ClimateBrownsville has a humid subtropical climate just outside of a hot semi-arid climate. Yet the nearby waters of the Gulf of Mexico help keep Brownsville cooler during the summer rela-tive to cities further inland such as Laredo and McAllen. � us temperatures above 100 °F (37.8 °C) are uncommon, with an average of only 1.1 days reaching that level of heat.

Travel Itineraries

The Brownsville Heritage Trail

� e Brownsville Heritage Trail is a series of trails organized to take you past Brownsville’s most important historic homes and buildings. Each walking tour takes about ten to twenty min-utes to complete. Many locations will have o� cial markers with text descriptions, to interpret the signi� cance of these historic sites and events. A good place to be-gin is the Stillman House Mu-seum or the Historic Brownsville Museum.

A second part of the Heritage Trail is a driving tour provided by the Brownsville Historical Association. � is guide also pro-vides reference points and direc-

tions to other historical sites and battle� elds such as the Palo Alto National Historical Site and the Battle of Palmito Ranch. In addition other at-tractions such as the hangar of the Commemorative Air Force Museum and Costumes of the Americas can be found in the city.

Palo Alto National Historical Site

� e course Mexico and United States was forever changed by the opening battles of the Mexican-American War at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma in 1846. At the end of the Mexi-can-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and the area where Brownsville is now located was con� rmed as being American territory.

Battle of Palmito Ranch

With the onset of the Civil War, Confederate cotton exports left via neutral Mexico from the Port of Bagdad, at the Mouth of the Rio Grande, to evade the Union blockade. Brownsville traders and intriguers prospered as part of the lifeline of survival for the Confederacy. � e last battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Hill Ranch was fought May 13, 1856, � ve weeks after the Union surrendered at Appomatox. Visiting these

important historical landmarks, will give you a deep understanding of the vast history that Brownsville has to o� er.

Historic Brownsville Museum

Brownsville has attained a no-table record for its adaptive use of old structures that resemble nineteenth century Mexican-Spanish Colonial architectural traditions with formal and folk building practices from Texas to forge a unique, Rio Grande Val-ley architecture style as seen in the reuse of the Southern Paci� c Depot, which now serves as the Historic Brownsville Museum.

Stillman House Museum & Heritage Complex

Built in 1850 for Henry Miller, the Stillman House Musuem is a brick Greek Revival structure re-putedly occupied by Brownsville’s founder Charles Stillman. Ad-ditionally , the Heritage Complex next to the Stillman House Mu-seum provides a broad perspective of the history of the areas.

Commemorative Air Force Museum

Visit the Commemorative Air Force Museum and take an excit-ing and educating tour through United States WW-II history.Watch the events unfold, from the preludes to war in Asia and Eu-rope to the fall of the � ird Reich

and the defeat of the Japanese Empire. Barnstormers Lounge, provides a relaxing ambience to enjoy delicious snacks after tour-ing the museum.

Gladys Porter ZooVisit Gladys Porter Zoo and en-joy the lush gardens of this oasis � lled with exotic plants and ani-mals from around the world. � e animal collection at the zoo was assembled to re� ect the diversity of wildlife, with an emphasis on breeding rare and endangered species. Opened in 1971 as one of the � rst zoos in the country with no barred cages, most animal spe-cies are displayed in settings that closely resemble their own natural habitats. Visitors will encounter a diverse ensemble of 337 species of animals and 225 species of plants. � e park is divided into four zoo-geographic areas: Africa, Asia, Tropical Americas and Indo-Australia.

Boca Chica Beach

Relax in the pristine shores of one of Texas last undeveloped beaches. Bordered by the Brazos Santiago Pass Jetties and the mouth of the Rio Grande River, Boca Chica Beach has no paved streets, hotels or amenities; just beautiful white sand where you can enjoy a day of � shing, sur� ng or camping.

South Texas Tropics

Nested in the banks of the once mighty Rio Grande, the city o� ers visitors many ways to enjoy the sunshine with an excellent array of outdoor recreational opportunities.

Resaca de la Palma State Park

Brownsville’s Resaca de la Palma State Park boasts the largest tract of native habitat in the World Birding Center network. With more than 1,200 acres of trails and local wildlife this beautiful paradise is the perfect location for biking, hiking, and bird-watching.

Sabal Palm Sanctuary

For birders and nature-lovers, no visit to South Texas is complete without a stop at the Sabal Palm Audubon Center. � e Center is home to many native species of plants and animals that reach the northernmost limit of their Mexican range here and do not occur elsewhere in the U.S.

Charro Days, a week-long � esta, celebrates the long-time friend-ship between Brownsville and its sister city, Matamoros, Mexico. Charro Days is held the last week of February and features folkloric dancing, mariachis, food and parades. With the concur-rent Sombrero Festival and Mr. Amigo Association activities, � esta-goers have live concerts with popular and Tejano music, a Jalapeño Eating Contest, Grito Contest, Tortilla Toss, local food, dances, and loads of fun.

� e CAF Air Fiesta brings vin-tage and military aircraft to the skies over Brownsville in March. A signature event in Brownsville is the annual Latin Jazz Festival in October, which features some of the best regional and national acts.

� e arts continue to expand their o� erings with the help of many Brownsville organizations. � e University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Arts & Entertainment Season is � lled with opera, Latin dance, Russian ballet, stage productions and other classic performances. � e UTB-TSC Patron of the Arts Series o� ers numerous

artistic and musical presentations throughout the academic year.

� e Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts brings special, world-class musical concerts to town throughout the year. One of their more popular events is the annual Guitar Ensemble Festival. � e Brownsville Museum of Fine Art stages major events includ-ing two international shows in March and April.

� e Camille Lightner Playhouse presents an ongoing schedule of live productions, about every six weeks, with special youth theatre productions throughout the year. � e Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale showcases their tal-ent at a number of performances in Brownsville.
