  • As you read this edition of our PWP newsletter, our Member Ap-preciation Retreat plans are still underway. We are anticipating a day that will let us all have some fun, learn something new, and paint with friends. Let’s hope the weather holds! You know, I am sure, that your MAR committee members are checking the forecast daily!

Thank you to Sandy Scales, who is bringing us Betty Caithness’s techniques, and teaching us a brand new unpublished pattern. Thanks to Jackie Nowak, too, for

welcoming Sandy into her home, while Sandy is here with us. Linda Kapp and her husband, Kirk, made the boxes that we are painting for this Retreat class, and Sue Wenning prepped all of them, so they are ready for you all to start when Sandy gives us the go-ahead! A buffet lunch is being pro-vided, thanks to the Fireside Grill staff. Your committee members have planned a day of learning, painting, prizes and goodies!Take a look at the pictures of what we will be painting with Sandy.

    Membership Report

PWP Member Appreciation Retreat, Saturday, March 1, 2014

    2

Please welcome our two newest members, Pat Keeler and Donna Tucker. We currently have 48 members. It’s not too late to be a part of PWP. Join us today!

Thanks to Lois Eckert, and her daughter, 12 more boxes were de-livered to Her-shey hospital in late January. At the Janu-ary meeting, 6 boxes were taken and 11 were returned. We have a total of 40 painted boxes on hand at Hilary’s, and Dottie has some on hand in case Harris-burg Hospital has a need, before we can have our Memory Box Paint In. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the Paint-In originally scheduled for February 15. Our Memory Box Paint-In is now

scheduled for May 3. Perhaps, with the nicer weather, more of you will

be able to join us. Let Hilary know via email ([email protected]) or phone (leave a voicemail) (717 730 9220)). For both proj-ects, it is recom-mended that the basecoat color be a medium to dark value. For the lace design, a corre-sponding white value is needed.

Hilary has the color list for the Dove project, so let her know if you need it to get ready for May 3!Here are some pictures of both designs.

How happy do you think Lois is with her Ginger Edwards chair?

  • We are looking forward to our next officially scheduled Paint-In on June 7, 2014 with Pat Meyers. We will be painting Pat’s “Cat Playing With a Ball of Yarn”. Here is the picture for you to review in order to decide which surface you want to use. I will have a sign-up sheet at the March meeting. For those that sign up, the instruction sheet and pattern will be e-mailed to you. For those who don’t have e-mail access, hard copies will be provided to you. Let’s have a great year painting with our very own talented instruc-tors. Hattie

RemindeRYou must be a member in good standing to participate in paint-ins.

We want you to join us!

An opportunity came to Barb Lehman’s attention that the Library in Mechanicsburg was looking for differ-ent commnity programs. PWP is set up to instruct a make-it/take-it project for Wednesday May 7th. The faux salt glaze pottery was suggested to be a good be-ginner project. So, mark you calendars if you can lend a hand. Program will start at 6:00 p.m.. PWP will be represented by a few members, so far, who would teach and assist in doing the project you see pictured to the left. If you have some time and would be able to

help with this, it would be wonderful. Contact Barb Lehman if you can.

Messiah Village is looking for our artwork! As we have done in the past, we will be displaying our art in the Village Commons hallway, near the gift shop. Like the last time, we will also have the curio cabinet for non-hanging items. If you choose, you can sell your pieces. Each artist is responsible for pricing their items. Messiah has a great hanging system but it isn’t al-ways friendly with picture hangers. The best way to hang your artwork is with wire but we have been able to customize most artwork to hang.We will be meeting at Messiah Vil-lage Commons on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 3pm. I would like to know ahead of time how many paint-ers will be sharing their pieces, so please email me at [email protected] if you are interested in hanging your artwork for the month of April. Penns Woods Painters donates 10% of all sales to Messiah Village and collects 6% sales tax. Linda Kapp

Art & Tea Show coming Sunday, October 26. Watch for more information in the next newsletter, on line and on Face-book. So, lucky you, Linda Kapp and Wendy Beckmann stepped up to the plate to plan the Tea for this year. We will surely want others to join in on the fun, so lock this date down on your calendar now. Having done so, there won’t be any reason in the world not to come out for a cup of tea and a chance to converse with everyone else who is as passionate as you are about painting. A chance to show off some of things you have been working on and to see what others have done that might inspire you for the next year. Who knows where it might lead?

