At 2:22 pm, November 23, a Todd County Deputy attempted a traffic stop on an individual

(Wade Moenkedick) who was known to not have a valid drivers license. The individual fled

north on Hwy 71, north of Hewitt. Moenkedick stopped a few miles later, but then fled againafter backing into the squad car, causing extensive damage. Moenkedick was located by other

Todd County Deputies and the pursuit continued. During the pursuit two other Todd County

squads and an Eagle Bend squad were run into by the suspect. Moenkedick, of rural Bertha,

was eventually taken into custody on County 23, south of Hwy 210. He is being held in the Todd

County Detention Center waiting formal charges.

The Wadena County Sheriffs Office, Henning Police Department, Eagle Bend Police

Department, MN State Patrol, DNR, and the Bertha Ambulance assisted with the incident.

    To the editor:

On July 13, 2011, at 2 PM, I experienced a farm accident that

occurred while I was spraying thistles along a drainage ditch that

forms the west boundary of our farm. The accident resulted in a bro-

ken collarbone and three broken ribs when I was tipped from my six

wheeler as I descended a short, steep slope. Of course, the accident

was my fault because I failed to consider the unbalancing effect that

300 pounds of herbicide, sprayer, and gear in the cargo box would

have on my Polaris. And a small, unfixed problem with the shifting

linkage caused me to blunder along in high-range rather than the

more appropriate low-range. Worse yet, I didnt have a cell phone (I

do now) to call for rescue, although I had told my wife that Id be

working in that location, which is about 3/4 mile west of our house

and Norris Road. I hope that readers might learn from my mistakes.Although I tried repeatedly to get up from the ground, I just could-

nt get past the pain. The best I could do, for fear of the machine over-

heating and incinerating me, was to painfully reach up and turn of

the ignition. As I lay that in the marsh grass, I realized there would

be no rescue for me until sometime after my wife returned at nine or

ten oclock from her Catholic Youth Group meeting. I was worried

that she might not notice my absence Continued on page 16

    Walter Carlson of Ward

ownship is 90 years old this year.

    fter hearing questions from his

    ieces and nephews about his

World War II experiences, he decid-

d to tell his story to the Blade

    because they wanted to know.

    Walter Carlson was born in

    Ward Township in September 1921

    Adolph and Agnes Carlson.

dolph was the son of Charlie and

melia Carlson, who moved toWard Township from Iowa in 1894

hen Adolph was 4. One reason

    hey chose Ward Township was

    ecause Amelias brother, who

Walter knew as Old Man Grant,

    ved nearby.

    Charlie Carlson was a poor

    rmer, Walt recalled. He was

wkward in everything. He had a

ce full of whiskers, and he liked

smoke a pipe. The young boys

ked to try to set his whiskers on

    re.

Grandpa Charlie had a few cows

nd horses. He had a lot of bad

uck with his cattle and sickness

ith his horses, but he never com-

ained about it in the house, Walt

aid. He kept it outside. But my

    ad, he was continually bellyach-

ng to Ma about something either

    olacks or Bohunks or Republicans

r Democrats or snow or rain. It

as the last thing I heard at night

efore I went to sleep and the first

hing I heard when I woke up. He

had a way hed tell you to do

something, and if you did it right it

was fine, but if not hed chew you

out. But he never explained how

    to do it.

Walt was one of eight children.

His sister Dorothy was the oldest,

    then came Walt, Lester, Ted,

    Adeline, Ervin, Louis, and Lucille.

Five are still alive: Walt, Ted,

    Adeline, Ervin, and Louis.

    After completing 8th grade,

about 1935, Walt worked for hisdad, and worked for the neighbors

for 50 cents a day. In the late sum-

mer a group of men would go down

to Redwood Falls to shock and

    thresh grain. There they were

paid good money, Walt said: 30

    cents an hour. During the

    Depression years that was very

    good pay. After finishing at

    Redwood Falls, the men would

sometimes go out to South Dakota

and work in the wheat fields.

    Back home, things were pretty

    skimpy, Walt remembered. The

family had seven cows and five

horses and 150 chickens, four or

five brood sows. Thats the way I

left it to go to the Army.

Here is where Walts war experi-

ences begin. He was drafted into

the U.S. Army on July 24, 1942, at

the age of 21. He and others were

sworn in at Fort Snelling, and then

headed to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for

    artillery school and basic training.

