2 FRIDAY NIGHT FAST FORWARD | BROWNWOOD BULLETIN | 10.25.12BROWNWOOD LIONS (4-3, 2-0) vs. LAMPASAS BADGERS (1-6, 0-2)

DERRICK STUCKLY | BROWNWOOD BULLETINKyle Steele and the Brownwood Lions will attempt to stretch their win streak to four games and improve to 3-0 in District 8-3A action when they host the Lampasas Badgers Friday night.

BY DERRICK STUCKLY BROWNWOOD [email protected]

In a matter of two weeks, the Brownwood Li-ons have gone from a likely playoff qualifier still searching for an identity to district champion-ship contender with a stifling defense.

Coming off a 32-18 road victory over pre-season District 8-3A favorite Liberty Hill, the Lions (4-3, 2-0) find themselves atop the league standings with Gatesville (7-0, 2-0) — and can set up a showdown with the Hornets next week for the 8-3A crown if they get past the Lampasas Badgers (1-6, 0-2) Friday night at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Brownwood fourth-year head coach Bob Shi-pley stated last week’s victory over Liberty Hill ranked among the biggest of his career, along with the Lions’ 49-16 rout of Stephenville in 2010, Coppell’s 56-53 double-overtime win over Southlake Carroll in 2008 that snapped the Drag-ons’ 38-game district win streak and Burnet’s 2002 state semifinals triumph over Jasper at Kyle Field in College Station.

Shipley proclaimed “the Brownwood Lions have arrived,” during his post-game address to the team last week after the Lions put forth the type of performance the coaching staff has been looking for since late August.

“We played with great intensity for four quar-ters,” Shipley said. “We finally put together a full game on both sides of the ball and the results were what we’ve been waiting for all year.”

The Lions will look to maintain that momen-tum and stretch their win streak to four Friday night against a Lampasas squad that is strug-gling following a 10-2 playoff campaign a year ago. The Badgers have opened district action with losses of 33-13 to Gatesville and last week’s 20-13 defeat at the hands of Llano. Lampasas’ lone victory this season has come against Austin Travis, 33-27, in the second outing of the season, and the Badgers have dropped their last five.

Shipley has warned the Lions that Lampasas is in a nothing-to-lose position, and is anxious to see how the team responds following last week’s signature victory.

“No doubt we’ll have to battle the after effects of a big win,” Shipley said. “It takes a lot of maturity on the kids’ part to do that. As much as we’d like to enjoy that win, it’s behind us now so we have to be focused on this game. Lampasas can salvage their season with a win Friday night against the Brownwood Lions.”

Lampasas enters the game averaging 16 points and 279 yards of total offense per game — 247 rushing and 32 passing. Steven Jazdyk leads the

BY DERRICK STUCKLY BROWNWOOD [email protected]

EARLY — Early head coach Brad Bowden stated prior to last week’s game against Bangs that the toughest portion of the Longhorns’ district schedule was still to come.

On the heels of a 42-7 defeat last week, the Longhorns (3-5, 3-1) will attempt to rebound against the district favorite Wall Hawks (6-1, 3-0), who have routed each district opponent they’ve faced thus far.

“Wall has a really strong team,” Bowden said. “They have some outstanding line-man, big bodies that move well and have a lot of speed in the backfield.”

Despite last week’s setback, the Long-horns are still in control on their play-off destiny. If Early defeats either Wall or Comfort in the final two games, the Longhorns will earn their first trip to the playoffs since 2008.

“We discussed the different scenarios with the team, but told them to focus on getting better and playing our best,” Bowden said.

In order to pull off the upset against the district co-leading Hawks, who are riding a five-game win streak heading into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. showdown in Wall, the Longhorns must correct the errors that led to last week’s defeat.

“We were inconsistent,” Bowden said. “Our defense made some good plays to keep us in the game in the first half. We received the opening kick in the second half, down one score, so we had an op-portunity to get back in the game, but we turned the ball over on the first series and Bangs turned it into points. That put us into a deep hole and we couldn’t get back out of it.

