Introduction

Origin and Introduction of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug:• Native to China and Japan • These little bugs were first sited in Allentown, PA in 1998 but are believed to have arrived in 1996 in Allentown from a shipment that arrived from China, they have been spreading ever since.

•Basically introduced to the United states from shipments of materials from china

Characteristics -Size -adults are 17 mm long ( a little over 1 inch) -Color- they are several shades of brown, with coppery or bluish round depression on there heads-Body Shape: shield shaped body -How to distinguish them from native species: “There is lighter bands of color on the BMSB’s antennae, along with darker bands of color on the membranous , overlapping the rear part of the of the front pair of wings.”(PSU)Why are they called Stink Bugs? Reason is they have sent glands on there abdomen that let on a nasty smell.

Life Cycle -Female lays about 20-30 eggs under a plant leaf anywhere's between May to October it depends on the conditions how much food is available and how warm it is. • eggs are light yellow to yellow read in color • Once eggs hatch they go though “five nymphal instars ( Immature Stages)” • Usually only one generation hatches per year but good conditions allow 2 to 3 generations

Why are Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs a Problem?

1.) They have no natural predator in the United States, unlike China where a parasitic wasp keeps them under control therefore they can just keep multiplying.

2.) They are becoming one of the worst agricultural pest in PA,MD,NJ,WV, VA and across the United States.

3.) BMSB’s are also home/building invaders during the winter months which is also causing problems.

4.) They are also spreading fairly fast across the United States because products from China are shipped all over the world.

Location Of Sightings

Currently in 37 Counties but most likely all are infected

Agricultural Pest

Why? Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs have been causing devastating crop lost and damage for farmers. -Fruits, Vegetables, Corn, Soybeans etc.- Some Farmers Reported 100% loss of corn crops others reported 40-50% loss of there tree-fruits were loss in 2010 alone

Building Structure Damage Once BMSBs enter your home they are hard to get rid of. They can get into dry goods, smell, and they live in in all the cracks and openings in your house so there’re hard to get rid of.

Best thing to do is keep them from getting in, seal up spaces around windows, door jams, fix screens with holes etc.

How Do We Control Them?

Insecticides:• Are effective to an extent but they kill all the other bugs also that may not be a threat and its only a short term solution.

Other options:• When you find eggs destroy them • Try to prevent them from getting in building structures because that’s where they winter to stay alive • Find a natural predator for them

•Research is currently being done to try and solve this the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Problem