HAPPENINGSThe Browerville Blade, Page 2 Thursday, December 1, 2011

Oregon and Michigan provide the majority of the nations Christmas trees.

In 1923 President Calvin Coolidge started the annual tradition of the National

Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on the White House Lawn.

Claxton Georgia, claims to be the Fruit Cake Capitol of the World.

Franklin D. Roosevelt once owned a Christmas tree farm.

December 29 is National Whiners Day

Charles Dickens original phrase for Scrooge was Bah, Christmas, not Bah, Humbug.

Worldwide, Christmas has been celebrated on 135 different days of the year.

For it to snow the tops of the clouds must be below 0 degrees Celsius, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Snow kills hundreds of people in the United States each year. The primary snow-related deaths are from

traffic accidents, overexertion, and exposure, but deaths from avalanches have been steadily increasing.

Snow at the North and South Pole reflect heat into space!! That happens because the ice acts like a mirror

with the heat of the sun, and the heat bounces off the ice and into space.

As snow falls snowflakes connect to make bigger snowflakes.

Snow can come from any cloud that is layered.

    Obituary

was coming in the near future.

Walt had his birthday there in

    September. He received a nice

package from home. It was a cake

    with brown frosting and guess

what there was not a crack or

dent in it, just like when Mom

wrapped it up. I said, Boys, get

some ice cream. We are going tocelebrate and we are going to have

    a party!

By November 1, 1944, the unit

was on its way to New York, where

    the men boarded the Queen

    Elizabeth, for transport to Europe.

It was smooth sailing, but we had

English cooks, poor cooks for darn

    sure. We docked in Northern

Scotland, and boarded a train for

    Southampton. There we boarded

    another English ship and anchored

    in the English Channel. We

crossed over to France and ended

up in an apple orchard for the next

    three weeks. We patrolled a

pipeline to keep the French fromstealing gas.

It was very cold. We lost three

men while there, two from pneu-

monia and one that stepped on a

mine. We got our guns and heavy

equipment and 105s before we left

for the battle field. We just missed

the Battle of the Bulge. We crossed

    into Germany through the

    Ardennes forest on December 25,

1944. There we dug in for about

three months, and got used to the

sound of artillery. There was some

    strafing from German airplanes,

and once in a while a bomber would

fly over. Snow came and froze our

pancakes to the mess kit before wecould eat them.

Walt got a new assignment. I

    became the captains driver, and

did telephone line repair. Once I

started on a repair job that began

at 3:00 PM and lasted all night.

The repair job was 26 miles long.

It took 18 hours to finish. After

this, the captain took part of our

outfit up ahead after dark, got

them set up, and we headed back

alone. We drove into a bomb hole. I

put the Jeep in low gear and drove

right out. Later I heard the cap-

tain say, Im sure glad I had that

Carlson for my driver, hes the

coolest man I ever saw. That made

    me feel good!

About April 1 we left the place

    where wed been staying and

moved into a bombed town for a

few days. I got orders to eat early

dinner and take my Jeep to pick up

    an officer someplace. Now all

trucks had to have chains on the

wheels at this time, to be ready for

the spring offensive. I kept somewires on the back end of the Jeep to

tie down broken cross links in the

chains. So I got in the jeep and

moved it about six feet, and then

stopped to see if I had some wires.

I walked around back of the Jeep

and saw that I had some. I heard a

    buzzing noise. I looked through

the windshield and saw a red spot

about a foot across. It was a shell

starting to explode right where I

would have been standing, if I had-

nt gone in back of the Jeep to look

for the wires. The radiator got

punched. I was lucky, never got a

    scratch.

We crossed a river under asmoke screen and next we were the

point in a new country that had

seen no war damage yet. We called

it injun country. Not much war

damage in their towns. The people

    were mostly friendly and coopera-

tive. The last river we crossed put

us in Russian territory so we had to

go back. The war ended for us on

May 8, 1945. I had to drive officers

to different places and the soldiers

on the road tried to crowd me off

the road because I was driving a

    civilian car.

When we left Europe we were

loaded onto the Altoona Victory for

the trip home, the fifth ship I wason. There were American cooks

and the food was very good and

fresh. The trip home took 12 days

and nights. It was rough water, up

and down, had to crouch over to

hold your plate and cups so they

wouldnt end up on the floor.