“Bottom line, we turned the ball over too many times and struggled at the line of scrimmage on offense and defense. When you do that, it normally doesn’t turn out well and last Friday was no exception.”

The Longhorns finished with 223 yards of total offense, but lost four costly turn-overs. Defensively, Early surrendered 338 yards to Bangs.

For the season, Early is producing 21 points and 264 yards — 148 passing and 116 rushing — per contest, while turning the ball over 22 times.

6 BANGS DRAGONS (4-3, 2-1) vs. COMFORT BOBCATS (3-4, 3-0) FRIDAY NIGHT FAST FORWARD | BROWNWOOD BULLETIN | 10.25.12

BY DERRICK STUCKLY BROWNWOOD [email protected]

BANGS — The Bangs Dragons returned to the win column in emphatic fashion last week and will look to knock another team off its perch in the District 3-2A Division standings and end that squad’s three-game win streak in the process.

The Dragons (4-3, 2-1), who are coming off a 42-7 road victory over Early, will host the Comfort Bobcats (3-4, 3-0) — a team whose season has mirrored that of the Longhorns — at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Like Early, Comfort’s three district victo-ries have come at the expense of Ingram Tom Moore (4-3, 0-3), Grape Creek (2-6, 0-4) and Brady (1-7, 1-3).

“Comfort is in the same boat as Early was going into last week,” said Bangs head coach Chuck Lipsey. “They played tough a pre-district schedule, they didn’t win any games, but they’re 3-0 in district now and right at the top.”

A victory Friday night will likely lock up the second playoff seed from the district for the Dragons, who conclude their regu-lar season against Ingram Tom Moore and Brady.

“Everybody wants to get in the playoffs, that’s your goal going in, and I told the kids we need to win the last four in a row and we will win four in a row if we play well,” Lipsey said. “We got the first rung on the ladder last week against Early, now we have to get Comfort. This is a fun time of year. A playoff race is great to be a part of, but at the same time you have to pre-pare yourself to play well in the playoffs in these games down the stretch, regard-less of who you’re playing.”

In last week’s 35-point win over Early, Bangs outscored the Longhorns 28-0 after halftime. The Dragons finished with 338 yards of total offense and allowed 223 yards while forcing four turnovers — in-cluding a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown by Matt Carter.

“Our kids went over there and played hard for four quarters,” Lipsey said. “We went in at halftime up 14-7 and our kids really came out and executed well in the second half. That was also the best defen-sive game we’ve played well year. We did a good job containing them and a good job tackling them and not letting them have the big play. The only part that was frustrating was we didn’t capitalize on a

The only victory for Rising Star thus far was a 26-8 decision over Panther Creek, which at one point was ranked in the Six-Man Division II Top 10 but forfeited its last game due to a lack of players.

In the Wildcats’ other outings this season, they fell to Lingleville (51-6), May (68-0), Trent (76-38), Paint Rock (27-14), Bryson (45-41) and Blanket (46-0). Rising Star is averaging 19 points per game and allowing 46.

Strawn, meanwhile, has suffered just one blemish, a 36-34 loss to rival Gordon.

The Greyhounds have toppled Walnut Springs (52-6), El Paso Jesus Chapel (83-21), Bryson (73-24), Lueders-Avoca (60-14), Newcastle (54-8) and Brookesmith (57-0). Strawn is producing 59 points and surren-dering 16 points per game on average.

Rising Star is a 45-point underdog ac-cording to sixmanfootball.com.

Coleman (1-6, 0-2) at Ballinger (6-1, 1-1)

7:30 p.m. FRIDAY

The Coleman Bluecats find themselves in a must-win situation in regard to reach-ing the playoffs for the second consecu-tive season as they venture to Ballinger Friday.

Coleman, which has lost four straight contests, has opened District 4-2A Divi-sion II action with losses of 24-6 to Hamil-ton and 34-14 to Cisco.

