BIOS Setup is a program used to set up the hardware environment, including memory, hard disksand floppy disk drive.This PC has been configured with the minimum required settings at the factory.Additional settings are necessary if:• You set a password to allow a specific user to use the PC.• You change the resource settings.• You release or change the power-saving mode (the PC enters the standby state to use the

minimum power when not operating for a specified time).• You are prompted to start up BIOS Setup during self-diagnosis.• You use another OS.

�� Point• Your settings during BIOS Setup are stored in the CMOS RAM memory of the PC. The CMOS

RAM data is held by the built-in battery power. If a BIOS setup error message appears againwhen you turn the PC power on or when you restart the PC after you have completed BIOSsetup, the CMOS RAM data may have been lost. Contact a Fujitsu Service Center or yourretailer for repair.

CAUTIONWhen replacing the battery, be sure to install it with the polarities in the correct position. Dangerof explosion if battery is replaced with incorrect type or is mistreated. Do not recharge, disassembleor dispose of in fire. Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by themanufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

1 Save your current data and exit all application programs.

2 Restart the PC.• Windows 2000 model: Choose the Start, Shutdown, Restart, and OK.• Windows NT model: Choose the Start, Shutdown, Restart the computer, and Yes.

3 When “<F2>BIOS Setup/<F12>Boot Menu” appears at the bottom of thescreen, press the [F2] key.The BIOS Setup screen will appear.

Definitions

Displays the system information. Press the [Esc] key to return to the setupmenu.

Select “Get Default Values” from the Exit menu, and change the following settings.You need not change other settings.

• Windows 2000 mode system:• Choose the Power and ACPI S3, and set the ACPI S3 to “Disabled.”• Choose the Main, Boot Options, and Quiet Boot, and set the Quiet Boot to “Disabled.”• Windows NT system:• Choose the Main, Boot Options, and Quiet Boot, and set the Quiet Boot to “Disabled.”

This section explains each menu of BIOS setup.

�� IMPORTANT• The defaults are underlined.• The defaults may vary depending on the PC model you use. The defaults are shown as

“Defaults for Windows xx models.”• The ACPI S3 advanced standby mode has been set for the Windows 2000 model.• The BIOS setup menus are subject to change without notice.

■ Main menuThe main menu specifies the date and system drives.

• Setting detailsSystem TimeSets the current clock time (24-hour time) in two-digit hour, minute and second (hh:mm:ss) format.Enter the current date from the keyboard.The [Tab] and [Enter] keys shift the cursor to the next right position.

System DateSets the current calendar date in two-digit month, day and year (mm/dd/yy) format. Enter the currentdate from the keyboard. [Tab] and [Enter] keys shift the cursor to the next right position.

�� Point• Once you have completed system time and date setup, you need not repeat this setup each

time you turn on the PC. To correct the time or date, delete it using the [Backspace] key andenter the correct value.

Diskette ASets a floppy disk drive (FDD) type as follows.

- None, 360K, 1.2M, 720K, 1.4M

�� Point• This PC has a 1.44/1.2M-byte 3.5” floppy disk drive. It operates normally only when the 1.44/

1.2MB 3.5” drive type has been set.

IDE Drive 1/2/3/4Select a type and an operation mode of the attached IDE device from the submenu.Shift the cursor onto the item and press the [Enter] key to open its submenu.• Type: Sets an IDE device type as follows.

- Auto: Allows to automatically detect and set the IDE device type. Select this option if youwish to skip IDE device parameter setup.

- None: Does not use an IDE device.- Diskette 120M / ZIP: Allows to use a Super Disk drive or a ZIP drive.- CD-ROM: Allows to use a CD-ROM drive.- Other ATAPI: Allows to use another ATAPI device.- User: Allows the user to set up the hard disk drive (HDD) details.

�� Point• To change the current device type, select it using the [Space] bar.• Usually, select the “Auto.” When selecting an option other than “Auto,” you must set all

parameters supported by the device correctly. Otherwise, the PC may fail to access to thedevice. Carefully read the device manual(s) for its parameter setup.

• Cylinders: Sets the number of disk cylinders. This option is displayed when you have set the“Type” option to “User.”- 0 to 65535

• Heads: Sets the number of disk heads. This option is displayed when you have set the “Type”option to “User.”- 1 to 16

• Sectors/Track: Sets the number of sectors on the disk. This option is displayed when youhave set the “Type” option to “User.”- 0 to 63

• Capacity (CHS/LBA): Indicates the maximum disk capacity detected by the PC. This optionis displayed when you have set the “Type” option to “User.”

