The practice of adding phytase in to an ima l feed d ie ts i s considered a standard practice fo r i t s w ide l y recogn ized benefits. The key benefit is the replacement of expensive MCP or DCP sources by acting to release valuable phosphorus from raw materials of plant origin which has been bound by phytate.

Unders tand ing the sub t l e differences between the different phytase products is becoming more important in our industry as nutritionists fine-tune the product selection to the feed application o r p r o c e s s i n g u s e d t o m a n u f a c t u r e t h e f e e d . Discussing activity levels and stability requirements becomes common practice.

E-coli or Fungal Phytase? Commerc i a l f unga l - based phytase products have had a great impact in the animal feed industry over the years. Looking fo r fu r ther improvements , u n i v e r s i t i e s , r e s e a r c h o r g a n i z a t i o n s a n d n e w

producers of phytase have focused R&D efforts in the direction of E-coli expressed phytase in more recent years, resulting in E-coli phytase which yields better stability and higher activity levels than traditional fungal phytase sources.

The Nutrilink Phytase products are E-coli based. Improved s tab i l i t y in s tandard feed processing conditions and more importantly, greater activity of the E-coli based phytase in the digestive tract over a wider range of pH levels means improved release of bound and valuable phosphorus.

T h e r m o s t a b i l i t y i s a k e y requirement when phytase is discussed. The Nutr i l ink Phytase l ine can address d i f f e ren t f eed p rocess ing technologies. Starting with the HT (High Technology) product, NutriHT Phytase C5000, the product is coated to provide thermostabililty at recommended rates up to 95ºC. For more standard applications including low temperature feed processing and mash feeds, the NutriPro P h y t a s e G 5 0 0 0 i s t h e recommended, cost effective product.

To cater to high temperature feed conditioning, most feed manufacturers have installed post pellet spray application systems to apply enzymes including Phytase and NSPs. NutriPro Phytase L5000 caters t o t h i s spec i fic cus tomer requirement.

Research has shown that the nutrient matrix values for E-coli phytase are different to fungal phytase sources. To maximize the performance returns and benefits of using Nutrilinkʼs E-coli based Phytase, nutritionists need to update the matrix using the recommended values from Table 1 below.