  • First – if you are planning to join us for May 3, Memory Box Paint-In, and you do not have the Scharff brushes that Arlene Linton recom-mends, please be reminded that we need a minimum order of $300 retail to benefit from the chapter fundraiser order. We have a second chance to get ready for May 3! As you may remember, for 2014, we will be having both a Silent Auction and a Raffle of some big

brush items at our Saturday meet-ings. At our January meeting, Lois Eckert won the Ginger Edwards Chair, Pat Meyers won the Judy Diephouse Stroke Plate, and Doris Kohler won Maureen McNaugh-ton’s White Poppy. Congratula-tions to each of you! For our May meeting, we will have another Judy Diephouse piece for our Silent Auction, as well as

a Trudy Beard piece and a second Maureen McNaughton piece avail-able for your raffle ticket selections. For the Silent Auction, you each will need to write in the amount you are bidding on the chair. For the raffle pieces, when you pur-chase your raffle tickets, you will put 1 ticket of the pair in the ‘bucket’ next to your selection.

Call to Order: President Joyce Gutierrez called our meeting to order at 9:32 a.m.

Installation of Officers: Joyce called the 2014 officers to the front of the room. Joyce’s sister, Cindy Black, served as M.C. The new of-ficers were each presented with a scarf hand-made by Joyce.

New officers presented were:President: Joyce GutierrezVP Programs: Dee DeLorenzoVP Membership: Barb LehmanTreasurer: Hilary FelinskiSecretary: Elaine Moran

Programs: Dee DeLorenzo, VP of Programs, announced the program for the day – Seasonal Pendants taught by Hilary Felinski. Each member present got a kit which contained 4 glass pendants, a chain, and bails. Extra chains were available for $1.00.

Dee announced the Monday, March 17 membership meeting will feature Melissa Crowther who will be do-ing a demo of painting on silk with dyes. The Saturday, May 17 meeting will feature Doris Kohler who will be teaching us how to paint on silk scarves with Sharpies. PWP will help augment costs. More details will follow.

Membership:Barb Lehman announced that we currently have 44 paid members, and two more will be coming in the mail.

Treasurer’s Report:Treasurer Hilary Felinski gave the following report:

    Beginning Balance $ 15,821.00 Income: $ 3,566.57 Expenses: $ 2,005.74 Ending Balance: $ 17,381.83

Memory Boxes:The February 15 paint-in will be memory boxes. Examples were on display of dove boxes and various lid designs. Members were asked to sign the sheet and

indicate how many boxes that they could prep. The base coating must be done before the paint-in.

Ways and Means:Hilary mentioned that we’ve raised over $150 so far from the sale of Rada Cutlery. She mentioned that this is an ongoing sale and encouraged orders.

Membership Appreciation Retreat:The March 1 member appreciation program will fea-ture a Betty Caithness design of a 4-sided lamp base taught by Sandy Scales. The sides are small (3” x 4”), so Sandy suggested members bring a magnifier as a full-day project of this nature without magnification could strain eyes. Joyce suggested checking at BJ’s for magnifiers. Others suggested trying out the magni-fier before buying. The chapter will cover the costs for the whole day including lunch, instructions, and paints, for everyone who has paid their 2014 member-ship dues. (Bring your own small brushes and regular painting equipment.)

Proposed Budget:Hilary mentioned that copies of the proposed budget were handed out at the November meeting. No one had any questions. She indicated that the 2014 focus will be to help other chapters in the area with atten-dance at their seminars. Joyce asked for a motion to accept the budget. Dottie Shultz made the motion, and it was seconded by Donna Brown. The motion passed.

