They say “if you want to get something done ... get a busyperson to do it”. That sounds really good ... (on paper) until youactually have to sit down and do the footnotes and organize allthe details for the bull sale catalogue.

As usual at bull sale catalogue preparation we are dealing withfour different calf crops at the same time. We have the“Specifically Held Over” two year olds, we have the yearling bullsand we have the newborns of 2013 coming hard and heavy atthe same moment. Now wait a minute you say, that’s only three,what’s the fourth one? Sifting through piles and piles of bull salecatalogues from other breeders trying to decide on one or two of

them, making lists of cows and heifers and what to A.I. them to and whatpastures they are to go in with what clean-up bulls! So I’m dealing withnext year’s calves as well because, just like our customers, our bull buyingdecisions are at least half the battle!! When you make an informedchoice, it’s usually a good choice.

It’s kind of neat to sit here compiling all the data for our 42nd bullsale in Fort Macleod Auction and realize that these bulls selling today willgo out there and influence other program’s bottom lines. We take thatresponsibility very seriously and are very proud to fill the needs of ourcustomers both purebred and especially commercial cattlemen from awide array of management, environment and financial operations.

I do believe we will have an awesome set of bulls at our bull sale for our customers in 2013. The line-up will include many different and extremely exciting new and old bloodlines for you to expand your genetic base line.

Things are changing at Brylor Ranch with the addition last year ofthe Get-A-Long cowherd. Our ET work will become a little less and nothave quite as many of the ET bulls in the future but rest assured ourquality and standards for selection will remain as high, if not higher, inthe future years!

I have worked very hard with not putting up with bad feet in mycowherd for a long, long time. That is something I am very proud ofand I do believe it shows in our bulls we offer. Also the udders on ourcowherd are amazing in my opinion. Come see for yourself sometime... we’re busy with kids, cows and 4-H projects, but I’m home a lotmore nowadays and happy to be a rancher in southern Alberta makin’a livin’ the only way I know how ... in the cattle business.

Another sold for $13,500 at “Tradition With A Vision”. A daughter pro-duced the $51,000 Iron Hide Bull of Blair’s. This “Elite” old treasure chest of ge-netics is in the Top 1% for milk, Total Maternal, Stayability and Heifer PregnancyEPD’s. Also he is in the Top 6% for YW and 4% for Carcass Weights.

This “Young Gun” or “Future Superstar” really and truly is living up to hisname! He’s had a huge impact on every herd he has touched so far and thefuture looks extremely bright! Unfortunately he is going to be very limited in hisuse as we have only a small quantity of semen on him. Since being our high seller in 2011 at $47,500 to JK / 5L / 3 Fires of Kansashe will not collect anymore. He breeds and settles cows naturally very well,though, at JK’s. The first summer in Kansas at 100 and some days of 100o+ Fwas a little hard on Wave’s nuts apparently as he did put up semen previously at Alta under Terry Whites guidance! He’sbeen on my “A” List since Day #1, especially when you see his dam, she’s an ETdaughter of Sequoia and out of New Trend’s dam, Miss Seaman 31A. Sheraised a $12,500 daughter to WCC in Kansas. He’s a SoliD HeRD BUll PRoSPect that has a lot to offer the industry.

Now that the first Roughrider daughters have calved at our ranch, I like himall the more! They are everything and more I knew and expected them to be.That’s not surprising to me at all though as I really thought his dam, the Adelle8958 cow, was pretty special. She also raised the Makin Hay 9913 bull. The sons of Roughrider have been remarkable too. Last year we had agreat one sell to Jeff Fraser in Manitoba at $14,500 and one from ABC CattleCompany sold at Agribition 2012 to WRAZ for a large sum of money I under-stand. Roughrider semen is now rare in Canada. We do have 20 straws sellingtoday (A - 10 straws, B - 10 straws, and that’s all folks).