• Transfer Mode: Sets the maximum number of sectors for multi-sector data transmission. Thesector count detected by the PC is shown if you have set the “Type” option to “Auto,” If youhave set the “Type” option to anything other than “Auto” or “None,” you can set the number ofsectors for batch data transfer. The disk access speed increases when more number of sectorsare allocated for data transfer.- Disabled: Forces a single sector of data to be sent at a time. Select this option if the disk

unit does not support multi-sector transmission.- 2, 4, 8 or 16 sectors: Sets the number of sectors for batch data transfer.

• LBA Translation: Enables or disables logical block addressing (LBA) which allows an accessto each address using a logical serial number. If you have set the “Type” option to “Auto,” anappropriate mode is shown automatically.If you have set the “Type” option to anything other than “Auto” or “None,” you must set thefollowings.- Disabled: Disables LBA translation.- Enabled: Enables LBA translation.

• LBA Translation Mode: Selects an LBA address translation mode for a 508M-byte or largerhard disk unit. This option is displayed when you have set the “Type” option to “Auto.”If you have set the “Type” option to “Auto” or “None,” you must set the followings.- PTL: Not supported in the current version of your PC.- CHS: Translates the LBA address based on the physical number of cylinders, headers

and sectors of the hard disk.- LBA: Translates the LBA address based on the maximum number of sectors of the hard

disk.• PIO Mode: Selects a data transmission mode between the device and host. If you have set

the “Type” option to “Auto,” an appropriate mode is shown automatically. If you have set the“Type” option to anything other than “Auto” or “None,” you must set the followings.- Standard: Selects the most standard data transmission mode.- PIO 1, PIO 2, PIO 3, PIO 4: Selects the high-speed PIO data transmission mode. No DMA

transfer is used. The transfer rate increases when a larger value is set.- PIO 3 / DMA 1, PIO 4 / DMA 2: Selects the high-speed PIO/DMA data transfer mode and

allows to use the multi-word DMA transfer mode. The transfer rate increases when a largervalue is set.

- PIO 4/UDMA 16, PIO 4/UDMA 25, PIO 4/UDMA 33, PIO 4/UDMA 44, PIO 4/UDMA 66,PIO 4/UDMA 100: Selects the high-speed PIO/DMA data transfer mode and allows touse the Ultra DMA transfer mode. The transfer rate increases when a larger value is set.

�� Point• When you selecting a higher speed data transmission than the Standard mode, you need to

attach the device that supports the selected transmission mode.• The secondary IDE (IDE3/4) does not support the UDMA44, UDMA66 and UDMA100 modes.

• 32 Bit I/O: Enables the 32-bit PIO data transmission.- Disabled: Disables the data transmission.- Enabled: Enables the data transmission.

Boot OptionsSets the priority of start drives from the submenu.Shift the cursor onto the item and press the [Enter] key to open its submenu.• POST Errors: Displays an error message and stops PC operations if an error is detected by

the BIOS during self-diagnosis (POST).- No Halt On Any Errors: Ignores errors even when detected and starts up the PC.- Halt On All Errors: Displays an error message and stops PC startup.

�� Point• Note that no error is shown during PC startup even if the PS/2 keyboard is NOT connected.

• Fast Boot: Simplifies the self-diagnostic procedure (POST) to reduce the PC startup time.- Disabled: Does not reduce the PC startup time.- Enabled: Reduces the PC startup time.

�� Point• When a POST error occurs during startup, the next PC startup time is NOT reduced.

• Quiet Boot : Specifies to display or not the self-diagnostic (POST) screen during PC startingor restarting.- Disabled: Displays the self-diagnostic (POST) screen during PC starting or restarting.- Enabled: Displays the “FUJITSU” logo during PC starting or restarting.

�� Point• If you press the [Esc] key when the FUJITSU logo remains on the screen, you can switch to

the self-diagnostic screen.• Set this option to “Disabled” to check the BIOS messages of an expansion card.

• Primary Display: Selects a video device to be used as the primary display.- AGP VGA: Uses the video device locating in the AGP slot as the primary display.- PCI VGA: Automatically selects any of video devices locating in PCI slots 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

and the AGP slot in this order as the primary display.

