East Bohemia and Horses!

East Bohemia is a land of horses. Many towns have horses in their coat of arms, representing cour-age and power. Our region of East Bohemia boasts many unique establishments such as the oldest stud in the Czech Republic – the National Stud at Kladruby nad Labem famous for their Kladruby white horses – then the most challenging continental horse racing course – Velká Pardubická Steeple Chase and the Horse Museum and stud at Slatiňany where Kladruby black horses are bred. The popularity of horse riding is increasing, the network of riding tracks is growing and the number of equestrian centres and stopovers is increasing. Many of them not only offer accommodation for riders and their horses, but it is also possible to rent a horse there. A wide range of equestrian cen-tres can satisfy all types of visitors – there are centres that offer a full range of services to satisfy even the most demanding customers and there are very simple farms where one can spend a night in a sleeping bag on a heap of hay next to one´s horse. Are you tempted to come and try? Do not hesitate and come to visit. There are about 600 km of marked riding tracks in the region that connect the most attractive places. They also connect East Bohemia with other regions – Central Bohemia, the Krkonoše Mountains and the Region of Vysočina. The network of equestrian centres offers accommodation for riders and their horses. They also cater for beginners to whom they offer short cross-country rides, tuition and equestrian sum-mer camps. This guide published by the Regional Council of Pardubický Region complements the Horse Rid-ing Map, already published, showing the network of horse riding tracks, equestrian centres and services offered. The Map has become very popular in the riding community and we believe that both the map and this guide will make your riding holidays in our region even more interesting and enjoyable. You will have a chance to see that the East Bohemian countryside looks even better from horseback.

PaRDUBICE – THE TOWN OF HORsEs

There are only a few towns famous for so many different things as Par-dubice. Pardubice is very often referred to as the town of gingerbread, sports, greenery, festivals, industry and, last but not least, horses.

Why is Pardubice so famous for horses? Nearly everybody in town is very keen on horses! For centuries the sound of horses trotting on cobbles has been heard around the town. A horse has been a symbol of the town since its foundation. The story has it that, in mid 12th century, a knight named Ješek fought courageously during the siege of Milan in Italy. After the town, the town was successfully invaded, the gate fell on his horse cutting it in half just behind the saddle. Ješek carried the remaining half of his horse back to the camp and for his bravery the Czech king endowed him with a coat of arms that has been used by Pardubice ever since. In the fi rst half of 19th century, stag hunting - when hunters ride horses and are accompanied by a pack of hounds - was very popular. Howev-er, in the course of time hunting started encountering more and more diffi culties and then it was replaced by the Velká Pardubická Steeple Chase. The founders of the steeplechase were very much inspired by the Liverpool Grand National. Their objective was to have hurdles

a bit different from the norm and therefore the racecourse at Pardubice is extremely challenging for both horses and jockeys. The fi rst race of 14 horses was on 5 November 1874. Apart from the war years, twice due to bad weather and then in 1968 due to the occupation the Velká Pardubická Steeple Chase has been held every year since it started.

The communist regime supported neither horse keeping nor horse rid-ing. After the political change in 1989 the local horse riding tracks have been repaired and many new stables and equestrian centres built. The local police at Pardubice use horses in the town centre for policing in the parks, around the garden allotments and during sports matches when the presence of the old Kladruby breed of horses can tame the emotions of fans.

On 3 May 2005, the representatives of Pardubice, Waregem, Bel-gium, Golega, Portugal and Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, signed an International Agreement establishing Euro Equus, The European As-sociation for Horse Culture and Heritage. The co-operation under this Association should contribute to the development of all activities as-sociated with horses in Pardubice.

