It took one month to do the entire project,” said Ulysses Leon. Alex Sanchez and Ul-ysses, both sophomores, who worked together and entered

their project in the annual CJUSD Science Fair that took place on Feb. 4. The science fair was hosted by BHS in the gym with over 100 exhibits that were displayed from all 28 schools in the district. Awards and medals were given out Feb. 6. Alex and Ulysses’s project was titled, “The Effect of the Ratio

of the Potassium Nitrate to Sucrose in Creating a Rocket” and built their rocket with materials that added up to only $5. “We saw a video of some-one making a rocket out of potassi-um nitrate, and the science fair just happened to be right around the corner,” said Alex. They were the Overall Sweepstakes Winner which means the project placed first in the district and they got to advance to SIMS, along with 35 others exhibits. SIMS is the Inland Science and Engineer-ing Fair and was held on April 6. Along with taking first place, Alex and Ulysses also received a $50 gift

card to Barnes & Noble. Ulysses en-tered because he wanted to see if he could do better than his peers. “I learned that if I put my mind to something challenging I can overcome it…even though I don’t nec-essarily like group work,” laughed Ulysses.

Other winners included: Samuel Rivera, Andrew Lopez and Mauricio Munoz who will also ad-vance to SIMS. Their project was titled, “Ordinary Substances Against Fire.” Andrew said about their group project, “We took second place. ties needed to get into the program. The Colton Woman’s Club, who organized all of it, ask for rec-ommendations of students from teachers who they see as a potential leaders. “Not many students submit-ted essays this time around,” said Mrs. Butterworth. In order to enter, students must write an essay that answers the questions that are giv-en. From there, the Woman’s Club narrows it down to the top 10-15 students with the highest GPA, read the essays, and choose the student who they think will most benefit from the experience. Ulysses wants to become a politician in the future. “I want to be able to help people later on life and I see politics as the best way to do that.” Students who get in the program get the chance to get a taste of the, “Col-lege experience.” They stay in dorms on campus with

roommates from different schools. The program consists of unique leadership training, service learn-ing, and motivation building ex-periences that will take place from 7AM-11PM for the three days that they are there. “I’m not scared to go by my-self, I know it’ll be a good experi-ence.

Oh my gosh. Everyone who went, absolute-ly loved it,” smiled counselor Mrs. Heather Butterworth.

The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leader-ship Foundation (HOBY), allows a student provided by their school to attend a three day seminar at Chap-man University in Orange, Califor-nia. “Honestly, I knew I had a fair shot of getting in but I didn’t think I would actually win,” said winner Ulysses Leon. He took two hours to write his winning submis-sion. “None of the clubs or sports here seem interesting to me and this caught my attention so I thought I would give it a shot and enter.” HOBY’s goal is to inspire and develop our global commu-nity of youth to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. Oral and/or written communica-tion skills, creative problem solving, and sensitivity to the needs or con-cerns of others are only some quali-

Our language is the re-flection of ourselves. A language is an exact reflection of the charac-

ter and growth of its speakers,” said Cesar Chavez once. That quote was also the theme for those who en-tered the annual Cesar Chavez Art & Writing Contest. Winner for the art por-tion, Jocelyn Paz, and winner for

the writing portion, Althea Bigay, took multiple hours to do their winning entry. Both of them also get to advance onto district judging. “We had around 28 art entries and 26 writing en-tries I believe,” said Mrs.Rizo. She was able to convince the admin team to give enough

On Feb. 15, 887 stu-dents were honored at the All-School Awards Night, first semester. Students

were given awards for Principal’s Honor Roll (having a 3.0 GPA or better), perfect attandance, or indi-vidual achievement in a subject. The cheer squad was on hand to cheer students and family as they walked into the foyer of the audito-rium and a photo backdrop of blue

On Feb. 18-19, Arden Garcia represented our campus as a member of the 2017 California

All-State Honor Choir. This is the highest honor any high school choir

member can receive – placing Ar-den in the category of the top 250 (100 if you count boys only) singers statewide. Arden’s

family traveled to San Jose, where he was tested one final time and then, under the guidance of a top-notch university conductor, spent two full days rehearsing for a final concert that took place on Saturday at Ca-thedral Basilica in downtown San Jose.

In related news: The BHS Music Programs was proud to announce that on March 1 at the combined Band and Choir

Concert, 18 students were inducted into the first class into the Nation-al Music Honor Society known as Tri-M. These students represent high standards academically, mu-sically, and in their commitment to the community. “To be inducted you had to audition with a non-pop song, meet the grade requirment which is a 2.5, have some sort of leadership skills and be part of a music program,” said Melissa Flores. “By being in-

Mrs.Rizo put up all the entries around her classroom and the staff were able to go in and vote for the one that they liked. “My essay was actually super last minute. I had stuff going on and I just didn’t have the motivation to enter this time around but I woke up at like 2 in the morning the day it was due and I typed it up and sub-mitted it,” said Althea. “It took me 5 days to do my painting,” said Joc-elyn. She entered mostly for fun but

The way we view the world and how we view ourselves in rela-tion to the world may affect the language that we speak. We see

ourselves in other people’s eyes. It is the nature of the human race. We are a spe-cies of reflection hungry for it in every facet of our existence. A valiant man named Cesar Chavez stands up for the oppressed through his utilization of Mere language. His perseverance in striving for social justice inspires the mass that violence consists of hatred towards one’s nation and our language is the remaining light which brings op-timism in ending the belligerence of society towards one another. Words are powerful for it will leave scars we cannot see which are the hard-est to heal and that makes it greater than violence. I will rather choke on the greatness of my language than to

nibble on the mediocrity of the hu-man violence. Chavez’s desires to move mountains of injustice leads the people to rise with dignity as he gives hope to the indigent and underrepresented by expanding the possibility for victory to all workers across the nation. He el-evates the bar for equality through his mass mobilizing technique of creating marches, boycotting the grape industry, and doing hunger strikes which even-tually becomes huge enough to call the attention to the government. His passion to assist the fallen becomes re-flected through his non-violent protests which directly sends out the signal that the bloodless battle will not just change the lives of the common people, but will also impact future generations’ percep-tion of society. Adversity does not build charac-ter, it reveals it through the manner of one’s language and how gracefully they fight through their circumstances. Back

when I lived in the Philippines, I did not know that I was living in a third-world country until I came here in the United States. It was never mentioned in my school how poor my country re-ally is. I never questioned it because the community was so united and we treat-ed our home land like it is paradise. In times of calamity, instead of compet-ing for resources due to heavy storms and flash floods obliterating our entire town, Filipinos would check up on their neighborhoods to ask them what they need while saying the words, “po” and “opo” which are words the we state after every sentence we say to show respect to the elderly. The power of language changes our percipience of the world and Chavez’s contributions to our soci-ety are remarkable for his ambitions we broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own. We can only be what we give ourselves the power to be. The victim can always become the victor if one chooses the dangerous liberty over the peaceful slavery. Chavez becomes the spokesperson for the oppressed because he was one himself too. His journey won monumental gains for farm work-ers, civil rights, political representation for racial miniorities and environmen-tal justice. Without Chavez having his voice heard, there will still be economic injustice, sexual, racial, and anti-immi-grant discrimination. We are drowning in informa-tion, but starving for knowledge. Vio-lence has filled our nation and it does not benefit anybody, but at the center of nonviolence stands the principle of love. There is no path to peace because peace is the path.