• Boot Sequence: Specifies the priority of OS boot devices.Select a device whose priority you wish to change using the [↑] or [↓] key. Use the [+] key toselect the previous option, and use the [–] key to select the next option.The following shows the details of each item.- +Diskette: Starts up the system from the floppy disk. Shift the cursor onto the item and

press the [Enter] key to list the available device names. Select a device whose priorityyou wish to change using the [↑] or [↓] key. Use the [+] key to select the previous option,and use the [–] key to select the next option.The following explains each device.- Standard: Represents the built-in standard floppy disk drive (FDD).- FUJITSU MCE3130AP-(SM) (for example): Indicates the name of APATI removable

device when it is attached to the PC.- +Hard Drive: Starts up the system from the hard disk. Shift the cursor onto the item and

press the [Enter] key to list the available device names. Select a device whose priorityyou wish to change using the [↑] or [↓] key. Use the [+] key to select the previous option,and use the [–] key to select the next option.The following explains each device.- ST330621A-(PM) (for example): Indicates the name of installed hard disk drive (HDD).

The last PC, PS, SM or SS letters indicate the location (or priority) of HDD connection.(PM) : Primary master(PS) : Primary slave(SM) : Secondary master(SS) : Secondary slave

- Alternate Device: Selects an alternate HDD (connected to the SCSI card or others)that differs from the internal IDE device.

- CD-ROM Drive: Starts up the system from the CD-ROM disk.- Network Boot: Starts up the system from the legacy network boot device.- Boot Manage UNDI, PXE-2.0: Starts up the system from the LAN controller (PXE2.0)

installed in the PC. This option appears if you have set the LAN Remote Boot option to“PXE.”

�� Point• A bootable CD-ROM is required to start up the system from the CD-ROM drive.

Insert a CD-ROM disk into its drive before restarting.• Select a device using the [↑] or [↓] key and press the [Space] bar, and the device will be identified

by symbol “!.” After that, the system does not start from this device.

Base MemoryIndicates the conventional memory capacity.

Extended MemoryIndicates the capacity of expansion memory installed in the PC. The indication is 1M bytes smallerthan the actually installed memory capacity.

■ Advanced menuThe Advanced menu allows the detailed device setup as shown.

- Disabled: Disables serial port 1.- Enabled: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request to enable serial port 1.- Auto: Forces the BIOS or OS to automatically set up an I/O port address and interrupt

request.- OS Controlled: Forces the OS to automatically set up an I/O port address and interrupt

request.

�� Point• If you wish to disable the serial ports in Windows 2000 system, disable them using the Windows

device manager.

• Serial 1 Address: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request if you have set the “Serial 1”option to “Enabled.” This option is displayed when you have set the “Serial 1” option to“Enabled.”- 3F8h,IRQ 4; 2F8h,IRQ 3; 3E8h,IRQ 4; 2E8h,IRQ 3

• Serial port 2: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request of serial port 2.- Disabled: Disables serial port 2.- Enabled: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request to enable serial port 2.- Auto: Forces the BIOS or OS to automatically set up an I/O port address and interrupt


request.

�� Point• If you have selected a Smart Card reader or writer of custom-made options, this parameter is

set to “Disabled.” If you use a Smart Card reader/writer, refer to its manual(s).• If you wish to disable the serial ports in Windows 2000 system, disable them using the Windows

device manager.• You may not use some device models.

• Serial 2 Address: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request if you have set the “Serial 1”option to “Enabled.” This option is displayed when you have set the “Serial 2” option to“Enabled.”- 3F8h,IRQ 4; 2F8h,IRQ 3 ; 3E8h,IRQ 4; 2E8h,IRQ 3

�� Point• Never set the same I/O port address you have set for “Serial 1 Address” for this “Serial 2

Address” option.

• Parallel: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request of the parallel port.- Disabled: Disables the parallel port.- Enabled: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request to enable the parallel port.- Auto: Forces the BIOS or OS to automatically set up an I/O port address and interrupt


request.

�� Point• If you have set to “Auto,” some printers may not function normally or they may not be recognized

automatically. If it occurs, select to “Enabled.”• If you wish to disable the parallel port in Windows 2000 system, disable it using the Windows

device manager.

