So, we’ve had a reboot (the latest Prince of Persia title

– you know, the one with Elika and the controversial death, or rather, anti-death system) of the reboot (the Sands of Time trilogy – that reboot), but now, with the upcoming Prince of Persia movie looming ominously on the horizon, Ubisoft has seen fit to return to the Sands of Time setting to coincide with the release of the Hollywood blockbuster. It’s important to note that this game will not follow the plot

of the movie – instead, this will simply further the Sands of Time storyline to give players a better understanding of that setting. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands takes place during the seven-year gap between PoP: The Sands of Time and PoP: Warrior Within. After his adventure in Azad, the prince returns to his brother Malik’s kingdom to help him defend the kingdom from the threat of an invading army. After a desperate gamble that sees the pair unleashing a sand army (we don’t know what that

is either) that turns the tide of the conflict in their favour, there’s an unfortunate side effect: everyone in the kingdom but the two brothers are turned to sand (thanks to a pair of medallions which the brothers possess), leaving the pair with nothing to do but try to survive in this situation they unwittingly created.

In addition to once again having power over time (for those of you who don’t know, the prince is able to rewind and manipulate time to cheat death, solve puzzles and do lots of cool stuff), the prince will now have power over nature as well. We barely know anything about the prince’s intriguing new nature-altering powers, but recent trailers for the game have revealed one of these powers – the prince will now be able to control water. That may sound boring, but it’s sure to make for some interesting platforming opportunities. This ability allows

the prince to freeze water for a limited amount of time. That means that things like waterfalls can suddenly be made solid to open up previously unseen movement paths, jets of water spraying from cracks in walls can be frozen to create poles from which to swing and jump from to reach new vantage points, and geysers can be frozen to create columns which the prince can then climb.

You can expect the same excellent platforming, the same fluid, responsive and fun combat system, and the same awesome adventure elements that make the Prince of Persia series a favourite among gamers. The game is being built on the Anvil engine, which is the same engine that powered the most recent Prince of Persia title, so expect all the fluid animations, great visuals and other technical wonders from that game to be present in this new title. Fans of Prince of Persia should already be very excited – because this game looks to be bringing all of the gameplay that we know and love back to our consoles.

It’s no secret that almost every RTS fan on the planet is

looking forward to StarCraft II. Wings of Liberty will function as both the first episode and base game around which the trilogy of StarCraft II will form. It will offer players the full multiplayer experience, but the single player campaign is limited to the Terrans, with a small Protoss mini-campaign to wet your appetites. The story takes place four years after the events of StarCraft: Brood Wars, and will follow the iconic Jim Raynor’s new charge as leader of an insurgent group against the autocratic Terran Dominion. Without the power to do any major damage to the Dominion, Raynor’s group is relegated to the role of mercenaries and artefact hunters who hunt down valuable and rare items thought to belong to the ancient race known as the Xel’Naga.

While the story is an important part of any Blizzard offering, it’s the multiplayer side of things that will really bring in the masses and keep them playing. To ensure there’s no break from this tradition, there has been a serious focus on the multiplayer aspect, including a complete overhaul of Blizzard’s online matchmaking and networking tool – Battle.net. To help get things off the ground, the multiplayer beta for SCII has been running for some time, and the developers are using it to gain valuable balance testing and feedback from the community.

The three races of StarCraft – Terran, Zerg and Protoss – make their return, and while it may seem at first that little has changed, the differences become incredibly obvious when you’ve had a little while to play around.

Most of the basic units are still around, like the Marine, Zealot, Zergling and Hydralisk, but they’ve all had a bit of a change to bring them to speed with the rest of the game. Zerglings, for example, can now mutate into Banelings – little balls of explosive acid that can deal huge amount of damage when sacrificed, or even the humble Supply Depot, which can now be used more effectively as a wall thanks to its ability to drop down below the ground to allow units to walk over it, then pop back up again.

The game has also had its share of visual updates, largely thanks to its move over to the aging but still quite capable

Warcraft III engine, which has also been given a major overhaul. The engine now has support for DX10 effects, as well as Havoc Physics to really liven up the battlefield. Many of your favourite maps have also made a return, and the addition of a new resource, the rich mineral field, is sure to spice up every game you have.

Whether you’re a long-time SC fan or have never played the game before, StarCraft II is going to be the RTS to own this year. It’s going to have an epic single player mode and a multiplayer community that is going to play this game for the next decade.