    I came home to a not-so-good

welcome from my father. He said,

Well, now, youre home and you

better stay around here and get

some work done, in a scolding

voice. He thought that all guys in

the Army were goofs. I met up

with some of my buddies after the

    war, from Dassel, Minneapolis,

    Duluth, and from Winston, North

Dakota, but I never brought them

    to my home.

    Walt met his wife Elfredia

Luedtke after the war. They were

    married in 1950. Elfredia remem-

bered, It was dry that year. It quit

raining in May. We had to buy feed

    the first year.

    Walt continued, Then we

opened up some land on rotationfarming. We planted oats, corn,

alfalfa, hay, straw and we got

good crops after that. We farmed

with horses for the first two or

three years. We took good care of

    the land.

    Eventually, Walt and Elfredia

    bought his grandfathers farm,

    where they live now.

    Walt and Elfredia never had

children, the same as two of his

    other siblings. My brother Lester

was here with us for 12 years, and

then he went to Sauk Centre to be

a carpenter. We hired kids through

stone picking season to help out.

We bought a combine in the early1950s and did custom work. Then

we bought a swather and a blower

and a chopper, and worked for oth-

ers for close to a month each year.

We run that till the 1980s. That

old machine we first bought we had

to overhaul, and then at the end of

the season we traded for a new one

in 1955. That old combine would

    still run.

    Walt and Elfredia milked cows

for many years. They never bought

them at sales. Instead, they raised

    their own replacements. They quit

milking in the early 1980s, but

kept raising young stock and fed

them out and sold them. Although they are older now,

Walt and Elfredia want to stay in

their home as long as they can.

They have sold the place, but kept

a life estate that allows them to live

there as long as they want to. Walt

is proud that he served in World

War II, and can remember the

names of most of his buddies when

he looks at his collection of photos.

Walt, we thank you for your serv-

    ice.

    Friends of ours, Bart and

Kent, have gone home after hav-

ng spent just over a week at our

    lace bow hunting. Before they

    rrived, they both decided they

would take a really big buck or

othing at all. They are the type

f hunters that get into their tree

tand before daylight and do not

et down until long after dark. I

ersonally do not hunt that hard,

ut I have the luxury of beingble to go deer hunting anytime I

    want during three months of

    eer seasons.

    The guys were here during

he peak of the rutting season so

eer were active the whole time

    hey were hunting. Bart started

unting on the south place near

    he border between the pasture

nd the timber. Each morning he

    would run his climbing stand

hirty to thirty-five feet up an

ak tree. That is another differ-

ence between the way they hunt

and the way I do it. There is not

enough money to get me thirty-

five feet up a tree on a climbing

stand even when its light out.

There is no way I would do it in

the dark of night. He hunted

from the same tree for several

days and saw dozens of deer

    including several respectable

bucks, but not the one he want-ed.

    Kent hunted several different

    areas. He saw deer everywhere

he hunted but also did not see

the one he was after. On differ-

ent areas of the farm, he counted

    twenty-two bucks that measured

over 140. That is a good deer in

anyones eyes, but he knew what

    he wanted.

As days passed and I hadnt

    received that expected phone call

from a tree stand, I started to

    become concerned. I knew they

    were hunting hard and was

    afraid they would be getting

frustrated. At different times Iasked both of them if they were

    getting discouraged. They both

answered that if they never got a

shot, up to this point, the hunt

had been one of the best of their

lives. To spend time in the out-

doors, see and be close to large

numbers of deer, and have the

    opportunity to choose if they

take a shot or not is what its

about for them. They felt the

same way I do. Its more about

    the hunt than the harvest.

    Nobodys going to complain if

they get the big one but thats

    not the most important part.

Bart moved his stand just up

from the willows above the pond.

The first morning there, he got

his buck. The phone call came in

about 8:30. I could hear the

excitement in his voice as he told

    me about putting an arrow

through the trophy of a lifetimeand watching it drop. He was

    still shaking from the adrenaline

rush when I got to his position to

    help him load the buck.

    A couple days later, Kent

decided to move his stand to the

    same area, about a hundred

    yards from where Bart had

    taken his deer. The temperature

was cold and the wind was calm

    when he crashed his rattling

antlers together from high up in

    tree. Within minutes, three

bucks appeared and two of them

    were big. They watched each

other while Kent drew on the

biggest of the three and releasedhis arrow. Patience paid off as

Kent also had a trophy buck.

