Why are we learning this?
Introduction to Art - EL 1086 provides us with a comprehensive list of art vocabulary terms.
Understanding these terms and their significance in art is essential to your development as a cultured,
educated individual.
When you learn these terms, you’ll feel comfortable speaking about all types of artworks and how
they influence and reflect culture and society!
Each unit of study is divided into individual topics. There are 60 topics in this full-year course.
You will have three class days to complete
each topic.

*Extra Credit Scavenger Hunt Activity.
Task- For each topic, choose 3 of the “Vocabulary Words” from the list provided.
For each Vocabulary Word, use Google to search for an artwork that demonstrates the word.
Note: Don’t just choose the first image you see! Look through the search results and find an artwork that best exemplifies each Vocabulary Word.
*Extra Credit Scavenger Hunt Activity Instructions
Every three class days, for each topic you learn, there will be an accompanying “Scavenger Hunt Activity.”
This additional activity is designed to help assess your comprehension of vocabulary terms and their usage.
Clicking on the “Vocabulary” tab will open a pop-
up window containing a list of vocabulary terms for
the current topic (see right). Click on each term to
see the term’s definition and its usage in a
sentence.
You can also “Play the Definition” and “Play the
Sentence” to have them read aloud to you.
Note: There are 6 Vocabulary Words in the example shown at right:
Create a new document in Google Docs, Google Slides, Power Point, or Microsoft Word for each topic.
Then, copy and paste or drag the 3 images into the document. Arrange the images neatly on the page. Leave space for your sentences that use the Vocabulary Words. (See this page for examples.) Write 1-2 sentences describing how the artwork you chose relates to the vocabulary term.
Use "because" to explain your thoughts.

Examples:
imagery- Imagery is found in the Lascaux caves
because the paintings show a variety of animals
that were hunted for food, shelter and clothing.
texture- Because the surface of the the cave wall
is rough, it added texture to the animal paintings,
symmetry- Symmetry is present in the Taj Mahal because when
split down the middle, both sides are the same on either side of a
center line.
mausoleum- Because Shah Jahan so loved his wife Mumtaz Mahal,
The Taj Mahal was built as a mausoleum to honor her.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting!
Day 3 - Review the Tutorial and take the Quiz on the topic.