• Parallel Mode: Selects an operation mode of the device on the parallel port.- Printer: Sets the printer to the output-only mode. If you have set this option, you can connect

only a printer to the parallel port.- Bidirection: Selects the bidirectional data transmission mode. Select this option if you

connect a peripheral that supports bidirectional data transmission.- EPP: Sets a peripheral to the EPP mode. Select this option if you connect an EPP-

compliant peripheral to the port.- ECP: Sets a peripheral to the ECP mode. Select this option if you connect an ECP-

compliant peripheral to the port.

• Parallel Address: Sets an I/O port address and interrupt request if you have set the “Parallel”option to “Enabled.” This option is displayed when you have set the “Parallel” option to“Enabled.”- 378h,IRQ 7; 278h,IRQ 5; 3BCh,IRQ 7

�� Point• The “3BCh, IRQ7” option is not displayed of you have set the “Parallel Mode” option to “EPP”

or “ECP.”

• DMA Channel: Sets a DMA channel to connect an ECP-compliant peripheral unit. This optionis displayed if you have set the “Parallel” option to “Enabled” and if you have set the “ParallelMode” option to “ECP.”- DMA 1, DMA 3

• Diskette controller: Specifies to use or not the floppy disk controller as follows.- Disabled: Disables the floppy disk controller.- Enabled: Enables the floppy disk controller.

• Hard Disk Controller: Specifies to use or not the hard disk controller as follows.- Disabled: Disables the hard disk controller. If you have selected this option, you cannot

use the IDE interface.- Primary: Enables the primary IDE interface. If you have selected this option, you cannot

use the device connected to the secondary IDE interface.- Primary and Secondary: Enables both the primary and secondary IDE interfaces.

• Mouse controller: Specifies to use or not the PS/2-compatible mouse controller as follows.- Disabled: Disables the PS/2-compatible mouse controller.- Enabled: Enables the PS/2-compatible mouse controller.- Auto Detect: Enables the PS/2-compatible mouse controller if the mouse is connected to

the PC.

• LAN controller: Specifies to use or not the built-in LAN controller as follows.- Disabled: Disables the LAN controller.- Enabled: Enables the LAN controller.

• LAN Remote Boot: Specifies to use or not the PXE (Pre-boot Execution Environment) functionsto be called by the network server. This option is displayed if you have set the “LAN Controller”option to “Enabled.”- Disabled: Disables the PXE functions.- PXE: Enables the PXE functions. If you have set this option, the “BootManage PXE, PXE-

2.0” function is added to the “Boot Sequence” option.- BootP Not supported in the current version of your PC.

�� Point• An installation server system conforming to “Wired for Management Baseline Version 2.0” is

required to start up the OS from the network server.

• AC’ 97 Audio: Specifies to use or not the built-in sound device as follows.- Auto: Enables the sound device. However, if you have added an additional PCI sound

card, you cannot use the built-in sound device.- Disabled: Disables the built-in sound device.

• Gameport Not supported in the current version of your PC. Keep this option to “Disabled.”- Disabled: Disables the joystick port.

• Midiport Not supported in the current version of your PC. Keep this option to “Disabled.”- Disabled: Disables the MIDI port.

PCI ConfigurationYou can set up the following PCI interrupts from a submenu.Shift the cursor onto the item and press the [Enter] key to open its submenu.• PCI Interrupt 1 to 8: Set an interrupt request of PCI interrupt signals (INTA# to INTH#).

- Disabled: Does not assign interrupt signals.- Auto: Assigns interrupt signals automatically.- IRQ 3, IRQ 4, IRQ 5, IRQ 6, IRQ 7, IRQ 9, IRQ 10, IRQ 11, IRQ 12, IRQ 14, IRQ 15: Sets

an interrupt request you have selected.

�� Point• Usually, select the “Auto.”• Before selecting IRQ 3 or IRQ 4, make sure that the same interrupt requests are NOT used

for serial port 1 or 2 (Serial 1/2).• Before selecting IRQ 5 or IRQ 7, make sure that the same interrupt requests are NOT used

for the parallel port (Parallel ).• You can set IRQ 6 if you do not use the built-in floppy disk controller (Diskette Controller).• You cannot set this option to “Disabled” if interrupt requests (INTA# to INTH#) are used for

Advanced System ConfigurationYou can set up the detailed system from the submenu as follows.Shift the cursor onto the item and press the [Enter] key to open its submenu.

