    Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres operating hours Cairnlea Community Hub, Delahey Community Centre and Sydenham Community Centre will all close on Wednesday 24 December at 12noon. West Sunshine Community Centre and Westvale Community Centre will close on Friday 19 December at 5pm.

    Delahey Community Centre and Sydenham Community Centre will re-open on Monday

    5 January 2015. With Cairnlea Community Hub open from Wednesday 7 January 2015, and West Sunshine Community Centre and Westvale Community Centre reopening on Monday 12 January 2015.

    The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre will be closed from 12noon Wednesday 24 December and will re-open on Monday 5 January 2015. During January the centre will operate 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday

    and 9am - 12noon Saturdays until 31 January 2015 inclusive. The centre will be closed on Monday 26 January for Australia Day.

    Municipal Offi ces and Customer Service Centres Sunshine and Keilor Municipal Offi ces and Brimbanks three Customer Service Centres will close on Wednesday 24 December at 12noon. Over the Christmas and New Year period the municipal offi ces and all customer service centres will open Monday 29, Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 December. The Watergardens Customer Service Centre will also open Saturday 27 December between 10am and 12.30pm. All offi ces and centres will be closed on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 December

    More than 150 Brimbank book buccaneers will let their imaginations lead the way during the school holidays by joining the Summer Reading Club.

    At the clubs official launch at Deer Park library on December 1, Adventure was unveiled as this years theme.

    Peter Pan and the notorious Captain Hook were on hand to show 35 avid young readers what adventure is all about.

    The Summer Reading Club is Brimbank libraries most popular program, with 981 young people registering for it in 2013.

    So far, 161 readers have registered for this summer.

    One of Brimbank councils administators, Jane Nathan, said the club would encourage

    young library customers to choose their own adventures and enjoy stories of dodging danger and outwitting evil.

    This annual national program is a great way to keep childrens reading skills active while having fun, she said.

    The club is open to readers aged five to 15. Registrations can be made at any of

    Brimbanks five libraries until January 31.All participants will receive a reading record

    and activity kit. Adventure activities will be held in January and a final event will be held on February 2 at Sydenham library.

    Kings Park is the only Brimbank suburb included in a new national roll-out plan announced by the NBN Co this month.

    The area is among 19 suburbs in Greater Melbourne where connection work will start this month.

    These suburbs cover an estimated 105,900 premises, which are scheduled to be connected by June 2016.

    The fact Kings Park is listed over surrounding areas is more for technical reasons than anything else, an NBN Co spokesman said.

    Generally, once weve built in an area, well move to a nearby area, and it just follows that process.

    The spokesman said the company could not confirm what kind of NBN service Kings Park would receive.

    Its to be advised, he said. Well get more information in coming months.

    More than a dozen Brimbank suburbs are still in the dark about when they can expect to be connected to high-speed broadband, with only some premises in Keilor East, Keilor Park and the Foundry site in Sunshine having the fibre in place.

    In April 2012, the proposed three-year roll-out map indicated work would begin in 14 suburbs, including Albanvale, Cairnlea, Deer Park, Kealba, Keilor Downs, St Albans, Sydenham and Taylors Lakes, by 2015.

    These plans were later removed from the companys website, with the NBN Co providing no additional details.

    Kings Park hits NBN jackpot

    Pharmacies provide the service most sought after by Brimbank residents, according to data from a Yellow Pages online survey.

    The survey showed that people in Brimbank search online for pharmaceutical services 50 per cent more often than the statewide average. Keilor Village Chemmart pharmacist Dino Sapuppo said of the finding: Im not surprised. Were a major growth corridor filled with young families, which means young kids and lots of trips to the doctors.

    Mr Sapuppo has co-owned the Old Calder Highway pharmacy for 18 years and says there has been a huge jump in the number of patients visiting his business daily.

    We look after more than 200 scripts a day. The business is very different to when I started, he said.

    Meanwhile, Melton has been revealed as the heart of healthcare across the state, with residents twice as likely to have a check-up compared with people in other parts of Victoria.

    Two men have been arrested and charged after a week-long drug sting in Sunshine late last month.