It’s like Grand Theft Auto, but in the Wild West. That means

cowboys instead of gangsters, six shooters rather than submachine guns, saloons in place of nightclubs and lots of horses on open plains replacing traffic on city highways. Set at the turn of the 20th century, this follow up to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver casts

players as former outlaw John Marston. You’ll carve your own path through what the developers promise to be an epic story, set in an open world filled with frontier towns, vast prairies teeming with wildlife and other Wild West-type stuff. Also – you can tie people up and leave them on railway tracks. Good times.

Unlike Activision’s other Transformers titles, this latest

foray into the world of giant robots beating on other giant robots isn’t based on either the movies or the TV series – instead, this is an original game that will attempt to convey the tale of the war that took place on the planet Cybertron before the Transformers chose to throw

a spanner in Earth’s works. For the first time, we’ll get a glimpse of what the Transformers may have been like before coming to Earth. Two campaigns will be available – one for the Autobots and another for the Decepticons. Running on the Unreal Engine 3, the game will feature multiplayer and cooperative play for up to three players.

If you’ve missed out on the two expansions for GTA IV, then this

is the perfect opportunity to catch up. Both the biker-centric “The Lost and the Damned” which introduces gang wars, and the hilarious “The Ballad of Gay Tony” are on the disc, and

don’t require the original GTA IV installed, present or in any way nearby to play – these are standalone games that could even make for an excellent way to play GTA IV for the first time. To complete the package are three new radio stations: Vice City FM, RamJam FM and the talkshow Self-Actualization FM.

While Tiger’s endorsements might have dropped like

flies, EA is still happy to back the pro golfer with this title, the next in their line of Tiger Woods games that began way back in 1998. The player will select a team from both European and American contenders in the attempt to take the Ryder Cup. Playable game modes include foursomes where players hit alternate shots, four-balls and singles to bring the event to a close with a head-to-head match-up.

For the Wii release, the game has undergone serious work to take advantage of the MotionPlus controller. The Advanced Swing difficulty setting will accurately read the angle while Tour Pro reads the rotation, swinging plane and point of contact. Additionally, Tour Pro brings the player closer than ever to the action by giving them a first-person view that creates “the most immersive and authentic golf experience in any video game.”

Building on the success of UFC 2009 Undisputed, this latest

title promises to offer a host of improvements on its predecessor. Most notably, developer Yuke’s Osaka (veterans of a decade’s worth of WWE games) claims the control system has been vastly improved over the last edition, which was criticised for having an exceptionally steep learning curve. Fighter animations and transitions between moves and positions also will receive a major upgrade, making the action feel more smooth and natural. Yuke’s has implemented what they call a new sway system that allows for full upper body control and head movement to help dodge attacks. While on the ground, a new posture system lets the player deliver strong, fight-ending strikes from every position. The developers have also added new strikes, submissions, transitions, cage moves and the ability to switch to a southpaw stance anytime during the fight. With all these changes to the way the combatants moves, it’s hard to imagine the control system

becoming any easier, but it certainly sounds more robust.

With the authenticity of the combat taken care of (and let’s be honest, that’s what will make or break this game), UFC 2010 aims to recreate the atmosphere of a live UFC television event. In addition to a roster of over 100 realistically-rendered fighters, the game will also feature commentary from UFC announcers Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan. Introductions will be handled by the “veteran voice of the Octagon” Bruce Buffer. And the Octagon girls will parade around between rounds in all their physics-defying glory.

The single-player game will feature a career mode where you can create a custom fighter and try to pummel your way to the UFC Hall of Fame. When putting together your new fighter, you’ll be able to choose and combine moves from different mixed martial arts disciplines. In addition to boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo and wrestling (which were available in UFC 2009) players will also be able to choose from

Sambo, karate and Greco-Roman wrestling this year. Along the way you’ll be encouraged to join a fight camp, spar online and taunt your opponents during weigh-ins and interviews in order to increase your image and popularity. Based on all that showmanship, and presumably how well you do in the actual fights, you can land sponsorships and endorsements.

New game modes in UFC 2010 include a title mode, where you fight through a weight class to earn and defend a belt; title defence, in which you complete milestone challenges on your road to stardom; and a 16-player individual and team tournament mode. You’ll also be able to engage in Ultimate Fights Mode which lets you relive some of the more memorable fights in UFC history, in either single player mode or 1v1 with another player. Each fight has a collection of challenges for you to overcome, as both the winner and loser; complete all of the challenges and you unlock a montage of recaps of the actual fight itself.