It was a great time to have a

couple guys here that hunt hard

and appreciate the outdoors as I

do. They know hunting is about

    friends, enjoying spending time

    outdoors, and appreciating what

nature has to offer. But it doesnt

hurt when a person is able to

bring home a cooler full of meat

and a trophy to hang on the wall.

    By Walter Scott

    What hunting is about

    Dear friends,

Hard to believe, its the first paper of December already. Thanksgiving

has come and gone, and now Christmas is really just around the corner.

I hope all had a good Thanksgiving. Ours was good, except Jordan did

not make it home. I understand it would have been a fast home and back

trip for her as she had to work, and Fargo is a ways to come for just a cou-ple of hours, but still, it would have been nice to see her.

She sent me a text yesterday, Sunday, and asked what I want for

Christmas: I told her I just want her to come home, that is gift enough.

Back to Thanksgiving: As we actually celebrated Thanksgiving with

family on Saturday, I had Thanksgiving day to do whatever I wanted.

Benjamin, my lab puppy, and I spent a large part of the day hunting

pheasants. We didnt do so good.

However, on Wednesday, Benjamin and I went out

for a short walk on some public land near town and

did manage to get one really nice rooster. Bens first.

I cant tell for sure, but I think I was more excited

    than he was.

Again on Friday we were out hunting with a couple

of friends on his land east of town, and we actually got

up about 20 birds that day, five being roosters. We got

four of them. Its nice to finally see a few birds

around, as most of the summer I have seen none tospeak of.

Thanksgiving on Saturday was held at my mom and dads house. My

brother, Ethan and his wife, Sunny, were there, as well as some friends

from the North Shore area. We had a great day, eating, visiting, eating

some more.... you get the idea.

Next Sunday is the Annual Old Fashioned Christmas celebration in

Browerville. This is a great chance to get together with family and

friends to enjoy a good meal, visit, and let the children visit with Santa.

Speaking of Santa, we will again be sending letters to Santa at the Blade

Office. Please send them to: Letters to Santa, Browerville Blade, PO Box

245, Browerville, MN 56438. We will make sure they are passed along to

    the North Pole.

Well, its Monday and I need to get working on this weeks paper. Have

a good week, and I will write again later.

MPCA enforcement actions total nearly $690,000 in third quarter of 2011The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) concluded 43 enforcement cases totaling

687,751 in penalties during the third quarter of 2011. The cases occurred at facilities in 26 coun-es throughout Minnesota.

The MPCA helps protect the environment by writing and enforcing environmental rules and

egulations that set standards for environmental quality and limits on pollutants that can be dis-

harged from facilities. To help regulated parties stay in compliance with rules and regulations,

he MPCA conducts inspections, provides training, and distributes guidance materials.

In some negotiated enforcement cases called stipulation agreements, part of a monetary penal-

y is paid toward the completion of a supplemental environmental project (SEP). SEPs are intend-

d to provide extra environmental and public health benefits. They are projects which a responsi-

le party agrees to undertake in the settlement of an enforcement action, but which the responsi-

    License stamp

    revenues contribute

    to conservationWhen Minnesotans buy state

    hunting and fishing license stamps

    they are contributing directly to

    work that supports duck, pheasant,

    trout, wild turkey and walleye

    management.

    Next year, when people pur-

chase the 2012 walleye stamp, they

will also be buying a piece of histo-

ry. Thats because the 2012 stamp

was painted by John House, the

Melby artist who now holds the dis-tinction of being the only person to

win all five of Minnesotas wildlife

    art stamp contests.

    Clearly, the 2012 walleye stamp

has special meaning for me, said

    House, a full-time professional

artist for more than 30 years. I am

honored that my work was select-

ed. Its rewarding to know that my

art has been part of Minnesota fish

    and wildlife conservation for more

    than a decade.

    Houses stamp-winning art has

    included paintings of green-winged

teal, brown trout, a strutting tom

turkey, a cagy rooster in stride, and

a walleye slashing at a school ofshiner minnows amidst rock and

    submerged logs.

    Annually, the Minnesota

    Department of Natural Resources

    (DNR) conducts wildlife art con-

tests for the duck, pheasant, trout,

    wild turkey and walleye stamps.