Horse RacingThe Pardubice racecourse is one of one of the town jewels. The Velká Pardubická Steeple Chase is an internationally renowned sporting event. It is a sport and social event with the longest tradition in our country. The first steeplechase was organised in 1874. Velká Pardubická Steeple Chase is 6,900 meters long and horses are challenged with 31 fences. The Taxis Jump, Irish Bank, Snake Ditch, In and Out and others test the riding skills and good luck of jockeys. The most suc-cessful horse in the history of Velká Pardubická is Železník, which won four times in 1987-1989 and in 1991. Brigard won three times (1875,1877,1878), as did Lady Anne (1891,1894,1896), Epigraf (1957-1859), Korok (1969,1971,1972), Sagar (1981-1983) and Peruan (1998-2000). Among riders, Josef Váňa won five times and Václav Chaloupka and Peter Gehm collected four wins each. The only woman who has won Velká Pardubická was Lata Brandisová. She won with her mare Norma in 1937, the last year before the Second World War. The Eng-lish jockey Williamson who won Velká Pardubická in 1890 and 1893 is the only one whose name is also on the winner´s list of the Grand National Steeplechase at Liverpool. At present there are about 87 races a year at the Pardubice racecourse. The racecourse specialises in cross-country steeplechase, but there are also other races and a conventional steeplechase organised, most importantly the Pardubi-cká St.Leger Race.

The „Horses in Action“ Exhibition Every year on the first weekend in September an equestrian exhibition is organised at the Pardubice racecourse. Participants and visitors have the chance to see the racecourse, paddocks and stables. Horses of all breeds and types are exhibited here in many perspectives; the main programme includes horse shows and there

are also many accompanying events such as races, examples of riding skills, horse racing, races of heavy horse turnouts and many other events. The „HORSES IN ACTION“, a meeting of people and horses, is a unique interna-tional event of this kind in our country This is an important meeting of exhibitors, professionals, horse keepers, professional riders and charioteers. The exhibition programme is put together in co-operation with the equestrian and horse breeding associations that exhibit their thoroughbreds at this show. There are representa-tives of studs and horse keepers from abroad. There is also a fair trade for eques-trian equipment.

Sport8 years ago the racecourse opened to other riding disciplines. There are competi-tions in allround riding, horse jumping, dressage and the races of heavy horse turnouts. The most common are general equestrian events. In spring the Gold Horseshoe Qualification and the Prize of the President of Pardubický Region are taking place here and then in the autumn there is the closing allround race. During last eight years there were two European Junior and Young Riders Championships and this year there it was a three star competition organised for the first time in the history of the Czech Republic which was the qualification for the Olympics in Beijing. The Grand Prix of Pardubice is a horse jumping competition.During the „Horses in Action“ exhibition there are the Farm School League Finals. Every year there are several public training sessions in horse jumping and dres-sage organised for the nearby equestrian clubs. In spring there are several joint sessions with the leading Czech horse trainers.

As ideas, knowledge, arts and architecture come in and out of fash-ion, the preferred horse breeds remain. During the renaissance and early baroque periods, many horses in European countries came from Spain. That also applied to the Czech Kingdom. The history of Old Kladruby horses is closely linked to the place where they are bred – the National Stud at Kladruby nad Labem, whichis situated about 25 km west of Pardubice. Horse breeding in the Pardubice region has a tradition of several cen-turies. The Pernštejns, an aristocratic family, were important horse keepers at Kladruby nad Labem in the fi rst half of 16th century. In 1560 they sold their land, including Kladruby village, to the Czech estates who donated it to the emperor Maxmilian II. In 1579, by the appointment of Rudolph II, the stud became a royal stud. From then

to1918 the stud supplied the horses to the courts in Prague and Vi-enna. In the past Old Kladruby horses were in many colour variants, how-ever, from the end of 18th century they were either white or black. White horses were used for royal ceremonies and black horses were used by the church dignitaries.Under the reign of Charles VI, father of Maria Theresa, the Old Kladru-by breed fl ourished and the emperor also commissioned the construc-tion of the magnifi cent building for the Spanish Equestrian School in Vienna. Even though the stud at Kladruby nad Labem is more than four hundred years old, the fi rst breed records go back only to the mid 18th century because in 1757 there was a big fi re which destroyed the buildings including all records.

