A small town known as the ‘Village of Spires’ noting its towering churches was found in the late 1830’s by
German Settlers.
OLDENBURG
This small German Catholic town, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, has an abundant architectural history. Grab a self-guided tour brochure titled “A Walk through Historic Oldenburg” to learn more about history and the first settlers while marveling at the architectural influences. Want to learn more; Grab the brochure “Vatican Ride” and take a bike ride or leisure drive to venture out throughout the county to view 9 unique Catholic churches.
FEATURED IN:National Geographic 2015 Abroad at Home: the 600 Best International Travel Experiences in North America. The German- American Hall of Fame Ranked Oldenburg #9 in 2014 for celebrating and making German contributions in America.
Most sign throughout Oldenburg will be in German but do not worry; look closer they also have English.
In July, do not miss one of the largest festivals in Franklin County “Freudenfest” which means Festival of Fun. It is a 2 day celebration throughout the streets. Music and German beer are always available along with Dress for the Fest, Dachshund Races, and games, contests that are always entertaining. You will never go wrong with the great food served at the locally owned and operated restaurants in this quaint little town. And after a great meal, stroll through the shops and art shops that line the street.
The painted hydrants started in 1976 during the Bicentennial. They started out painted as historic
founders such as George Washington and Ben Franklin. Over time fading has taken place and
are now being repainted to reflect important Oldenburg figures such as Father Franz Joseph Rudolf and Tinsmith Caspar Gaupel. But look
close; I am sure there may be a few you might recognize.
