The History of Tanning
DHA (The main tanning ingredient) was first recognized as a skin coloring agent by a German
scientists in the 1920' s. Through its use in the x-ray process, it was noted as causing the skin surface
to turn brown when spilled.
In the 1950s, Eva Wittgenstein at the University of Cincinnati did further research with
dihydroxyacetone. Her studies involved using DHA as an oral drug for assisting children with
glycogen storage disease. The children received large doses of DHA by mouth and sometimes spat or spilled the substance onto their skin. Healthcare workers noticed that the skin turned brown after a
few hours of DHA exposure.
Eva Wittgenstein continued to experiment with DHA painting liquid solutions of it onto her own skin. She was able to consistently reproduce the pigmentation effect and noted that DHA did not penetrate
beyond the stratum or dead skin surface layer. Research then continued on DHA' skin colouring effect in relation to treatment for patients suffering from vitiligo.
This skin browning effect is nontoxic and similar to the Maillard reaction. DHA reacts chemically with
the amino acids in the skin, which are part of the protein containing keratin layer on the skin surface. Various amino acids react differently to DHA producing different tones of coloration from yellow to
brown. The resulting pigments are called melanoidins. These are similar in coloration to melanin, the natural substance in the deeper skin layers which brown or "tan" from exposure to UV rays.
Going for the Gold.
For centuries, tanned skin was considered unattractive, especially among women. A tan was not golden or glowing, but brown and weathered was proof that someone labored outdoors. Well-bred
ladies protected themselves with hats, parasols and long sleeves.
Coco Chanel is widely credited, or blamed, with changing all that. In 1923, the story goes that
Chanel, the French fashion designer accidentally got a lot of sun while sailing aboard a yacht to
Cannes. When she returned from the Riviera all golden brown a fad was born, before long so was an
industry.
Movie stars, politicians, models, teenagers, housewives, everyone wanted to be bronzed. The rich
and famous traveled to sunny places in winter or used a sunlamp. Ordinary people “worked” on their tans, lying in the sun for hours and sunburn was common.
As the century wore on dermatologists and oncologists in Western nations were alarmed by a surge in
skin cancers. They warned that damage to the skin builds up over time leading to wrinkles and dry
skin as well as cancer. By the 1970s suntan lotions were giving way to sunscreen concoctions
boasting varying degrees of protection. Tanning beds and booths began catering to those who
wanted a tan but worried about the sun.
It wasn' t long however before doctors began to warn that the ultraviolet tanning lamps used in beds
and booths were as bad as if not worse than the sun. The U.S Food and Drug Administration says that tanning lamps may be more dangerous than the natural sun because people can use them at the same
intensity year round and can expose their whole bodies at once.
In a reverse of Chanel’s trendsetting tan, some of todays celebrities, such as the porcelain skinned
Nicole Kidman, speak out against tanning.
Those who still desire a tan are beginning to turn to “sunless” tanning. Increasingly the preferred
option is spray tanning. In fact news reports in September 2009 quoted a leading financial analyst as
saying that spray tanning is the one area of growth in an otherwise declining tanning industry. Spray
tanning which brought in about 11 percent of the industry s revenue last year is expected to grow to
17 percent by the end of the year according to George Van Horn, the analyst.
Getting the best from your tanShould I exfoliate before I get my tan?People get a little carried away with exfoliation and they scrub their body till it is red. There really is no need for this to happen. A shower with a face cloth over the bodythe day before your tan is the best outcome.
Should I shave before I come?It is advised to shave or wax the day before you come so your pores have time toclose over properly again.
What about lotions, perfumes and under arm deodorants?Dont wear any of these before your tan as it will hinder the solution browning the skin.
TAN KILLERSLong hot showers or bathsUsing any product with AHA in itBaby oil High UV sunscreens (but remember you are not protected from the suns harmful rays)
Dove body wash has been know to take tan off as it had AHA exfoliant in itSwimming in chlorinated poolsLying around in the sand and swimming all day (but hey thats why you got the tan right)?
MAKING YOUR TAN LAST AS LONG AS POSSIBLESome people can only get 3-4 days out of there tan, now there are many reasons for this someAre as above but their are other factors as well including any medication you may be takingThe time of the month (menstrual cycle) lotions you have applied and even alcohol.Making your tan last we recommend using moisturiser every day over your tan to help keep theskin nice and plump and keep your tan looking and lasting as long as possible.
REMOVING YOUR TANPeople have claimed that lemon juice, nappy san (not advised), toothpaste, baby oil and even sugar toremove their tans. If you have had a particularly bad tan we recommend a hot shower for 5 minutes
and then use a tan remover mitt or just a flannel is good enough. If you are a regular tanner and find
you get a little build up each week we do recommend the TANGO mitt or something similar for removing those caught areas, really bad patches can bleach the tan by rubbing a wedge of lemon ontothe skin and leaving for 15 to 20 mins before rinsing.