Page 7: Brozura Kone Male En

Old Kladruby white horses are the offspring of the black horse Pep-poli (1764), who was sire to the white horse Imperatore (1775) and Imperatore was sire to Generale. White horses were bred in two lines: Generale (founded in 1787) and Generalissimus (founded in 1797) and in four families. One family expanded so much that it split into three more. This large family is the most prominent and the names of mares start with letters E, A and P. Their dam was Alba VIII (Generale XXII), born in 1861. Family C started in 1894 by the mare Cariera (Blue Boy) and family R Ragusou I (Napoleone Amelia) in 1895. The youngest one is family S founded by the mare Sardinia (Maestoso Gratia). The breed of the Old Kladruby black horses originally consisted of two lines: Sacramoso and Napoleone. The Napolenone line ceased in 1922. The Sacramoso line was started by a black horse from Ries (near Salzburg), the archbishop’s stud. This line also ceased after some time, however, the second line of Sacramoso founded by the stallion Sacramoso born in 1800 at Kroměříž survived. After the First World War the breed of black horses was at risk of extinction and thanks to Prof. František Bílek, who also founded the Horse Museum at Slatiňany, this breed was saved. The Old Kladruby Horses started two lines of Lipizzaner horses: Favory and Maestoso. Lipizzaner horses were later used to improve the trait base of the Old Kladruby horses (Favory). A typical feature of the Old Kladruby horses is a convex head, medi-um size body with a bigger chest and long cannons. The Old Kladruby horses were bred for turnouts and are referred to as carriage horses as they were used in tandems for pulling heavy carriages. The National Stud at Kladruby nad Labem breeds horses at two facilities – at Kladruby, where there are white horses and at Slatiňany where there are black horses. There are about 1 300 Old Kladruby horses of which about one half is in the National Stud.

What can we offerWe can offer mating or insemination of mares with high qua-lity stallions, stabling during mating, nursing of young horses at Selmice.

The National Stud is open to visitors, it organises horse riding and coach driving training courses, offers coach rides, refres-hments in its cafeteria and runs a souvenir shop.

There are guided tours from April to October every day except Mondays at 11.00, 13.00, 14.30 and 16.00). For group boo-kings and other services, please call: +420 466 933 832, ore fax to +420 466 932 374. For more information see www.nhkladruby.cz.www.nhkladruby.cz

Slatiňany stud is part of the National Stud at Kladruby nad Labem and it is situated near Chrudim. It was founded late in 19th century and since 1945 Old Kladruby black horses have been bred there. This nearly extinct colour variant of the original Czech breed, with 400 years of history, was successfully saved here. Old Kladruby black horses were used by church dignitaries and today they are used for equestrian

sports, by mounted police and for pleasure rides. The Czech Nation-al Horse Register is maintained and administered here. The stud also includes the training centre at Heřmanův Městec and the foal nursery at Slavice. Next to the stud there is the Horse Museum. Our visitors can take pleasure rides on horses, try driving turnouts and take horse riding lessons, tours of stables and we also offer accommodation.

The venue is managed by the Pardubice Regional Offi ce of the National Heritage Institute. The medieval keep built on the rock above the Chru-dimka river in the 13th century was converted by the imperial architect Ulrico Aostalis in late 16th century into a renaissance chateau for Bo-huslav Mazanec. The most important owners of the chateau were the Auerspergs who had the chateau rebuilt into its current style. In 1945 the chateau was expropriated and in 1947 Prof. PhDr. et MUDr. František Bílek, DrSc started the Horse Museum here, which was open to the public

in 1950. It is the biggest and most comprehensive European museum dedicated to horses. It consists of two parts: scientifi c and artistic, where the works of the leading European artists inspired by horses, are dis-played. The collection of saddles and horse trappings documents several centuries of this trade. Visitors can also see a century old kitchen and the chateau barns. The park has an area of 16 hectares and it boasts the second largest collection of tree species in East Bohemia. In a fenced-off area there are wild Przewalski horses and Old Kladruby blacks.

MVDr Jiří Janda´s Training Centre Horse StablesThe high quality stable includes 24 stalls lined with oak and 3.5 m by 3.5 m each. They are provided with automatic drinkers and water monitors that are registered with the Czech Industrial Trade Mark Office in Prague.

Carrousel The indoor carrousel has 6 compartments and is 15 m in diameter. There are rubber mats for more comfortable and healthy walking of horses.

Indoor ArenaThis indoor arena is 40 m x 15 m. It is illuminated with floodlights and has a sloping tim-ber wall at the bottom to provide for riders´ safety. It can be used for riding and training in any weather.