Ballinger, which suffered a district open-ing 20-13 loss to Colorado City, bounced back with a 20-17 win over Hawley last week.

The Bluecats enter the game averaging 13 points and 225 yards of total offense

— 183 rushing and 42 passing. Defensive-ly, Coleman is allowing 25 points and 312 yards — 236 rushing and 76 passing.

Comanche (2-5, 1-2) at Eastland (6-2, 4-0)

7:30 p.m. FRIDAY

The Comanche Indians’ playoff hopes going forward will rely greatly on the out-come of Friday night’s encounter with the District 4-2A Division I leading Eastland Mavericks.

An upset Friday night would keep the Indians’ postseason aspirations very

much alive, while a loss will all but end Comanche’s chances.

Heading into Friday’s outing, Comanche is averaging 21 points and 276 yards — 172 rushing and 104 passing — per game, while giving up 29 points and 354 yards — 226 on the ground and 128 through the air.

Quarterback Caisson Montieth has con-nected on 30 of 63 passes for 428 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 235 yards and three scores.

Jaden Roberts leads the ground game with 347 yards and a touchdown trailed by Salvador Marquez with 155 yards and two touchdowns and Rodrigo Martinez with 104 yards.

Jaylon Roberts is the top receiver for Comanche with 15 catches for 200 yards and three scores while Daniel Davila has grabbed six receptions for 104 yards and scored three times.

Badgers’ rushing attack with 693 yards and five touchdowns trailed by Robby Hall with 231 yards and a pair of scores. Quar-terback Kleg Kennedy has completed just 13 of 30 passes for 155 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

The Lions will be facing a run-heavy offense for the second straight week, but Brownwood limited Liberty Hill’s vaunted slot-T ground attack to just 150 yards on 48 carries, and the Panthers to a grand total of 169 yards as an offense.

For the season, Brownwood — led by linebackers Henry Rivas (77 tackles, three for loss, one sack), Mack Monsen (75 tack-les, six for loss, three sacks), Jace Newman (66 tackles, eight for loss, eight sacks) and Dylan Lewis (62 tackles, one for loss, two sacks), safeties Kaimon Ontiveros (46 tack-les, one interception) and Dylan Martin (43 tackles, one for loss) and end Bryce Vick-ers (31 tackles, three for loss, one sack and one interception) — is allowing 22 points and 294 yards per game, 136 rushing and 158 passing, with 11 turnovers forced.

“The offense is basically the same as Liberty Hill’s was,” Shipley said. “There are a few different wrinkles so that should be a plus for us because we’ve already been

working on it for the past week. They have the ability to keep the ball away from the opponent’s offense. They’ve had quarters when the opponent only got the ball once,

so we have to be smart when we have the ball and make each possession count.”

During the Lions’ three-game win streak, Brownwood is surrendering just 15 points

and 247 yards per game, with five turn-overs forced.

“We’re being more aggressive,” Shipley said of the defense’s recent performances. “Defense is all about aggressiveness — be-ing the giver, not the taker. We’re keeping our pad level down on the line which is a must against the slot-T offense.”

On the flip side of the ball, the Badgers are yielding 29 points and 354 yards — 188 rushing and 166 passing — per outing and will attempt to slow down a Lions’ of-fense that is generating 23 points and 270 yards — 151 passing and 119 rushing.

“They play sound defense,” Shipley said. “They’ve played several close games because their defense is really good. It’s allowed them to stay in striking distance in a lot of games.”

Quarterback Chris Keesee has complet-ed 104 of 151 passes for 1,050 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, while Cooper Howey leads Brownwood with 38 receptions for 434 yards and eight scores. Matt McCrane has chipped in 18 catches for 213 yards and a score, Eddie Duque owns 12 receptions for 150 yards and two trips to the end zone and Jared Crouch has emerged in recent weeks with 10 grabs for 70 yards.

ton, Kevin Hobbs, Caleb Wilbourn, Jaylen Bocknite and Cody Skains, the rushing game has been sparked by Braxton Kilgo (102-409, 6 TDs), Duque (28-213, TD), Daylon Johnson (36-115, 3 TDs) and Martin (23-95).

