turing machinery; strip brush manufacturingmachinery; mop manufacturing machinery;injection molds; and, specialty machinery forautomation, packaging, etc. of brooms, brush-es and mops. Borghi is known throughout theworld as a leader in staple-set and anchor-setbrush manufacturing machinery, sometimesreferred to in the brush industry as “drillingand filling” machinery. Borgi also has manydecades of experience in producing equipmentfor the production of twisted-in-wire brushes.

Other than machinery for broom and brushmanufacturing, Borghi offers productionsolutions for mop manufacturing and varioustypes of injection molds. Borghi not only pro-vides the mold itself, but also helps with prod-uct design, prototyping and testing the injec-tion molds for plastic parts. Seeing that cus-tomers need a continuous renewal of their lineof products, and that this takes time betweenthe various phases of engineering and devel-opment, Borghi is able to offer a promptresponse to these needs.

Many Borghi employees have decades ofexperience in mold manufacturing and injec-tion molding. This, united with the investmentin state-of-the-art, specialized machinery tobuild and test the molds, gives the customer astrong partner to allow the customer to devel-op new ideas for injection molded products,

in absolute privacy. Borghi goes a step fur-ther, as the customer’s raw materials are usedto thoroughly test the mold and verify thequality not only of the injection molding, butalso on the brush manufacturing machinery.

Borghi not only provides technology forbrooms and brushes, but also for certain kindsof paintbrushes and mops. With Borghi’sengineering capacity and technology manu-facturing strength, requests for automationhave been met with the realization of machin-ery for special types of paintbrushes andmany types of mops.

Borghi’s latest diversification is intomachinery for manufacturing strip brushes. The Company’s strip brush manufacturingmachine, model BS30, produces strip brushesat speeds reaching up to 100 feet per minute.Able to work with a variety of raw materials,Borghi’s strip brush machine gives customersthe versatility to produce many sizes and typesof strip brushes. The key reason Borghi canoffer this type of equipment is due to the com-pany’s design, which makes it easy to run stripbrushes and change-over from one product toanother; and allows even the novice to producetop qulity strip brushes with tight tolerances.

Borghi also goes beyond just providingequipment to produce “the product.” It pro-vides specialty machinery to automate pack-

aging and other requirements that a givenproduct may have before it is completely fin-ished and ready to go into the warehouse orout the door. Borghi’s flexibility in oferingcustom solutions is what keeps its level oftechnology fresh and cutting-edge.

Products: Tufting machines for brooms, household, industrial and per-sonal care, and toothbrushes. Boucherie’s Anchor Free Technology hasnow been re-engineered to allow for the production of household andindustrial brushes without the use of anchors or staples. The filament andblock can be of different materials. With two filling heads running contin-uously at 650 RPM (1,300 tufts per minute), brushes with 138 tufts are pro-duced at the rate of 600 pieces per hour.

The indoor broom that was demonstrated at the last InterBrush show inFreiburg, Germany requires a mere 50 percent of the weight in polypropy-lene of a regular brush block. Additionally, there are savings in filamentwaste since no trimming is needed and, of course, there is no wire. In thisworld of high energy costs and petroleum based materials, such savingscannot be considered trivial. These combined attributes have the potentialto revolutionize the brush manufacturing industry. Boucherie is very proudthat the AFT-HH machine was honored with the Innovation Award at boththe ABMA and FEIBP annual conventions.

The TCU-CNC machines are capable of handling brushes from nail-brushes to 24-inch brooms, at speeds up to 600 RPM or 1,200 tufts perminute. The modular concept, which permits a machine to be reconfiguredfor vastly different brushes, has now been well demonstrated. Moreover, these machines are available from being manually loaded all the way tofully automated production cells, equipped with fully automatic handlefeeders and industrial robots.

The TCU-CNC range of machines has been further extended by theintroduction of the TCU-SL/CNC and the TCU-T/CNC. The TCU-SL/CNC machine, with its unique fiber picking system and 95 mm stroke,is able to run at speeds up to 1,000 tufts per minute, even with filaments aslong as 420 mm (16-inches) unfolded. The TCU-T/CC machine, with longstroke filling tools that are lined with a ceramic material and sturdycarousel with heavy-duty support in the drilling and filling stations, isdesigned for arduous applications with drill sizes to 12 mm, and the use ofheavy vegetable fibers.

With the single-header SCU-CNC, Boucherie enters the market formachinery for industrial brushes. The SCU will handle disk brushes aswell as plate brushes, and can be converted to a household brush machinein a matter of minutes. The SCU-S/CNC is an economically priced, yetextremely sturdy and versatile single header machine for the production ofall kinds of brooms and brushes up to 62 cm (24-inches) long in one oper-ation and 1 meter (39-inches) long in 2 operations.