Indoor Training CourseThe entire surface of the indoor training course is made of rubber. It is the first indoor course of this kind in Central and Eastern Europe. The course is 1,010 m long and 3 m wide. It required 240 tons of bulk rubber. The course is maintained everyday with special Cambridge rollers. It provides a safe surface for horse training during rainy days and frosts. It does not wear the horse organs of motion and significantly improves the riders´ safety. The course with rubber surface is protected by the Czech trade mark.

Horse Jumping SchoolThe Horse Jumping School is located on the farm woodland. The fences have the para-meters of Velká Pardubická Steeple Chase.

Horse YardsThe yards contribute to the overall comfort and better health of horses during their tra-ining. Their health condition is improved by a solarium, BEMER-VET magnetic therapy, through-flow pool to cool down their tendons. There is a beautiful view of the Orlické Mountains and Stolowe Mountains near Náchod and sometimes even of the top of Ke-prník Mountain at the Hrubý Jeseník Mountains in North Moravia.

Leisure ActivitiesAccommodationSunny Farm is an ideal place for weekend leisure activities because it is close to Par-dubice and Chrudim, however, it can also cater for holidaymakers. It offers high-quality environment-friendly accommodation for guests.

4 apartments with en-suite bathrooms. • Maximum accommodation capacity for 12 people. • 3 star accommodation guarantees a high standard. • The apartments have solid softwood furniture made from sustainable timber. • There are two small kitchens fully equipped with pots and pans, kitchen utensils • and crockery. There is also a fridge and a washing machine.

GymAfter the riding or rambling it is good to stretch a bit and relax in our gym. The gym has the following facilities:

An indoor pool US SPA SWIM with six jets and a whirlpool. It is illuminated, provi-• ded with water filters and chemistry control system. ROLLETIC, a body shaping and massaging devise. The bent oak bars slowly rotate • and massage your body. Recommended particularly for women! INFRAKABINA is an infrared sauna bath, a latest development in this area. The • skin surface is not overheated; the maximum temperature inside the sauna is 60°C. The body is warmed up from inside. It is very beneficial for internal organs, joints, tendons and it can help to reduce fat. The infrared sauna can also be used for warming up for about 20 minutes before going out for biking, jogging, tennis or in-line skating.

This place is rather unusual. It is located 15 km south of Pardubice and 10 km west of Chrudim. Not far from

these towns, but still hidden in forests. This is a place where horse keepers are jealous about their horses.

SLUNEČNÝ DVŮR - SUNNY FARM at Morašice-Holičky was established as a limited liability company on

15 June 1993 by Mr and Mrs Janda. The farm has become an equestrian centre and it is a unique training

centre headed by the racehorse trainer MVDr. Jiří Janda.

12

Riding School and In-line Course for ChildrenChildren can skate on their in-line and roller skates on a course located in the centre of the farm. It is about 100 meters long with a circle at each end for comfortable turning. It is suitable for small children. They can also take lessons in pony riding. There are two po-nies on the farm. Betina is excellent for beginners 4 to 6 years old and for more advanced young riders there is Simka, a foal. Equestrian equipment for young riders – hats, safety jackets and chaps – may be rented.

Restaurant „Na Farmě“The family restaurant offers 55 seats in winter and 100 seats in summer. The homemade meals are cooked by our chef and our guests can enjoy beautiful scenery while eating. There is a view of the farm and the grazing area with deer and boars. We also serve a children’s menu using organic food. The speciality of the restaurant „Na Farmě“ are green teas and infusions, honey liqueur and port wine. Dogs are welcome and they have their own mini-restaurant called „PET FRIENDLY RESTAURANT“.

Walks around the FarmThe surroundings of Sunny Farm are ideal for family walks. Horse enthusiasts should not miss out the Horse Museum and chateau at Slatiňany. At Slatiňany there is also a farm of the National Stud breeding Old Kladruby black horses. Old Kladruby white horses are bred at the National Stud at Kladruby nad Labem. At Chrudim there is a Puppet Museum and the town is famous for its Festival of Puppet Theatres. The Puppet Museum is a wonderful experience for the whole family. There is also a museum of folk architecture at Veselý Kopec at Hlinsko v Čechách where there are examples of timber cottages and many interesting events organised all year round. The regional capital of Pardubice is the cultural centre of the region. The historical town centre and the nearby castle at Kunětická hora are poupular tourist destinations. At Par-dubice there is also the racecourse where Velká Pardubická Steeple Chase happens eve-ry year, which is said to be the most challenging race on the Continent.

