technique, the zincalume body panels
are welded in the corners and to the
chassis. As it is a rear-old camper, about
two thirds o the rear wall is part o the
hard oor/top rather than the structure
o the trailer itsel.
The new camper is painted a gold
colour, which gives it a rather distinctive
look. Checkerplate alloy is used or the

Cub Campers, having been around or
40 years, is something o an old hand
in the camper trailer business. Not only
does it have plenty o experience in the
Australian market, but it exports to Canada and
the US as well.Cubs model line-up is extensive everything rom
lightweight on-road models, to more rugged and well
equipped oroad models but still it has introduced
a ew new things or 2007, one o them being the
Kamparoo Brumby.
The Brumby is pitched at the serious oroad
market and it has been built that way. But, to keep
the price down, it doesnt come with all bells and
whistles ftted, thus giving it a wider market appeal.
Like all Cub campers, the Brumby is built on a hot
dipped galvanised chassis and 6in x 2in (150mm x
50mm) drawbar. Using a monocoque construction

this camper trailer comes with all the
essentials; setting up is a matter o
undoing the roo clips and winding the

the lower edge o the trailer. We think the rear tail lights, which
sit proud o the trailer and are thereore
vulnerable in any sort o rear end
contact, could be either recessed or
otherwise protected.
On the trailer top, with its adjustable
legs, the roo rack also doubles as a
oor rame.
Underneath the Brumby is where
the serious business happens. Being
an oroad trailer, the suspension
is Cubs independent setup. Theres
coil springs, trailing arms and shock
absorbers. A Cub eature is the exible
bearing bushes, which Cub claims will
reduce wear on the bushes, whereas
conventionally the shackle pin rubs on
the bush. Also underneath the Brumbyis the water tank, mounted orward
o the wheels and protected by
galvanised sheeting.
Things are quite busy on the drawbar.
Theres two 4.5kg gas cylinders, two
jerry can holders, a number o
storage boxes o dierent sizes, and a
steel-ramed mesh stoneguard. Tray
truck owners might like to check their
turning clearance with the latter we

had to be careul with ours.
There is also another attachment,
which is a eature unique to Cub the
Ezy-Wind system. Looking a little like
a similar attachment ound on boat
trailers, the Ezy-Wind strap hooks onto the ront o the trailer top/oor and,
when the Brumby is ully opened, makes
the job o closing it up easier, although
those used to the conventional method
might fnd the winch a little fddly.
on the level
Being a rear-old camper, setting up the
Brumby or a quick overnight stop takes
barely a minute. Select a piece o ground
that is reasonably level, unclip the our
latches holding the top down, disengage
the winder, and lit the top over, which
now becomes the oor. Ater the oor
has been made level, the internal hood
bows can be extended and press studs
attached all around the trailer and oor.
Attaching the awning does, o course,
take a little longer. It is 6t (1.82m) wide
and 17t (5.2m) long, thus covering the
kitchen area o to the side, towards theront o the Brumby.
The larger o the two storage boxes on
the ront drawbar contains the stainless
steel kitchen box, which slides out
once the bin door is opened and the
latch is released.
Built into the kitchen box is a stainless
steel sink with a hand pump or water,
but the cooktop is not fxed, being a
two-burner Companion old-up unit.
Its small enough to ft in one o the
two kitchen storage compartments, but
in some ways wed have settled or a
fxed unit theyre less fddly to set up.
At the ront o the trailer body, a good
size drawer can be used or a ew kitchen
items.
On the other side o the trailer,
matching locker doors give access to
more storage space.
Inside the Brumby, the canvas areahas large screened windows, along
with doors on either side. Both have an
yscreen insert in the top hal.
Up ront, the 6t 9in x 4t 6in (2m x
1.4m) oam mattress sits on a ply timber
base. An option is or an innerspring
mattress. The base o the bed lits up,
assisted by gas struts, to provide access
to the storage area underneath.
There is no lighting ftted to the trailer,
but a pair o bed reading lights would
be convenient. Wired or 240V and 12V,
the Brumby has sockets o both voltages
inside and outside the trailer, although,
curiously, a 12V battery is an option.
Charging, i ftted, is via an Anderson
plug on the tow vehicle.
Summing up
Built or the rough road, with all the
essentials engineered in, the Brumbylooks a little basic when compared to
some o its rear-old contemporaries.
But the price tag o $18,490 (plus
on-road and delivery costs) means a
more aordable rig or many camping
enthusiasts, especially those who
already have much o their own gear
and are set to hit the road.