Toothbrush Production Lines and Work Centers: Boucherie hasdeveloped a variety of toothbrush manufacturing equipment. Productionmachines range from the very affordable TB3-A/CNC, through the TB3-TS and TB3-FS, which are economically priced, full production lines forless demanding applications, to the highly automated and sophisticatedTB3-FM and TB3-FM/L. All of these single header machines now run atcontinuous speeds up to 1,000 tufts per minute. For the highest production,Boucherie offers the double headed TB3-A2/CNC, TB32-FM4/CNC andTB42-FM/CNC numerically controlled machines, which will produce upto 50 finished brushes per minute.

Anchorless Toothbrush Production Lines and Work Centers: In thefield of machinery for the oral care industry, with the introduction of theAFT/CNC machine, Boucherie clearly established a leadership position inanchorless technology.

The AFT/CNC is the first machine for tufting toothbrushes withoutusing anchors. Block tufts, strip tufts and various combinations of tuftsangles widen the range of design options for the toothbrush heads. TheAFT/CNC features automatic handle feeding, Windows-based CNC con-trols, and either pre-endrounding of bristles or automatic transfer ofbrushes into an integrated end-rounding machine. No trimming isrequired. AFT technology may now be used to manufacture toothbrusheswith tapered filaments. Available too is a less automated version of thismachine: the AFT/SD line, in which the handle and bristle infeed areaccomplished manually.

PAGE 22 BROOM, BRUSH & MOP June 2010

The AFT-IMT is the world’s first commer-cially available in-mould technology for theproduction of toothbrushes. Pre-endroundedfilaments are picked and arranged in their finalconfiguration prior to being transferred into amould where the brush head and handle areover-moulded to produce the finished product.

IDM Machine: The IDM is a compactcarousel machine for the high-speed produc-tion of inter-dental and mascara brushes. It isnow possible to produce up to 50 high quali-ty brushes per minute, even while using thesmallest wire sizes, since the brush remainsin the same clamp throughout the whole pro-duction process. The IDM is available in ver-sions with spool feed of the nylon, or withfiber boxes for pre-cut filaments. An integrat-ed vision system for the automatic inspectionof finished brushes is also available.

Injection Molds: Boucherie produces sin-gle component molds, multi-componentmolds with manual or automatic transfer, andmulti-component, high cavitation, valvegated, hot runner stack molds. Boucheriemolds are used to produce a wide range ofconsumer, medical and engineering products.

Packaging Machines: Form, fill and sealblister packaging machines are available inheat seal and high frequency seal versions for

toothbrush and personal care brushes. Theymay be operated as stand-alone machines orintegrated into one or two tufting machines. Forthe packaging of items like interdental brushesand toothbrushes in double-sided blister packs, the BM-A/DS was recently introduced.

Brief History: Boucherie USA Inc., hasbeen selling Boucherie brush machines, sophisticated multi-component injection moldsand packaging equipment in North, Centraland South America for more than 30 years. 10

Handles coming loose from the tool towhich they are affixed have been a long timeindustry problem. Patented CamLock™Threaded Tips actually make it more difficultto unscrew a handle than to screw it on initial-

ly. The CamLock™ Tips can be purchasedalready assembled onto the handle of choice orsold separately. In either case, the “cam lock-ing” mechanism creates a tight union betweenthe handle and brush, broom or other tool thatwill not unscrew during normal use. 06

The cost per ton of this broom corn was $2,731($1.37 per pound). All broom corn imported into the United Statesduring the first three months of 2010 came from Mexico.

Bart Pelton, of PelRay International, LLC, in San Antonio,TX, felt the 90 short ton number for imported Mexican broomcorn during March was accurate. The total value for the month, however, looked low to him.

“You can’t buy broom corn that cheaply (at an average price of$1.32 per pound) from Mexico,” Pelton explained.

He also reported on the aftermath of last April’s hail storm in theTorreon region of Mexico. Pelton estimated that 10 to 20 percentof the first broom corn crop planted in this area was destroyed andthat some replanting has since taken place.

“With the weather (in the Torreon area) being cooler than nor-mal this spring, and with the replanting, it’s been forecasted thatthe bulk of the first harvest from Torreon will be a couple of weekslate,” Pelton said. “For most years, the heaviest part of this harvesttakes place during the first week in July. For this year, however, itmay be mid- to late-July before they really get into the thickestpart of the harvest.”

Questions about thesize of the secondTorreon crop for laterin 2010 have also beenraised due to lastApril’s hail storm.Pelton explained that alarge percentage ofTorreon’s second cropis directly related tothe first crop.

“Farmers basicallycut many of the plantsdown and water andfertilize them again. The same plant comesback and regeneratesmore fiber,” he said.

