most noteworthy is CS 469, the weekly CS gathering in Room at The Top, RaTT.
This tradition lives on today!
believe it or not, I was their System Man-
ager while still completing my degree.
The “google” of our era. I didn’t think I had the tech chops to work here - like some of my fellow-grads. but, I ventured over to their offices near the Legislature to visit
Ted allen (bSc. ‘87). When I went to retrieve two Cokes from the vending machine, I ran into derek who asked if I wanted to replace the gal who just left their accounting
department. first experience with being laid off.
This was a

Married donna.
We met at a party at Chuck’s. I
was dating Chuck’s

Our team moved to Victoria. Job was great - worked with
my friends.
Jim met his wife at a party at my
place, he was dating my former
girlfriend at the time.
Started in the test group for the compilers,
promoted to work on fortan compiler, linker and loader (to fix bugs
in the code). Left for Ca in May 1990, same year
Myrias went under.
Summer before I went to grad school - tested the Myrias assembler (written by gilles Chartrand, bSc ‘84).
I remember writing a bug report where I put a comment that said “this space for rent”. dan Wilson
(bSc. ‘80), founder of Myrias, thought that was hilariously funny...
Started as a soft-ware developer.
Worked really well with clients - pro-
moted to manage-ment within a year.
hired Marcel.
Apple Computer.Cupertino, CA
Started as an intern and stayed for 8 years.
Visited and worked in 15 different countries.
This was my first exposure to a start-up
and the heartbreak of a company that met with
financial despair.
Met Derek and Brent in Lister Hall. When I first walked into
their room, instead of clothes in their
closet they had beer stacked from floor
to ceiling!

MBA, Thunderbird
School of Global Management. Phoenix, AZ
On contract for IbM while CS was also developing their own pC LaN based email system, Network Cou-rier (acquired by Microsoft in ‘91). In ‘94 the co. moved to Redmond Wa.
That was the year I moved coun-tries, got married and had a son.
I had 10 awesome years leading software development and test teams
and working with many of Cisco’s higher-end routing products.
Took over open-source (Lustre), hired 55 staff in 6 countries. Lots of international travel.
Sold to Intel day before second anniversary.
This was around y2k - there was a big hiring surge. I had
to move to the US and I could live anywhere near an airport. I picked the bay area because
Lance, Rob, brent & derek were there. Oracle took over
peopleSoft in 2005. No plans of joining Oracle for a third time.
Joined Myrias ex pats. The fun was short-lived, they
closed the division a year later.
Started as employee #15. Worked on Unix/Linux/Mac user security and privilege
management. Centrify survived the financial crisis of 2008 - 2010
and is still going strong.
Smitten with the idea of exploring the southern USa and bitten by the networking bug.
Took a few Mba courses
at U of T... but I was too busy working & having
fun :-)
The company was acquired by Sage, a Uk based company. I worked in California for 9 years. Sr. Vp in
charge of IT and Cus-tomer Services.)
I moved to Van-couver, bC when Sage
acquired a com-pany there (aCCpaC). I transferred to lead in-tegration and manage
acquired division.
Canadian tech start- up success story. Their uncon-trolled growth led to lots
of problems with customer support. I was hired to turn things around. The
company was eventually acquired by Symantec.
helped some ‘Myrioids’ find
work here, and it’s the only job I ever
resigned from.
‘Travelling IT gnome.’ I’m never actually
in the bay area.
With every
employer change, I changed
industries.
followed amdahl ex patriots to super-secret startup. first experience
with a dedicated corp chef and great food. MicroUnity
filed for bankruptcy in 1996.
My first layoff - but my ten years there were some of the most enjoyable of my career. you have ‘rock star’ status and everyday was interesting. The programming, and the people - artists, musicians,
creative talent and the subject matter experts -pro-fessional athletes, movie stars & directors, models,
race car drivers... It was hard work though. I got reacquainted with all-nighters (fondly remembered all-nighters with the guys - how much we bonded.)
This startup focused on web site security and user login
management. I got to see the internet boom and bust from the inside. The company lost 50% of it’s value in one day.
I was wanting to keep the
start-up vibe going.
big regret, not joining forces with
ebay. We were across the road
from pixar, but we were there first.
Started out as a low-level consul-
tant, rose four posi-tions in two years - became known
as the fixer and the client whisperer.
Consulting services for peopleSoft and Oracle clients
- my intro to the world of small business. I re-purposed the
name from a defunct consulting company I started in university
with Ted allen (bSc. ‘87) and george Rudelich (bSc. ‘87)
program Manager in the Microsoft CRM team. I needed a change and was becoming
more interested in online business and customer management so I moved from the
Microsoft Exchange team to the Microsoft CRM team. after a year there I decided to
leave to become an entrepreneur.

In a start-up you are always defining your role and pushing the bound-
