For the past several years, the Brownwood Rotary Club has sponsored the Annual Holiday Arts & Crafts Show in November. This year, the show will be held Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12 in the Coliseum. Show hours will be Friday from 5 to 9 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission will be $5 per person. As in previous years, artisans and crafters from the Brownwood area and from other cities around the state will offer mostly hand-made or embellished items. Items that will be available include jewelry, clothing, leather goods, wood crafts, hand-painted items as well as home-made soaps, jellies and jams. However, these will be new features added to this year’s show. First, the Brownwood Quilters Guild will do demonstrations of quilting trends and techniques. The guild was formed in 1984 with approximately 6 members and they met at each other’s homes. In 2005 they hosted their first quilt show at the homemaking building at the rodeo grounds and discovered immediately that it was not large enough. The show moved to the coliseum in 2006 and has been there ever since. Membership at the beginning of the first quilt show was approximately 20-25 and their current membership is approximately 50. Angela McCorkle is the group’s President, Marcella League is the Vice President and Doris Rice is the Secretary/Treasurer. They will have a donation quilt available for viewing at the show along with several other quilts made by members. In addition, the Holiday Show will feature a “Pamper Me For the Holidays” section. Local businesses will offer mini-facials, chair massages, manicures/ pedicures, holiday make-up tips, flowers, perfumes and the latest in ladies fashions and accessories. There will be fashion shows presented by local clothing stores— times to be announced. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our Board Room! Fes-tival planning is in full swing with everyone having their assignments and being very excited about mov-ing the festival to the Depot complex! Thursday, December 1st will begin the festivities with the Annual Lighted Christmas Parade beginning at dark. Friday, December 2nd and Saturday, December 3rd the Christmas Under the Stars Festival will be held from 4pm-8pm in the Margaret and Stuart Coleman Depot Complex. This year, we will have many of the same activities as the first year with all

activities planned being of little or no cost so that everyone can partici-pate. In the spirit of giving, we are

taking donations of nonperishable food items, as well as new un-

wrapped toys. The food items will be going to provide area families with a Christmas meal and accord-

ing to Angelia Bostick with Good Samaritan Ministries, the anticipated need this year is approximately 2,000.

Toys will be taken to Toys For Kids to assist in providing Christmas for more than 2,200

families. There will be activ-ities for the kids, photos with Santa, storytelling, mini skits

by Lyric performers, bounce houses, Christmas karaoke, yummy food and hot chocolate, a scavenger hunt, and an Amazing Race type contest for ages 18 and up. The Santa’s Sleigh 5k will also be taking place again this year with a new location. Local talent will be showcased under the Pavilion and a movie will be shown on the lawn. This is one Christmas celebration you do not want to miss, so be there and stay off of Santa’s naughty list! Please check our website www.visit-brownwood.com for more information or feel free to contact the Chamber at 325-646-9535.

The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly luncheon on Friday, October 21 at the Brownwood Country Club from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. The luncheon, which is open to members and guests, will feature an interesting program and will also include door prizes, introduction of new members and a cash drawing. This month’s presentation will feature information from the Retail Coach. The consulting firm will release its retail study of Brownwood to local business owner and entrepreneurs for

the first time during the luncheon. The initial phase of their study showed that actual sales in Brownwood’s Retail Trade Area verses opportunity in the market show a short-fall of $422 mil-lion. Their report indicates that there are an estimated 82,225 people who reside in Brownwood’s Retail Trade Area. Based on state averages, this population would ordinarily spend $705 million in retail goods and services each year. Actual sales locally, however, are only $283 million annually. Some of the

categories with the greatest “leakage” or opportunity for expansion include eating places, clothing, footwear, elec-tronics and hobby or game shops. The Retail Coach will give a com-plete overview of the study during a lunch-hour presentation. A more detailed analysis will continue at 1:15 pm after the lunch presentation. A complete copy of the study and all of its findings will be available following the meeting. The Retail Coach was hired through a joint effort of the City of Brown-

wood, Brownwood Economic Develop-ment Corporation, and the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce to help strengthen the area’s retail base by as-sisting local retailers as well as looking to recruit new retail businesses to the area. The cost of the luncheon is $10 per person to be paid at the door. Anyone interested in attending the luncheon is urged to RSVP to the Chamber by call-ing 325-646- 9535.