• PCI Bus Parity Checking: Not supported in the current version of your PC. Keep this option to“Disabled.”- Disabled: Skips parity check.

• ECC CPU Checking: Specifies to perform or not the ECC of the CPU.- Disabled: Skips the CPU ECC.- Enabled: Performs the CPU ECC.

• Graphics Aperture: Sets the memory size used for the AGP display.- 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB

• USB Legacy Support: Enables or disables to use USB-compliant keyboard and mouse in theOS (such as Windows NT) that does not support USB.- Disabled: Disables the USB keyboard and mouse in the OS that does not support the

USB standard.- Enabled: Enables the USB keyboard and mouse in the OS that does not support the USB

standard.

�� Point• If a USB keyboard or mouse is used under an OS such as Windows NT that does not support

USB, the PC may not deliver its full performance. In such case, use a PS/2 keyboard andmouse, and set the “USE Legacy Support” option to “Disabled.”

• USB Memory Location: Specifies the memory location to be assigned to USB devices. Thisoption is not displayed if you have set the USB Legacy Support option to “Disabled.”- Expansion ROM Area: Allocates the expansion ROM area to USB devices.- Top of Base Memory: Allocates the USB memory area to the top of 640K-byte base

memory.

�� Point• A POST error may occur depending on the type and number of expansion cards if you have

set the Expansion ROM Area option. If it occurs, select the “Top of Base Memory” option.

Power On/Off setupYou can set up the power on/off switching from the submenu.Shift the cursor onto the item and press the [Enter] key to open its submenu.• Power Off Source - Software: Forces the software to turn the power supply off.

- Disabled: Does not turn the power supply off.- Enabled: Turns the power supply off.

�� Point• This setup is ignored if the ACPI function is enabled (on the Windows 2000 model).

• Power Off Source - Keyboard Not supported in the current version of your PC. Keep this optionto “Disabled.”- Disabled: Disables this function.

• Power Off Source - Power Button Allows the user to turn the PC power supply off using thePower button.- Disabled: Does not turn the power supply off.- Enabled: Turns the power supply off.

�� Point• This setup is ignored if the ACPI function is enabled (on the Windows 2000 model).

• Power On Source: Allows the PC power-on setup as follows.- Bios Controlled: Uses the power-on switching of BIOS setup. Four options of “Power On

Source - Chipcard,” “Power On Source - Remote,” “Power On Source - LAN” and “PowerOn Source - Timer” are made valid.

- ACPI Controlled: Turns the PC power supply on based on the ACPI (Windows 2000) OSsetup. Four options of “Power On Source - Chipcard,” “Power On Source - Remote,”“Power On Source -LAN” and “Power On Source - Timer” are made invalid.

• Power On Source - Chipcard: Not supported in the current version of your PC. Keep this optionto “Disabled.”- Disabled: Does not turn the power supply on.

• Power On Source - Remote: Turns on the PC power supply or not when a ring signal is receivedby the modem (connected to the serial port).- Disabled: Does not turn the power supply on.- Enabled: Turn the power supply on.

�� Point• This function may not operate normally due to telephone line conditions.• If you have set this option to Enabled, the PC power supply may be turned on when you turn

on the power switch of an external modem.• You cannot use this function during the time immediately after you have connected the power

cord of the PC or after you have turned off the PC power supply by pressing its power buttonfour or more seconds due to system stop or some other reasons.

• This function is not supported on serial port 2.

• Power On Source - LAN: Turns on the PC power supply or not when a wakeup packet isreceived by the built-in or optional LAN controller.- Disabled: Does not turn the power supply on.- Enabled: Turn the power supply on.

• Power On Source - Timer: Not supported in the current version of your PC. Keep this optionto “Disabled.”- Disabled: Disables this function.

• LAN Wakeup Mode - Monitor: Not supported in the current version of your PC. Keep this optionto “On.”- On: Turn the power supply on.

• Power Failure Recovery: Turn the PC power supply on automatically when recovered frompower supply or others.- Always OFF: Does not turn the PC power supply even when the power has been recovered.- Always ON: Turn the PC power supply when the power has been recovered.- Previous State: Returns the PC to the state before the AC power source has been cut.- Disabled: Disables this function.

