    Teddy Bear HospitalDoes your Teddy have a runny nose? A broken bone? A sore tummy?The hiccups? A funny cough? A headache or perhaps a broken heart?If so, maybe you need a Teddy Bear Doctor! The Teddy Bear Hospital will be visiting Deer Park Library on Tuesday 9 December from 1 to 2.30pm. The hospital is run by volunteer University of Melbourne medical, nursing and physiotherapy students. Bring your Teddy for a check-up at the Teddy Bear Hospital and help your child overcome their fear of doctors and hospitals.

    Asbestos Concerns in Sunshine North - Open HouseAn Open House to discuss Asbestos concerns in Sunshine North will be held on Wednesday 10 December from 47pm at Victoria University Convention Centre, 460 Ballarat Road, Sunshine.

    Representatives from the EPA, Department of Health, other state agencies and Brimbank City Council will be on hand to answer questions from the community and provide further information about recent testing of homes near the former Wunderlich factory in Sunshine North.

    Brimbank Leisure Centres are getting into the festive spirit

    With a special 12 Days of Christmas promotion which will include a visit from Santa on Friday 19 December.

    Twelve Days of Christmas will run at the Sunshine and St Albans leisure centres from Monday 8 December, with each day marking a new promotion, discount, competition or celebration for centre members and visitors.

    Next Ordinary Council MeetingTuesday 9 December, 7pm at the Keilor Municipal Offi ces, Old Calder Highway, Keilor.

    Brimbank Libraries invites children and young people aged 5-16 to take part in this years Summer Reading Club over the summer school holidays.

    The Summer Reading Club is Brimbank Libraries most popular program with 981 young people registering for the program last year, and we invite 5-16 year-olds to sign up this year as well.

    The theme for this years event is Adventure, and children who

    participate will be encouraged to explore adventure fi ction.

    We will be encouraging our young library customers to choose their own adventures from Brimbank library shelves and enjoy stories of dodging danger, outwitting evil enemies, and journeying beyond their wildest imaginations.

    This annual national program encourages children to read over the summer holidays to maintain and improve literacy and reading skills, and is a great way to keep childrens reading skills active while having fun over the summer break.

    Registration and Activity Kits

    Registration for the Summer Reading Club opens on Monday 1 December 2014

    and ends on Saturday 31 January 2015. Registrations can be made at any of Brimbanks fi ve libraries.

    Everyone who registers will receive a reading record and activity kit, and participants will be awarded small prizes for encouragement such as stickers, tattoos, bookmarks, key rings and silicone wristbands. The major prize to be awarded this year will be valued at $200. Five other lucky entrants will win a prize valued at $40 each.

    Activities and Finale

    Fun adventure activities will be held in January 2015, and a fi nale event to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Club will be held on Monday 2 February at Sydenham Library.

    A dollar here, a five-dollar note there staff at Coles Taylors Hill know a little bit of money can go a long way. The store has raised more than $16,000 for Redkite, a national charity providing financial, emotional and practical support to children and young people with cancer and their families. Now its been named one of Australias top 20 fundraising Coles stores. Coles Taylors Hill employee Robyn Mulders led the charge during the fundraiser, which included a series of barbecues and raffles and the sale of Redkite fundraising cards. Store manager Tony Baldassarro said staff were thrilled by the generosity of their customers. He said the store had recently also raised $1700 in a single day for cancer support group Canteens national Bandanna Day.     Twelve students from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College flew out to Cambodia last week for a three-week World Challenge expedition. Students will spend time in Phnom Penh where they will embrace the local culture, visit an orphanage to teach pupils English, repair a school classroom and trek through jungle. Emily Bailey, 14, said she was nervous about the expedition but extremely excited by the great learning opportunity. My expectations [are] to see a very different world or environment compared to what Im used to. World Challenge, a publicly-listed company that organises school visits to developing countries, is responsible for 275 projects in such countries each year. Last year it renovated more than 130 classrooms, created 25 community vegetable gardens and helped conserve endangered species at 20 sites. Louisa Maggio

    Brimbank council has extended the Boral Recycling companys current landfill services deed for a further two years.

    Brimbank council infrastructure and environment director Paul Younis said at last weeks council meeting that Boral had met all criteria under the councils procurement policy.

    The estimated yearly contract for the disposal of about 53,000 tonnes of waste from Brimbank is tipped to be worth $5.6 million.

    Deer Park resident and former Brimbank councillor Marion Martin said she was disappointed in the council administrators decision. They dont live here so it doesnt worry them, she said. Thats why wed be better off with councillors; at least theyre from the area so they understand what the impact is.

    Ms Martin believes the state government should be encouraging companies to find alternative ways to dispose of rubbish.

    If we have to pay extra, so be it. We shouldnt have to live like a Third World country with these intolerable smells wafting through constantly, she said.

    I cant believe theyre continuing to do this in the middle of a growth corridor.

    Former Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said she wasnt surprised the contract had been renewed.

    What the community is even more interested in is its possible expansion. We are

    all completely against it.Boral put forward a proposal in May to

    expand the landfill site at Ravenhall by 179 million cubic metres.

    The Melton council received more than 6600 written objections to that proposal.

    Boral waste solutions general manager Richard McCarthy confirmed Boral would lodge a new application later this year to extend the landfill.

    [We] look forward to continuing to work

    with the community to develop this essential infrastructure and we welcome any further opportunities for genuine community engagement, Mr McCarthy said.

    With only one month to go before the year closes, its likely Boral will lodge its new application by February next year.

    Its just hanging over our heads. People are trying to sell their properties and move elsewhere in case it goes through, Mrs Martin said.

    [Boral] were trying to push for it to happen before Christmas, but I think theyve realised its not going to happen. Its unfair to spring that kind of thing on the community at the busiest time of year.

    Sunshine Citys health department has been swamped with requests for courses of polio vaccine. Last Wednesday afternoon when The Advocate hit the streets with the news of Sunshines first polio victim in 15 years, residents jammed switchboards at City Hall and extra staff had to be called to cope with queues at the counter.

    A years supply of consent cards, which have to be signed before vaccine can be given, was used within hours.

    Unemployed single mothers with little education are increasingly becoming the poorest and most oppressed citizens of the western suburbs. They are surviving on pensions and emergency relief in the form of food, clothing and furniture handouts.

    The hard facts come from charity and government organisations in Altona, Werribee, Footscray and Sunshine and follow on from a survey conducted by the Mission of St James and St John.

    These three youngsters are among upwards of 100 who will benefit from this years Fairfax Community Newspapers appeal for gifts of toys for western suburbs children.

    The children are from families being helped by St Anthonys Family Service in Footscray. Sister Kathleen McSweeny, of St Anthonys, said most of the families being helped barely had enough money to buy food and essentials.

    Community demands for a third pool in the first phase of the Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre redevelopment are expected to be debated at tonights meeting of the swimming pool focus group.