WHEN TANS GO WRONGhave you had a bad tan? Here are some reasons your tan may be bad.
The tan was blotchy:
Could be something you have eaten or some pharmaceutical product, either over thecounter product or prescription. If it is blotchy or spotty like a leopard it is more than likely something
you have eaten that has caused the tan to go funny not the tanning solution. Most often it will be from
either sweating, sitting too long, dancing all night and even sleeping in one position can cause your tan to be imperfect, these cases are not common so you really dont need to worry, talk with your BAY
technician they are trained to advise you how to care for your tan.
Hands and feet: On some people the tan absorbs more but we have less melanin down there hence why we dont get brown soles. Have you seen an African mans feet? They are pink not brown. To much solution onthe feet can make them look a little like you have been in the mud so best to lightly mist the foot area, but your experienced tanner should know this. Some salons use fancy creams for your feet elbows
and knees, this isn' t really necessary but if it feels good and you like it then no harm really is caused.
Tips on how to get a good spray tanTips for the spray tan technician
Solution:Now it doesn' t really matter what solution you use though some are better than others but you should
be able to get a good tan out of most products on the market today. A great tan is 50/50 meaning that 50% is the person applying it and the other 50% is the product. When looking for a solution it is best to
ask what' is in it and what the DHA content is, usually 8-10% is best for tanning. Brownallyear has
organic dha meaning it is derived from a plant and the other stuff in it is all safe too.
2 HOUR tanning can be achieved by applying a heap of tan then washing it off after 2 hours but there
are many other 2 hour tanning products that have chemicals in it that do make you darker quicker.
Make sure you do your research before getting one of these. BAY has a two hours tanner which is
natural but not organic, please ask your BAY technician about it
The TanApplying the tan is of great importance not only getting it even but making sure you dont put too
much on or not enough for each skin type, this usually takes practice and it is always safe with a new
client to put less on and tell them to come back if they want more. Very pale skin people can never be
black, even though they want to be this is not a reality. Someone with more melanin in their skin will go darker than the friend who doesn' t. Often you might get two girls turn up that are both white but one will turn out darker than the other because we all have different skin types. Usually after applying
the product you should be able to see what it looks like on the skin therefore can establish if they can
have more or not.
BronzerIMO (in my opinion) having a tan with a bronzer in it helps with even coverage, as it lets you see where
you have been and when to add more, also the client gets to leave looking brown while the great stuff
underneath gets to work making your client brown. However with a bronzer tell your client that as the
tan develops underneath they will look browner after a few hours and not to panic as when they wash
the bronzer will wash away leaving a perfect tan.
Shading the bodyThis part is really important for a great tan and no one ever tells you this, but if you shade the body in
certain parts when applying the tan it looks super natural like you have been at the beach. Try to
imagine your at the beach all day and you come home a little sunburnt, where is that sunburn? Usually
on the arms, shoulders and legs. So when applying the tan finish with another light dusting on the
shoulders and arms and top of the back and your client will look super natural. Shading is very
important to a great tan.
RememberSpray tanning can be fun and easy but you do need to put a little bit of love into it. There are a lot of people who purchase a machine and start up and really have no idea and this causes some bad tans. Have pride in your work , practice on family and friends and try different techniques, we all have a style
but you can achieve a great tan if you spend a little time researching different solutions and
applications.
The Machine and GunDont worry about your machine worry about your gun, needle size, weight, velocity and spray pattern
are important factors when tanning. Each person has a certain way that they tan and you will need to
find firstly how you like to hold the gun which direction you like to swing (pardon the pun) and the
distance from the body, once we know these things we then set up the correct amount of tan to be
fired out onto the body. A body SHOULD not be wet at all. If your client looks a little wet your either too close or you have too much coming out of the gun. Remember we want to mist the body not douse
the body.
Streaky TansStreaky tans are caused by application and the client. Good lighting on the body is essential and being
able to see where the product has gone is always great so you dont miss any spots. Some clients like
to go out a couple of hours after being tanned this is not great news because if they spill drink, sweat or wear very tight clothing that can affect the outcome of the tan. I had one lady who went out a couple
of hours after her tan in a lace dress and while sitting at dinner that night the tan got scratched off
from the lace on the backs of her legs but she couldn' t see it till the morning after the tan had already
set in. If your client comes back with lighter bits on their body then that is usually the technicians fault for not putting an even coverage over the body. ALWAYS check the client front and back when
finished to make sure you have them covered. Get them to move their arms up and down and
customize the tan as you see fit. Another tip when tanning is have your client put their clothes on a
table or somewhere they dont have to bend down immediately after tanning. The reason is when the
client bends straight after a tan the tan gets forced into the skin and make a brown v shape at the back
of the legs, this can also happen on the arms if they bend them in too much. Have you every had your client with brown arm pits? That is due to them putting their arm down straight after you have sprayed
on the arms. Try blending and misting onto the pits because they dont really get sunburnt in the sun
anyway so brown armpits are not natural. The opposite to this, the white arm pits is from sweating so
again just blend to the pit area not directly onto the pit itself.