• Selling 1/2 interest & full Possession This bull is very well named, not just because of our partner on his dam(Mark Chriss of the Mark Cattle Co. in Oregon) but because he is just what hisname implies! He could have been called “Bang On” or “On Target” or “Spot On”but that wouldn’t have fit too well! Point is, we’re glad to have Mark as our partner on Olivia 706P at $24,000for 1/2 of her in “Tradition With A Vision” 2011. Over the years we’ve had a lot of different cattlemen sort thepens of heifers in the Little Royal but maybe no one with as big apersonality as my good friend and partner, Mr. Kurt Schwarz!

Each and every one of my previous judges know what a bigdeal it is to evaluate my commercial customers’ product. I know fora fact that Kurt is so lookng forward to doing this very importanttask because he has a vested interest in it! As I mentioned, notonly is he one of my very best friends in this cow business, but heis a long term committed partner to our Brylor operation now as abull supplier. Kurt and his wife, Paula, own and operate JK Cattle /3 Fires with Kurt’s parents, Jack & Karen Lindstrom and “UncleJim” from Topeka, Kansas. They have about 175 Red Angus cows,some of which are Brylor partnership cattle.

Kurt attended “K-State” and was on the judging team thereunder Mr. Scott Schaake. Kurt grew up in the Shorthorn businessand one of the big feathers in his cap is that he won the “All Ameri-can Shorthorn Nationals Female” back to back years.

No easy feat, let me tell you, as there is always over 1000heifers at these events.

My name is Jamie Carey. I am the 22-year-old daughter of Brent and Peggy Carey of Stavely, AB. My wholelife I have grown up on a farm west of Stavely. Stavely and the small towns surrounding it are all very involved inthe agriculture industry. As walking by Dad’s side as a little girl, I did anything from checking cows, to feeding, tohelping hold the tail of a cow calving, and sometimes if I was lucky I would even get to help drive the tractor. As Igot to be more mature in age, eventually those jobs became full time to take on as my own along with my broth-ers. I have never lost my passion of working with animals and being able to spend more time with them.

After 21 years being around the Agriculture lifestyle and being part of 4-H and what it had to offer, I havenow decided to go to Lethbridge College to take Agricultural Technology, with a major in Animal Science. I amvery excited to learn more about the agriculture lifestyle, but even more exited for the future I will have afterschool. Two to four years on learning anything from crops, to irrigation, to accounting, nutrition, even sheepsheering, could hand me a life full of opportunities. Studying this topic could give me the option to many thingssuch as, being a sells rep for local vet clinics, feed rep for Viterra, or for higher up brand names, such asIvomec. I could also be in places such as dairy’s, different feedlots, pig and sheep farms, even Cargill selling fdifferent feed additives that could change the daily living of animals. Studying ways to improve a healthy foodbalance for farm animals could make a life impact for any farmer or rancher, from having healthy looking cattlethat could raise up the market price, to having a world champion bull that could drastically improve the income

for the owner in breeding and semen sales. Who knows? I could even be that “drug dealer”.I plan to take advantage of these options and help make a difference in the ranching and farming lifestyle. I hope to travel to different places and meet

different faces in this business than I already have. I have a great opportunity to learn how different cultures deal with certain sicknesses, diseases, and ordiets, and maybe I could even help those cultures by supplying them with the knowledge that I know. But most of all I would love to support my hometownto help further educate, guide or even give some advice to the people that I grew up around and support the idea of more people getting into this excitingagricultural business, as well as to give back what they gave to me, which was giving me a great lifestyle that I have a passion for doing.

My name is Colby Jenkins and I was born and raised 20 miles southeast of Pincher Creek on the Lazy URanch, an 8000-acre cow/calf operation. Growing up on a ranch has not only taught me valuable life skills thatI will never forget, but has helped to shape me into the person that I am today. I learned so many things fromsimply going through the day-to-day tasks of helping my dad with ranch work.If we did not do the chores, thehorses would not eat, and having the responsibility of a living thing on your hands makes you very accountablefor taking care of the duties you are responsible for. Animals and livestock never take a day off, and thereforethe work that goes into running an 800 head cow/calf ranch is immense, and I got a taste of it growing uparound it. I will forever appreciate the gratifying feeling I get when I know I have a job to do, and instead of ne-glecting it for something else, I put the work in and finish the task.