Scharff Brush Sale:Hilary mentioned that Scharff brushes are recom-mended for the February memory box paint-in. Hilary has the catalog. PWP treasury gets 10% of sales.

Newsletter:Wendy Beckmann talked about the newsletter and said she welcomes tips and suggestions from mem-bers. The Friday following the Board meeting is the deadline for her to receive any items for inclusion in the newsletter.

    Publicity:None

Paint-Ins:Hatti Ogle announced the paint-ins for 2014. The February paint-in is the memory boxes. The June 7 will feature a painting of a cat with ball of yarn taught

Penns Woods Painters – General Membership Meeting

  • by Pat Meyers. August 23 will be a box painted with roses taught by Lois Eckert. Fran Huffman will teach the October 18 program which is a Noel banner.

Volunteers Needed:Joyce asked for a volunteer to chair the tea committee. We have some volunteers to serve on the committee. She also needs volunteers to learn the camera set up for meetings, seminars, and paint-ins and to store the camera. Wendy, Hatti, and Donna volunteered to help with the camera.

Art Display and Sale:Messiah Village is allowing us to hang and sell art. PWP would pay the tax and give them a 10% dona-tion. The artist would get the proceeds less the 10%. Linda Kapp is organizing the April display/sale, and there will be another display/sale in December.

Treasure Boxes: Lois Eckert mentioned that she brought 8 treasure boxes and patterns. Three finished boxes were turned in and given to Caitlin’s Smiles. Hilary has 12 unfin-ished boxes at her house. Volunteers are needed to paint boxes.

New Business:Sylvia Bean is the newest PWP member. The members present welcomed her.

Silent Auction:A chair painted by Ginger Edward was auctioned off. Lois won the chair with her $155 bid. A raffle was held for the Judy Diephouse fall colors plate and the Mau-reen McNaughton white poppy. Doris Kohler won the white poppy, and Pat Meyers won the fall colors plate.

Show and Tell:Dottie Shultz showed her painted glass necklace which she received as a gift which was in keeping with today’s program. Fran Huffman showed a glass pen-dant with a rose painted on it that she got at a HOOT conference.

Miscellaneous Announcements:Betty Lou Zimmerman and Lois Eckert mentioned that they have some hotel spaces available for the Au-gust 2 HOOT conference.

Adjournment:There being no further business, President Joyce moved to end the meeting. There was a motion by Dottie Shultz which was seconded by Hatti Ogle. The meeting was adjourned.

Mechanicsburg Artist Exhibit The Mechanicsburg Museum has an Artists Exhibit going on now through May 17, featuring artwork from their mu-seum archives, Kas Morret, Dave Keefer, Eva Williams and our own PWP Joyce Gutierrez! The exhibit of local artists within the Mechanicsburg area features various styles, media and methods. Also includ-ed are works from the museum’s collec-tion of Mechanicsburg artists that are seldom available for the public to view.

Penns Woods Painters was asked to contribute to the show and Joyce Gutier-rez took them up on the offer. Her “Fruit” is featured in the sliding cabinet as you can see on the left. Take some time to check out the show. No tickets required. Some very interesting pieces and quite a lot of talent in the little ‘burg. The mu-seum is at 2 Strawberry Alley, Mechanic-sburg, PA.

  • Since we don’t have any seminars on the 2014 PWP calendar, I want to share information to support our local chapters and artist. If you are interested in attending any of these seminars, please let me know and I will make travel arrangements for those interested. I will organize overnight lodging if necessary. * * * * * * *It is also time to think about semi-nars for 2015. I am looking for someone to co-chair this commit-tee with me. I enjoy painting but don’t focus on the artist, so it is my hope that the co-chair would focus on finding artist(s) to come to our chapter. I will then handle the registrations and the event. Please let me know if you are interested in accepting this position. Without a volunteer, we may not have any seminars again.Thank you for being a member of

PWP and please share other semi-nar information you may receive. Also, if you are thinking of attend-ing a seminar locally and need a buddy, let me know. Linda
