Outstanding Sportsmanship AwardKaren Scott has owned Belgians for 43 years. What started out as a quest to get a little boy the pure bred dog of his dreams turned out to be a lifelong passion. And in that passion is a cause for which Karen is a primary cheerleader. Karen will tell you that each dog she has owned holds a special piece of her heart, especially one unique rescue boy, Oz. She will tell you that each dog came into her life for a purpose and reason that can only be identified in hindsight. But, to the outside world, her heart is simply overflowing with the dozens upon dozens of rescue Belgians she has aided.

Karen’s life in the “world of dogs” began in 2005 with Cole. Cole was her first of many firsts – grand champion – nationally ranked, OB top dog, skilled at tracking, herding and messenger dog. Her current dog, Ransom, is known to many as ‘Handsome Ransom’ and, indeed, he has shown how handsome he is as he has trotted around the rings to his championship. And, while Karen is ringside cheering him on, she is also cheering on her fellow exhibitors with constant quiet words of encouragement and compliments about their dogs. She is one of the first to congratulate the winners or is gracious about accepting congratulations, and, at Nationals, she does this just before she returns to the rescue raffle room.

Outstanding Sportsmanship AwardKaren was one of the volunteers who took the reins of BSDRT in 2014 and continues at the helm today. In this role, Karen has faced a huge responsibility in respecting the history of our breed and honoring its future. She has never compromised in her commitment to follow through with a referred dog, from initial contacts and identification, to placement and following up on placements years later. They are always her charges, in her eyes, and their well-being and safety is her first priority.

The large spread of Rescue Raffle baskets the club has grown accustomed to is largely thanks to Karen’s efforts. Each year she solicits donations to help in the cost of rescuing Belgian Sheepdogs. She designs heartwarming displays to update the members about dogs that have come into the system and show where they are now. And, she is always quietly manning the rescue room, ready to answer any questions and welcome newcomers.

In her role with BSDRT, she has also lived up to the highest degree of discretion and confidentiality as she more often deals with delicate situations that are full of emotion for members and non-members alike. Not only has she guided her rescued dogs through a difficult process, she has also helped many, many former owners and adopters cope with a range of emotions that accompanies moving a dog into and out of rescue.

Outstanding Sportsmanship AwardKaren has faithfully turned in a detailed report each year, published with the annual meeting minutes. In it, she has given the membership a glimpse of the enormity of her volunteer job. She dedicates hours upon hours to helping

Belgian Sheepdogs and their owners wherever they are in this country. And, that is on top of the time she takes for competition and ambassadorship.

To Karen, the sport of pure-bred dogs goes beyond the actual ring and into the protection of the pure bred dogs she loves. Her sense of honesty, courtesy and integrity extend from in ring competition to grappling with the

intricacies of removing a dog from a negative situation. She has stood by and

lived by the AKC and BSCA Code of Ethics as an exhibitor and trustee. The all-around welfare of the Belgian Sheepdog has become her life’s work.

OFA Champion of HealthThe OFA Champion of Health Committee recommended that GCH Hobbiton’s Song of Solomon of Laralee be accorded this year’s winner based on longevity, CHIC, demonstrated capacity both in the conformation and performance venues and produced progeny with the same.

2018 BSCA National Specialty Best in Puppy Sweeps & Best of WinnersDibs is a fun partner in everything! I have thrown Obedience, Agility, Scent Work, Service Dog Training, Puppy Sitter, Therapy Dog, and Protector at him. He calls DIBS on all the venues and sports! He is a Super Cuddler to all who will have him in their laps! His only downfall is his handler because she is not always 100% mobile. He is slowly learning to run with others and has decided that it is fun and that it doesn’t always have to be “all about mom.” He filled a huge void in my heart and I can’t believe that 4 years have gone by so quickly. I wish he could do more conformation, but he is over halfway to his MACH, just needing those elusive Double Q’s. We will plug along down that road, having fun all the way whether we Q or not. Thank you, Renee, for this awesome dog.

Cassie is a dog that no one tends to notice. She doesn’t cause problems. She doesn’t make a fuss. She takes what comes her way and makes the best of it. She is a lover, the dog that wants to be on everyone’s lap. When she does something she does it right. She is a second-generation ROM recipient and earned her ROM in just two litters. She produced multiple champions and performance dogs in both litters. Like Cassie, her kids love to please their owners. We are thankful to the studs and their owners for letting us breed to them. We are extremely thankful to the owners of Cassie’s offspring for all the hard work they put into her puppies to earn those titles.

We could not have accomplished this without all their efforts.

Usher and I started our RACH journey last summer, and we are hoping to complete it at this year’s National. He enjoys working and we have a lot of fun in the ring. I will often laugh and comment to him or myself about something silly we are doing as we work through the course. I am sure folks think I am nuts! We have received several High Combined and High Triple Scoring ribbons.

We are very fortunate to have this very loving, hardworking dog!!