With the help from our ranch, my dad taught me how to be smart with my money and invest it instead ofspending it on material objects that don’t generate me any money. The year that Ralph Klein gave every Al-berta citizen 400 dollars. I remember the conversations at school between students about what they weregoing to spend their 400 dollars on – new video games, new clothes, a new bike, or a new iPod. I was dream-ing up toys that I would buy of my own but my dad told me that my siblings and I would be pooling our moneytogether and investing in some heifers. I didn’t fully understand the concept, but went along with it anyway.Now I am 20 years old and I am proud to say that my brother, sister, and I have a herd of 32 heifers and steers,each year growing larger and generating more profit. When we sell our herd in the fall, I take the profit, keep

half to use while I am in school, and invest the other half in more “Free grazers” (We call our herd the Free Grazers because they graze for free on mydad’s land, but we pay for all the vaccinations, etc.). The 400 dollars my friends got from the government that year is long gone, but with the help of mydad and the ranch life, I have seen my money grow into much more than a new video game or iPod. This is one of the most valuable lessons I havelearned from life on the ranch and the benefits of livestock.

In conclusion, growing up on the Lazy U Ranch is an experience I would not trade for the world, and has taught me many things and even though Ihave moved away from home, I am still learning things from the ranch every single time I go there, and I do not expect that to end anytime soon.

Hi, my name is Kelsey Park. I am the daughter of Clayton and Kathy Park who own RACK Red Angus. I amalso the granddaughter of Doug and Cheryl Lane who owned Meadow Creek Red Angus. I graduated with aHigh School Diploma in 2011, and I am currently furthering my education to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.It is a full-time two year program. The program requires us to have eight courses when the full-time requirementsare only five courses. After I finish the nursing program my goal is to continue my education into Radiology.

I am very excited to finish my education and continue to grow a purebred Red Angus herd of my own. Ilove going to school and to have the ability to help people in need. Nursing is something that I am very pas-sionate about, but I am also very passionate about ranching, and passing the love and knowledge on to futuregenerations. My Grandpa Doug taught my dad many valuable things that my dad then taught me while I grewup on the ranch. I hope to pass that knowledge down to my kids one day. With living in the city I don’t get tohelp out as much on the ranch but every day spent in the city is to get me further in life so that I can have aranch of my own.

I was a member in the Claresholm 4-H Club for nine years as well as a member of the Southern AlbertaJudging Club for three years. I held every position in the 4-H club over the years and learnt many valuable skillsthat have assisted me in becoming a confident individual. From learning how to make a halter to public speakingI have relied heavily on the skills. I can get up in a crowd when needed and talk without being nervous, as well

as judge many things from cereal boxes to cattle. 4-H teaches many things that at the time seem unimportant but as life goes on you begin to use the skillsmore and more without realizing it.

Whether it’s been knowledge that I’ve gained from my family, 4-H, or school I cannot wait until I can give back to my community. Everything that hasbeen taught to me over the years has made me who I am today. I will never stop learning but that’s what makes the cattle industry so exciting, there is al-ways something new to learn.

Curve is the newest Brylor Herd sire acquisition.When I saw him go into the ring at Agribition last fall be-side his beauty of a 2 year old mother I knew I had to gotalk to Brett and Traci about buying a piece of him. He had asmuch scope and dimension as any calf in the barn and was waybetter thru his heart and front one third than all the other calves inthe barn that day.

He also has got a set of nuts on him that were tremen-dous for a calf in NovemberLots of hair, good birth weight and was the highest WPDA of allthe bull calves there as well!

We are looking forward to using this calf because I neverhave “trouble with the CURVE”. He will be at Alta for collection inlate February and thru March so we can hopefully get him downfor display at the sale.