�� Point• If you have set the Always OFF option or if you have selected the Previous Status option and

the PC has been stopped or its power supply has been turned off, the PC power supply maybe turned on instantaneously after power recovery. This is not the problem of your PC. Toavoid it, keep this option to “Disabled.”

• If you have set the Always ON or Always OFF option, wait more than 10 seconds before turningon the PC power switch again. The PC may not operate normally if you turn on its power switchwithin 10 seconds after the last power-off.

• If you have set the Previous State option, the PC power supply is turned on only when the PCwas running or standing by when the AC power source failed. If the PC was stopped duringAC power failure, the PC power supply is NOT turned on.

System ManagementSets up the system management as follows.• Fan Control: Controls the CPU fans as follows.

- Enhanced Cooling: Rotates the fan(s) at the maximum speed to cool down the CPU andprovide the maximum CPU performance.

- Auto: Rotates the fan(s) at the appropriate speed to provide the maximum CPUperformance.

- Silent: Drops the fan rotation speed to minimize the fan noise. The CPU performance islimited.

• SM Error Halt: Specifies to stop POST processing or not if a system management error hasoccurred or the system configuration has been changed.- Disabled: Displays an error message but does not interrupt POST processing.- Enabled: Interrupts POST processing.

• Fan State: Indicates the state of fan(s) mounted on the PC.

• Temp: Indicates the temperature in the PC housing.

Reset Configuration DataInitializes or not the extended system configuration data (ESCD) that has the system resourceinformation as follows.

- No: Does not initialize the ESCD.- Yes: Initialize the ESCD during PC restarting.

�� Point• If you have set this option to Yes and if the ESCD has been initialized during next PC startup,

this option is automatically returned to No (default).

Lock Setup ConfigurationSpecifies to protect the device settings from being changed by the Plug-and-Play function of theOS.

Large Disk Access ModeSelects an access method to a large-capacity hard disk.

�� Point• If an incorrect password is entered three times in succession, the PC beeps and the “System

Disabled” message appears. The PC rejects any more request from the keyboard. If it occurs,turn off the PC power supply by holding down the PC power switch more than four (4) seconds.Wait for more than 10 seconds, and restart the PC and enter the correct password.

• If you forget the administrator password, you cannot enter the BIOS setup. In such case, thePC must be repaired. Contact a Fujitsu Service Center or your retailer.

Administrator Password LockThis option is valid only when an administrator password is already set. You can lock the keyboardwhen the expansion card is being initialized. If you have installed an expansion card (such asSCSI card) supporting its setup during startup, you can protect the card by locking out the keyboard.

System Password ModeSelects a security mode to be used during system startup.

- Keyboard: Secures the keyboard. Although the PC is turned on, it cannot be started asits keyboard and mouse are locked. When the password is entered from the keyboardand the [Enter] key is pressed, the securities are cleared.

�� Point• This function does not work with a USB keyboard or mouse.• If the indicators on the keyboard alternately turn on and off though the OS is started, the system

Cabinet monitoringEnables or disables PC cabinet securities as follows.

- Disabled: Does not use PC cabinet securities.- Enabled: Uses PC cabinet securities. If you have already set an administrator password

on the PC and if the PC cabinet is removed by any person, the BIOS setup program iscalled when he or she starts the PC. A password entry is prompted before system startup.

■ Power menuYou can select the power-saving mode from the Power menu.If the PC is turned on but not operated for a certain time period, it enters the standby state (calledthe power-saving mode) to minimize the power consumption.

• Setting detailsAPMEnables or disables BIOS APM functions as follows.

- Disabled: Disables BIOS APM functions. As the APM functions are not provided, the PCcannot enter the standby state and cannot turn off its power supply automatically.

- Enabled: Enables BIOS APM functions. Using the APM functions, the PC enters thestandby state when not used and turns off its power supply automatically when shut down.

This chapter explains the password functions for protection of data stored on your PC.This PC allows the user to set a password to prevent illegal use. Once the password is set, the PCis accessible to the users who know the correct password.

■ Password typesThe following two types of passwords can be defined on the PC.The PC operation authority depends on the password type.• Setup Password

This type of passwords allow only the particular person to use BIOS Setup. The BIOS Setupstarts only after the correct administrator password has been entered.