Against Liberty Hill, Keesee and Howey connected on three scoring tosses as Brownwood passed for 127 yards with the senior receiver pulling down six receptions for 78 yards.

“It started with better protection,” Shi-pley said of the efficiency of the passing game. “It wasn’t perfect but it was much better than the week before. I really think our kids are just now getting the finer points of this offense. Chris has a better idea of where his receivers are going to be and the receivers have a better idea where and when the ball will be thrown.”

The Lions iced last week’s victory with a 13-play, 80-yard touchdown drive — that included overcoming a holding penalty that negated a 56-yard scoring sprint — which chewed 6:58 off the clock and featured nine rushing plays, steal-ing a page from Liberty Hill’s playbook as Brownwood’s ground game matched its preseason expectations in the most critical moment of the season to date. Though the Lions rushed for just 120 yards in the game, 57 came on the final march.

“It doesn’t look dominating if you just look at the stats, but the key is we had to run to the ball and everyone knew it,” Shipley said. “We challenged our linemen and they answered the call. It should be a confidence booster and hopefully we’ll continue to improve.”

The Lions were also aided last week by no turnovers and a season-low four penalties — both areas in which Shipley

wanted to see improvement. Whether or not Brownwood can equal those types of numbers down the stretch could be the de-ciding factor in how long the 2012 season lasts.

As for Friday night, carrying over last week’s fire and improved special teams play will be the keys to defeating Lampa-sas, according to the Lions’ head coach.

“We have to continue to play with a lot of intensity,” Shipley said. “We can’t afford to have a hangover from last week. We have to play with a lot of emotion and not let their offense control the game. We can’t get impatient on offense. It would be nice to get an early lead and force them to throw the ball, but we have to take what they give us and be patient offensively.

“Also, we obviously have to do a better job on our kickoff coverage. Giving up a touchdown return last week is not ac-ceptable. It’s all about each player taking responsibility for their assignment and doing a better job of getting off blocks and closing in on the return man.”

“Five Star Quality Rating” (www.medicare.gov) “Come see what a nursing home should be.”

163 passes for 1,067 yards with 12 touchdowns and three inter-ceptions, while rushing for 159 yards and three scores. Jake Fish-er leads the ground game with 628 yards and six scores, while Chris Moreno has chipped in 161 yards and a touchdown. Leading receivers for Early include Austin Isom (22-382, 5 TDs), Chase Riker (22-223, 2 TDs), Colin Walker (20-174, 3 TDs) and Fisher (13-166, 2 TDs).

Wall — which is coming off its district bye — has surrendered just 16 points per game on average during its five-game win streak and no more than 20 in a game. In the Hawks’ most recent outing, a 57-20 victory over Bangs, Wall yielded 303 yards of total offense, with 198 coming through the air.

“Wall’s defensive alignment makes it difficult to run through the middle, and their team speed makes running on the perim-eter difficult as well,” Bowden said. “We have to pass the ball effectively to loosen them up and that is where we have been inconsistent. I want to see us execute cleanly and consistently. We know it will be a tremendous challenge but it’s one we need to take on determined to come away better.”

Defensively, the Longhorns are surrendering 29 points and 307 yards — 207 rushing and 100 passing — per contest, but have forced 20 turnovers. Leading the charge for the Early defense

are Cody Morrison (80 tackles, six for loss), Junior Sanchez (59 tackles, nine for loss), Fisher (57 tackles, three fumble recoveries), Brandon Moore (39 tackles, five for loss) and Ricky Corona (36 tackles, four for loss).