    Sergeant Paul Allen said police conducted a one-week operation around Clarke Street, Sunshine, following complaints from traders and the public about disruptive behaviour and drug dealing.

    Police arrested a 50-year-old Braybrook man and a 55-year-old man of no fixed address on Friday, November 28. They allege the men had about 80 grams of cannabis and $966 in cash between them.

    Both men appeared in Sunshine Magistrates Court on November 28 and again on December 1 charged with trafficking cannabis and possessing the proceeds of crime.

    They were refused bail.Sergeant Allen said police were pleased

    with the operation.The arrests came as Brimbank polices

    Inspector Chris Gilbert called on residents to report suspected drug labs, crop houses, large-scale trafficking and dealers in their area.

    Six drug labs were located in Brimbank in the 2013-14 financial year two in Sunshine and one each in Albanvale, Ardeer, St Albans and Delahey representing less than four per cent of all drug labs found across the state.

    The most common drug manufactured in the labs was amphetamine, commonly known as speed.

    The Federation Trail has been extended from Millers Road in Brooklyn to Fogarty Avenue, Yarraville.

    VicRoads metropolitan north-west regional director Adam McGuire said the $5.3 million extension, which included a new bridge over the Newport-Albion freight line, bridged the gap for cyclists and pedestrians while reducing travel times and conflict with trucks on local roads.

    The new, 124-metre bridge is wide enough and has ample space in both directions for cyclists and pedestrians to safely pass each other, he said. We would like to thank road users for their patience while we closed lanes on the West Gate Freeway to allow for the construction of the overpass and the safety barriers.

    Bicycle Network government and external relations general manager Chris Carpenter said the completion of the trail would benefit locals, cyclists and visitors.

    Its great news for riders Bicycle Network has been working with VicRoads since the 1980s on the Federation Trail, so to see it one step closer to completion is exciting for us, he said.

    It supports our vision to make bike riding easier for everyone.

    He said the trail connects riders in the south-west suburbs of metropolitan Melbourne and hopefully would encourage them to get active and get on their bikes.

    The project was first funded between 2009 and 2010 by the Brumby government.

    The next stages of the Federation Trail involve extending it from Fogarty Avenue to Williamstown Road and Hyde Street in Yarraville.

    Meet Santas little helpers. Holy Eucharist Primary School pupils are

    getting into the Christmas spirit by collecting presents for people in need.

    The school is taking part in St Vincent de Pauls Mini Vinnies program, which encourages Catholic primary school pupils to come together and help those in need by living their faith through action.

    Jayden Kretiuk, Yvonne Dang, Shirleen Nguyen and Anna Tran are among the grade 6 pupils who led the charge. They asked pupils from all years to donate gifts to hampers for men, women and children.

    Jayden said pupils had donated shoes,

    clothes, toys, books and toiletries. The donations have been divided into parcels and will be officially handed over to St Vincent de Paul during the grade 6 graduation ceremony later this month.

    Were doing it to help people less fortunate than us, Jayden said. We want everyone in the world to have a good Christmas.

    Support teacher Thilini Nanayakkara said pupils had been inspired to act after doing a social justice unit earlier this year and learning about families going through hardship.

    Sixty families in Deer Park face a bleak Christmas worrying whether they will be living in their homes in 1975.

    They face an announcement that Evington Holdings Pty. Ltd., which is paying a finance company for title to the homes, has gone into receivership.

    However, the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Jim Cairns, said he was looking at the possibility of making money available from the government.

    Urgently-needed Ministry of Housing homes are sitting empty in Albanvale.

    A member of a local residents group said last week some of the vacant homes had not been filled for some months.

    Albanvale, a housing estate between Deer Park and St Albans, has 1300 properties. About a quarter of those are Housing Ministry houses, according to the secretary of the Albanvale Residents Association, Clare Brennan.

    Sunshine will get cinemas, a Big W store and a new-style Safeway after Woolworths Ltd bought two-thirds of the Sunshine Harvester site for $10 million.

    By next March, Woolworths will submit plans for the $70 million project, which will involve up to 50 shops.

    Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 1995 and be completed by mid-1996.

    The ALP internal report on branch stacking by former premier John Cain is seen by some members as an embarrassment to the Labor Union (Right) in its struggle for dominance.