Scenic trips on horseback are becoming a very attrac-tive pastime in East Bohe-mia. In the Pardubice Re-gion there are some 600 km of waymarked riding trails and circular trails connecting individual horse riding cen-tres. Transit routes designated with a white square with a red disc in the middle connect the region with the neighbouring regions; secondary and intra-regional trails are marked with blue or yellow discs and circu-lar riding trails with coloured hooves. One of the “red” main routes forms part of a transit route, which leads from Vienna across South Bohemia and the Vysocina hills to the East Bo-hemian region; in the future this route should be extended further, across the Giant Moun-tains and Poland up to the Baltic. A second route leads from Central Bohemia across the Pardubice Region to North Moravia and a third connects the Zelezne Hory mountains in East Bohemia with South Moravia. A unique route is the yellow-marked trail which takes the riders through the city of Pardubice, just around the city centre, with-out much interference from the road traffi c. Other routes cut across the mountain ranges

of Orlicke hory (and its foot-hills), Zelezné hory or the northern part of Ceskomoravs-ka vrchovina.Since 2004 the marking of riding tracks in the Pardu-bice Region has been the re-sponsibility of the civic asso-ciation “Riding Tracks of East Bohemia” (Jezdecke stezky vychodnich Cech –www.hip-postezky-vc.info). Information on horse riding centres can be obtained from a printed map issued by the Pardubice Region and also on websites www.vychodni-cechy.info and www.pardubi-ckykraj.cz in the GIS – Mapy section.

East Bohemian Horse Riding

Track Code

There is a set of rules that apply to horse riding tracks, which must be observed as these tracks are very of-ten also rambling and cycling paths, they cross roads and private land. This is the reason why it is essential to observe the Code.A group can consist of a maxi-mum of ten horses. A group of this size or even a smaller one is much more mobile and it is easier for the guide to re-spond quickly in case of an un-expected situation.

If a bigger group wants to trav-el together, it must be divided into smaller groups of maxi-mum ten horses each and the gap between the groups must be at least 500 meters. A guide leads the group and it is either the guide or a group leader who is in charge. This person has a mobile telephone and , at the set-off point, must ask for the itinerary describing the journey to the next stopo-ver and get the latest update on the track condition. The group must follow the marked riding path and must not divert into fi elds and woods outside the marked track or disturb and chase game and deer. The group must follow the local measures and traf-fi c restrictions. There might be temporary traffi c restric-tions that apply to some sec-tions of the track. This should be duly communicated at eve-ry centre. The restrictions may be introduced not to disturb deer and game during mating and nursing seasons. In these circumstances a temporary timetable for the traffi c on the relevant track section applies. This measure must be strictly followed. Riders must be considerate to other path users. There

might be pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians must be passed only by walking and at a safe distance. Pass-ing or overtaking cyclists must be done very cautiously. Their colourful t-shirts and helmets may have different effects on horses. Do not race with the cyclists. If two riders pass each other it is necessary to change to walk and pass the other rider on left (in line with the road traffi c code). The track is not a racecourse. There are sections suitable for trotting however full gallop is not allowed. Any obstacles on the way must be bypassed or stepped over while walking. Jumping is not safe because the quality of landing place is unpredictable. It is possible to overtake an-other rider at a safe distance so he could see you and be prepared for the reaction of his/her horse. You should overtake another rider by a high step. It is rude to overtake a trotting rider by going in full gallop. Camping outside the stopo-ver stations is possible only at designated camp sites or if allowed by the land own-er. Every rider undertakes the journey at his/her own risk.

If the rider sustains a loss or injury caused by the character of the terrain he/she cannot claim damages from the land or forest owner or the asso-ciation of „Jezdecké stezky východních Čech“ (East Bohe-mian Horse Riding Tracks). A group riding in the forest must always follow the marked path that goes on a compacted or not-compacted surface and forest tracks. The leader must always pro-vide for cleaning the droppings at least from the path and par-ticularly if the path is also used by ramblers and cyclists.Should there be any issue raised by the land owner or public body (represented by a forest ranger, police etc.) the leader must immediately advise the nearest station and then jointly deal with the is-sue.