It’s the 1970s. Big Boss has his “Soldiers without Borders”

(apparently, these quotation marks are mandatory) stationed in Columbia, when he is approached by a visitor from Costa Rica, “a Nation without a Military”. Following the Cuban Missile Crisis, as Latin America became the key to maintaining the balance of power between

the East and the West, Costa Rica somehow managed to maintain neutrality throughout the whole ordeal. A mysterious armed force appears to be

engaged in suspicious activity throughout the country, and so, the “Soldiers without Borders” are brought in to help keep the peace and maintain Costa Rica’s independence. In time, these Soldiers without Borders would become known as the founders of “Outer Heaven”. With Hideo Kojima at the helm, Peace Walker promises to bring more of the tactical espionage action that we know and love to the PSP. Players will take control of the illustrious Naked Snake, and up to four players will be able to join forces and use advanced cooperative techniques to accomplish dangerous missions. In addition, the game will feature basic base building and 3v3 competitive play. The game will also reportedly feature singing tanks and other vehicles.

Darksiders is coming to the PC! The game has been

well received both critically and commercially, but PC gamers were initially left out of all the apocalyptic fun that the game provided console gamers with. In June, that’s set to change as War, his massive sword Chaoseater and his flaming steed Ruin make their way to the PCs of keyboard-and-mouse loving gamers. For those of you who haven’t heard, the game plays like a mixture of God of War and The Legend of Zelda, so expect meaty combat interspersed with exploration and adventure elements.

This long-awaited psychological thriller puts

players in the shoes of Alan Wake, a horror novelist with writer’s block. Things go awry when his wife goes missing after the events of one of his novels begin occurring in the real world while on vacation in an idyllic little town called Bright Falls. Light will play a major role in the game as it is Alan’s primary defence against the nightmarish foes (who gain strength from darkness and shadows) he now faces, so flashlights, flares and other light sources will become your allies.

Conventional weapons will make an appearance, however. Similar to a TV series, Alan Wake’s tale will be told in episodic form, with the game being broken up into “episodes” (complete with “previously on Alan Wake”-style intros) that you’ll have to play through in order to unravel the mystery and find Alan’s wife. The town of Bright Falls is being painstakingly created to be as authentic and detailed as possible. There’ll be plenty of puzzles, intense combat, terrifying enemies and cinematic set pieces featured in the game.

Super Street Fighter IV is a re-release of the hit title

SFIV, and includes a host of new features. Ten new characters make their way onto the roster, eight of which are from previous SF games: T. Hawk and Dee Jay, who were dropped from the original release, Adon from the first game in the series, Cody and Guy from Final Fight and Street Fighter

Alpha 3, and Dudly, Ibuki and Makoto from SFIII.

There are also new game modes, including an online team battle mode for up to eight players, a replay channel that allows players to save and view replays from other players, and Endless Battle, in which the winner plays against a rotating group of players.

We’re going back to E.D.N. III. It’s been ten years

of in-game time since the events that transpired in the first Lost Planet, and things have changed a bit – the once snow-covered planet now has heat blooms occurring all over it, resulting in lush vegetation, and in some areas, even barren deserts. The fight still rages over

T-ENG (Thermal ENerGy), with various factions battling the indigenous, insect-like Akrid to gain control over the precious resource. Huge bosses, 4-player co-op (for the entire single-player campaign), competitive online multiplayer, big guns, bigger robots and character customisation will all feature in this one.

Cricket fans can look forward to the next game in the

long-running series from Codemasters. A continuation from last year’s Ashes Cricket 2009, IC 2010 will put players more in control of the pitch than ever before. The Action Cam will put players right in the white shoes of your favourite cricketer from the England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket Australia. Additionally, the Power Stick system gives batsmen the control they need to push quick singles to gaps in the field or slog the ball all the way into the stands of the game’s 21 international stadiums.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 features gameplay that will

be instantly recognisable to anyone who has played any of the titles in the successful LEGO series of games. Spanning the first four books, this title will have a heavy focus on exploration and item collecting. Casting spells will play a major role, and you’ll unlock new spells (each with their own unique uses) as you progress through the story. Making potions will also feature heavily, with potions that help the player complete levels but can have dodgy side effects (like transforming the player into a frog) if brewed incorrectly. Expect to see many of your favourite characters, like Ron, Hermione, Sirius Black, Dumbledore, Hagrid and more. Each playable character has their own specialty: Harry is good at broomstick riding, Hermione is

great with spells and Ron has his pet rat Scabbers, who can reach seemingly unreachable areas. Split-screen multiplayer will, as it has been with previous games in the LEGO series, once again be available for you and your family/friends to enjoy together.
