4th Grade PacketDear Parents,

Welcome to Fourth Grade! Attached you will find enrichment activities for your child. The activities are designed to prepare your child for the upcoming school year.

Please continue to encourage your child to read during the summer. It will strengthen their vocabulary if they read a variety of materials (books from different genres, magazines, comic strips, newspapers, etc.). I challenge students to read 3 nonfiction books about animals, a biography, and a place they would like to visit. They may complete the attached worksheet for fun, or choose to write a paragraph using a topic sentence, details and a conclusion sentence about their animal, person and place.

In math, students will solve word problems, complete place value charts, and work on their multiplication facts. It is imperative that your child memorize their multiplication facts over the summer. All fourth grade students will have a multiplication test the first week of school and throughout the school year. Please use the websites listed to reinforces skills as well as the timed multiplication quiz.

Leap Into a Good Book Students: Your objective is to read 3 nonfiction books one about an animal, a biography of an important person and one about a place you would like to visit. Choose your book. Use the following strategy to find a book on your reading level. 1. Open to a page of the book. 2. Begin reading. 3. Each time you come to a word you don’t know, hold up 1 finger. 4. After you finish reading the page, check to see how many fingers you are holding up.

Multiplication Practice In order for students to be successful in fourth grade it is imperative that they know their multiplication facts. Students should know their facts 2’s to 12’s. Memorize your facts until you know them automatically! You may study online, with flash cards, or any way that works for you.

Multiplication LogEach student will record the amount of time that they practice their multiplication facts. You may use flashcards, websites, a matching game, or another creative way you think of to practice your facts. If you use a website please record the specific website that you visited.

Goal: 1 hour per week. The BEST way to practice is a short amount of time, 10-15 minutes, 3-4 days a week.