Wow! A mazing ride! I was so surprised that Peyton earned her HOF so quickly when I entered the fall specialties, let alone that she would earn both her HOF and Grand Championship. Earning both titles within one year. 16 HOF points from the classes! At only 2.5 years old, it was the icing on the cake: She finished 2020 as the #1 BSD and #3 BSD in both Breed and All Breed systems with limited showing. My husband is amazed that I can get her to stand still. That said, it goes without saying Peyton is full of energy! She has SPARKLE, along with being a wonderful companion and family member. She also has 2 Rally legs. I would like to say thank you to Philippe Suter and Lucy Fluckinger for allowing her to live with me.

Buying a puppy as a companion for their daughter led the Modicafamily on a journey they didn’t expect! This litter, by GCHB Ch Doerun’s Xing A Song By Sumerwynd x Ch Amethyst The Color Purple, whelped in New Jersey after I (Barb) moved to Georgia. By the time I came to see the puppies, both males were gone. I didn’t see this boy, now called Duke, until he was 9 months old. I remember asking Mike, “WHY did you sell him!!?” As with many boys, he took his time maturing and when he was ready, Mike and Sue Reed and Duke’s family, Joe, Jackie and Jordyn Modica, started this adventure. 13 weeks later Duke became a Grand Champion! Duke is deeply loved and cared for to perfection!! I told Jackie, one of the first times I spoke with her, that, because of his registered name, he had huge “shoes” to fill. He filled them well. My Lorjen Gunsmoke, wasn’t a breed Champion but did well in Obedience. It took 35 years, but Duke is my first HOF dog. I will always be grateful to Sue and Mike Reed and the Modica family for making this happen.

4 years ago I brought Diamond home from Switzerland. Right from the get go, he was a confident pup with a wonderful temperament. He is smart, fast, agile, and loves competing. However, being taller than I’d hoped, negotiating tight AKC courses has been a challenge. In 2019, he earned his first MACH and qualified for the AKC Invitational where he won 4 of his 5 runs. He also qualified for the 2020 Nationals, which were canceled. Last year, with limited trialing due to Covid, we managed to earn MACH2 and #1 Top Dog BSD, as well as qualifying for and competing at the 2020 Agility Invitational. We are looking forward to more normal times, and running at this year’s Nationals in Tulsa.

Glider, my first Belgian Sheepdog, was 4 months old when she joined our family of 2 Aussies. She is, and continues to be, a very quirky, but lovable, dog. As a pup, she loved to work and train. However, competitions and unfamiliar places were, and are, very difficult for her. With continued confidence building and perseverance, Glider has excelled beyond my dreams. She has qualified for the AKC Invitational in 2014-2020. In 2016, she won 1st Place in the 24-inch division. In 2018, at the AKC Nationals in Reno, we placed 3rd in 24-inch division. She has been the #1 Top Dog BSD from 2014-2019. Last year, pre-Covid, Glider earned her final MACH17. She will now continue to run in Preferred Agility for as long as she enjoys it, maybe earning her AGCH title.

Her favorite thing is to snuggle on the bed with me, putting her head on my right shoulder/arm.

We got Soldier when he was almost two years old. We were his fourth home. Soldier had some “rough edges” to smooth out but he is very bright and loves to learn new things. Soldier has earned many titles in a number of sports in addition to Rally. We are currently working towards AKC Excellent Scent Work and Utility titles. Soldier has amazed us with his intelligence, sense of humor, and loving heart.

He has made us fall in love with the Belgian Sheepdog breed.

On show days, as soon as I open the tailgate on the van, he rushes out the front door, does that last minute mark on his favorite bush and flies into his crate, ready to go. He is protective of me, sensing danger, putting himself between the threat and me, and staring down the threat. He did this for me at a rest area, prompting the aggressor to actually say, “He really knows his job.” I replied, “Yes, he does!” He is a joyous dog and a delight to live with. Thank you God of Belgians for gifting him to me. He is a dream come true. Hoping his progeny get the best he has to give to the whelping box.

Havana is my first Belgian Sheepdog. She was imported from Hungary out of an inter-variety breeding. Her pedigree is special to me as she goes back to my first Belgian Ozee de la Prairie de la Sommerau. Havana has excelled in everything she has participated in. She finished her breed championship (with her only defeat) when she was awarded Reserve Winners Bitch at the BSCA National under Sharon Redmer. Havana was the #2 Belgian Sheepdog in Agility for calendar years 2018, 2019, and 2020. Havana was the #1 Belgian Sheepdog for the Agility Invitational for 2019 and 2020 and the #4 Invitational Belgian Sheepdog for 2018, the year she had puppies. In 4 years of showing, Havana has earned 10 Master Agility Titles (750 speed points and 20 QQ’s for each MACH). On most days, she can be found chasing squirrels with her daughter NV.

The standard for a Belgian Sheepdog states that they reflect the qualities of intelligence, courage, alertness, and devotion to master. This describes Willow perfectly. Willow exhibits all of these qualities and more. Willow is my first Belgian and is a great ambassador for the breed. Willow enjoys all performance sports, especially herding. She is, and always has been, willing to try anything. She is an incredible therapy dog to the elderly and other dogs. Most of all, Willow loves to hang out with us and has many dog (and cat) friends too.
