CELEBRATING

Welcome to the Golden Anniversary issue of Building Services News, marking 50 years of continuous publication. Over the last half-century thejournal has evolved in tandem with developments and innovations in theindustry, not just reflecting those changes but also helping to promote themand spearhead their acceptance.

Right from the outset Building Services News has been an integral part ofIreland’s building services industry and not just a magazine serving the sector.Publisher and Editor Pat Lehane sits on the executive of most of the industryprofessional and trade representative bodies and the journal has beeninstrumental in the establishment of many of these organisations.

In addition, Building Services News plays a major role in promoting andfacilitating cross-over activity between these bodies, and provides secretariatsupport and accommodation addresses for many. It also guides and championsmany industry causes, coordinating joint activities into lobbying and petitioninggroups to act on behalf of the industry as a whole.

Building Services News provides the industry with saturation coverage of thebuilding services sector. It is available in three formats – the print edition whichis posted directly to individually-named industry personnel; the web edition, which is freely available to all; and the Facebook page, which is inter-linked with the web edition.

To all of you participating with us in this celebratory golden anniversaryedition we say thank you. A small number of you have been dealing with thepublication since day one, while many others have been trading partners for aconsiderable number of years. Of course there are also those of you who have

joined us in recent years. In marking the occasion our collective vision should, and is, on the future.

In perusing the archives spanning 50 years we now realise how lucky we are to be part of such a vibrant, dynamic industry sector. In the early days the role of building services was perhaps under-rated by society in general.

Today, that has changed. Rising energy costs, a demand for more comfortable home and working environments, and a genuine sense of social responsibility in respect of the environment has put building services centre stage. What an opportunity –the future for the industry is bright and secure!

However, commercial success is only part of the story. The building services sector is also very much about people, and about a work/social interactive balance. We havebeen lucky to have made many friends down through the years. Sadly, some of them are no longer with us.

We dedicate this issue to their memory.

Underpinning this approach is a philosophy based not on“conditioning” buildings but on“comfort conditioning for people”.Panasonic calls it Human Conditioning(HC). Seasonally efficientdesignDaikin is leading the industry drive for“seasonal efficiency” as the method to rate heating and cooling products basedon their energy efficiency calculated overan entire year.

Seasonal efficiency is an initiative of the EU’s Energy Related Products Directive (the so-called Eco-designDirective) and specifies the minimum Eco-design requirements thatmanufacturers must integrate into their energy-using products.

All Daikin products are designed forseasonal efficiency. That makes them moreenergy efficient while, at the same time, emitting fewer CO2 emissions.

The new Seasonal Efficiency energylabeling indicates the energy efficiency of the product from A+, A, B etc. It alsostates the sound emissions of the unit.

Refrigerants – leadingby exampleDaikin has already introduced equipmentthat uses R32 and additional productsusing the gas will come on stream duringthe coming year.

It also advises customers to take accountof indirect CO2 emissions generated duringthe total lifecycle of a product, and not justthe GWP of the refrigerant.

Awards RecognitionDaikin has won many prestigious industry awards downthrough the years, one of the latest being the RAC HeatPump Product of the Year Award 2014 for the Altherma

hybrid heat pump. This innovative unit is a hybrid heat pump which is a combination of a high efficiency gas

combi boiler and renewable energy air-to-water heat pump. The heat pump and gas boiler work in series with the

most efficient heat source kicking in depending on theoperating mode. High temperature and low temperatureoptions are available to suit all kinds and sizes ofproperties.

Latest addition to the range is the Altherma Flex Type, aunique new heat pump solution for apartment buildingsand collective housing.

VRV PioneersDaikin first invented the revolutionary Variable RefrigerantVolume (VRV) technology in 1982. Since then it has continuedto lead the way and is now developing its fourth generation ofVRV systems, delivering the ultimate in climate comfort, energyefficiency and control.

Breakthrough innovations such as VRV heat recoverysystems have enhanced comfort and versatility even further byrecovering heat extracted from the cooling process to deliverfree heat for hot water and air curtains.