The client All clients are not created equal. Every client has a different skin type and every client wants
something different from their tan. There are a few questions technicians should ask to establish
this. Firstly has the client ever had a spray tan before? This will tell the technician to make sure they make you very natural first time round. Next questions
you should be asked is If you have had a spray tan before and if so how did you like it and do you like to
be natural or as dark as possible without being unnatural.
These questions tell your technician a lot about what you like and therefore they can customize the tan
to suit you. If you say natural your technician should not put too much on but if you say "oh I love it really dark, yes I' ve had tans before I have two coats" then we technicians can be safe this client doesn' t care what colour they are as long as its not white. If a client says they would like to be as brown as
possible without being fake looking then thats the medium tan. So below is a list of how I would spray
those 3 types of people.
More Mature PeopleRemember to be mindful of older clients especially areas, such as elbows, knees and hands. Have the
client bend the elbows and knees while applying the spray tan. When spraying hands, ask the clients
to spread their fingers in a claw like fashion. This prevents crease marks. A lot of more mature skin
has mature melanin and what we mean by that is that there skin knows what to do when activated so
always less is best in this situation we dont want to see the below outcome on our favorite clients.
NATURALThe natural client would have a light dusting over their body, gun turned down to a fine mist and
approx. 30-60 cms away from the body spraying.
MEDIUMThe medium client who likes to be as brown as possible is as above but shading the body making the
shoulders arms and tummy a little darker than the rest. Shading is important here.
DARKDoesn' t really matter with this client, two coats on, they will love it, they wont be white thats all that matters.
Myths Busted
Q: Whats all this talk about green and blue based tans, what does this mean?A: This is a myth going around tanning folk and is very strange. DHA or dihydroxyacetone the tanning
agent in all spray tans is colorless. The only colorants in spray tanning are the one that are put in to
produce the topical colour, the colour that you see immediately when you have been tanned. This
however washes off after your shower and your tan has developed and this is when you might see base
colours. Brownallyear uses an array of colours blue, red, yellow (which makes brown) and caramel.
These special colours do help to make your tan a bit more chocolatey as they stain the skin a little bit therefore reducing any unnatural tones caused by too much tan.
Q: Does 2 hour rapid tan contain chemicals that may be harmful?A: There has been talk and confusion on 2 hour tanning. DHA takes anywhere from 4-10 hours
(approximately) to develop your melanin to a brown colour. Some 2 hour tans use a fruit extract that enhances the production of melanin and is safe and non-irritating to the skin, but you should exercise
caution as some 2 hour tans do contain ingredients that cause the tan to be rapidly absorbed deep into
the skin (and possibly the bloodstream). The FDA of America strongly cautions against this. So
tanners must do their research to ensure they are well informed of what they are putting on their bodies. BAY2 two hour tan contains a higher percentage of DHA with a chemical penetrator which can
be found in a lot of moisturisers on the market today, though they are safe they are not organic and
we urge clients to do their own research to determine if this is what they would like.
Q: Whats the difference between a Natural ORGANIC tan and ones that aren' t?A: Organic means ‘derived from the earth.' DHA a sugar derivative is described as organic, but to get a
nice brown colour other ‘stuff’ needs to be added. Most spray tanning solutions use preservatives and
add alcohol agents, alcohol is not ‘organic’ therefore it must be replaced with something that is and
when these things are replaced with natural ‘organic’ substitutes it the becomes ‘organic.' Some of the
other ingredients in non-organic solutions can irritate the skin. DHA has been safely used for over 50
years with no contra indications. If your concerned always do your research.
Our motto....
LOOK GREAT , FEEL GREAT you will BE GREAT!Secrets of Success1. PASSION, we have passion, we are excited about spray tanning, we have a vision beyond just being
great and our vision is going to turn into reality.
2. POSITIVE PERSPECTIVE, If circumstances are not exactly as you had hoped, tap back into your passion to turn it around. Although sometimes external factors are not ideal having a positive
perspective and making good of the bad is the only way forward.
3. PERSISTENCE BEATS RESISTANCE, No short cuts here, it wont happen overnight. All businesses
experience a setback somewhere in the journey, dont let this ruin your passion or positive
perspective, take another look at it and DO NOT give up. Where there is a will there is a way.
4. PHILANTHROPY, successful people know that you help yourself when you invest in others. There
is nothing more emotionally satisfying that when you give much and expect little in return. Having
the willingness to support others and to help them along their journey is reflected in the attitudes
and actions of most successful people. A successful person practices and teaches understanding, tolerance and service to others.
Brownallyear believe in these secrets to success.