Wall is averaging 54 points per game over the last five and have tallied no fewer than 29 points in a game this season. Against Bangs, the Hawks finished with 521 yards of total offense, includ-ing 476 yards rushing on 42 car-ries — 11 yards per rush. Grant Eubank ran for 226 yards and three touchdowns, Luke Dacy chipped in scoring scampers of 55 and 4 yards, Kris Gutierrez added a 12-yard touchdown run and Dacy threw a 15-yard touch-down pass to Brent Matschek.

“Defensively, we want to do our best to limit the number of big plays,” Bowden said. “We need to play strict assignment foot-ball and make good tackles. The biggest concern is maintaining assignment responsibility while at the same time defeating blocks and dealing with their speed.”

In regard to what will be required for the Longhorns to come away with the upset vic-tory, keeping the ball in their own hands is the greatest key, accord-ing to Bowden.

“You have to do your best to keep the ball away from them as much as possible,” Bowden said. “To do that, we have to execute offensively so we can keep the chains and clock moving. They have a really strong defense, so it will be a difficult job, but it’s necessary to be able to win the game.”

couple of scoring opportunities in the second quarter.”

Heading into Friday’s contest, the Dragons are averaging 31 points and 303 yards — 178 passing and 125 yards rushing.

Quarterback J.T. Newton, who account-ed for five touchdowns last week against Early, has completed 77 of 135 passes for 1,240 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions, while rushing for 174 yards and six scores.

Matt Carter leads Bangs with 24 recep-tions for 427 yards with seven touch-downs, Aaron Keller has grabbed 14 passes for 327 yards and a score, Josh Beckwith has pulled down 11 catches for 73 yards and three trips to the end zone and Cameron Deal has caught 10 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, Trenton Morgan — who is questionable as he continues to recover from a dislocated elbow — paces the Dragons with 289 rushing yards and four touchdowns while Deal has chipped in 220 yards and four scores, Efrayin Guer-rero has rushed for 133 yards and a score and Beckwith has contributed 107 yards and three touchdowns.

Comfort counters with a defense that allows 30 points per game, but has surrendered just 15 points per outing in district. During pre-district action, the Bobcats were outscored by Sonora, Blanco, Mason and Bandera by an average score of 41-12.

“Comfort is a little bit of a different team in that they are big and physical in the middle,” Lipsey said. “They’re not as quick as Early on the perimeter, but they do a good job in the middle. They’re the biggest team we’ve played all year with guys on the defensive line around 250,

260 pounds. We’re going to have to block well, get the ball on the perimeter and throw under them and over them. That’s the game plan going in.”

Defensively, the Dragons are surren-dering 29 points and 314 yards — 188 rushing and 126 passing — but have forced 18 turnovers. Bangs’ defense has been spearheaded by linebackers Keller (73 tackles), Tanner Shaw (66 tackles), Josh Truelove (48 tackles) and Beckwith (45 tackles), along with Deal (42 tackles) in the secondary.

The Bobcats are generating 32 points per game for the season, and 57 points per contest during their current three-game win streak. In Comfort’s 61-6 district-opening win over Ingram Tom Moore, tailback Ryan Lich rushed for 151 yards and three scores and also hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Colton Reeh. Reeh finished with 151 yards through the air and 83 on the ground as the Bobcats compiled 513 yards of total offense.

“Offensively, Comfort started out the season running all spread, but they don’t have the personnel to do that,” Lipsey said. “Since then, they’ve gone to a double tight end, T-formation and are playing smash mouth football. They try and run it down your throat and catch your safeties up close and try and do some play action. They’ll still get in the spread some, but if they have control of the game they’re go-ing to line up and run straight at you.”

On the injury front, Lipsey stated Mor-gan, Gabe Perez and Gareth Petty are all improving and might be ready for Friday night, but each is being evaluated on a day by day basis.

“We just want to make sure they are good to go and ready when we put them in,” Lipsey said. “Their injuries aren’t go-ing to get any worse, but we have to make sure they can give us close to 100 percent when they’re playing.”