• System PasswordThis type of passwords allow particular people to use the PC. The operating system (OS) ofthe PC starts when the correct user password is entered. The user passwords can be setonly after the administrator password has been set.

■ Setting your password1 Locate the cursor onto the “Set Setup Password” or “Set System Password” and press

the Enter key.The password entry window will appear.

2 Enter a password consisting of 2 to 8 characters.The password can contain alphanumeric characters only.Your entries are not displayed on the screen but each keystroke is indicated by symbol “■”.

�� Point• If you have defined a password from the numeric keypad, you must always enter the password

from the numeric keypad after the next startup.• When you change your password, you must first enter the current password for your

authorization checkout.

3 Enter your current password and press the [Enter] key.The cursor shifts to the “Confirm new password” option and your are prompted to enter thepassword again.

6 Choose the “Save Changes & Exit” from the Exit menu to exit the BIOS setup and shutdown the PC.

• Restarting the PC after password setup• Once you have set an administrator password, a password window appears and you are

prompted to enter the password when you call the BIOS setup. Enter the password and pressthe [Enter] key.

• After you have set a user password, the user is prompted to enter the password when he orshe starts the PC. Enter the password and press the [Enter] key.If you have selected the “Security” - “System Password Mode” during BIOS setup and youhave set the System Password Mode option to “Keyboard,” a user can start up the OS on thePC but the keyboard and mouse of the PC are locked out. The user cannot operate the PC(the keyboard indicators blink one after the other). Although the password window is NOTdisplayed, you can enter the password. When you enter the password and press the [Enter]key, the PC is unlocked.



• If you have defined a password from the numeric keypad, you must always enter the passwordfrom the numeric keypad after the next startup.

■ Changing or deleting a password

• Changing a passwordTo change a password, shift the cursor to the “Administrator password setting” or “User passwordsetting.” Then, enter the current password and enter a new password two times.

• Deleting a passwordTo delete a password, shift the cursor to the “Administrator password setting” or “User passwordsetting.” Then, enter the current password and press the [Enter] key without entering a newpassword.If you delete the administrator password, its user passwords are also deleted.

■ If you forget the passwordIf you cannot remember the administrator password, you cannot start up the PC and you cannotcall the BIOS setup. In such case, the PC must be repaired. Contact a Fujitsu Service Center oryour retailer.

This section explains corrective actions to take when the PC displays an error message. Readthe relating items of this section when necessary.

■ When a message appearsTake the actions given in “Message list” or use the following steps.• Execute BIOS Setup.

If a BIOS setup error appears, rerun BIOS setup.• Check the peripherals for an installation error.

Make sure that expansion cards and other peripherals have been installed correctly. Also,make sure that the interrupt level of each card has been set correctly. Refer to the expansioncard and utility software manuals if provided.If the error message still continues, the PC may have failed. Contact a Fujitsu Service Centeror your retailer for repair.

■ Message listThe following lists the possible error messages.• Invalid NVRAM media type

The system information has been destroyed. Reset the BIOS setup to defaults.• System RAM Failed at offset: xxxx

Failing Bits: zzzz zzzzAn error occurred at address xxxx during the system memory test. If you are using a memorymodule, remove it from the PC and check the system again. If this message no longer appears,the memory module may have failed. Replace the memory module and check the systemagain.

• Extended RAM Failed at offset: xxxxFailing Bits: zzzz zzzzAn error occurred at address xxxx during the expansion memory test. Check the memorymodules for an installation error. Also, check whether they are third-party products or not.

• Keyboard controller errorAn error occurred during keyboard controller test. Turn off the PC power supply by pressingthe power switch. Wait for more than 10 seconds and turn on the PC power switch again.

• Diskette drive A errorAn error occurred during the test of floppy disk drive. Make sure that the floppy disk optionshave been set correctly on the Main menu of BIOS setup and that the floppy disk drive (FDD)has been installed correctly.

• Incorrect Drive A type - run SETUP.An incorrect type of floppy disk drive has been set for the PC. Check the “Diskette A” parameterson the Main menu of BIOS setup.

• Fixed Disk Controller FailureAn error occurred during access to the hard disk controller. Contact a Fujitsu Service Centeror your retailer for repair.

• Press <F1> to resume, <F2> to setupIf an error occurs during POST, this message appears before the OS starts up. Press the F1key to start up the OS. Press the F2 key to call BIOS setup and correct its setting.
