settingshave been checked:
From the Edit menu, selectPreferences.
Select Smoothing from the list onthe left of the dialogue box.
At the top of the dialogue box,ensure that all three items are ticked(Smooth text, Smooth line art andSmooth images).
This will greatly improve the display ofimages and text on this CD-ROM.
You will only need to do this once forany computer as the computer willstore your preferences for you (so thenext time you use the CD-ROM thesepreferences will already be correct).

The PowerPoint® presentations open up inMicrosoft® PowerPoint® and you will needto have Microsoft® PowerPoint® installedon your computer to be able to open andview presentations. The PowerPoint®presentations provided will run in
Microsoft® PowerPoint® version 97 andabove.
Returning to menu screensTo return to the menu screens from one ofthe PDF files (pages from the TutorResource File), click the up button.
A note about PDF filesPDF stands for Portable Document Format.A PDF file will look the same on the screenas in print regardless of what kind ofcomputer you are using or which softwarepackage it was created from. Any computercan view a PDF file using Adobe® Reader®,which can be downloaded from theAdobe® website (www.adobe.com).

Changing the view of the page
There are a number of ways in which you can change the view of a page. Thereare buttons on the toolbar that allow you to do this. Hover your mouse over partsof the toolbar displayed below to see an explanation of what they do:
You can also use the View menu to perform view-changing tasks. Click on theView menu on the menu bar and then select from the options available.

Customising PDF pages (1 of 2)
If you want to customise any of thepages from the Tutor Resource File, youcan copy and paste the text and imagesinto Microsoft® Word (or another wordprocessing application). You need to beaware that the order of text can beaffected when you paste PDF files into aword processing document, so it is bestto copy blocks of text rather thanattempting to copy a whole page at atime.
Selection toolsThere are two selection tools that allowyou to copy items from the PDFdocuments:
Select Text Tool
Snapshot Tool
It is advisable to use the Snapshot Toolto copy any elements you do not wantto alter (e.g. tables, images and, inparticular, formulae and symbols), thenuse the Select Text Tool to copy onlythe text you want to alter. This willremove the need for reformattingtables.
To copy text:Select the Text Select Tool:
Click and drag the mouse tohighlight the piece of text you wantto copy.
Either right-click on the highlightedtext and select Copy to Clipboard,or select Copy from the Edit menu,or press Ctrl + C on your keyboard.

To copy graphics, tables or otherelements you do not want to alter:
Select the Snapshot Tool:
Click and drag the mouse on thepage to select the image (or otherpart of the page) that you want tocopy. When you release the mouse,the selection is automatically copiedto the Clipboard (i.e. saved in thecomputer’s memory).
Then:Open your word processing package.
Either right-click and select Paste, orselect Paste from the Edit menu, orpress Ctrl + V on your keyboard.
Note:When you have finished, you need to
select the Hand Tool button
in Adobe® Reader® and click back on
the area you selected to copy and paste,
so that you can move around the CD-
ROM as normal.
How to use this CD-ROM
Printing from a PDF document
Note:The document must be open to print fromit (e.g. if you want to print some activitiesfrom Unit 1, you first need to navigate tothe Unit 1 activities).
Either select Print from the File menu,
or click on the Print button on
the toolbar, or press Ctrl + P on your
keyboard.
The Print dialogue box will appear onscreen.
In the Printer section, check that thecorrect printer is selected. If it is not, clickthe down arrow and select from theavailable printers.
In the Print Range section, select whichpages you want to print.
Selecting All will print the wholedocument (e.g. if you are looking at theUnit 1 activities it will print them all).
Selecting Current view will print thecurrent view (e.g. if you have zoomedin to look at a picture in detail, it willjust print that picture).
Selecting Current page will just printthe page that is currently on screen.
In the Pages from: and to: boxes, youcan specify the pages you want toprint (e.g. to print activities 3 and 4 ofUnit 1, enter 3 in the from: box and 4in the to: box).
In the Page Handling section you canselect the number of copies to print.
Click OK when you have finished, to sendthe pages to the printer or click Cancel toexit the Print dialogue box withoutprinting.

How to use this CD-ROM
Printing from a Microsoft® PowerPoint® file
Note:The Microsoft® PowerPoint presentationmust be open to print from it.
If you simply want to print all the slidesfrom the presentation to the defaultprinter, click on the Print button onthe toolbar.
Alternatively, select Print from the Filemenu or press Ctrl + P on your keyboardand the Print dialogue box will appear onscreen.
In the Printer section, check that thecorrect printer is selected. If it is not, clickthe down arrow and select from theavailable printers.
In the Print range section, select whatyou want to print.
Selecting All will print the wholepresentation (i.e. all the slides).
Selecting Current slide will print theslide currently on the screen.
Selecting Selection will print the slidesyou have selected (the option won’t beavailable if no slides are selected).
In the Slides: box, you can specify thepages you want to print (e.g. to printslides 2, 3 and 4, enter 2-4).
In the Print what: section you can selectto print the Slides, Handouts, Notes Pagesor Outline View.
In the Color/grayscale: section you canselect to print in grayscale, colour or blackand white.
Click OK to send the pages to the printeror click Cancel to exit the Print dialoguebox without printing.

Exiting
You can exit this CD-ROM by doing anyof the following:
Use the Exit button on the menuscreens (note that this will not exitAdobe® Reader®, it will only closethe documents).
Click on the x in the top right-handcorner of the Adobe® Reader®window.
From the File menu, select: Exit.
Press: Ctrl + Q.
If you need to reopen the CD-ROM afterexiting (note the CD-ROM must be inthe CD drive):
Double-click on My Computer (onthe desktop); then double-click onyour CD drive. The CD-ROM will openautomatically.
OR: Eject the CD-ROM from the CDdrive and then put it back in. TheCD-ROM will run automatically.
How to use this CD-ROM
If you want this CD-ROM to be availableover a network, then you will need toensure that a copy of Adobe® Reader®is installed on all the computers onwhich you want to use the CD-ROM.
You can download the correct versionfor your platform from the Adobe®website (www.adobe.com) or you caninstall the Windows version directlyfrom this CD-ROM.
Double-click onAdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe in the CD-ROM’s root directory and Adobe®Reader® 6.1 will install.
The FILES folder can then be copied ontothe network and BTEC NationalBusiness.pdf, when opened by a user ona computer that has Adobe® Reader®installed, will automatically open inAdobe® Reader® and run correctly.
You might find it useful to provide ashortcut to the BTEC NationalBusiness.pdf file so that users do notneed to browse through the FILESfolder looking for it. (Refer to youroperating system manual if you need tofind out how to do this.)
It is also advisable to ensure that all thePDF files and Microsoft® PowerPoint®files are set with Read-only property sothat no-one can accidentally alter them.
Note: You may find it easier if you turnoff the autorun feature on thecomputer if you are installing Adobe®Reader® from the CD-ROM. (Refer toyour operating system manual if youneed to find out how to do this.)
