Tasks to cover for an event - 1. Collect email addresses, 2. Let Volunteer Coordinator know when events are
scheduled, 3. If there are costs which you’d like reimbursed, submit a
proposed budget ahead of the event for approval, 4. Request donations & volunteers, and,5. Be aware that some non-partisan organizations are
sensitive about partisan events that are overtly political and less community oriented.

• WILL work with local candidate campaigns to provide support, volunteers, share resources
• WILL support Democratic candidates in uncontested races before the primary election

VAN and MiniVAN• VAN (Voter Activation Network) is the database owned
by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and maintained by NGP VAN, Inc, a privately owned contracted organization.
– Can create lists of voters with several variables such as voter registration, voting activity, preferences, interests, positions, contact information
– Prepares canvassing walk lists (also known as cutting “turf”)
– Candidates and campaigns can buy access to data– Data is held closely, shared with selective audiences

VAN and MiniVAN
• MiniVAN is an application used on Smartphones and Tablets by canvassers.
– Provides real time data input and synchronization
– Can be loaded with lists and ‘turf’ for individual canvassers for customized audiences

• Log in with ActionID• Add List # from
Campaign• As you visit each address
and voter, record results based on the script provided by the campaign.
• Addresses are listed in walking order.
• Data is synched in real time and added to VAN.
People 2 People• Way to engage voters when NOT asking for a vote or money• Targeting Democrats and Unaffiliated Voters• Taking place in ALL 3,010 precinct in Colorado• State Party will provide guidance, training, walk lists, and
support• Steps to begin -
– Send Email with “P2P” in subject– Include your address, phone, county, and precinct #– Download MiniVAN app– Will receive a walk list, map, script and data entry forms
within 48 hours– Start walking!

Networking• Your network is your strongest asset• Share your values as you engage within your
community• Where can you expand your network? Church? Work?
Your morning walk? The dog park?• Practice talking to people you know who share your
values and progressive perspective.• As you become comfortable, expand to others safely
and with purpose.• There are resources available, such as “Don’t Think of
An Elephant”, “The Little Blue Book”, progressive websites and publications.

Candidates and Issues• Your strongest talking points are issues and values you
believe in.• Learn about what you are most interested in supporting.• Learn the facts and learn the opposition’s interests.• Which values are you supporting?• Which values are others supporting?• Which candidates are running in your elections?• Which ballots initiatives or issues are being considered?• Don’t bluff, if you don’t know, say so.

• Normally organized by a candidate’s campaign or local party- Campaigns organize phone banks to fundraise and share
information about candidate to encourage support.- Broomfield Dems will organize a phone bank to fundraise,
extend invitations to events, recruit volunteers, or encourage support for endorsed candidates
• Callers can use personal or phones provided by the campaign• Campaign manager will provide script and data entry forms, if
needed• Host may provide refreshments• A phone bank event can help new phone bankers by observing
more experienced callers and demonstrating best practices
