The project brief The purpose of this unit is to allow you to develop the research skills you need to supportboth theoretical and practical elements of your chosen specialism. You will be able toselect the most appropriate methods and techniques for undertaking detailed research.You will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to identify suitable sourcematerial and to apply the information in context. You will acquire the skills to distinguishbetween primary and secondary sources, to evaluate the validity of such sources, and toextract the necessary information from them. You will then be able to synthesise researchmaterial into an appropriate form for presentation (see below).

Scenario An online music magazine are looking to hire a team of writers, researchers anddocumentary makers. To apply for a role at the company, applicants must present

evidence that they have had experience with investigative journalism and present anexample of their work. They will demand that you show all sources of research so thatthey can be happy with the credibility of your presentation.

You must devise a proposal for your chosen method of presentation andsubmit this for approval. It must include a justification of your researchmethods, and acknowledge an academic framework. Select a suitableformat that would not be out of place for an online magazine.

Task 22.1, 2.2, 2.3

After you have received ‘approval’ for your proposal you must thenorganise your research material using appropriate categories and devisea structured plan for your research that highlights primary and secondarysources. You must evaluate the effectiveness of the primary sources andasses the validity of secondary sources.

Written article

Task 33.1, 3.2, 3.3,4.2

Present your findings in such a way that shows you can demonstratecritical opinions based on the evidence sources, with acknowledgementof formula and methodology. Evaluate your findings and makerecommendations for further consideration. Present your findings usingthe agreed format.
