UW MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING BS/MS degree program The BS/MS program allows students to complete the MSE Program with a non-thesis/project based master’s degree. In special cases, the students will complete a thesis. The goal of the BS/MS program in Materials Science and Engineering is to provide a direct route to the MS degree for well-qualified undergraduate students who wish for in-depth graduate-level work. The purpose of the BS/MS program is to create a more efficient and continuous academic program to complete a master’s degree. The greater depth of the program will better prepare students for both industry and for Ph.D. programs. This program will support the industrial demand for MS degreed graduates. The program is designed to enable students to earn both BS and MS degrees in 5 years. Review Process The MSE Graduate Committee will review the applications and will make offers to the top 5 candidates. The other competitive applicants who don’t meet the top 5 are generally waitlisted and offered admission to the Applied Master’s Program in MSE. The ones who aren’t as competitive will still be considered for the Applied Master’s Program. Application Procedure Current MSE undergraduate students may apply to enter the BS/MS program at the start of their senior year, after completion of the MSE junior core courses. Requirements for application include: Completed application, including the signature of their faculty advisor. Unofficial copy of UW transcript - UW/MSE GPA of 3.4 or higher is required at the time of application. Your transcript should show completion of MSE junior core courses. Personal Statement Please be advised that having the minimum GPA does not guarantee an offer an admission into the BS/MS program. If your GPA is below a 3.4 you can still submit an application. It just might be held for review after your GPA improves in a later quarter. Students accepted into the BS/MS program by the department will then apply to the graduate school following acceptance into the program and while in their senior year. BS/MS Requirements: Requirements are the same as for our standard BS and MS programs. However, up to 6 credits of APPROVED 500 level courses taken as an undergraduate beyond the BS requirements may be counted towards the MS degree if completed in the quarter just prior to enrollment in the MS program. These credits would be transferred to the graduate program when the student enters as a graduate student, subject to the approval of the MSE Graduate Program Committee. Overall degree requirements will be 180 credits for the BS program, plus 36 credits for the MS program, for a total of 216 credits. BS/MS Research Students admitted into the BS/MS program will combine their BS senior project requirement (MSE 499) with the MS research requirement (MSE 600) and will begin their research starting Summer or Autumn Quarter following their senior year. This needs to get worked out with the student’s faculty advisor and the Graduate Program Advisor should be informed of this plan. The student will receive 4 credits of MSE 499 for the undergraduate portion of the research program, then register for 9 or more credits of MSE 600 for the research requirement. Written and oral reports are required to complete the 499 credits, to be submitted before the end of the senior year. A final research project and presentation is required for the completion of the MS degree. You will register for MSE 598 when completing your final project. Typical course and research progression for the BS/MS degree Students admitted to the BS/MS program typically will have 45 or fewer credits remaining in his/her BS program requirements at the beginning of the senior year. There are 36 credits that are required to be completed to earn a master’s degree. SAMPLE Outline