House won the duck stamp contest

in 1999, pheasant in 2004, trout in

2006, turkey in 2008 and walleye in

2011. The contests are judged by an

impartial jury of experts, none of

    whom know whose artwork is

    being evaluated.

    Ed Boggess, DNR Fish and

    Wildlife Division director, said

stamp sales represent an impor-tant part of the DNRs overall fund-

    ing portfolio. These revenues, he

    said, fund habitat improvement

projects related to the species they

    depict. Stamp revenues also fund

    research and population monitor-

ing, and are often used to con-

    tribute to large public-private part-

    nership where their return on

    investment is even greater.

    Sampling of 1,300 deer

shows no sign of CWDNone of the 1,300 deer tested in

    and around the Chronic Wasting

Disease (CWD) management zonein southeastern Minnesota have

shown signs of the disease, accord-

    ing to the Minnesota Department

    of Natural Resources (DNR).

    Hunters have harvested 780

deer so far within the CWD man-

    agement zone, which stretches

    from Wanamingo, Zumbrota and

    Zumbro Falls southward to

    Kasson, Byron and Rochester.

    Negative results have been

    returned for 638 deer.

In the areas adjacent to the

CWD zone, 671 of 1,053 deer har-

    vested during the now-concluded

    first season have tested negative.

Results on the remaining deer inboth areas are pending.

    Collections are going well and

    hunters are very cooperative, said

    Lou Cornicelli, DNR wildlife

    research manager. Well continue

working check stations in the CWD

    zone through Sunday, Nov. 27,

    when the season there ends.

    All hunters who harvest deer

    within the CWD management zone

must register their deer in person

    at check stations located through-

out the area. Registration is neces-

sary so DNR can extract a lymph

node tissue sample for CWD test-

    ing.

    Hunters who harvest deer with-

    in the CWD management zone

    (deer permit area 602) cannot

remove the carcass from the zone

until a CWD-negative test result is

    reported. Testing typically takes

    three business days to complete

and results can be accessed by

    hunters online at mndnr.gov/cwd.

    Other deer permit areas where

    in-person registration is required

for CWD testing, but which do not

    have carcass movement restric-

tions, are areas 341, 342, 343 and344. Although closed to hunting

now, those areas will reopen to

hunting from Saturday, Nov. 19, to

    Sunday, Nov. 27. Check stations

will reopen in those areas with the

    season.

    Electronic registration via tele-

phone or Internet is not available

in these areas. Check stations will

    be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    Additional information is avail-

    able online at mndnr.gov/cwd.

    DNR seeks public input

    on ruffed grouse man-

    agement planCitizens interested in Minnesota

ruffed grouse and the habitat that

    supports them can now provide

    input on the Minnesota Depart-

    ment of Natural Resources' (DNR)

    proposed ruffed grouse long-range

    management plan.

    The public comment period,

    which is available online only,

began Thursday, Nov. 17, and ends

    Monday, Dec. 19.

    With an average annual harvest

rate of 519,000 grouse during the

past 10 years, Minnesota is one of

the nations top three ruffed grouse

    states. The average hunter har-

vests five birds each year inMinnesota. Annual total harvests

have reached 1.2 million birds dur-

    ing peak years.

    Minnesota leads the nation in

    aspen-birch forest type, the pre-

ferred habitat of ruffed grouse, and

offers more than 11 million acres of

federal, state and county land open

to public hunting, much of it locat-

    ed within the primary grouse

    range.

    The draft plans long-range

    vision for ruffed grouse in

    Minnesota includes sufficient

    quantity, quality and distribution

of habitat to support robust grouse

populations throughout the speciesrange in the state. The plan also

    addresses maintaining grouse

    hunter numbers, and provides for

    quality habitat to support healthy

    ruffed grouse populations through-

    out their range.

Our goal is to ensure the viabil-

ity of ruffed grouse and their forest

habitat, manage grouse as an inte-

    gral part of Minnesotas forested

    landscapes, and encourage and

    promote hunting and observation

of ruffed grouse in their natural

    habitat," said Cynthia Osmundson,

    forest wildlife program leader.

    Public input will be reviewed

and considered in January. Thefinal Minnesota ruffed grouse man-

agement plan, to be completed in

    February, will help guide ruffed

    grouse management during the

    next 10 years.
