Current Scenario

• Too much Lumbering led to deforestation & Soil Erosion

• Deforestation has made Environmental Impact

• Govt. Ban on Tree cutting

• Scarcity of Timber

• Rise in Timber cost & increased Log Imports

• Close down of Plywood Units

• Search for an Alternate for Timber

• Led to several new Technologies

• Bamboo proved to be the most suitable alternate

Why Bamboo?

• Bamboo is fast renewable plant - maturity cycle of 3-4 years .

• Plantation requires minimal capital investment and builds upon theinherent plant-cultivation skills of local farmers and foresters.

• Bamboos can be harvested annually and non-destructively.

• Bamboos excellent for rejuvenating degraded lands and protectingagainst soil erosion.

• Bamboos may easily be intercropped with shallow-rooted crops.

• All parts of the bamboo plant can be used in rural livelihoods - shoots for food, leaves for fodder, and branches for items such as broomsand for firewood.

Bamboo vs. Wood

Bamboo is an attractive naturalresource compared to foresthardwoods.

• Bamboo offers good potential for

processing it into composites as awood substitute.

• Bamboo Boards can replace Timber/Plywood in many applications such as

furniture, doors & windows and theirframes, partitions, wardrobes, cabinets, flooring etc.

Rural Involvement

• Each Bamboo Board Plant requires about 2000 Mats per day• One person can weave about 5 Mats per day• Each Industry requires about 400 people every day to supply Mats• Other Bamboo related Industries also has such Employment Potential

This indicates the huge Employment potential of Bamboo Industry

A Step Forward

• For success of this industry govt. should take initiatives

• Govt. should set up exemplary Bamboo Projects to attract more

Entrepreneurs

• Indian Technological Institutions should take up research projects to

develop new technologies for better Bamboo cultivation & processing• Financial Institutions should give attractive offer for Investors starting

up Bamboo Projects

• The Indigenous expertise for plant & machinery should be developedinstead of Imports to enable low cost machinery availability