“Being later in the year, there is now a question of whether or notthis will cause problems with the size of the second crop.

“At the moment, it’s too early to tell. The good news isprocessed broom corn remains readily available in Mexico. Iexpect (Mexican broom corn) prices to be stable, or come downsome, between now and when the new crop arrives (fromTorreon).”

When interviewed on May 17, Pelton added that Mexicanbroom corn pricing had been fluctuating quite a bit in relation tothe Mexican peso, which was also quite active.

“With most demand for broom corn coming from the Mexicanmarket, this (fluctuation) impacts U.S. (broom corn) prices. Infact, if the Mexican peso had not been as strong as of late, I wouldhave expected prices to be down by now,” he said.

When discussing yucca fiber, Pelton reported demand to beslow but steady. He added that the fiber remains “a bargain.”

“Yucca fiber remains relatively available and not much haschanged with prices,” he said. “Capacity is declining. Some of the(processors) have cut back production or have closed. The remain-ing factories, however, still seem to be able to keep up withdemand.”

Pelton reported that overall business activity and sales at hiscompany have been picking up compared to levels experiencedone to two months ago.

“It’s quite an improvement from last year. The real question, however, is how much of this is just a seasonal pick up and howmuch is true business recovery? I think it’s some of both,” Peltonsaid.

Concerning the overall state of security in northern Mexico, headded that broom corn processors have told him that the situationis becoming better in Cadereyta.

“Basically, the military has taken over for the police and the(outbreak of violence) has calmed down quite a bit inCadereyta,” Pelton said. “However, there are still problems inMonterrey, and when most people visit Cadereyta they usuallystay in Monterrey.

“There are (security) problems in Torreon as well. I don’t thinkit’s quite as bad there as last year, but people are still limitingtheir travel in this area. It seems like the ‘hot’ spots movearound. At this point, the worst areas (for safety and security) arealong the Mexican-U.S. border. This causes us (at PelRayInternational) a problem as we frequently like to drive intoMexico rather than fly because it’s more economical. There is areal concern right now, however, about driving through theseborder areas.”

Richard Caddy, of R.E. Caddy & Co., Inc., in Greensboro,NC, said March’s broom corn import figure of 90 short tons looksto be accurate, although it’s possible that some of this import mayactually have been overflow from late February.

He agreed, however, that the total value of March’s importedbroom corn was too low.

“When I look at the cost per pound ($1.32) for March, I don’tknow what kind of a realistic mix of broom corn (the import)could have been since this is such a low figure,” Caddy said.“When (the U.S. government) calls something broom corn itwould be interesting to find out exactly what kind of fiber it is ver-sus broom straw.”

When interviewed on May 18, Caddy added that he has notnoticed any direct repercussions as of yet pertaining to April’s haildamage in the Torreon region.

“There are a few pricing issues, but the (Mexican) processorstell me this is more due to the current exchange rate between theMexican peso and U.S. dollar. I haven’t noticed any lack of(broom corn) availability,” he said. “(Mexican broom corn)processors are asking for more money, around 7 to 8 percent, which is a fairly substantial jump. However, there is also some

flexibility. “The short term trend regarding broom corn prices has been up

over the past month, but I don’t know if this will continue.” Slightly higher prices for yucca fiber was also reported by

Caddy, who added that current quality is good and availabilitydoesn’t seem to be an issue.

He added that overall business for his company as of late can bedescribed as “busy,” although not at the same level as a couple ofyears ago.

“Business does look to be trending in the right direction. It’sslowly getting better,” Caddy said.

Tim Monahan, of The Thomas Monahan Co., in Arcola, IL,also felt 90 imported short tons of broom corn for March was anaccurate reading, while the reported value was too low.

Concerning last April’s hail damage in Torreon, Monahansaid it didn’t appear Mexican broom corn prices had increased,as of mid-May, as a result of the storm. The bulk of this sum-mer’s first Torreon harvest, however, will probably be pushedback some.

“They usually start harvesting in June, so there was plenty oftime to replant any damaged broom corn,” Monahan. “This couldnow push back some of the harvest until August, and that’s a pret-ty tight squeeze to get a second crop planted (for a second harvestthis fall). We will just have to see how it all plays out. There maybe farmers not wanting to plant a second crop anyway if they feelprices are too low.”

There was no major news to report regarding yucca fiber, according to Monahan, as demand remains weak and processorscut production. He added a lot of yucca fiber being processedthese days will remain in Mexico for Mexican broom production.

Monahan agreed with Pelton and Caddy that overall business isimproving, but at a slow pace.

“It’s a little tenuous, but getting better. Something could happentomorrow to knock it back down, but right now there are morepositives than negatives,” Monahan said.