Today the latest VRV solutions provide year-round heating, cooling, ventilation and hot water, as well as open-door aircurtains and user-friendly controls for all kinds of commercialand community buildings.

Demand Grundfos iSolutionsfor a better environment Grundfos pumps have been available inIreland since the rural electrification ofthe late 1950s, first through a distributor but then from a wholly-owned subsidiaryestablished in 1984.

Down through the years the operation hasgrown considerably in tandem with its ever-increasing market share and today represents a25-strong, engineering-led team of specialists. The age profile is quite mixed with newly-qualified, dynamic engineers working veryclosely with experienced personnel who havein excess of 25 years service with the company.

They in turn work very closely with anetwork of approved mechanical servicesproviders and leading merchant outlets tobring an expansive range of pumping solutions

to clients. The products and systems that make up these solutions incorporatepioneering technologies that ensure optimumperformance while being sustainable andenergy efficient.

While much has been made of theintroduction of the ErP Directive in relation to pumps in January 2013, Grundfos hadanticipated these legislative changes well inadvance. Its current portfolio represents adiverse range of products and systems thathave already taken the strengths and values of traditional pump technology and moved them into the digital age.

So, irrespective of the scale of the project or the application involved, Grundfos has the answer.

Econet The components in Fläkt Woods’innovative Econet system are connectedtogether to provide a more reliableand more efficient AHU system. Heatrecovery, heating and cooling are allintegrated into a common circuit asheating/cooling coils, pumps, valves, pipe systems, insulation, etc.

The result is a shorter and morecompact ventilation unit. This is highlybeneficial from an environmentalpoint of view as much less energy isused to transport the air throughunnecessary components.

Further development of theprinciple of energy recovery has alsoled to increases in efficiency of 80%compared with traditional coilrecovery systems. The standard Econet can achieve this figure.

Copper best for environmentAn independent survey commissioned by Mueller Europerevealed that most householders, and installers, prefercopper tube. It provides a comfort factor for homeownersbecause of the way that it is fitted through soldering, andbecause of its durability and very long lifespan. Copper isalso seen as the safest in the face of weather extremes.

For installers it is strong and reassuring, yet adaptable andeasy to work with. The fact that it produces a permanent and secure fit safeguards the integrity of the entire systemand helps eliminate wasteful and costly call-backs.

Both householders and installers alike cited the importanceof the recyclability of copper. To help boost the recyclabilityof the material even further, Mueller Europe has invested inequipment that strips off the polyethylene coating thatprotects copper tubing from environments which could beharmful to the material when installed for hot and coldwater services, gas services, sanitation and central heating.

Understanding LED LED Store will help you better understandthe principles behind LED lighting. It willexplain to you the exciting potential itpresents, not just for aesthetic and comfort“white light” levels, but also the infinitecolour-changing options it entails.

This education theme is replicated on thevibrant LED Store website where dynamicand exciting videos, couched in easy-to-understand terminology, bring LEDtechnology, and its huge potential, to life.

Whether you are a designer, specifier, contractor or end-user, LED Store is a must- visit destination.

What is Led Lighting? LED lamps are solid-state lamps that uselight-emitting diodes as the light source. While the initial costs are higher thanfluorescent and incandescent lamps, LEDshave longer life, high energy efficiency andoffer an infinite variety of lighting andcolour-changing options.

LED lighting is also extremely flexible inthat it can be configured for all manner ofexternal and internal lighting applications.

Driver-free LED In the early days LED lighting comprised twoelements – the actual fitting and the driverrequired to change the DC current to AC. Iffailures occurred it was often down to thedriver failure rather than the actual LED.

That problem is now a thing of the pastwith the advent of the latest innovation inLED technology that has seen the driverreplaced by a computer chip that isintegrated into the LED fitting.

It has continuously recruited technically-experienced and customer-focussed personnel, as well as developing its own young dynamic sales and service team.

This commitment to quality products, market-leading brands and quality service has remainedsteadfast and, apart from underpinning its successto date, is the foundation upon which all futuresuccess will be built.
